The Queen has received her first tablet computer for the Royal Collection, but it was not an Apple iPad. The Monarch yesterday visited the Royal Commonwealth Society's headquarters in Central London to receive the Jubilee Time Capsule (Jtc), a digital gift to mark her Diamond Jubilee. Malawian John Samson, 12 - the winner of this year's Rcs Commonwealth Essay Competition Junior Prize - presented the top 60 Jtc entries to the Queen on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. The 'Diamond Collection' catalogues the last 60 years of the Queen's reign using 80,000 stories and memories submitted by more than 37,000 people. The time capsule will now be taken to the Royal Collection, Windsor, where it will be the first artefact on a tablet computer in the collection. The International Film Festival Rotterdam has announced that, as part of its Hidden Histories program, it'll be screening work by Ai Weiwei, "six long films which he refers himself to as 'social documentaries' and four documentary art videos. There is a remarkable difference between Ai's sometimes highly conceptual art videos and his social documentaries. For the latter, he acts — before and behind the camera — as a committed research journalist, persistent to bring injustice in the open." Ai Weiwei was, of course, arrested in Beijing earlier this year, imprisoned for 81 days and released in June, though he's still not allowed to leave Beijing. Hidden Histories will feature new work by other Chinese documentary filmmakers as well, including He Yuan, Yu Guangyi and Xu Tong. The 41st edition of the Iffr runs from January 25 through February 5.

The uniformity of today's digitally colour-graded films can never match the spontaneous look of deteriorating celluloid
The other week I was at the BFI Southbank to see Brian Clemens's sole directorial feature, the hugely enjoyable and inventive Hammer film Captain Kronos – Vampire Hunter, a favoured movie of mine that I'd never before had the chance to see in its natural environment: the big screen. Before the screening started, a representative from the BFI informed the audience that the print had arrived fairly last minute and the quality wasn't all that great; it was an old print, from the original 1974 release and not only had a lot of surface damage and patched together breaks but had also started to rot away, giving much of it a pinkish hue. Well, I wasn't going to get another chance to see this so I "bravely" decided to stick with it and was quite...
