Calling Dr. Mark Greene. Please report to the Broadway stage.
ER star Anthony Edwards made his Broadway musical debut Friday night as “Dr. Walker” in the Tony-nominated Girl From The North Country. With several members of the company out of the show because of Covid-19 infections, Edwards stepped in at the last moment (and after only an hour of rehearsal time) to ensure that the show would go on.
He starred opposite his wife, Mare Winningham, who was recently nominated for a Tony Award for her role.
Lead producer of Girl From The North Country Tristan Baker made a pre-show announcement to express his gratitude to the production’s swings and understudies, and let the house know they were in for an extra special show. Baker asked if “There was a doctor in the house” to play the role of Dr. Walker this evening, before surprising the audience with the...

The acclaimed Bob Dylan musical Girl From The North Country will play its final Broadway performance at The Belasco Theatre on Jan. 23, with producers saying they’re in advanced conversations with the Shubert Organization to re-open in the spring after the Omicron surge subsides.
The unusual announcement follows a similar plan confirmed by producers of Mrs. Doubtfire, which closed on Jan. 10 with the intention of returning to the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on March 14.
“Girl From The North Country is an important part of this season,” said Robert E. Wankel, Chairman and CEO of The Shubert Organization, in a statement. “We have always been supportive of this show, and we are excited about bringing it to another theater in the spring.”

Hadestown and Girl From The North Country announced their Broadway returns today, with the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown set to become the first production to resume performances on Broadway when its curtain rises on Thursday, Sept. 2.
Girl From The North Country, the musical that features songs from Bob Dylan’s catalogue, will resume performances on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
The Hadestown re-launch will mark the first Broadway production to begin performances since the March 12, 2020, pandemic shutdown. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had previously said that Broadway would be permitted to open at full capacity on Sept. 14, but Hadestown producers said today that the early opening was worked out in coordination with the Jujamcyn Theaters, owner of the Hadestown’s Walter Kerr Theatre, the Governor’s office and in cooperation with The Broadway League.
A spokesperson for Hadestown said the early relaunch is due to the timing of the Hadestown touring production schedule:...

The Other Place is a tight, witty, and powerful piece of theater. There has been an upwelling of solid straight plays on Broadway and Off-Broadway stages as of late, and The Other Place is only going to make it all the more difficult for Tony voters to pick their winners. However, Laurie Metcalf should make it considerably easier for those voters to select a winner for Leading Actress in a Play.
Metcalf [left] is stunning. Playing the role of Juliana, she commits wholeheartedly to a whirlwind of a transformation, falling from a collected, confident, and sexy career woman to a lost and weeping shadow of her former self. Bringing the audience with her on this journey of disintegration, Metcalf’s presence is commanding, breathing with a natural flow as she unravels before our eyes in a flurry of loss and regret.
Daniel Stern provides a reassuring presence, which alters in perception...

Broadway is doing a lot of shuffling lately. The critically adored “Peter and the Starcatcher” returns to its Off-Broadway roots with a planned opening at New World Stages later this year after ending its Broadway run on Jan. 20. American Repertory Theater’s “Pippin” will become the first-ever Broadway revival of the musical when it lands at the Music Box Theatre in the spring. And on Jan. 10, “The Other Place” will open on the Main Stem, after a celebrated run in 2011 at McC Theater. “It’s really rare when you get a second chance on a piece,” said actor John Schiappa, who appeared in “The Other Place” at the Lucille Lortel and is in the Broadway cast. “Not only just to get to do it again within a short span of time and dig into it even deeper but to move a show…is very exciting for all kinds of reasons.
