If you cast your mind back a little ways you may recall Twitch raving about a scifi experiment titled Epoch, the footage all repurposed by director Anthony Scott Burns from elements he had shot for Paul Van Dyk's album Evolution. The footage was quite simply stunning, so much so that it raised the possibility that in Burns my cold Canadian home may have a fledgling new scifi visionary to call its own. If you're not already hip to the name Kishi Bashi, it's only a matter of time before you get there. The solo project from indie violinist and master sonic looper Kaoru Ishibashi (who goes by K) has been sending critics into raptures since even before the release of the debut Kishi Bashi album 151A this April. NPR's Stephen Thompson called the Virginia native's “one-man orchestra” of violin, beatboxing and English and Japanese vocals a breakout of South By Southwest. The Washington Post reported at least one woman openly weeping at a Kishi Bashi concert, and Andrew Bird comparisons are already piling on like so many violin loops.

If you’re wondering why Google is featuring Gumby on its homepage today, look no further. Today would have been the 90th birthday of Gumby creator Art Clokey. The interactive stop motion homepage doodle features the best-known characters from Clokey’s creation, which has lived in pop culture for more than five decades. “Art Clokey was an innovator in the field of animation and also a compassionate, inspiring artist,” said Google doodler Sophia Foster-Dimino. “We were excited to work with the incredibly talented animator Anthony Scott to produce this doodle, and we hope that it brightens your day!”
