A science-fiction pitch from a writer with the name .Cameron. could have CBS Films dreaming dreams of Avatar-level box office receipts. Upon exploring, the man finds and befriends .a god-like artificial intelligence agent desperate to escape earth.. Omega already has some support. There are football towns and then there's Massillon, Ohio, the gridiron-gaga home of the Tigers, the state's winningest high school team.
Their pivotal 106th season inspires the color commentary for "Go Tigers!" -- a lively, deftly assembled documentary by Massillon native son Ken Carlson that achieves a neatly balanced tone right smack dab in between reverence and ridicule.
Receiving its initial kickoff at this year's Sundance and with its release ideally timed to coincide with the start of you-know-what, the IFC film could see a little action on a relatively sparse field.
Welcome to Massillon, the pigskin-proud Rust Belt town where maternity ward visits are traditionally made to newborn baby boys who are presented with little footballs, and where parents are often encouraged to hold their sons back a couple of semesters so they'll grow into bigger, stronger players by the time they hit their senior year.
But it's not quite business as usual at the start of this particular season. Not only are the Tigers determined to make Massillon forget all about the previous year's disastrous 4-6 season, but a crucial levy is currently before voters. Unless it's approved, the cash-strapped county schools will have to start cutting jobs, so the team's coaches need more than ever to prove their worth.
Director Carlson, a reality TV vet with more than 175 segments of "America's Most Wanted" to his credit, lines up the usual suspects, including the pep rallies and parades (complete with live baby tiger mascot), a handful of key players and their families, pregame locker room prayer circles and halftime tirades, but he weaves all the more than slightly familiar elements together for maximum dramatic effect.
Meanwhile, cinematographer Curt Apduhan, who also lensed the decidedly more artistic "Amargosa", captures the requisite game-playing with high-definition clarity.
