The 34-year-old British actor Nicholas Hoult kicked off production last week on Warner Bros. Discovery’s next big bet: “Superman” with director James Gunn and actors David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. The star of “About a Boy,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and Hulu series “The Great” recently went on Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast and talked a bit about preparing for the role of the evil mastermind Lex Luthor.
First, he complimented his new boss Gunn for making the audition process fun. He said he enjoyed the “Guardians of the Galaxy” auteur’s method of “try[ing] things in the moment, just shouting out from the monitors, ‘Say this line. Do this! Do that!’”
Then he added that even though Luthor is better known for his brains rather than his brawn, Hoult has been hitting the weights. “There’s that bit in ‘All-Star Superman’ [the Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely...

Nicholas Hoult is our newest Lex Luthor!
The 34-year-old Renfield star will play the supervillain in Superman: Legacy, director James Gunn confirmed on Monday (December 11).
“Yes, finally I can answer, @nicholashoult is Lex Luthor in #SupermanLegacy and I couldn’t be happier,” he said.
“We went out to dinner last night to celebrate and discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget. ‘But, James, we heard this weeks ago, why didn’t you tell us it was true?’ Because, although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain. Anyway, here’s to Lex (and Nicholas!), one of my very favorite characters in the Dcu.”

James Gunn has already revealed who his favorite Lex Luthor is, telling Michael Rosenbaum on his own podcast that his portrayal of the supervillain on Smallville was the best he has seen. As for a name near the bottom of the list? Look no further than one of the greatest actors ever.
On the podcast, Rosenbaum asked James Gunn to promise him that if Lex Luthor is in the next Superman movie “he’ll have gravitas or…he’ll be Lex Luthor. He won’t be playing Lex Luthor but he’s more acting like this character…or goofy or crazy! He’s gonna be something that’s grounded and real.” Gunn gave hope, saying, “Everything’s grounded and real, yeah…everything’s grounded and real.” To which Rosenbaum defended his statement with, “I’m not saying anybody’s done that…” Gunn’s coy response: “Maybe somebody’s done that.

Streaming has contributed a great deal to the prevailing theory that everything you could possibly want is just a few clicks away. Think of a movie, and you can load it up on Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, or any other streaming service to watch it. And if it isn't in any of those places, you could always go to Apple or Amazon to rent it. Unfortunately, this could not be further from the truth. The amount of films completely unavailable on a digital platform is incalculable. You would assume that the movies you can't see would most likely be small, independent films that never got proper distribution, but there are a ton of critically acclaimed, and even Oscar-nominated pictures with major movie stars that were distributed by Hollywood studios that you simply cannot find.

On June 12, 1981, “Raiders of the Lost Ark” immersed viewers in the intrepid undertakings of Indiana Jones — a lionhearted archaeologist who set out to find the mystifying Ark of the Covenant.
Harrison Ford portrayed the titular adventurer, while Karen Allen played the high-spirited and resilient Marion Ravenwood. Before being cast in Steven Spielberg’s film, Allen had appeared in 1978’s “National Lampoon’s Animal House” as Katy and 1980’s “A Small Circle of Friends.” Although Allen did not return for the next two “Indiana Jones” sequels (Kate Capshaw and Alison Doody filled the roles as Indy’s love interests), she returned for “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” in 2009.
Variety spoke with Allen about Marion’s “inner strength,” some of the other actors that auditioned for the role of Indiana Jones, the budding romance between him and a teenage Marion and repeatedly having a bin full of snakes poured on her.

Look out Supergirl — Lex Luthor is finally on his way to National City. Supergirl producers confirmed Thursday that the iconic villain will make his first appearance on The CW series in its fourth season, which got underway last weekend as the show moved to its new Sunday night 8/7pm time slot.
“We’re beyond excited to introduce iconic villain, Lex Luthor, to Supergirl and to weave him into our story this season,” executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller said in a joint statement.
Who will portray the evil genius who has more on-screen history than any other DC Comics villain? Time will tell. Casting will “begin shortly,” according to The CW and Warner Bros. TV.
Luthor has been a major presence — in name and through influence — since the Supergirl series first took flight October 2015. The menace from Metropolis casts a long shadow even if he’s yet to meet the local Kryptonian.

DVD Review: "Hitler's S.S.: Portrait Of Evil" (1986) Starring John Shea, Bill Nighy And Tony Randall
By Doug Oswald
“Hitler’s SS: A Portrait of Evil” is a 1986 made-for TV movie telling the fictional story of Helmut (Bill Nighy) and Karl Hoffmann (John Shea), brothers who become a part of Hitler’s rise to power in Germany. The movie opens in 1931 as we meet the brothers, their family, friends and associates. Hoping they can sway and minimalize the radical elements through their intellect and character, Helmut and Karl willingly join the Nazi Party.
The Hoffmann brothers are eager participants in the Nazi party early on as their mother Gerda (Carroll Baker) provides worried commentary. Factory worker Karl joins the Sa while his university student brother Helmut is coaxed into joining the SS by fencing instructor Reinhard Heydrich (David Warner), much to the objection of his mentor and Jewish professor Ludwig Rosenberg (Jose Ferrer). Tony Randall is interesting appearing as a comic performer for the Nazis known as Putzi.

It seems that people love a good spy story but it remains to be seen if viewers will love TNT's new Agent X TV series. Will it run as long as the James Bond movie series or will it last about as long as George Lazenby did as Bond? Will the show be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
On Agent X, newly elected Vice President Natalie Maccabee (Sharon Stone) learns that there is a secret section in the Us Constitution. It gives the Vice President authority over highly-trained and secret operative, -- in this instance, John Case (Jeff Hephner) -- who can handle sensitive cases that the FBI and the CIA can't. We’ve gotten a little taste of how Jesse Eisenberg will portray Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but that stuff barely scratches the surface of who Lex really is in this movie.
Over the years, Lex has been played by actors such as Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, Michael Rosenbaum, Clancy Brown, and John Shea. Each one had their own unique spin on the character, and next year we’ll fully get to see another version of the villainous character from Eisenberg. In a recent interview with The Diane Rehm Show, the actor talked about how he approached the character and how he will make it his own:
“I’ve always noticed the best thing to channel, as an actor, is yourself. To figure out what makes you angry, what makes you feel vengeful or righteous. Those are the feelings that Lex Luthor has. And use that...

DC Comics
Lex Luthor holds a very special place in comic books – he’s the classic arch-enemy of the most famous and popular superhero of all time, Superman.
Having first appeared in 1940’s Action Comics #23, Luthor has been a prominent figure in DC comic books – and indeed a thorn in the Man of Steel’s side – ever since.
With his iconic bald head, the multi-billionaire businessman has used his brain to combat the Kryptonian hero’s brawn, often to devastating effect, utilising genius schemes, powerful technology and the services of other powerful villains in a determined attempt to take him down once and for all.
Such is Luthor’s importance and popularity as a character, he has followed Superman across every form of media – television, movies and video games – and has been portrayed by a number of famous actors, including Gene Hackman, John Shea, Michael Rosenbaum and Kevin Spacey. Jesse Eisenberg...

Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor has been in the headlines recently after it was revealed that Jesse Eisenberg will be playing him in the upcoming Batman vs Superman movie.
The super-villain first appeared in the DC comic books in 1940 and, although the archenemy of Superman, he has also come into conflict with Batman and other superheroes in the DC Universe.
Originally depicted as a mad scientist who used his intelligence to create futuristic weapons, Lex Luthor evolved into a bald businessman and industrialist whose sky-high intelligence compensated for his lack of superpowers.

What clues to the direction of Batman Vs Superman does the casting of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor offer us?
It didn't take long for the jokes to start: so ingrained was Bryan Cranston as the fan's choice choice to play Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder's upcoming Man Of Steel sequel, that the only possible assumption following Friday's announcement was that someone at Warner Bros had misheard Snyder's request to get "that Heisenberg guy" in. That's quite a good gag, in fairness.
That was among the more common reactions – the others being "Huh?", "What?" and "Well, at least this cuts Affleck a break for a bit" – to the news that The Social Network and Adventureland's Jesse Eisenberg, a fresh-faced, mop-haired thirty-year-old, had been cast as one of comicdom's most charismatic and enduring villains.

With Bryan Cranston recently shooting down rampant rumors that he is going to play Lex Luthor in the upcoming sequel to Man of Steel, I decided to morph past actors who have played Superman's arch-nemesis into one.
Inspired by the face morphs of Bruce Wayne and James Bond that we previously featured on the site, I tried to morph All of the actors who have played Lex in live-action television or film. Sadly, I was unable to find high resolution enough photos for Lyle Talbot (Atom Man vs. Superman), or Sherman Howard and Scott Wells from The Adventures of Superboy series. I'm admittedly still a bit of a photoshop novice, so working in their features while maintaining a sense of photorealism proved too difficult.
Below the pic is a breakdown of actors I was able to include and what part of Lex's face they are. When covering up the other parts of the face,...

With all due respect to Gene Hackman, John Shea, Michael Rosenbaum, Kevin Spacey and all those other dudes who bravely put razor to scalp to become Superman's arch-rival Lex Luthor on the big or small screen, the most picaresque fella for the job might just be "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston.
With his show being officially dunzo and a "Batman Vs. Superman" movie on deck to follow up Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," well, the planets seem to have aligned on that note indeed! And Cranston is totally down for the job, too, because obviously.
Per Digital Spy, the 57-year-old Emmy winner responded to rumors of himself potentially being in contention for the leading villain role, saying "Give me a call. I like Lex Luthor. I think he's misunderstood. He's a lovable, sweet man."
In Heisenbergish, that roughly translates to:
Alas, cruel cruel world though it is, Bryan Cranston...

One essential story that should spin out of Man of Steel is the formal introduction of Lex Luthor to this world. Imagine Luthor using Kal-El’s lack of experience against him to show the world that Superman does more harm than good (a classic Luthorism) – especially after the destruction and mayhem Superman “caused” in his battle with General Zod (Michael Shannon). Luthor doesn’t have to be the main villain; he can pull the strings, use technology or simply instigate Superman’s next big conflict in tandem with another villain. In no particular order, here is our list of actors who we think could pull off the Lex Luthor role, along with their pros and cons.
Michael Rosenbaum
Pros: In this case, familiarity breeds comfort instead of contempt since we know his interpretation of Luthor on Smallville well, and he could further develop that on the big screen. He’s...

In an interview with I Am Rogue, "Man of Steel" screenwriter David Goyer kinda-sorta confirmed/didn't really deny Lex Luthor's involvement in the upcoming Superman reboot. Up until now I've operated under the assumption that General Zod (Michael Shannon) will be the only bad guy Superman scraps with in this summer's film. But when asked about the decision to exclude Superman's most iconic villain from the film, Goyer replied:
"I don’t think anyone has ever confirmed that we haven’t included him."
So no, he didn't flat out confirm the character's involvement, but directors rarely do. As a veteran of the comic book film industry (Goyer has both the "Blade" and "Dark Knight" trilogies under his belt), it's entirely likely that the screenwriter knows that a coy remark like that will send shockwaves through the internet. I'll play right into your hands, Mr. Goyer, especially where Lex Luthor is concerned.

The best part of this underwhelming but not totally terrible episode was Andrew Bird. The Chicago-born multi-instrumentalist provided the opening and closing soundtrack for this week with his 2005 song “Fake Palindromes,” which set things up to seem much creepier and more emotionally evocative then they actually turned out to be, but nevertheless, good tune. There were multiple exits on “Invitation to an Inquest,” in roughly chronological order: Good-bye, Justice Ludwick (Rip); good-bye, Jordan (we won’t miss you); good-bye, Maddie (you were almost fun while you lasted); (probably) good-bye, Mr. Agos (good riddance!); and good-bye, Nisa (sorry, girl — you seemed sweet, and heartbreak’s a bitch, but you'll get over it). The case of the week and the return of Cary’s dad (John Shea) were the major plot threads, but let’s note some of the more amusing developments before we get to all that. Robyn is growing on me!
