As Renny Harlin’s Deep Blue Sea continues to be eulogized as B-grade, feeding-frenzy excellence (now and forever), Darin Scott’s Deep Blue Sea 2 will be forgotten, ignored and seen only as malodorous sequel chum. How *dare* drug-doped supersharks be associated with such a nonsensically rudderless dive, as submerged survival “fun” is drained well before the dam breaks wide open. Restrained budgets are one thing, but a three-person writing team’s concocted solution around big-budget finback effects is a middle-finger to Harlin’s masterful underwater massacre (in comparison). Hell, even Shark Night 3D looks infallible next to this Open Water 3: Cage Dive of a franchise torpedo.

Though it risks being overshadowed quite spectacularly by The Meg and its own ginormous fish, Deep Blue Sea 2 is now on the verge of hitting Blu-ray and DVD, and the folks over at Bloody Disgusting has uncovered a brand new clip to prove it.
Placing a particular focus on the new characters headlining Darin Scott’s long-in-development horror sequel, up above you’ll see the moment when tensions rise between Dr. Misty Calhoun (Danielle Savre) and pharmaceutical billionaire Carl Durant (Michael Beach), who evidently has more money than sense – much to the horror of Savre’s protagonist.
She soon discovers that Durant and his team are experimenting on bull sharks, a species of fish known for their aggression and killer instinct…and that’s before the humans even begin their tests. As far as shark movies go, this is a pretty familiar calm before the inevitable storm. But with...

"We're going to pull together and find a way to get out of here! First, we're gonna seal off this pool." Hopefully, this new batch of shark conservationists in Deep Blue Sea 2 doesn't end up like the person I just quoted, Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson) from the first movie, and get eaten by any Great White sharks. We'll find out soon enough when Deep Blue Sea 2 comes to home media on April 17th:

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, Syfy and director Darin Scott launch plans for a Deep Blue Sea 2.
Indeed, it’s going on 20 years since the arrival of Renny Harlin’s cult thriller, in which a herd of frenzied, bio-engineered sharks begin turning on their captors. Think of it as the long-lost ancestor to Sharknado and you’ll begin to get a sense of the tone and over-the-top shlock horror underpinning Harlin’s 90s pic.
And though its upcoming sequel doesn’t make room for any of the original cast members – sorry, Samuel L. Jackson – this clever fan edit imagines a scenario in which the Deep Blue Sea gang react to the sequel’s bat-shit trailer. “Somebody please…tell me what that is.”
Sure, the chroma key is a little off, but it’s a fun edit from The Drew Reviews Podcast (h/t Bloody Disgusting) nonetheless.

Deep Blue Sea, Renny Harlin’s 1999 sci-fi/horror fest that released during a fairly busy summer season, is a concept that would seem right up the alley of a Syfy original. Which is why it’s totally appropriate that the company is now bringing us a sequel in the form of Deep Blue Sea 2.
Set to revolve around “a scientist conducting experiments on bull sharks,” which naturally doesn’t go well, we’re finally beginning to learn more about what’s in store. After the film’s first trailer dropped over the weekend, we’ve now been gifted some details on when exactly it’ll debut and what else we’ll see on the Blu-ray.

I'm sure you all remember Samuel L. Jackson's 1999 shark film Deep Blue Sea. Some say it featured one of the most surprising and unexpected deaths in movie history. Right as Samuel L. Jackson is about to give a big inspiring speech, from out of nowhere, a Shark jumps out of the water and eats him. I thought it was a fun flick, and now there's a sequel that, of course, looks even more ridiculous than the first movie.
20 years after the first film, we are getting Deep Blue Sea 2, which follows shark conservationist Dr. Misty Calhoun (Danielle Savre), who is "invited to consult on a new, top secret project run by pharmaceutical billionaire Carl Durant (Michael Beach). When science meddles with the time-tested process of nature and nurture, the outcome can be deadly."

Deep Blue Sea, Renny Harlin’s 1999 sci-fi/horror fest that was unleashed during a pretty loaded summer season, is a concept that would seem right up the alley of a Syfy original.
For those unfamiliar with it, here’s the gist. In an effort to cure Alzheimer’s, a team of scientists working on a floating laboratory named Aquatica in the middle of the ocean have genetically engineered a trio of Mako sharks whose brain tissue fluids, once drained, serve as the key to unlocking the cure. Unfortunately, the sharks’ increased brain size only results in making the beasts even smarter, and it’s not long before the sharks enact a plan to gain their own freedom by picking off everyone they can and sinking the facility itself in the process.
As you probably know, there’s nothing deep about Deep Blue Sea. It knows it’s not Jaws, and...

Have we entered a new golden age for shark movies? Probably not, but that isn’t stopping Syfy from commissioning a “Deep Blue Sea” sequel 18 years after the original. The move follows the recent success of both “The Shallows” and “47 Meters Down,” not to mention Syfy’s own “Sharknado” series.

Now that we’re nearly 20 years removed and the dust has settled on the 1990s, the decade long believed to be a wasteland for horror movies is finally being reconsidered for the number of really good films it actually did produce. Because there weren’t as many horror movies being released as in the 1980s and because the genre wasn’t part of the cultural conversation the way it previously had been, critics and audiences didn’t know what to make of a number of titles as they slowly dripped out over the course of the decade. That led to some unfairly negative reviews and disappointing box office results as horror movies were given a bad name, until they began finding their audiences on home video just a few years later. This is great news, because it means that Tales from the Hood is finally getting its due as one...

Scream Factory brings an under-appreciated horror anthology to Collector’s Edition Blu-ray.
Great horror anthologies are hard to come by these days, but luckily there are still plenty to be rediscovered thanks to home video labels like Scream Factory. 1995’s Tales from the Hood is a highly entertaining blend of horror and social commentary from director Rusty Cundieff (who co-wrote alongside Darin Scott who also co-wrote an earlier horror anthology From a Whisper to a Scream), and it’s now found a new home on Blu-ray. Keep reading as we take a look at the film and new Collector’s Edition Blu-ray.
As with all the best anthology films Tales from the Hood features a wraparound tale (“Welcome to My Mortuary”) from which the individual stories are born, and the script couldn’t have chosen a better setting. Three gang-bangers come to a mortuary to pick up a shipment of drugs, and...

Considering all of the posthumous releases that are primed to grant audiences one last glimpse of an actor or actress who left this life too soon, Brittany Murphy’s name comes as a startling inclusion given it’s the year 2015. After passing away on December 20, 2009, her last role will come some six years later as a child psychologist in Darin Scott’s psychological thriller Something Wicked. Why do I mention this fact? Only because of the disturbing pull quote on the front of the DVD sleeve for Something Wicked – “Brittany Murphy’s Final Movie.” Am I the only one who takes issue with such a blatant exploitation of the actress’ unfortunate passing?
But this isn’t an editorial on the morality of marketing material. My only job here is to review a film that comes across as a tonally ambiguous psycho-thriller that blends the blinding qualities of love with the unpredictable state of mental illness.

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

There's no question that lately there's been a resurgence in horror anthology films, due in no small part to the success of the V/H/S franchise, and now one indie filmmaker is taking a look at the subgenre with the doc We Come in Pieces: The Rebirth of the Horror Anthology Film.
From the Press Release
We Come In Pieces is a documentary short that chronicles and celebrates the past, present, and future of horror anthology films.
When filmmaker Ryan Spindell (Kirksdale, The Root of the Problem) set out to make his horror anthology film The Mortuary Collection, producers rejected it outright. Time and time again, he was told that horror anthologies are dead at the studio level, but the question no one seemed to be able to answer was why?
To find out, Spindell teamed up with documentary filmmaker Ben Hethcoat (Dead Dad, D.I.Y), and together...

It's hard to believe, but Brittany Murphy--who won our hearts as way harsh Tai in Clueless--passed away more than four years ago. Yet it is only now that her final film role is coming to theaters. It's a thriller from director Darin Scott called Something Wicked and you can get a peak at it above in its newly unveiled trailer. THR has shared Something Wicked's first preview, which sets up a story of a beautiful woman experiencing some serious trauma. One Tree Hill's Shantel VanSanten stars as Christine, a bride-to-be with a bright future whose life is thrown for a look when a gruesome car accident kills her parents. As her wedding day approaches, however, her grief is just the beginning of her problems. Is it post-traumatic stress--as Murphy's psychiatrist character diagnoses above--or is she being stalked? Let's be honest: this trailer is an absolute mess.

Gruesome secrets from their past collide, however, with sinister forces of the present to ensure these newlyweds do not live "happily-ever-after." Shantel VanSanten, John Robinson, Julian Morris and James Patrick Stuart also star.

• Brittany Murphy: obituary
The late Brittany Murphy's final movie is to debut on the big screen more than four years after filming was completed, according to the New York Daily News.
Something Wicked's writer and producer, Joe Colleran, said the low-budget thriller would screen in Eugene, Oregon, near to locations where it was shot in 2009, on 4 April. He said editors had taken special care to present Murphy's final performance to filmgoers in the best format possible.
"It is an additional responsibility; you do want her performance to be the best it can be, because unfortunately it's her last performance," Colleran told the newspaper. "The first months of reviewing the footage and starting to put things together and then seeing her and hearing her voice, it's very emotional. It has been an extremely protracted process,...

It's been three years since Brittany Murphy died, on Dec. 20, 2009, from a fatal combination of prescription drugs, pneumonia and iron deficiency.
The actress, who died at 32, had come a long way since her days as a gum-snapping high school student in 1995's "Clueless," in which she starred alongside Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd. No one had any clue idea just how big they were going to get.
"When we were making the movie, you don’t think the movie’s going to be good. You think, I’m making the next 'License to Drive'. You think this movie’s going to be just for teenagers and that’s it," actor Donald Faison told Entertainment Weekly at a 17-year "Clueless" reunion in October.

Three years after her death, Brittany Murphy’s final film is going to see the light of day—or at least the light of straight-to-dvd release. Murphy completed Something Wicked before she died in December 2009, but post-production on the “suspenseful thriller about obsession and young love gone wrong” wasn’t actually completed until this year. Now that the movie is done, director Darin Scott is shopping it around, though no distributors have actually bitten yet, making the whole quest that much sadder. This is actually the second time this year a long-delayed film featuring a gone-too-soon star has been ...

At the very least, it’s finished. According to the La Times, Something Wicked, an indie project with the ignoble distinction of being Brittany Murphy‘s last film appearance before her death in 2009, has been completed and is currently seeking distribution. The only problem is that the project has little going for it other than that distinction. Director Darin Scott has been behind the camera for a handful of middling flicks (Dark House, Caught Up), and Murphy was the only notable name in the cast. Even the synopsis, “As a young couple embarks upon their wedding plans, gruesome secrets from their past collide with sinister forces of the present to ensure these newlyweds do not live “happily-ever-after,” isn’t all that rousing — leaving this movie as little more than a curiosity. Maybe Murphy fans will rally for its release?...

American Horror House starring Morgan Fairchild and Alessandra Torresani premieres tonight at 9/8c on Syfy.
Synopsis:
On Halloween night a sorority house is overrun with ghosts while a vengeful housemother goes on a killing spree. The American Horror House Original Movie is directed by Darin Scott (Dark House) and stars Morgan Fairchild and Alessandra Torresani.Entertainment Weekly says:
Continuing Syfy's schlock legacy, Horror pits buxom sorority pledges against an evil housemother (Morgan Fairchild) who's harvesting the souls of unfortunate visitors. The gore, acting, and screenplay are decidedly camp — which I suspect is kind of the point — making for silly, brainless Halloween fun. And to prove it's ultra-contemporary, it's all set to dubstep! No, really.
And from Shock Till You Drop:
American Horror House works because it does not take itself seriously and has modest ambitions. With healthy doses of sniping sorority girls and plenty of pop culture references, very often it is intentionally funny.

Syfy's 13th Day of Halloween proves dreadfully unlucky for the partygoers and sorority pledges in tonight's original movie, American Horror House. Morgan Fairchild and Alessandra Torresani co-star in this ghostly tale directed by Darin Scott (Femme Fatales, Dark House).
Last week screen icon Morgan Fairchild spoke with reporters about her wide-ranging career, this film and what it was like making it.
She began by revealing her fandom for these kinds of films, which was the primarily reason she agreed to play Ms. Margot here. "I must confess I’m quite a devotee of the Syfy movie channel. I watch Syfy movies on the weekends. I’ve always enjoyed these kinds of fun movies. Even when I'm not at home, my boyfriend knows to record their new nine o'clock movies for me every Saturday. I like monsters and ghosts and I’m a big vampire fan. I loved Dracula and Frankenstein and all of that.

If you are looking for something original or suspenseful, do not bother with the Syfy Channel’s American Horror House, airing on Saturday, October 13th as part of the network’s 31 Days of Halloween.
However, if you happen to be in the mood for some goofy fun and, generally speaking, enjoy Syfy fare, look no further.
Penned by Syfy veteran Anthony Ferrante (Haunted High, Leprechaun’s Revenge, Headless Horseman) and directed by Darin Scott, who helmed Dark House and co-wrote Tales from the Hood, American Horror House is a convoluted mess. It kicks off with a little girl murdering her parents in bed and immediately jumps to the present. Who they all were and when the murders occurred is unclear.
