Filmmaker Clay Tweel has signed on to direct a new documentary based on the life of comedian Andy Kaufman. Produced by Ross Dinerstein’s Campfire Studios, Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions, David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants Incorporated and Fifth Season, the film reps the first doc authorized by the Kaufman estate.
Fifth Season (“Being Mary Tyler Moore”) is fully financing the project, which will be overseen by Mary Lisio, executive vice president of non-scripted and documentary, and produced in partnership with the Andy Kaufman estate.
“I’ve always loved Andy because he was able to elicit such emotional reactions to his performances by using both the poignant and the absurd to keep his audience off balance. I hope we can honor his legacy in that way with our film,” Tweel said.

What’s the deal with this new “Seinfeld” promo? Oh, it’s footage shot by Jerry Seinfeld and Comedy Central to promote the iconic sitcom’s reruns moving exclusively to Comedy Central from their longtime home on TBS this October.
Though it had been known since 2019 that ViacomCBS’ MTV Entertainment had acquired the cable rights to the show beginning this fall in a deal with Sony Pictures Television, Wednesday is when the company announced that Comedy Central is the only one of its platforms that will air “Seinfeld,” thus becoming its exclusive linear home.

ViacomCBS has unveiled its launch plans for the Seinfeld library, which will leave its long-time home on TBS Oct. 1 to move to Comedy Central.
Viacom acquired the exclusive cable syndication rights to Seinfeld in a deal with Sony Pictures Television in Sept. 2019, before the company’s merger with CBS was finalized and the cable group was restructured. At the time, Viacom announced that Seinfeld would air across Viacom’s entertainment brands, including Comedy Central, Paramount Network and TV Land, with an intention to also add Pop to the mix post-merger. Two years later, with a new leadership at the four networks, now part of the MTV Entertainment Group, the plan has changed and Seinfeld will have a singular home on Comedy Central similar to its decades-long association with one Turner network, TBS.
Seinfeld will launch on Comedy Central Oct. 9 with a countdown of the top favorite episodes as voted on by fans.

The summer of George may have passed them by, but at least “Seinfeld” arrives on Netflix well ahead of Festivus, or television fans may have had a lot of grievances to air this year. All 180 episodes of the classic 1990s sitcom are launching Oct. 1 on the streaming giant.
“Larry [David] and I are enormously grateful to Netflix for taking this chance on us. It takes a lot of guts to trust two schmucks who literally had zero experience in television when we made this thing,” said Jerry Seinfeld in a joke statement. “We really got carried away, I guess. I didn’t realize we made so many of them. Hope to recoup god knows how many millions it must have taken to do. But worth all the work if people like it. Crazy project.”

“Seinfeld” will be available to stream again starting in October, Netflix announced on Wednesday.
All 180 episodes of the classic NBC sitcom will be available on the streaming service starting on Oct. 1, making good on a high-profile streaming rights deal announced all the way back in 2019.
When Netflix and Sony Pictures Television struck the deal to make Netflix the streaming home for “Seinfeld,” it was a big win for the streamer at a time when other media companies were shelling out big money to buy valuable library content back from Netflix in anticipation of launching competing services. Two of Netflix’s most popular titles at the time, “Friends” and “The Office,” were yanked off Netflix and have since become cornerstone content for HBO Max and Peacock, respectively.

So Jerry Seinfeld is writing, directing and starring in a movie about Pop-Tarts? What’s the deal with that?
It’s true though, the legendary comedian will turn his attention away from the stage and to “Unfrosted,” a comedy feature film that will tell the story about the invention of the Pop-Tart, two individuals with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
And Seinfeld will make the movie for Netflix, which acquired the rights to the film in an auction and has given the movie a green light with the intention of beginning production next spring.

Exclusive: Jerry Seinfeld has made it clear he would not inject his comic genius into another sitcom, after generating arguably the best one ever. So he is turning to another outlet — the movie screen — and his relationship with Netflix has just won the streamer a plum project for its film slate. It was a rainy night in Hollywood, but no spirits were dampened at the Producers Guild of America’s West Coast Celebration of PGA Award nominated producing teams.
Held at the Hollywood Museum and bathed in the soft glow of Mel’s Diner’s neon lights, hundreds of guests snaked through four full levels of entertainment industry memorabilia – the multiple displays featuring costumes from the Pointer Sisters are not to be missed – while enjoying their choice open bars and wide-variety of hors d’oeuvres.
Deep inside the Max Factor building, even queuing for the elevator was more genial than at typical gatherings, in no small part due to the working bar housed inside – first introduced by Max Factor on the opening night of his Make-Up studio in 1935.
But for as comfortable as it was to lounge amidst Hollywood’s past, the evening was much more concerned about looking ahead towards the industry’s bright future.

The music branch of the Academy often leans into pop stars in this category — perhaps wanting to see them perform the song on the Oscar stage — as well as hit songs from Disney animated musicals. And the shortlist of Best Original Song contenders unveiled today is very much part of that tradition.
Leading the shortlist of 15 songs are these leading contenders, which scored both Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nominations: Elton John’s original song “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Dexter Fletcher’s bio-musical “Rocketman,” Beyoncé’s single “Spirit” from the “live-action” “The Lion King,” and the follow-up to Idina Menzel’s Oscar-winning “Let It Go” juggernaut, her “Frozen 2″ ballad “Into the Unknown,” also written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. That win is in the bag.
Also from the prolific Disney musical stable was Elton John’s “Never Too Late” from “The Lion King,” as well as an original song,...

In 1977 Carl Reiner directed Oh, God!, starring octogenarian George Burns, then the elder statesman of comedy. Today, at 96, it is Reiner who is comedy’s elder statesman—still funny and still sharp, despite the inevitable ailments that come with a long life.
“I’m at the age now where you see doctors every day,” he tells Deadline. “Over the last four or five months I saw my hearing aid doctor, my shin—I hit my shin. I had a physical two days ago. They tell me I’m all right, so that’s why I’m talking to you.”
In the past year, Reiner has shot a movie—Ocean’s Eight (his cameo was dropped from the final cut)—and played a starring role in an HBO documentary, If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast, a film about Reiner and people like him who remain vigorous into their 90s.

At 96 years old, Carl Reiner became the oldest Emmy nominee in history this year for narrating the HBO documentary “If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast,” which he also stars in. It’s not a bad record to break, especially considering, as he reveals, the film “fell into my lap accidentally.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Reiner above.

The idea began with Reiner’s nephew, talent agent and “Seinfeld” producer George Shapiro, who wanted to shine a light on people who have remained active well into their 90s and beyond. “He went around and found marathon runners who were running in their 100s,” Reiner explains. “I had mentioned the fact that I get up in the morning and I read the newspapers, and if I’m not in the obituary, I’ll have breakfast.

At the age of 96, Carl Reiner remains impressively engaged with life.
He tweets daily to his 237K Twitter followers, often in criticism of President Trump. A tweet he posted on Friday garnered 12,000 likes: “I ask: Is there anything more upsetting than having our blow-hard, self serving President meet with foreign leaders and, suppossedly [sic], on our behalf, make deals that make him and his billionaire friends richer?”
And he keeps on top of the news, like the recent controversy over late night TV host Samantha Bee, who earned widespread censure after she called Ivanka Trump the “c” word.
“I know Samantha Bee, and I know she’s not a racist or anything,” Reiner tells Deadline. “She’s a very good soul, and she made a mistake and she apologized profusely, and it’s a little different than what Roseanne did. It’s quite a bit different because Samantha Bee’s heart is in the right place.

Talent manager George Shapiro helped put Jerry Seinfeld and Andy Kaufman on the map. But that’s only a sliver of his showbiz accomplishments, which include packaging such TV fare as “The Steve Allen Show,” “That Girl,” “Gomer Pyle, Usmc” and specials for Carol Channing, Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore. These days, Shapiro, 86, is busier than ever, serving as the producer of the Seinfeld Netflix series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” and serving as manager to his 96-year-old uncle, Carl Reiner; he was also executive producer on last year’s HBO documentary about people over 90, “If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast.” A decade after launching his career as a William Morris Agency mail clerk in New York in 1955, Shapiro received his first mention in Variety on April 22, 1965, an item in Army Archerd’s column, saying “Melody and George Shapiro (Wm. Morrisman) were expecting a baby.

(I interviewed Max Brooks back in 2003 for the first run of The Zombie Survival Guide, which went on to be a huge best-seller that preceded Brooks's zombie epic World War Z. Neither of us knew it at the time, but Brooks was leading the wave of the Zombie Revival Movement that has included hit features like 28 Days Later and "The Walking Dead." There are very few, if any, actual jokes in The Zombie Survival Guide, but it is completely hilarious because for some 200+ pages Brooks never breaks character, playing the book completely straight as an actual practical guide for surviving a zombie attack. And this turns out to be hysterical after about 50 pages or so. You wait for the wink, but it never comes.
Pop cultural zeitgeist-wise, Brooks was pretty damn prescient too. I never would have predicted that what the world really wanted was a lot of zombie movies and shows,...

Oh Rob, it's been 40 years! But a Dick Van Dyke Show reunion special may be coming soon to CBS. No formal deals are in place, but series creator Carl Reiner is penning a script that would catch up with Rob and Laura Petrie in the present day. CBS is eyeing an hourlong special that would open with the scripted half-hour and conclude with a retrospective look at the enduring 1961-66 domestic comedy that starred Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore. Sources say Van Dyke and Moore have expressed interest in revisiting their Petrie personas, as has Larry Mathews, who played the couple's young son, Ritchie. The talk of a Dick Van Dyke reunion comes as Image Entertainment is readying a DVD release of the series. And Van Dyke and Moore will be seen onscreen together later this year in PBS' production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Gin Game. Reiner is repped by CAA and manager George Shapiro of Shapiro/West & Associates.
