Updated, with complete remarks: President Joe Biden told the crowd at a fundraiser this evening, “You’re the reason that Donald Trump is a former president, or he hates when I say it, a defeated president.”
At the Holmby Hills home of designer Michael Smith and former ambassador James Costos, Biden rallied his donors, many of whom backed him in the last campaign, while turning his focus on his likely 2024 rival. He spent a substantial part of his remarks warning of Trump as a threat to democracy, a contrast that many of the president’s steadfast backers believe will boost support as the 2024 campaign gets in full swing.
“Literally, I believe, the future of democracy is at stake,” Biden said, according to a pool report. “The greatest threat Trump poses is to our democracy, because if we lost that, we lose everything.” Read his complete remarks at the end of the story.

HBO debuted the trailer for Year One: A Political Odyssey, which examines President Joe Biden’s first year in office, with what the premium network calls a “rare glimpse into the inner working of the White House.”
A standout moment from the trailer is via Secretary of State Antony Blinken, talking about the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. “President [Ashraf] Ghani said to me on the phone, ‘I will stay and fight to the death. he fled the country the next day,” Blinken says, underscoring the extent to which the administration was taken by surprise as the country so quickly fell to the Taliban.
But other moments suggest that key figures learned from Afghanistan and sought to get ahead of the Russian threat to Ukraine, as Biden built alliances that were in place when Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion.

The Jan. 6 committee is requesting voluntary cooperation from Sean Hannity, Chair Bennie Thompson and Vice Chair Liz Cheney wrote in a letter released Tuesday. The letter cites previously unreleased text messages obtained by the committee, including one sent on Jan. 10 in which the Fox News host appears to express concern over what Trump might do ahead of Biden’s inauguration.
“Guys, we have a clear path to land the plane in 9 days,” Hannity wrote to then-Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). “He can’t mention the election again.

The explanation by the Saudi Arabian government that 60-year-old, out-of-shape Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed during a fist fight against hardened security men is being soundly dismissed by politicians and media on Sunday morning news analysis programs.
Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government, disappeared October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. After denying a role in the Khashoggi disappearance, the Saudi government finally admitted late last week that he died during his meeting there. The Turkish government, which claims it has recordings of Khashoggi’s murder, said it will release its report on Tuesday.
Saudi Arabia has initiated its own “investigation” into Khashoggi’s death led by Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman (known as Mbs), the heir apparent to the kingdom and a major Hollywood/tech industry player. The official U.S. position is to wait and see the results of that. But analysts on Sunday...

Saudi officials confirmed the death of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi this evening, announced in the dead of night, Saudi time.
According to the Saudi prosecutor general, a violent altercation broke out while Khashoggi was being interrogated in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 4.
Yeah, because they were trying to kill him, shot back California Rep. Adam Schiff, ranking Democrat on the House intelligence committee, who on Friday night stated the obvious, that Saudi Arabia’s claim that he was “killed while brawling with a team of more than a dozen dispatched from Saudi Arabia is not credible.”
If Khashoggi was fighting inside the consulate, he was “fighting for his life with people sent to capture or kill him,” Schiff said, adding that if the Trump administration won’t hold Saudi Arabia accountable for Khashoggi’s death, Congress will.

Exclusive: The WGA West’s political action committee has endorsed 12 Senate and 15 House candidates in the upcoming midterms “who support the guild’s public policy priorities.” Dianne Feinstein, Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff are among the recipients of Pac money, and they’re all Democrats except for Vermont’s Bernie Sanders, a Socialist who caucuses with the Dems.
All the senatorial candidates are incumbents, but four of the House candidates are challengers who the Pac says could “help flip the House” from Republican to Democratic control.
The Pac, which is seeking donations in a push to regain Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, has made some $450,000 in campaign contributions since 2009. It relies strictly on voluntary donations – guild members’ dues are not involved.
“I’m very proud of the continuing development and influence of our Pac since its founding ten years ago,” WGA West president David A. Goodman told Deadline.

Washington — President Donald Trump is revoking the security clearance of former CIA director John Brennan, who has been critical of Trump in TV appearances and on Twitter.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, reading a statement from Trump, said Brennan engaged in “erratic conduct and behavior” and “has a history that calls into question his objectivity and credibility.” The statement also cited Brennan’s “wild outbursts” online and on TV about the administration and his “increasingly frenzied commentary.” Brennan is senior national security and intelligence analyst for NBC News and MSNBC.
She announced that security clearances for other former officials, including Susan Rice, James Clapper and Sally Yates, are under review. All are former Obama administration officials, but Sanders contended that they “politicized” and “in some cases monetized” their clearances. Last year Google changed its search algorithm in a way that was supposed to demote the rankings of Web sites that had been identified as persistent copyright violators. But there’s “no evidence” that the change has affected search-driven traffic to the sites, the MPAA says today based on a study it commissioned to follow up on the matter. “The share of referral traffic from Google to infringing sites included in the Google Transparency Report remained flat in the three months following Google’s implementation of the change last August.” This is important, MPAA chief Chris Dodd says, because search engines “bear responsibility for introducing people to infringing content — even people who aren’t actively looking for it.” Research firm Compete Inc. studied how many Internet users accessed URLs of 12M film and TV content sites that had hosted infringing content from 2010 to 2012, but not P2P sites or applications.

New York -- MPAA chairman and CEO Dan Glickman joined lawmakers Wednesday in calling for governments around the world to boost efforts to protect intellectual property as a key group of legislators named Canada, China, Mexico, Russia and Spain as countries where piracy has reached alarming levels.
The co-chairs of the Congressional International Anti-Piracy Caucus, Sheldon Whitehouse, Orrin Hatch, Adam Schiff and Bob Goodlatte, released the group's 2009 Priority Watch List Wednesday, highlighting the five countries as key piracy offenders.
At a press conference with them, Glickman argued that dealing with escalating IP theft is especially needed during these difficult economic times as the creative industries generate millions of jobs each year, including 2.5 million in the motion picture sector alone.
"During tough economic times it becomes even clearer how important it is to protect those industries that are truly creating jobs and generating revenue," Glickman said. "It is extremely important that U.

I’ve been hearing about the expansion of the Law & Order franchise to London for a while now, and when I was there last week, I kept seeing this ad on ITV for the show. Somehow I had managed to not hear that both Jamie Bamber (from Battlestar Galactica, of course) and Freema Agyeman (from Doctor Who and Torchwood) were starring in the show until I saw the ad for the first time. (Plus: Bill Paterson as the Adam Schiff character? Perfect!) This is unlikely to air on American TV, so I’ll have to resort to alternative means to see it. Wish I didn’t have to, but there we are. Law and Order UK debuts in the U.K. on February 23 on ITV.

BEIJING -- U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff said Wednesday that he would urge U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman to file a lawsuit against China with the World Trade Organization for violation of intellectual property rights. Schiff, Democratic Representative of the 29th District of California, whose constituents include the Walt Disney Co. and Warner Bros., said that Chinese government officials he met on a weeklong visit here did not deny rampant piracy as they had in years past but were doing too little to stamp it out. "I was a prosecutor for six years and would have jumped at a case with the kind of overwhelming evidence of wrongdoing that exists in China," Schiff said Wednesday before returning to Washington.

BEIJING -- U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff, whose constituents include Disney and Warner Bros., on Tuesday expressed Washington's growing concern about the piracy of American goods and lack of access to China's market during the seventh round of U.S.-China Interparliamentary Exchange, which opened here Monday. Schiff, a Democrat from the 29th District of California, indicated hope but a degree of impatience after meetings with representatives from China's Ministry of Commerce and the State Administration of Radio Film and Television, China's top broadcast media regulator. "China has shown every capability to crack down on intellectual property theft and open its markets. What's still lacking is the will," Schiff said in an interview after a news conference.

WASHINGTON -- A group of nearly 60 lawmakers launched the International Anti-Piracy Caucus on Tuesday in an effort to pressure foreign governments to adopt more stringent copyright protections. The lawmakers -- led by Sens. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., and Joe Biden, D-Del., and Reps. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and Adam Schiff, D-Calif. -- hope the new caucus can help convince other governments of the importance to the United States and local economies of protecting intellectual property. "There are a lot of ways we can influence the conduct of foreign affairs," Biden said. By bringing up the issue of piracy with ambassadors here and government officials when lawmakers travel abroad, the caucus members hope to raise awareness of the issue to a higher level. Caucus members named Brazil, China, Pakistan, Russia and Taiwan as target countries.
