Back in January, we brought you a little tease from Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck) on her role and romance in Stuart Beattie’s I, Frankenstein. This modernization of Mary Shelley’s tale of Frankenstein and his monster from Lakeshore Entertainment/ Hopscotch Features/ Lionsgate is adapted from Underworld creator Kevin Grevioux’s graphic novel.
Filming has already begun in Australia since the beginning of the year but we finally get our first look at star Aaron Eckhart as Adam, Frankenstein’s monster. Check it out below. Adam still looks like a scary son-of-a-b but doesn’t he have great hair? Adam has a bit of hobo-bad boy appeal, doesn’t he?

When someone mentions Kenneth Branagh, quick, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? If you said Shakespeare, welcome to the club. If you said Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, shame on you. I think a few people, myself included, snickered when they heard that Kenneth was going to direct Thor. How can a guy known for bringing the works of Shakespeare to the big screen direct a big popcorn movie like Thor? The boy did well for himself and now Paramount is giving him the directors chair for the next Jack Ryan movie.

Cinema Retro is always on the lookout for classic and cult movies being screened in unique ways by film clubs and societies. We seem to have found one that could really top them all- literally at a dead end!
I learned about The Flicker Club via the B-Movie Podcast (www.bmoviecast.com) recently and I was intrigued. This February they ran a short season of Hammer Films. Nothing exceptional about that, you may say, bar the fact that they have screened rarities such as The Reptile, The Witches and the obscure The Lost Continent. If that wasn’t enough, in conjunction with Hammer, they screened the newly restored Dracula from 1958 with found footage that was missing for decades.. However- wonderful though this is - it is the location and the way in which the Flicker Club screened these gems that elevates them beyond the norm.

Frank Henenlotter’s comic take on Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein has finally been released on Blu-ray thanks to Synapse Films.
When Jeffrey Franken (James Lorinz) loses his fiancé Elizabeth Shelly (Patty Mullen) to a horrible mulching accident at a family birthday party he becomes obsessed with bringing her back. An amateur bioelectric technician with dreams of grandeur, Jeffrey gathers the pieces of Patty’s mutilated body and sets his twisted plan into motion.
Jeffrey needs some fresh parts to add to the pieces of Elizabeth, so armed with a “special” drug Jeffrey makes his way over the bridge and into Manhattan where he lines up a party of hookers. All he has to do is pick the best parts of each girl. No problem, right? The party swings into high gear but Jeffrey begins to have doubts about what he’s doing. Last November,we brought you up to speed on several exciting casting announcements for Stuart Beattie’s I, Frankenstein, including Bill Nighy, Miranda Otto, and Chuck star Yvonne Strahovski to star opposite Aaron Eckhart in the big screen adaptation of Kevin Grevioux’s graphic novel.
Following up on our coverage, actress Yvonne Strahovski recently talked with MovieWeb about preparing for her role as the love interest of Eckhart’s character Adam, Frankenstein’s monster:
“I’m flying in a couple of weeks to Australia to shoot another movie with Aaron Eckhart, which I’m really excited about called I, Frankenstein. It’s going to be sort of an action-drama-romance type movie. I play a scientist, and I think I’m changing up my accent. I’m going to be British in this one, which is nice for a change. For the last few adventures, the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann), has been paired up with Gothic horror writer, Mary Shelly (Julia Cox). They first dealt with a strange automaton in Vienna, then moved on to an apparent witch. Now they’re dealing with an army of undead. I begin to sense a theme.
Our story begins with Mary and the Doctor arriving on Draxine, a human colony world. There they learn that the city state of Garrak was recently destroyed in a massive explosion, apparently triggered by the city’s president who was part of a death cult. As a result, the other major city state, Stronghaven, has decided that the population of Garrak-born people inside its borders cannot be trusted.
Meantime, a small group of soldiers is attacked by what appear to be walking skeletons. They try to stop them, but to no real avail,...

In keeping with Big Finish’s addition of Mary Shelly (Julie Cox) to the 8th Doctor’s (Paul McGann) Tardis, we have something of a horror story, involving witches, religious zealotry and murder. So, basically a Tuesday for the Tardis crew.
Our story begins with Mary saving the lives of two teenage twins from a strange, monstrous creature living inside a recently unsealed well. The twins, Finicia (Alix Wilton Regan) and Lucien (Kevin Trainor) wind up inside the Tardis, and then the Tardis winds up in 17th century England. They’re still all in the same village, but a different time, and yet a place where the twins are recognized.
It turns out they’ve arrived during a witch scare, and a local woman, Agnes (Serena Evans), is about to be burned for witchcraft. She’s surprisingly sanguine about her upcoming fate, but before the Doctor...

Back in 2005, the new series of Doctor Who, aired a fairly good, notable episode called “Dalek”. It focused on a single dalek, retrieved by an egotistical man who wants to use it to his own ends, who is isolated from the rest of his “species”, believes himself to be the only survivor of his race, and is pitied by the Doctor’s fairly new, female companion.
“The Silver Turk,” one of the most recent audios by Big Finish, is a fairly good episode. So, yeah. It’s got that vibe going on.

Welcome to the first of my reviews of Big Finish’s audio plays! For those of you who don’t know, these are (usually), full cast audio adventures based on various properties. They have ones for Dark Shadows, Highlander, Stargate, Sherlock Holmes, and, relevant to this review, Doctor Who.
Their Doctor Who line features past Doctors and their companions. So far we’ve had the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Doctors and beginning next year, we get adventures with the 4th Doctor, along with, at various points, Leela, Romana and K-9. Fun times!
This particular story is a lead-in to several current and upcoming Big Finish audios featuring the 8th Doctor (Paul McGann), and his new companion, a young woman by the name of Mary Shelly (Julie Cox).

The plot of I, Frankenstein gets more and more interesting with each casting announcement. Last week, we told you that Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck) had been cast as star Aaron Eckhart’s love interest and prior to that, character actor Bill Nighy (Total Recall) landed the role of the villainous demon prince.
Now, THR reports that Miranda Otto (Locke & Key, Lord of the Rings) has joined this talented lot and things get that much more interesting. Otto has been cast as the royal leader of gargoyles in the Stuart Beattie directed film.
In this interpretation of the Frankenstein’s monster tale, Adam, played by Eckhart, struggles with his humanity and the monster that he is. All the while, rival supernatural sides want the key to his reanimation. Strahovski’s scientist character is reportedly “tricked into working for demons (cue Nighy) seeking to create an army of the undead” and Otto’s queen strives to help Adam.

Over nearly two years, Lakeshore Entertainment has been trying to get a jump on the impending Frankenstein adaptation race by making a movie [1] based on Keven Grevioux's graphic novel I, Frankenstein. The Underworld-like story, a "contemporary fantasy thriller in which the original monster of Victor Frankenstein stands between the human race and an uprising of supernatural creatures determined to overthrow the world," was originally going to be directed by Underworld: Rise of the Lycans director Patrick Tatopoulos. But Stuart Beattie stepped in to write and direct [2] in March of this year, and last month Aaron Eckhart was signed [3] to play the heroic monster Adam Frankenstein. Now Bill Nighy is in talks to keep the Underworld comparisons going by playing the villain of the film. Variety [4] says Nighy would be "a demon prince," who leads the forces hunting Adam Frankenstein, "demons that want to learn the secret of his creation in...

Last month, we gave you some insights into how Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight, Battle Los Angeles) scored the headline role of Frankenstein’s creature in the Lakeshore/Hopscotch/Lionsgate feature, titled I, Frankenstein. Eckhart also talked about where he would take the role in this adaptation of the Kevin Grevioux graphic novel, but where is the director taking this take on the Frankenstein story?

Aaron Eckhart is going to become a monster once again in Stuart Beattie's "I, Frankenstein." He will be playing Frankenstein's creature, Adam, in the adaptation of Kevin Grevioux's graphic novel.
"I, Frankenstein" has been described as a modern take on Mary Shelly's classic tale. The story follows Adam after he has survived to the present day, and he finds himself caught in a centuries old war between two immortal clans.
When Grevioux was previously talking about the actor he wanted to play Adam, he retrospectively described Eckhart to the letter.
"I will say I want a bigger guy, anywhere from 6'2" to 6'6", a tad bit intimidating, someone who could act obviously, has a witty banter about him, but this is not going to be a comedy, this is a straight-forward action film that's really going to raise eyebrows," says Grevioux. In this case the property is I, Frankenstein, based on the graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux. The story is a contemporary fantasy/thriller based on Mary Shelly's original gothic tale. It follows the monster, Adam Frankenstein, who has survived to the modern era and finds himself (itself?) caught up in a war between immortals. No shit. Lionsgate will distribute I, Frankenstein, and the studio announced today that Aaron Eckhart will play Adam Frankenstein. If the whole 'monster plus immortals' setup sounds familiar, it might be in part because Grevioux is one of the creators of the Underworld series. He seemingly didn't stray far from that path when writing I, Frankenstein. The film will be directed [3] by Stuart Beattie (Tomorrow, When the War Began) and has a release date of February 22, 2013. Like Tomorrow,...

Sneak Peek concept artwork for the upcoming Lakeshore Entertainment, Hopscotch Features, Lionsgate motion picture production, "I, Frankenstein", starring actor Aaron Eckhart as 'Adam Frankenstein'.
Eckhart previously played the scarred villain 'Two-Face' in "The Dark Knight".
Filming starts in Australia January 2012, from a script by Stuart Beattie who will also direct, based on the "I, Frankenstein" graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, co-creator of the "Underworld" movie franchise :
"...in 'I, Frankenstein', Frankenstein's creature 'Adam', has survived to present day due to a genetic quirk in his creation.
"Making his way to a dark, gothic metropolis, he finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans..."
"Mary Shelly's story is about the creation of the first human being, said Beattie. "This is the story about that being, becoming human."

He’s played at least a half of a freak as Two-Face in The Dark Knight, but Aaron Eckhart is set do that all the way in an adaptation of I, Frankenstein for Lionsgate. The actor has just completed shooting the lead role as an ex-cia agent in The Expatriate and will star alongside Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in The Rum Diary. After first hearing about I, Frankenstein several months ago, a press release from Lionsgate now informs us that the project is moving forward with Aaron Eckhart in the lead. Based on the graphic novel by Underworld‘s Kevin Grevioux, it follows Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, Adam, who has survived to the modern day because of “a genetic quirk in his creation.” Ending up in a “dark, gothic metropolis, he finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.” As writer and director Stuart Beattie summed it up, “Mary Shelly’s story is about the creation of the first human being. This is the story about that being becoming human.”
I’m looking forward to how Eckhart will pull off a character like Frankenstein — and, similarly, how they’ll portray him onscreen. The lumbering beast of James Whale‘s 1931 film deviates from Shelley‘s original novel; Frankenstein...

Director Shawn Levy is currently in the process of developing a new big screen adaptation of Frankenstein for Fox. This is just one of several Frankenstein projects in development right now. We don't really know much about the project, but it was previously described as “a sci-fi take on the traditional Mary Shelley story, focusing on themes of friendship and redemption.” Which I find funny because isn't Mary Shelly's Frankenstein already a sci-fi story?

He reveals that the movie will be period piece told from the perspective of the character Igor, and all the interesting misconceptions surrounding the mythology of this story and character. It looks like Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) is going to leave the James Cameron produced film Fantastic Voyage, because according to Deadline the director is looking to take on another film project at Fox... Frankenstein.
Fox wants to move on the new Frankenstein project fast, and since nothing is really moving forward with Fantastic Voyage the studio wants to but him on this film, which is based on the classic Mary Shelly character, from a script written by Max Landis. They want to get their Frankenstein film in production before the seven other Frankenstein film projects do.
I'm not the biggest fan of Levy or his directing style. However, I am looking forward to his Reel Steal film. I don't think he has the right eye or imagination for something like Frankenstein though, unless he plans on giving it a cartoonish type feel, because those are the kinds of films he makes.

Variety is reporting that ABC is currenlty developing The Lincoln Lawyer into a TV series. The trade site reports that the network has commisioned a script from Lionsgate that would turn the feature film into a drama series. The film starred Matthew McConaughey as “a criminal defense attorney who does business from the back of a chauffeured Town Car.” The film was better than I expected and it did decent at the box office, with a $58 million domestic take and an additional $17 million overseas.
The project is being co-produced by Lionsgate and Lakeshore Entertainment, who were behind the feature film. The pilot episode is being penned by screenwriter John Romano and the books’ author Michael Connelly, and will serve as executive producers along with Joel Gotler and Lakeshore’s Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg.

NBC is going to develop a new TV series based on the legend of Frankenstein, only it will be a modern day take on the Mary Shelly novel. Frankenstein is bigger than he's ever been, there are currently several movie in the works and now this. I've said it time and time again that the only Frankenstein project I'm interested in seeing get made is Guillermo del Toro's vision. Everything else just seems like it will be there to pass the time.
The script for the new series comes from Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner who are the executive producers on the series House, which is in it's eighth and most likely final season. The series is being set up and Universal Media Studio, which is where the intellectual property to Frankenstein reside.

Already boasting a stable of artists that makes other studios green with envy, Gang of Seven Animation (aka G-7 Animation for those of you in the know) will now have a serious pile of scratch to go along with their impressive roster, thanks to a partnership with the Chinese government.
Tom Tataranowicz, a veteran of the animation industry and the big cheese at G-7, dropped the information yesterday, as well as what some of the plans were to do with this funding. Aside from a film reboot of the 90's television series "Biker Mice From Mars," Gang of Seven Animation is also currently working on CGI animated versions of Frankenstein and the graphic novel Freak Show. Legendary illustrator Bernie Wrightson is currently tagged as production designer on the latter project.
It certainly looks like some serious entertainment will be rolling out from G7 Animation in the near future. Stay tuned!

Two small breaking stories, one which will be expanded on when we have a full breakdown of the panel. Oh, good. So this week, Frankenstein films are the new Snow White/Wizard of Oz/etc. We've got news on two Frankenstein-related projects that have both moved forward today. Matt Reeves moved from director of interest thanks to Cloverfield to something approaching A-list status with Let Me In. He's certainly lining up a few high-profile genre projects, and the latest is This Dark Endeavor, an adaptation of the Kenneth Oppel 'young Frankenstein' novel that Summit optioned [1] not too long ago. The other is The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein, which Sam Raimi's Ghost House pictures is producing. That one just hired playwright David Auburn to script. More detail on both, as well as vague updates on several other Frankenstein projects, after the break. The bigger news here is that Matt Reeves is now signed to direct This Dark Endeavor, which Jacob Aaron Estes (Mean Creek) has written for Summit.

Michael Sarrazin, a handsome, sensitive-looking leading man who was a staple in movies throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, died of cancer on Sunday, April 17. He was 70 years old.
Disc Dish’s favorite film starring Mr. Sarrazin was 1975’s The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, a creepy horror mystery about a college professor who begins to experience eerie flashbacks from what he believes a previous life incarnation.
