Richard Widmark reportedly used his clout to amp up this revisionist western, but the result seems forced at best, and hampered by Universal’s TV-grade production values. The sober screenplay brings in good ideas but the execution can’t quite hold its own with the more progressive westerns of the genre-changing years 1968-’69. A cast of familiar faces makes much of it look fresh: Carroll O’Connor’s venal saloon keeper steals the show, while interesting casting gives us Lena Horne as Widmark’s romantic partner.

“Let go. Be afraid. You all taste so much better when you’re afraid.” – It.
Winter of 1990 and ABC showed a miniseries that scared the living daylights out of viewers with it images of clowns and balloons. These were the days of Vcr’s and cassette tapes, when DVR’s and Blu-ray weren’t even thought of yet.
The miniseries It was true water-cooler banter for the next morning. Starring Richard Thomas, Tim Reid, Annette O’Toole, Richard Masur, Dennis Christopher, Harry Anderson and Tim Curry, it was based on the novel by Stephen King.

Smack dab in the middle of his fourth decade as a filmmaker, auteur John Frankenheimer would release what would stand as one of his last notable titles with 52 Pick-Up in 1986. The 80s were not really kind to the veteran director, having knocked out one of his silliest titles in 1979 with the environmental horror film Prophecy prior to helming some other oddities, like the Scott Glenn/Toshiro Mifune film The Challenge (1982), the Michael Caine thriller The Holcraft Experiment (1985) and then Dead Bang (1989) with Don Johnson. But it would be his adaptation of this Elmore Leonard novel, a black mail neo noir that really stands out amongst his later works.

Leonard Nimoy will be remembered for many things. Foremost is creating an iconic character known the world over, but his contributions to the world of entertainment go far beyond what he achieved in front of the camera. He was also a writer, an artist and a director. As a filmmaker, he actually helmed two of the biggest hits of the 1980s, "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" and "Three Men and a Baby." If moviegoers should have any regrets for Nimoy it's that he only made a few more films after those blockbusters. But his legacy lives on in many ways. It certainly lives on with me. When you talk to most "Star Trek" fans, they are either of the age where they became fans of the franchise during its initial 60s run, when it was syndicated in the 70s or when it returned to television with "Star Trek: The Next Generation.
