Pakistan’s Central Board of Film Censors (Cbfc) has banned Pakistani-American filmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal’s “I’ll Meet You There” a week ahead of its theatrical release in the country.
The Cbfc found the film unsuitable for public exhibition on the grounds that it “does not reflect true Pakistani culture, portrays a negative image of Muslims, wrong/dubious interpretation of Islamic teachings and our society which is against the norms of Islamic, social and cultural values of Pakistan.” The Cbfc has refused to grant a censorship certificate on these grounds.
The film was selected for SXSW’s narrative feature competition in 2020 before the spread of the coronavirus pandemic forced the festival’s cancelation. Mini-studio Level Forward acquired North American virtual theatrical rights and impact distribution privileges for the film and rolled it out in 2021.

"This is her home, these are her people." Freestyle Digital Media has revealed the first official trailer for an indie drama titled I'll Meet You There, which was originally supposed to premiere during last year's SXSW Film Festival before it was cancelled. A Muslim cop goes undercover at his estranged father's mosque while his daughter hides her passion for a forbidden dance, then uncovering a shocking family secret. From SXSW: "I'll Meet You There defies storytelling conventions and stereotypes in favor of multi-dimensional characters who display their humanity at every turn. Filmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal's thoughtful writing and directing have yielded enlightening performances in a story of family and betrayal that is both unique and universal." The film's big cast includes Faran Tahir, Nikita Tewani, Muhammad Qavi Khan, Sheetal Sheth, Shawn Parsons, Andrea Cirie, Nitin Madan, Michael Pemberton, Samrat Chakrabarti, and Rachit Trehan. I screened this last year and it's a mess,...

Mini-studio, Level Forward has acquired North American virtual theatrical rights and impact distribution privileges for “I’ll Meet You There,” a portrait of three generations of a Muslim-American family. The company will roll out the film from Feb. 3, 2021.
The film was one of ten chosen from 1,305 submissions for SXSW’s narrative feature competition earlier this year before the spread of the coronavirus pandemic forced the festival’s cancelation.
It was directed by Pakistani-American filmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal, who made her feature debut with the acclaimed “Josh” that played the international festival circuit in 2013.
“I’ll Meet You There” follows Majeed, a Chicago policeman, and his teenage daughter Dua, a gifted ballerina, who are unexpectedly visited by Baba, Majeed’s long-estranged father from Pakistan. Majeed is given a career-making opportunity that he can’t turn down, but it requires him to use his father’s help to gain access to the local mosque,...

In the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, Amy Hill packed her bags in Hollywood and returned home to her family in Hawaii, thinking she would quarantine there. But the actor-comedian’s short-lived break from production came to an end with a surprise Zoom call in April.
Hill, 67, stars in director Quentin Lee’s sci-fi feature “Comisery” as a Japanese American psychiatrist based in, ironically, Hawaii. Having previously collaborated with Lee in the webseries “Comedy InvAsian,” she didn’t hesitate to sign on to be the lead in an experimental project filmed entirely over Zoom.
“I’ve played a psychiatrist, therapist before, so the challenge, for me, was figuring out how this is a different character than the ones I’ve played before,” the veteran actor tells Variety. “Now that I’m getting older, my time is more valuable, because I have fewer moments left in life. This year I finally went to the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (Iffla). It took me 11 years of urging by my friend and former employee Carla Sanders, a festival guru, who works there and whose festival career began with "the two Garys" the founders of Filmex which was Los Angeles' first film festival in the 70s and 80s and one of the greatest shows on earth. In its second year The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie closed Filmex '72, and Luis Buñuel attended his first-ever public screening of one of his films. I won't go into this piece of history except to say it spawned the American Cinemateque and AFI Fest. The two Garys (Gary Essert and Gary Abraham) passed on, both victims of the first wave of the AIDS epidemic that hit the artistic community very hard, wiping out a generation of innovative filmmakers and film curator/ historians in Los Angeles.
The opening night of Iffla reminded me somewhat of Filmex with the glory of the filmmakers on the red carpet, beautiful young stars in glitzy clothes and skyscraper tall high heels, being stopped for interviews, flashbulbs going off and a general yet genteel excitement in the air. Even those interviewing were worth watching. It was different because all the stars were Indian which made this affair rather exotic at the same time.
The opening film, Gangs of Wasseypur, which had shown last year in the Cannes Film Festival, was truly extraordinary and the director Anurag Kashyap spent at least an hour talking to the audience about this film which is reminiscent of The Godfather and Gangs of New York though not at all derivative. Its second part showed the following evening and was equally outrageously original. Again the director spent an hour in the Q&A. He spoke to his move to Bombay as a filmmaker and the return to his own roots in telling the story of Wasseypur where he in fact grew up. The film actually is an analysis of the place's history and evolution as a burning inferno as the fight for the coal industry fuels the feud. From digging coal to killing someone in an innocuous brawl, the tale of vengeance runs parallel to the tale of India itself.
The 5 hours and 20 minutes were riveting. The music and dancing was also outrageous. Our friend Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter called it, "A dizzying explosion of an Indian gangster film, whose epic structure and colorful, immoral killers capture the imagination for over five hours."
David Chute, quoted in Thompson on Hollywood, says "Gangs is headlong, hand-held, violent entertainment. It manages to keep a dozen major characters and their agendas clear while rarely pausing to take a breath. It is also one of those rare movies that acknowledge the influence of movies and other forms of pop culture in shaping the values and motivations of its characters.
The story was actually based upon fact, a story of revenge over three generations of two families in a small city of India. My surprise and reaction to it reminded me of how I felt when I saw John Woo's The Killers in Toronto in 1989 which opened the door to John Woo in the U.S. (Coincidently it was the same David Chute who brought John Woo to the U.S. as I recall). The international sales agent, Elle Driver, has not made a sale in the U.S. Which surprises me.
Iffla concluded on Sunday evening (April 14) with a red carpet and gala fete that included the Los Angeles premiere of Deepa Mehta’s Midnight's Children, and the presentation of the festival's Grand Jury and Audience Choice Awards, followed by an after party.
This year the festival showcased more than 35 film features, documentaries, and short films at ArcLight Hollywood, home of Iffla since its inception. “The awards are always bittersweet for all of us in the programming team as we truly believe in the exceptional talent and relevance of each film which has been so carefully chosen,” said Lead Programmer Terrie Samundra. “That being said, we wholeheartedly share the enthusiasm of the audience and our prestigious jury. A huge congratulations to the winners!”
Ashim Ahluwalia’s Miss Lovely took home the Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature, with an honorable mention for Ship of Theseus directed by Anand Gandhi. The Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary went to Sushrut Jain for Beyond All Boundaries, and for Best Short to Unravel directed by Meghna Gupta, with an honorable mention for Tatpaschat directed by Vasudev Keluskar.

Good afternoon and happy April! Where does the time go?
Happy birthday to Trish Bendix’s dream girl Rachel Maddow, Bijou Phillips, Susan Boyle, Debbie Reynolds, Jane Adams and my perfect doggie Taffy Davenport McManus-Kregloe!
Trish posing with Rachel Maddow (before security pried her away.)
Like many young people growing up in the 1980s, I was obsessed with Princess Diana. Now I find out that in the late '80s Queen’s Freddie Mercury “disguised Princess Diana as a man and took her to notorious gay bar Royal Vauxhall Tavern. They were sure they were going to be discovered, but Mercury proved a major distraction, and Diana reportedly loved it.” After knowing this I can now die happy.
Evan Rachel Wood is so in demand as an actress that she’s starring in movies she even she doesn’t know about.

Good morning!
Chicago-based boxer Grace Penney talked about being out in the ring with DNAinfo.com.
Yes, Virginia, Arrested Development is still going to be made into a movie — most likely.
Rachel Maddow spoke at SXSW Interactive this weekend, and although video does not seem to exist, many photos do. Just imagine her saying smart things.
How adorable are Jenna Lyons and Gf Courtney Crangi in the Vanity Fair Oscars photobooth?
Garrison Starr is going on a spring tour. Check out the video and see if she's coming for you.
What are the gayest buildings in America? California Home Design has found them for you.
A new TV network called Esquire will air all episodes of the Jane Lynch series Party Down. I'm ashamed to say I have never watched the show, so I will definitely be tuning in.

Good afternoon my lovelies!
Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is Interview magazine’s March covergirl.
Rumor has it Mila Kunis might star in the film adaption of 50 Shades of Grey. Um, yes please.
Music mogul Clive Davis has come out as bisexual. In Davis’s memoir The Sound Track of My Life he reveals that he had two serious relationships with men, although no names were mentioned. While promoting his memoir Davis sat down with ABC News and declared that bisexuality does exist. (You’re preaching to the choir, Clive.)
It is estimated that Lady Gaga’s canceled tour is costing $25 million in refunded tickets. Ouch! On a side note, Gaga showed off her latest accessory on Twitter; her wheelchair named Emma.

If there’s a theme to 2011’s crop of films featuring lesbian/bi women, it’s that this was a very good year for emerging voices. First time and younger filmmakers made a mark in huge ways this year, providing everything from spellbinding documentaries (No Look Pass), heart-wrenching drama (Pariah, Break My Fall, Circumstance), and fresh comedy (Jamie and Jessie are Not Together, Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same). Pair that with the quality coming from established filmmakers like Celine Sciamma (Tomboy), and you have a year marked by the presence of strong, unique voices.
Hard Hitters
Nowhere is that strength of vision more prominent than in the year’s dramas. Well-meaning (but tired) melodramas were drowned out by clear-eyed, nuanced filmmaking, most evident in Pariah, the story of a young African-American woman struggling with her identity, and Circumstance, which features the romance between two teenaged girls in Iran.

Title: Stalemate Writer-director: Lovinder Gill Starring: Sheetal Sheth, Josh Randall, Burgess Jenkins, P.J. Maske An in-competition west coast premiere at the ongoing 14th annual Dances With Films festival, writer-director Lovinder Gill’s ‘Stalemate’ is an unsophisticatedly sweet love triangle that unfolds in inoffensive fashion, but ultimately just doesn’t have much of interest to say about women, men or any of the mysterious and necessary distance between them. At the beginning of a particularly important and busy work week, advertising rep Kayleigh (Sheetal Sheth) tells long-time boyfriend Rich (Burgess Jenkins) that she wants a bit of a break, and doesn’t want to see him again until Friday, which is her birthday. Three Veils offers a poignant, dramatic tale of three young Middle-Eastern American women and their colliding lives. Occasionally, the film paints its settings and characters with a rather broad brush, and the script contains uneven moments, but it’s an earnest, entertaining and heartfelt production.
Leila (Mercedes Masöhn) is the pretty, stable “girl next door.” We begin with her staring into a mirror, her voiceover explaining that she’s just gotten engaged (by way of arranged marriage) and all she can think about is her wedding night – specifically her first time with husband-to-be Ali. We watch her prepare for the wedding, host a swinging engagement party and begin to go on awkward dates with Ali, the most aggressively awful kisser of all time.
She relates her adventures in make out purgatory to Nikki (Sheetal Sheth), her free-spirited best friend (and the second of our leading ladies). Slinky, sexy, and perpetually guzzling booze,...

As the writer and director of Three Veils, a few common questions I get about the film are “Is this movie based on a true story?” or “How was it working with the lovely and (insert your favorite saucy term) Sheetal Sheth?” However, the first question I inevitably get is “Excuse me, are you crazy?”
I suppose one must be crazy to attempt to make a film in this day and age about young Arab women — who are Muslim — who go through controversial subject matters such as arranged marriage, forbidden love. And for creating one of the first narrative films to ever feature the struggles of an Arab, Muslim Lesbian.
When I first started writing the script, I admit I was anxious. I didn’t want to offend any particular group, or make unwelcome enemies, especially of the threatening kind. Of course, that goal proved to be mostly hopeless as...

Actress Sheetal Sheth is no stranger to controversy. She made her debut in the film Abcd , playing a promiscuous young woman struggling with the ties of family and tradition. It garnered a lot of attention from press and audiences , both positive and negative. The Indian American beauty held her own against Albert Brooks in Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World, she fell in love with actress Lisa Ray in Shamim Sarif's beloved films The World Unseen and I Can't Think Straight. She also bested me during a pillow fight on my Logo show Brunch with Bridget. (I totally let her win!)
Sheth is dealing with controversy once again with her latest film, Three Veils. The films follows three Middle Eastern women and who deal with abuse, rape and struggles with their sexuality. The script was originally boycotted but was saved thanks to the efforts of the film's director and producer.

Why Am I Doing This? is a comedy about a struggling actor and comedian trying to make it in Hollywood. It stars Anthony Montgomery (I'm Through With Girls), Lynn Chen (Saving Face) and Tom Huang who wrote and directed it. It's the type of quirky multicultural story that independent cinema needs. I'm hoping that Huang forms a Judd Apatow-like band of actors and crafts more starring roles for Montgomery and Chen (plus Sheetal Sheth, James Kyson Lee and Fernanda Andrade).
You can catch Why Am I Doing This? on the big screen for a limited engagement at the Laemmle Music Hall theater in Los Angeles until May 20th.

Equal rights activist Celina Jaitley opened the first Glbt Kashish Festival in Mumbai on Thursday. “I want to say this that these films are also about human emotions,” she says, “You will get to see films not only from India but from abroad. I want to invite all of you to witness what human emotions and these movies are all about.”
Amongst the movies on show at the Festival is the wonderful Nina’s Heavenly Delights with Shelley Conn and Laura Fraser about a young woman who runs away to London to avoid an arranged marriage and when she returns three years later finds her father’s Indian restaurant is on the verge of collapse. Can she save it by entering a curry competition - and will she ever find true love? Also on display is the magnificent I Can’t Think Straight with Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth with its superb ending.

In our first annual Top 50 Lesbian and Bi Characters poll, we asked you to vote for your favorite characters from film, television, and internet shows.
You cast your votes, and now we have the results. Before we reveal the winners, let's take a look at some of the trends that emerged.
Almost all of the characters were from films and television shows that made their debut after the year 2000. A few of the exceptions include Kerry Weaver from ER, and the ass-kicking ladies from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
While most of the characters were from Us productions, a fair amount came from international shows, including our top two characters (from the UK show Skins).
Also notable was the fact that some of your favorite characters, the leads from Xena: Warrior Princess (which ran from 1995-2001) and Idgie Threadgood from the film Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), were never officially presented as lesbian or bisexual.

Clapham Junction by Adrian Shergold (top); Lisa Ray, Sheetal Sheth in I Can’t Think Straight (middle); Patrik Age. 1.5 by Ella Lemhagen (bottom) Canada an egalitarian gay haven? Think again. Marcus McCann reports in Xtra.com that Canada Border Services Agency customs officers have seized three gay-themed films en route to Ottawa’s three-day Inside Out gay film festival, which ends tomorrow, Nov. 22. No explanation was given for the seizure — which, of course, is exactly what you’d expect to happen in a true democracy. The films are supposed to remain in custody until they’re watched in full by some border censor or other. (Curiously, the Inside Out website makes no mention of the border incident.) The three films in question are Adrian [...]...

Sheetal Sheth was first seen in the extremely award winning film Abcd - which also aided the Indian-American genre of films. After creating mass frenzy amongst the gay and lesbian community all over the world, the film is finally coming to India. Thanks to Ajay Devgan, one of our most talented cinematographers, Aseem Bajaj, was in England this June to shoot an independent British film. "It's a British production called The Dreaming Spires directed by Shamim Sarif. It's about the first American boy Joseph Connors who came to Oxford University to serve as a reader to a blind British female professor," says Aseem who has served as Dop to Bollywood films as varied as Chameli and Golmaal. And to think the Dreaming Spires might have never happened for Aseem! He explains, "After U Me Aur Hum, I was supposed to shoot Ajay Devgan's next directorial project. But now he's busy with Rohit Shetty's and Milan Luthria's films. He's also doing Priyadarshan's next. So that left the rest of the year free for me." Question: I loved But I'm a Cheerleader, and I have watched Itty Bitty Titty Committee ten times now. Enough already! When is Jamie Babbit's next movie coming out?
― Tina, Columbia, MD
Jamie Babbit
Answer: Did you check out Babbit's 2005 feature, The Quiet, starring Elisha Cuthbert, Camilla Belle and Edie Falco? If not, the cast alone should be enough to send you to the video store.
I passed your question along to Babbitt, who told me:
I'm currently casting for my new film called Breaking The Girl. It's tonally in the vein of Body Heat, with lots of bi beauties and femme fatales.
