This Star Trek: Lower Decks article contains spoilers.
In “The Inner Fight,” the penultimate episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks‘s fourth season, the big bad is revealed to be someone we haven’t seen in a long time. Once a promising Starfleet Cadet and talented pilot, he let his youthful arrogance get the better of him, ending his career in disgrace. Even before Beckett Mariner opened a bunker door and the shadowy figure emerged, we heard the smarmy voice of Robert Duncan McNeill and realized who was back.
No, not Tom Paris. It’s Nick Locarno!
Yes, McNeill did play Lt. Jg./Ensign./Lt. Jg. Tom Paris for seven seasons on Star Trek: Voyager. And yes, he was a gifted pilot whose career ended in disgrace due to his arrogance. And Star Trek producers would have us believe that McNeill never appeared as a member of Starfleet before the Voyager premiere “Caretaker.

Spoilers for "Star Trek: Lower Decks" follow.
The overarching thread of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4 so far has been a mysterious ship attacking a variety of ships throughout the Alpha Quadrant: we've seen it take one Klingon, Romulan, Orion, Ferengi, and Bynar ship each.
The season's penultimate episode, "The Inner Fight," reveals the pilot of this hostile ship, and it's a twist that no one saw coming. The ship doesn't belong to a new alien race, but someone with a more personal connection to Starfleet: Nicholas Locarno (Robert Duncan McNeill), a Starfleet Academy washout turned pilot for hire. The Cerritos crew discovers blueprints for the ship at Locarno's hideout while he abducts Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) to the ship. The episode ends with Mariner and Locarno face to face, and they seem to have a history.
Now, the episode doesn't explain why Locarno built the ship and has been attacking others.

Exclusive: The Natural Resources Defense Council, The Black List, The Redford Center and the CAA Foundation have announced the opening of submissions for the third cycle of their Nrdc Climate Storytelling Fellowship, for the year 2024.
A first-of-its-kind program supporting screenplays or pilots that engage with climate change in a meaningful and unique way, the fellowship has thus far supported half a dozen writers through grant funding and mentorship from creative professionals, as well as script feedback from Nrdc’s team of climate experts. For this cycle, Nrdc will also cover the cost of one month of hosting and one evaluation on the Black List website for all qualified screenplays.
“The fellowship is part of Nrdc’s Rewrite the Future program, which helps Hollywood tell stories about climate change and environmental justice,” said Nrdc director of entertainment partnerships and fellowship founder Katy Jacobs. “We want to support great stories that engage...

For fans of "The Expanse" book series, one of the most surprising things to notice upon starting the show is the different structure. Whereas "Game of Thrones" was fairly straightforward at first, the debut season of "The Expanse" combined a lot of books 1 and 2, while saving parts of book 1 for season 2.
That might sound confusing, but it makes sense. The first book in the series, "Leviathan Wakes," is surprisingly small-scale; it centers around only two major point-of-view characters, an outlier from the rest of the series. The second book is when the number of Pov characters jumps up to four, which is much more representative of the series' general format. The books also have a tendency to drop its non-Holden point-of-view characters after each book, even if they're still alive, another storytelling approach that's a little more awkward in a TV show than it'd be in a book series.

One of the best sci-fi television series recently came to an end, as "The Expanse" aired its sixth and final season starting last year. The series finale, "Babylon's Ashes," was full of the same character-driven stories and realistic space action that made "The Expanse" a hit and ended the series on a high note. Fans were quick to point out that the "Expanse" novels by James S.A. Corey, which form the basis of the series, have three entries that haven't been adapted. This has led to one question: could the series find life elsewhere?

Let me begin this article by saying: there has been no official statement suggesting that a Season 7 of The Expanse will happen. In fact, all official statements have stated that Season 6 will be the last, with no hint of a possible sequel series to finish adapting the book series either. However, this show has pulled off miracles before, and has proven to have a very loyal fanbase. While this situation feels different, given that the cast and crew knew going into Season 6 that it would be their last and set out to complete the story, the series finale—and the final season in general—left the door open narratively for more story to come, should it find funding at some point in the future.

Whether viewers of The Expanse season 6 enjoy Marco Inaros as a villain or not, one thing’s for sure: everyone’s rooting for his downfall. The ironic thing is he could almost defeat himself through sheer pigheadedness if not for the fearless advice of a rising star in the Free Navy, a character by the name of Rosenfeld Guoliang, played by Kathleen Robertson. We asked creators Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham as well as showrunner Naren Shankar about the new dynamic Rosenfeld creates in the show.
Although Rosenfeld is a male character in the James S. A. Corey novels upon which The Expanse is based, both he and the television version act as a voice of reason within Marco’s inner circle. “She’s an established character [from the books], one of the Free Navy,” says Franck. “But more than anything we needed somebody for Marco to have conversations with and to be plotting and strategizing with,...

In the latest episode of The Expanse, Bobbie Draper reminds the Rocinante crew that they’re harboring a convicted felon, Clarissa Mao, and it’s easy for the audience to forget that she was in a maximum security prison on Earth for blowing up a ship full of innocent people in season 3. The forgiveness she earned from Amos in the intervening seasons has now been extended by Holden in this week’s most touching scene, and saving Bobbie’s life was a big part of her redemption arc.
Co-creator of The Expanse Ty Franck enjoys exploring the new dynamics that Clarissa, played wonderfully by Nadine Nicole, brings to the show. “More than anything it’s nice to see Amos have a friend… and Amos really likes [Clarissa]; they’re obviously growing much closer as friends, and that’s all nice,” he says. “But the other...

The compelling series about a solar system under siege concludes after six seasons as war-weary Captain Holden (Steven Strait) takes his salvage ship the Rocinante on its last journey in The Expanse. He and his crew are caught in a conflict launched by Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander), a zealot who has inflamed his downtrodden people living in the asteroid belt, known as Belters. “The tables have turned,” exec producer Naren Shankar says. “The Belters have waged a war on [their former exploiters] Earth and Mars.” (Credit: Amazon Studios) Holden committed the Rocinante to stopping Marco and his Free Navy from launching asteroid rocks at Earth. “The crew has been on a jeopardy-filled recon mission for months, and they are worn down,” he adds. But Shankar warns of “dangers beyond Marco” on the final six episodes (released weekly). As Earth’s U.N. secretary-general (Shohreh Aghdashloo) sends former Martian Marine Bobbie Draper (Frankie Adams...

Although The Expanse rearranged the order of some character introductions over the years, each season for the most part followed the conflict of each successive book in the James S. A. Corey series. Season one followed Leviathan Wakes, season two followed Caliban’s War, and so on. But with the ninth and final novel recently released, how can the show possibly wrap up the story in a way that will satisfy fans and resolve the issues brought about by the introduction of alien technology into the solar system?
The short answer is: it doesn’t need to. Ty Franck, one half of the writing duo that wrote the novels and also writes for the show, told us in a recent interview, “We’re not doing the last three books in six episodes. There’s a natural stopping point after book six, or at least a natural pause point. So it...

Amazon Studios’ sci-fi drama The Expanse has always been a fighter, and it is gearing up to go out with a bang based on the key Season 5 episode titled “Gaugamela,” the script of which serves as the latest entry in Deadline’s It Starts On the Page, our series that highlights the scripts that serve as the creative backbones of the now-underway TV awards season.
The scripts are all being submitted for Emmy consideration this year and have been selected using criteria that includes critical acclaim, a range of networks and platforms, and a mix of established and lesser-known shows.
In November, Amazon gave an early and final renewal for a Season 6 of The Expanse just ahead of its 10-episode Season 5 premiere. It set in motion an endgame to the Alcon-produced series, which is based on the bestselling book series by James S.A. Corey (the nom de plume...

The reunion of the Rocinante crew (minus one) and Avasarala’s return to power provided some measure of resolution in The Expanse season 5 finale, but even with season 6 being the final outing for the show, the story of the protomolecule is far from over. Showrunner Naren Shankar helped shed some light on those final moments, including the nature of Laconia and the status of several characters whose arcs are ongoing.
The Rogue Martians Bring the Protomolecule to Laconia
Let’s start at the end and work backwards. There was something dangerously familiar about the dark swirls that engulfed Sauveterre and Babbage as the Barkeith passed through the gate to Laconia.
“These are the things that Holden’s been concerned about from the very beginning of the season,” explains Shankar. “When he goes to Fred’s office, and he says, ‘I think there are entities inside the Ring.

This The Expanse article includes Major spoilers for the ending of Season 5, Episode 10.
Much like Marco Inaros, The Expanse Season 5 finale writers used a bit of misdirect to distract from the fact that, while (most of) the crew of the Rocinante were finally reunited and Acting Secretary General Chrisjen Avasarala was gathering her team in preparation for war, the culmination of Marco’s deal with a rogue Martian fleet was coming to a head. In the final moments of “Nemesis Games,” the shape of the alliance between Inaros and the rogue Martian fleet (including the Barkeith) comes into focus, and it is not good news for Chrisjen & Co. But, before we get into that, let’s recap what happened with the Barkeith and the rogue Martian faction this season, and how we got to The Battle For the Sol Gate and the alien worlds beyond.

Everyone sees themselves in the oppressed Belters of The Expanse, from liberal champions of the poor to elite-hating blue collar conservatives. On social media, fans proudly declare, “We are beltalowda!” using the collective pronoun in the Belter creole language to show their solidarity with their fellow downtrodden. But with Marco’s more extreme faction taking charge in season 5, how do the writers reconcile audience sympathy with the devastating terrorist actions on display?
Writer Daniel Abraham, who is in the writers room and who writes The Expanse novels with collaborator Ty Franck under the name James S. A. The Expanse is one of the most successful sci-fi adaptations on television in that it somehow has been able to tweak the story that it adapted from the James S. A. Corey series to fit the small screen while still faithfully honoring the overall narrative, which will conclude with a ninth novel in 2021. However, the news that The Expanse season 6 would be the show’s final run has fans of the books wondering how the remaining plot can possibly be wrapped up in a satisfying manner.
Without spoiling story details for non-readers, it is possible to speculate about ways that The Expanse writers could bring in elements of the currently unadapted novels in an accelerated fashion. This is especially true if they managed to presciently compact the rise and fall of Marco Inaros as the central antagonist in both Nemesis Games, the fifth book which forms the core of the upcoming season 5, and its successor,...

The Expanse has officially set course toward a bittersweet threshold crossed by many-a-beloved shows: an advance renewal for its final season.

The Expanse is coming to an end.
Amazon has ordered a sixth and final season of the sci-fi drama, three weeks ahead of its fifth season premiere.
Deadline has also revealed that Cas Anvar, who faced a string of sexual misconduct allegations earlier this year, will not be back for the final season.
The rest of the cast, including Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, and Wes Chatham are expected to return.

Instead of airing all episodes in one batch, the streamer is rolling them out weekly, in a similar vein to The Boys Season 2.

Amazon is keeping The Expanse in orbit for a bit longer, renewing the sci-fi drama for a sixth and final season, TVLine has learned. The news comes less than a month before the show returns for its fifth season on Wednesday, Dec. 16.
While most of the show’s cast will return for the final season, Cas Anvar — who was the subject of a sexual misconduct investigation earlier this year — will not be back as Alex Kamal.

“The Expanse” has been renewed for Season 6 at Amazon, which will also be the show’s last.
The news comes ahead of the show’s fifth season on the streamer, which will debut on Dec. 16. This will mark the second time the show has come to an end.
“The Expanse” aired its first three seasons on Syfy, with the cable networking having cancelled the series back in 2019. Shortly after it was cancelled, it was reported that Amazon was in talks to continue the series, which is produced and fully financed by Alcon Television Group.
The series is set in the future where humanity has colonized the solar system and the people of Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt have long been in opposition with one another. When the crew of the Rocinante uncovers an ancient alien technology, a vast conspiracy begins to emerge, one that will bring the solar system to the brink of war.

Fans awaiting the premiere of The Expanse season 5 may think they know Amos Burton and the other members of the Rocinante crew pretty well by now, and readers of the James S.A. Corey novels are likely smug about their foreknowledge of the events to come. However, a recent EW interview with showrunner Naren Shankar reveals that adept viewers may already have many clues as to what they might learn about Amos’ past this year.
Shankar drew attention, for example, to the in-depth interview Monica Stuart did with the ship’s mechanic back in season 3. Amos confirmed that he started as a union apprentice without a sponsor after escaping the slums of Baltimore by winning a lottery drawing, and Monica was suspicious of the amazing good fortune for a kid who grew up on Basic. Could it be more than a matter of luck?

Way back in The Expanse Season 1, before the Roci left Tycho on their mission to find “Lionel Polanski,” Naomi told Fred Johnson: “One day, I’m gonna ask you to find someone no questions asked.” Readers of the book series no doubt realized right away that this was a reference to Filip, Naomi’s long-lost son with charismatic and manipulative Opa terrorist Marco Inaros, but TV viewers didn’t hear Naomi bring up her son until well into Season 2. Later, we find out that Naomi hasn’t seen now-teen Filip since he was a baby.
In Season 4, finding Filip is no doubt increasingly on Naomi’s mind, both as tensions between the Opa and Earth rise and as Naomi sees her own regrets reflected in Lucia’s struggles on Ilus. It all comes to a head in the Season 4 finale, when Naomi calls Fred Johnson to call in her favor.

In the content space race currently being fought out in the entertainment industry, shows getting picked up by one platform after being dumped by another is becoming a more frequent phenomenon.
Some moves feel more like a marriage of convenience, while others feel like a more obvious fit.
Take “The Expanse” moving to Amazon Prime Video after three seasons on Syfy, for instance. Season 4 of the high-concept space series dropped Thursday on the streamer, and most involved in the story of how “The Expanse” was rescued agree that Amazon was a better fit for the galactic caper all along.
Much has been written of the wild story of how “The Expanse” fell into Amazon’s lap. To recap, fans paid for a plane to fly over the Amazon Studios offices with a #SaveTheExpanse banner; “Game of Thrones” creator George R.R. Martin (among others) sent a message to Amazon’s CEO...

Showrunner Naren Shankar and lead actor Dominique Tipper spoke to us from the set of The Expanse to tease elements of the coming season.
Dominique Tipper, who plays Naomi Nagata on The Expanse, was the very first interviewee we ever had on the Sci Fi Fidelity podcast back when we began in September of 2016, just when the Syfy show was getting started, and showrunner Naren Shankar visited with us in February of 2017 during season 2. Now, the two key players in the success of this space science fiction TV show join us once more from the set of season 5, which is currently filming in Toronto, to preview season 4. We asked them to tell us more about the storyline to come taking place on Ilus, the first planet encountered by humans beyond the Ring gates.

Has The Expanse's "hard science fiction" genre classification kept you from checking out the show? It shouldn't!
Like all of the best TV shows, The Expanse is both a shining example of its predominant genre and a story that breaks free of its genre boxes to become something greater. It's a drama with the political nerdiness of The West Wing, the narrative scope of Game of Thrones, and the thematic focus of Mad Men or Breaking Bad. It's one of the most diverse stories and worlds currently represented on screen, and it's telling stories about the dangers of demagoguery and tribalism that are deeply relevant to some of today's scariest world problems.
It's also a show I am constantly trying to convince people to watch—not so much the sci-fi nerds in my life, who have mostly already fallen in love with this sociopolitical space opera,...

The Expanse season 4 will explore the impact of hundreds of planets suddenly becoming accessible, according to showrunner Naren Shankar.
After a longer-than-normal absence due to its transition from Syfy to Prime Video, The Expanse season 4 will finally return on Friday, December 13, and, appropriately enough, the series will shift its entire perspective from the squabbles between Earth, Mars, and the Belt — although those certainly still exist — to the possibilities presented by the opening of the Ring gates in last season’s finale. Veteran showrunner Naren Shankar gave us his unique perspective on the story to come during a season 4 set visit last year, and he’s clearly thankful that Amazon rescued the show so that the adventures of the Rocinante could continue.
“What occurred when Syfy cancelled The Expanse was remarkable,” Shankar admitted. “It was a fan community that we had engaged with on Twitter. We would do...

The teaser trailer for Season 4 of The Expanse was just unveiled at New York Comic Con by the show’s new mothership, Amazon Prime Video, which imported the franchise after Syfy cancelled it after three seasons.

Amazon has acquired worldwide subscription-streaming rights to the first three seasons of “The Expanse,” the space thriller that originally aired on Syfy, leading up to Prime Video’s debut of season 4 later in 2019.
Seasons 1-2 of “The Expanse” are currently available in the U.S. on Prime Video. All three seasons, comprising 36 episodes in all, will become available on the service in over 200 countries and territories starting Feb. 8.
Amazon picked up the fourth season of “The Expanse” after NBCUniversal’s Syfy cancelled the show last year. Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon, announced that deal in May 2018 at the National Space Society’s International Space Development Conference in L.A. (Amazon hasn’t announced a premiere date for season 4.) Bezos has a personal passion for space exploration, having founded space-aeronautics and spaceflight company Blue Origin in 2000.

Executive producer Naren Shankar believes if he was trying to get “The Expanse” started today, “it straight-up would go to a streamer. There’s no way this show would have ever gone onto basic cable.”
IndieWire sat down with Shankar at the San Diego Comic-Con before his panel celebrating the show’s rescue, and he was in an understandably great mood. After three seasons on Syfy, the show had been officially canceled as of early May 2018, but it only took a few weeks for Amazon Studios to step in and revive the series for a fourth season.
“It was a really good working relationship on the creative side,” Shankar said of working with Syfy. “I think just the economics of television on basic cable, the fact that they didn’t own the show, that made it very tough. The deal that had created ‘The Expanse’ initially on Syfy, that’s from six years ago.

The first episode of Amazon’s Tom Clancy adaptation “Jack Ryan” saw its U.S. public debut Friday afternoon in Ballroom 20 at San Diego Comic-Con. And as it happens, the show works pretty well, not only as decent counter-programming for the convention, but if the episode is any guide, for the source material too.
Star John Krasinski turns out to be a very credible fit to play the lode-bearing Clancy-verse character. Co-star Wendell Pierce’s beleaguered, on-his-last-second-chance CIA official James Greer, is a good counterweight to Krasinski’s anxious yet mild-mannered approach to playing Jack Ryan.
On the other hand, given the show’s setting, legitimate concerns can be raised about the kind of roles actors of West Asian descent are offered, and how people from those cultures are portrayed. However, a last-minute reveal that felt askance of the worldview Tom Clancy expressed in his dozens of novels suggests the...
