A round-up on the practical effects Greg Nicotero and co. used to achieve memorable moments in The Walking Dead (incl. Carl's hair)…
Warning: contains spoilers for The Walking Dead seasons 1-6. And gory images. Ugh.
Hairdressers exist after the undead apocalypse. We know this to be the case in The Walking Dead not only because we met one—Rick’s ill-fated girlfriend Jessie—but because the majority of characters have been able to maintain some kind of post-global destruction ‘do. Carol has a pixie crop. Daryl sports a complicated homage to Link from Zelda, and you could happily roll marbles around on Abraham’s flat-top all the live-long day.
One character though, has thus far defied the scissors: Carl Grimes. And now, after the events of season 6B, we know why.
“There’s a reason why [Carl’s] hair’s so long,” VFX veteran and director Greg Nicotero said in this Kimberley Potts interview.

While we try to figure out why the Emmys exist when incredible actors like "Hannibal's" Mads Mikkelsen and "Orphan Black's" Tatiana Maslany are snubbed, we do want to congratulate this year's few horror nominees, especially "American Horror Story: Coven" with 17 nods.
Below are the horror highlights. For the full rundown of all the talented nominees, visit the official Emmys website, and be sure to watch the live broadcast of the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards on NBC on Monday, August 25th, at 8:00 Pm Et/5:00 Pm Pt.
Also notable, if not quite horror, are "Game of Thrones" with 19 nominations (including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for Neil Marshall, Outstanding Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage, and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Lena Headey) and "True Detective" with 12 (including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor for both Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey).

I love watching these visual effects reels! I'm always surprised by what I see. Here's a very cool behind the scenes reel for The Walking Dead season 3 that was created by the team at Stargate Studios. It shows off a ton of bloody zombie kill VFX magic. This might as well be a Walking Dead zombie kill supercut. One of the most interesting things I saw in this video though was how little of the prison actually exists.
“It’s been the season of decapitations,” declares Stargate Studios visual effects supervisor Victor Scalise, reflecting on season three of AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead.’ In this series, the characters fortify themselves inside an abandoned prison while still trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. Stargate once again provided digital effects for the show, matching extensive practical and make-up effects work by Knb Efx Group (one of the co-founders of Knb, Greg Nicotero is a co-executive producer,...

Well, this is a shocker: "American Horror Story" has tied "Mad Men" to lead the nominees for 2012 Emmys with 17 nominations each. It did so in the category of "Miniseries or Movie" rather than "Drama Series", but we'll take it. Read on to learn what other genre shows are in the running - yes, "The Walking Dead" makes an appearance!

"The Walking Dead" went on a bit of a zombie killing spree at the end of last season, with the walkers overrunning Hershel's farm and our favorite survivors heading into the great unknown to escape them. But with the introduction of The Governor, the prison and Michonne, you can bet there's going to be plenty of gory undead deaths in the show's third season as well.
AMC has released a new featurette discussing some of the special effects we saw in the past season, and it introduces us to Victor Scalise, the visual director for "The Walking Dead's" special effects department. According to him, fans are going to love what "The Walking Dead" has planned for season three.
"Unfortunately a lot of that I can't tell you just yet, but we did a lot of killing last season, and this season we're doing a lot more," he teased.

AMC has released a new “Inside The Walking Dead” video feature that focus on the computer effects used in the show. Readers may not be aware how much computer-generated effects are used to subtly enhance scenes in every episode and visual FX Supervisor Victor Scalise shows off a number of scenes he worked on for the Season 2 finale:
“Massive walker herds. Exploding Cdc buildings. Even a looming prison. Each adds to the spectacle of The Walking Dead. What you may not realize, however, is that sometimes these visuals are generated by the computer-generated wizards at Stargate Studios. In this new behind-the-scenes video, Visual FX Supervisor Victor Scalise walks you through 3D effects added to the apocalyptic world of The Walking Dead. “As we hope with most of our work,” he says, “you don’t know they’re computer-generated.”...

But don’t get too worried (or excited, depending upon whether or not you love or hate spoilers) about the hint, it’s totally unspoilery. This new featurette from Victor Scalise of Stargate Studios and our friends at The Walking Dead is a really interesting look at what goes on after the shooting stops. More specifically, it shows what was done in the finale to add to the horror. Check it out:
Featurette: The Walking Dead – Inside The Walking Dead: Visual Effects
Yes! More zombies! Always more zombies! Never too many zombies!
The Walking Dead Season 3, starring Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies, Norman Reedus, Michael Rooker, Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Melissa McBride, Iron-e Singleton, Danai Gurira, and David Morrissey, premieres in October on AMC.

Victor Scalise must love his job. He is the visual director for The Walking Dead's special effects department and in this new featurette from AMC, he shows us how he and the rest of the team increase the intensity of the show using CGI walkers, landscapes and more. The zombies were created using motion-capture actors down in Los Angeles so using this method allows them to create a variety of movements to use on different walkers that are computer generated. He also shows us how the infamous prison scene was created. What did he have to say about Season 3? "Last season we had a lot of killing...this season we'll have a lot more" The Walking Dead is an American post-apocalyptic horror television series developed for television by Frank Darabont. It is based on the comic book series, The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard.

Victor Scalise is a guy with a very cool job. He's the visual director for "The Walking Dead's" special effects department and in a new featurette from AMC, Scalise talks about how he and other digital wizards ramp up the tension on the show and even add entire 3D computer-generated landscapes.
The CG crew used motion capture in Los Angeles to get footage of actors moving as zombies and now they've got several CG walkers they can insert in scenes. In the video, Scalise shows us which zombies from the Season 2 finale were added by his folks -- for instance, two zombies who are lurching behind Andrea (Laurie Holden) as she tries to get out of the utterly infested Hershel's farm.
He also shows us how CG animators built the finale's last scene, the pan to an aerial shot of the prison that we know will figure prominently in...
