The USA Network has picked up Carlton Cuse’s new show, Colony. His former colleague, Josh Holloway, has also signed on to lead the futuristic series for what’s turning out to be an unofficial Lost reunion.
Jumping onto the popular dystopia bandwagon, the show will take place in Los Angeles in 2015, following a mysterious foreign occupation. There’s no details of whether those intruders are from a different country or another planet. The concept of otherworldly visitors, and the downright bizarre shouldn’t be too much of a leap for Cuse or Holloway. The pair previously worked on ABC’s sci-fi adventure smash, Lost, about a group of plane crash survivors on a strange island.
For this new serial, they’ll join forces on for “a naturalistic drama about a family forced to make difficult choices as they balance staying together with surviving an existential threat to the human race.

In easily the better of the two Assault on President 13 films out last year White House Down gets a Blu-ray and DVD release on Monday and we’re using this moment as a springboard to look at the all the precedents; men who have taken on the mantle of the most powerful man in the world.
Roland Emmerich, the man in charge of peppering the White House and most of its staff with bombs and bullets, is no stranger to this particular arena. I remember well sitting in a crowded cinema about to watch Judge Dredd (Stallone/Helmetless version) and seeing the trailer for Independence Day, complete with the utter destruction of the White House. Jaws were dropped. Bill Pullman’s President Whitmore gave a rousing speech to a bunch of half drunk hicks and massively over-excited patriots in Air Force uniforms and won the day. Chicago – It’s kind of a light week at the Blu-ray and DVD store (do they still have those now that Blockbuster has closed?). As studios prep a lot of major releases for holiday season, a few titles have been released on Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming services this week that we wanted to highlight, including a decent animated flick, a great foreign one, and a bunch of movies that may interest you but that you should probably avoid.
The Attack

“The Attack”
The best new release of the week is this moving foreign film about a man shattered by the realization that his wife may not be who he’s always thought she was. The revelation brings to the surface the man’s own history and the piece becomes a moving meditation on the crisis in the Middle East and how the past and hidden conflicts are always there,...

This week we’re giving away one copy of White House Down on Blu-Ray, courtesy of Sony Pictures.
Though the film was less successful at the box office this past summer than many had predicted (likely due to Olympus Has Fallen covering similar territory earlier in the year), our very own Jonathan Lack awarded it three stars out of five.
In his review, he wrote, “White House Down is not a good film, but I enjoy doubling over with laughter as much as anyone else, and there is always a certain appeal to this sort of polished, over-the-top action lunacy.” His conclusion:
The film has its obvious strengths and failings, with a nice sense of spectacle and disappointing character work, but overall, I find it hard to deny that the sheer mental deficiency of White House Down is practically intoxicating.

Roland Emmerich's explosion-fest is first Hollywood movie to portray cool, young, black president – in form of Jamie Foxx
• Watch the trailer for White House Down
• Read Peter Bradshaw's review
White House Down might not seem the most culturally significant of films. It's the second Die-Hard-in-Washington thriller we've seen this year, following Olympus Has Fallen in April, so you might well argue that its only distinction is to make a Gerard Butler action movie seem plausible in comparison. But wait. Film historians may yet have to include Roland Emmerich's goofy explosion-fest in their footnotes. Starring Channing Tatum as an aspiring secret service agent, and Jamie Foxx as the president he dreams of protecting, it's the first Hollywood blockbuster to put a Barack Obama substitute in the White House.
We've had black presidents in the movies before, of course. Morgan Freeman seemed so well-suited to the job of commander-in-chief...

The last of our three interviews with the White House Down cast and crew ends with the Master of Disaster Roland Emmerich. Emmerich has previously directed the likes of Independence Day, 2013 and The Day After Tomorrow. In this latest movie, we get to see Emmerich based in one place rather than a global scale disaster movie as he takes on destroying some of Washington DC’s best known landmarks.
Using the likes of Channing Tatum as a Secret Service wannabe and Jamie Foxx as President James Sawyer, we see the duo combine in an epic action movie which is set to rial the recent Olympus Has Fallen which had a very familiar storyline. Nonetheless, White House Down is well worth a watch. Roland Emmerich talks about designing their own White House (or a couple to be more precise so they could blow one up), working with the likes of Tatum...

You wait ages for a bus… and then two come along at once. This well-worn adage can also be applied to movies involving America's most famous building being taken over by villains, as White House Down limps into cinemas months after the similarly themed Olympus Has Fallen. Scheduling may make it a largely unwanted new release, but there is enough solid action and sturdy chemistry between the leads Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx to make this a reasonably enjoyable thriller.
Tatum dons the mandatory white vest to play soldier turned cop John Cale. Cale takes his alienated daughter Emily (Joey King, a future star) on a White House tour, after being shunned for a Secret Service job protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) by former college...

It's only been a few months since President Barack Obama was inaugurated for his second term and already some folks are starting to handicap the 2016 presidential race. In the battle between the Democrats and the Republicans, there's no such thing as a clear winner, because the contest never ends.
Until now, that is, because we're about to declare a winner when we reveal which of your favorite movie presidents are Democrats and which are Republicans.
That's right — with the inauguration of President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) in this past weekend's "White House Down," we've taken a look at some of the most popular presidents in film history in order to determine exactly which side of the aisle they fall on. Was Harrison Ford's President James Marshall in "Air Force One" a Democrat or a Republican? What about Kevin Kline's fill-in President Dave Kovic in "Dave"? Or "Idiocracy"'s...

You don't even have to see White House Down to know that its stars, Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, are pretty into each other. The two have been unofficially doing publicity for the movie for months now, starting with their post-Oscars appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which brought us the instant ear worm classic "Channing All Over Your Tatum." It involved Tatum writhing on a piano and shoving everyones' minds into the gutter. It was pretty great. By the time they followed it up with a full-fledged music video last week it was pretty obvious that the chemistry between Capitol cop John Cale (Tatum) and President James Sawyer (Foxx) was going to be one of the main reasons to see White House Down, the new action movie in which terrorists take over 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and only one man can help get the President out alive. It also helps that the...

It's a big-budget female-driven comedy, so that's a plus for women. But their characters are damaged and unlikable, so that's supposedly a minus. They're terrific at their jobs, another win. But their male colleagues don't respect them,...

White House Down
Directed by: Roland Emmerich
Cast: Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Woods, Jason Clarke, Joey King
Running Time: 2 hrs 17 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: June 28, 2013
Plot: A rejected Secret Service applicant (Tatum) touring the White House with his daughter (King) must protect the president (Foxx) from a group of ex-soldiers who have taken over 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Who’S It For? If you’re looking for another movie to leave you gung-ho about defending our nation, White House Down will not be that movie for numerous reasons. While dumb action movies can be an easy crowd-pleaser, this one differs from others for its lack of patriotism in spite of its concept.
Expectations: Director Roland Emmerich might be a cold dude (did you see how carelessly he destroyed planet Earth in 2012?), but he’s always promising for ridiculous spectacle. Maybe the star power of Channing Tatum, who could...

- The Scorecard Review
No, Roland Emmerich doesn’t blow up the White House (again) in his latest patriotic pulse-pounder, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t put a really hurting on America’s presidential palace. After all, the director’s newest film is called White House Down, and it centers on something that seems to have captured Emmerich’s attention back since his opus, Independence Day – namely, what it means to wreak havoc on historical real estate in the middle of national crisis. Instead of focusing on a worldwide catastrophe for his latest actioner, Emmerich has scaled back (well, as much as Emmerich can scale back) and focused his film on a set of coordinated attacks that target the heart of America’s government by infiltrating the White House and going after the president himself. Jamie Foxx leads the cast as President James Sawyer, the leader of the free world (and not exactly President Barack Obama, but...

Director Roland Emmerich has essentially dedicated his career to tongue-in-cheek disaster epics from Independence Day to 2012. Big budgets played for big explosions and big laughs. Most of the time it works as far as base-level entertainment is concerned, but there's no denying the false emotions his films evoke. Where they succeed is in their level of self-awareness. It's a way of making a dumb movie and saying, "Yeah, we know it's dumb. That's the point!" His new film, White House Down, walks the same path, but where the majority of Emmerich's films play to the side of dumb, this one delves straight into stupid and, even worse, boring. John Cale (Channing Tatum) is a Capitol Policeman with an 11-year-old daughter, Emily (Joey King), who's obsessed with politics and current President of the United States, James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Cale's dream is to become a member of the Secret Service, but...

There are a couple of things that set Roland Emmerich's new invasion action-thriller White House Down apart from his previous movies involving alien invaders or giant lizard invaders or even bigger city-destroying natural disasters. Besides being grounded in our own world, he somehow managed to score two of the hottest actors working today, Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, and realized that the two guys would have the kind of on-screen chemistry that creates summer movie magic. Foxx plays President James Sawyer, who is in the middle of some serious attempts to create peace in the Middle East when terrorists break into the White House set on capturing him and getting important nuclear launch codes. With the Secret Service out of the picture, it comes down to a DC police officer...

Staggeringly implausible, cartoonishly comical, Roland Emmerich's "White House Down" is refreshingly dumb.
Refreshing because carefree action absurdity, once the province of the summer cinema, is on the outs. Solemnity – even for caped, flying men in tight-fitting trousers – is in.
But there's an inarguable, senseless pleasure in watching Jamie Foxx, as the president of the United States, kicking a terrorist and shouting: "Get your hands off my Jordans!" Hail to the chief, indeed.
"White House Down" follows Antoine Fuqua's "Olympus Has Fallen," released in March, as the second movie this year to imagine an assault on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The two films are very similarly plotted, but "White House Down" is notably less serious, more content to loosen the strings and acknowledge its own inherent preposterousness.
This becomes particularly crystalized somewhere around the time Foxx's President James Sawyer and his rescuer, Channing Tatum's wannabe secret service agent, are careening...

Roland Emmerich's White House Down marks the Independence Day director's return to summer and it's a surprising step forward for the guy who has already caused more wanton destruction in Washington, D.C. than most of the politicians that work there. It stars Channing Tatum as John Cale, a D.C. police officer trying to get a job on the secret service detail of President James Sawyer, played by Jamie Foxx. Taking a tour of the White House to impress his daughter (Joey King) leads to Cale getting caught in the middle of a terrorist invasion of the White House and he has to single-handedly defend the President from the invaders that want to capture and kill him. You know that scene in sci-fi movies where the protagonist has the revelation that the artificial intelligence or whatever has become self-aware? Well, White House Down is the movie where director—and disaster movie fetishist—Roland Emmerich has become self-aware not only because here he blatantly name checks his own film Independence Day, but because he’s finally made the decision to be completely in on all the ridiculousness. Say what you will, but until now Emmerich’s films have been eagerly filled with dampening comic relief in the midst of utterly serious destruction. Yes, sometimes we got a chuckle out of Will Smith saying “Welcome to Earth” after punching an alien in the face or laughed at John Cusack woefully bumbling around Los Angeles as the world literally crumbles around him, but Emmerich’s direction in those other films never truly included an absurd winking eye towards the camera...

In the first clip from Roland Emmerich’s “White House Down”, Barack Obama — er, I mean, Jamie Foxx — wields a rocket launcher as the President of the United States. Unfortunately for John McClane — er, I mean, Channing Tatum’s character John Cale, Potus also loses the rocket launcher. Hey, he’s really into peace, so you know, allowances must be made when it comes to weapons. Check out your first clip from “White House Down”, the second “Die Hard in the White House” movie in 2013. Roland Emmerich just can’t resist blowing up America’s landmarks. The German director’s latest blow’em up, “White House Down” has Magic Mike teaming up with Django to take on some domestic terrorists bent on bringing America to its knees by taking out the White House. Stupid domestic terrorists. This’ll learn’em to invade the White House! Check out a new extended 4-minute plus trailer for “White Down Down”. Why over 4 minutes long? Because 2 minutes is lame, and 3 minutes is 1 minute short. That’s why, dammit. By the way, I’m totally digging how Tatum’s character seems to have almost no regard for the President’s, you know, President-ness. Talk about bossing around the leader of the free world! Capitol Policeman John Cale has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer. Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news,...

And theater owners want shorter trailers... Good luck! I never would have thought Summer 2013 would make it's way all the way to July and I'd still be without a summer film that had really entertained me. Star Trek Into Darkness was a disappointment and films such as Frances Ha and Before Midnight, while great, are hardly summer blockbusters. Thankfully, hope is on the horizon. This week we have Man of Steel and in less comes Roland Emmerich's White House Down, but can a dumb actioner really end up being the "best" action film of the summerc Tonight a new four minute trailer for Emmerich's latest, starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, has arrived with Tates playing Capitol Policeman John Cale whose just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service, protecting President James Sawyer (Foxx). Roland Emmerich’s return to blockbuster territory this year is shaping up to be one of the best movies of the summer, with Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx leading the charge in White House Down.
The action-blockbuster sees Foxx star as the Us President and Tatum as his protector, and we’ve seen plenty to persuade us that this is going to be a lot of fun. Sony have released a great new featurette for the movie, going behind the scenes on construction of ‘The Beast’, the limo-cum-tank designed to protect the President. The featurette notes that, unlike most films, all they had to go on when designing the vehicle were exterior photos, with the Secret Service naturally keeping quiet on the specifics of the limo. The White House Down crew started with a single headlight, and worked their way up from there.

Roland Emmerich loves to destroy things. Like, cities. Countries. Planets. Dude just has a thing for blowing shit up and letting God sort’em out. Or Gods, in the case of some of his movies. He’s up to his old tricks in “White House Down”, albeit on a smaller scale. Looks like the only things that go kablooey in this movie is the White House and some American landmarks. Frankly, I think ol Roland has a fascination with seeing how much of America he can blow up before his career runs its course. Check out the latest featurette for “White House Down”, focusing on the director’s need for ‘splosions. It’s over 3 minutes long, so yeah, pretty long.
