After kicking off the year with Trace’s favorite Hellraiser film, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, we’re taking a hard left turn into camp, politics, and a German take on New York City with Killer Condom.
We’ve previously discussed director Martin Walz‘s film in our editorial series (here) and it was a delight to revisit the sly, subversive tale of prophylactics that bite off men’s dicks. The hero of the tale is gay cop Luigi Mackeroni (Udo Samel), who has a trans ex, a mildly homophobic partner, and a twinky sex worker love interest.
As police captains and politicians dispute the dangers of the penis-munching condoms, Mackeroni must use his considerable <ahem> talent to find Smirnoff, the Russian mad scientist, and the mastermind behind the plan to eliminate Germany…er…New York City’s gay population.

Nearly 200 LGBTQ actors in Germany, including some of the country’s biggest film and TV stars, staged a mass coming-out in a German national newspaper on Friday, in a public appeal for more diversity on stage and screen.
The 185 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender actors — among them Babylon Berlin star Udo Samel, and Karin Hanczewski and Mark Waschke from No. 1 German TV drama Tatort — published a joint manifesto in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung calling for a change in attitudes and more LGBTQ characters in scripts.

Mubi's retrospective "Empowering the Spectator: The Films of Michael Haneke" runs October 17 – December 16, 2019 in the United Kingdom.Alexander (Udo Samel) has his eyes glued to a TV screen when he recounts, halfway through Michael Haneke’s The Seventh Continent, his mother’s last words: “How would it be if we had a monitor instead of a head, where we could see our thoughts?” Released in 1989, The Seventh Continent marked Haneke’s feature film debut, but not the end of a career the Austrian had amassed during the previous fifteen years he’d spent writing and directing TV productions. Take his two-part 1979 television movie Lemmings as a single project, and the twenty-three films Haneke has directed since 1974 are somewhat evenly split: twelve features and eleven TV movies—the last of which, an adaptation of his theatrical staging of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, only came out in 2013. But the relationship...

Killer Condom (1996) Director: Martin Walz Stars: Udo Samel, Peter Lohmeyer, Marc Richter "The rubber that rubs you out!" Killer Condom is a strange beast. Despite every instinct your brain would suggest, it's not your average high-concept horror movie. It's not even typical for a braindead, no-budget Troma film. This is a movie about a psychotic prophylactic where the filmmakers actually tried. I know; it's weird. Probably the most interesting...

Director: Patric Chiha Writer: Patric Chiha Starring: Béatrice Dalle, Isaïe Sultan, Alain Libolt, Raphaël Bouvet, Sylvia Rohrer, Udo Samel, Tatiana Vialle, Bernd Birkhahn, Manuel Marmier, Gisèle Viene, Gloria Pedemonte, Thomas Landbo Nadia (Béatrice Dalle) is a mathematician. The rhythms and patterns of her life appear to be very orderly and precise, like -- ehem -- math. Her high heels clack like a metronome as she goes on the same walk in the park with her 17-year-old nephew, Pierre (Isaie Sultan), day after day after day. The repetition is enough to lull one into a hypnotized state, which could explain why Pierre seems so mesmerized by his aunt. Star-struck is more like it. Pierre worships at the altar of Nadia; to Pierre, she is the epitome of cool. But maybe Nadia is cool because she actually listens to Pierre; she cares what he thinks -- especially when it comes to his fashion advice.

Tilda Swinton likes to make films in between organising flash mobs (google it). She’s comfortable in arty stuff and Hollywood. She’s what you’d call a brilliant actress.
According to director Ulrike Ottinger via her own website, Swinton will be playing the infamous mass murderer Elizabeth Bathory in a movie entitled The Blood Countess. Even more intriguing is Elfriede Jelinek has co-written the script!
The film has also lined up French legend Isabelle Huppert, Udo Kier, Sophie Rois, Udo Samel, Irm Hermann, and Nicholas Ofczarek. A fine European production! Elizabeth Bathory murdered hundreds of young girls believing their virgin blood would keep her young for ever. It didn’t and she spent her remaining years locked in a room in her castle. She became a legend and infamous historical figure!
This looks very promising. Ottinger’s director’s statement on the website gives a glimpse into what sounds...

Another name has been added to the ever growing list of folks who are looking to bathe in the blood of young virgins. I mean who wouldn't want to, right? We feel bad for the poor jackass who has to wash all those damned towels afterward.
Over on director Ulrike Ottinger's website word has come that Tilda Swinton (Constantine, The Chronicles of Narnia) is the latest actress to star as the psychotic Countess Elizabeth (Erzsebeth) Bathory in The Blood Countess (Die Blutgrafin).
Swinton will be joining the previously announced Isabelle Huppert (pictured below with Swinton), Udo Kier (Suspiria), Sophie Rois, Udo Samel, Irm Hermann, and Nicholas Ofczarek.
Synopsis
Impatiently awaiting the arrival of her devoted maid Hermine, the countess Erzsébeth Báthory, also known as La Comtesse Sanglante, a tigress in human disguise, ascends into the open daylight. At breathtaking speed, the two women race through a Vienna of ghoulish beauty.

According to Director Ulrike Ottinger's website, Tilda Swinton (Constantine, The Chronicles of Narnia) will be the latest actress to star as the psychotic (yet lovely) Countess Elizabeth (Erzsebeth) Bathory in The Blood Countess (Die Blutgrafin). She'll star alongside Isabelle Huppert, Udo Kier (Suspiria), Sophie Rois, Udo Samel, Irm Hermann, and Nicholas Ofczarek. You'll find the full synopsis below, alongside a look at Swinton and Huppert meeting the producers at last year's Cannes market. "Impatiently awaiting the arrival of her devoted maid Hermine, the countess Erzsébeth Báthory, also known as La Comtesse Sanglante, a tigress in human disguise, ascends into the open daylight. At breathtaking speed, the two women race through a Vienna of ghoulish beauty. Their entourage: Báthorys nephew Bubi, a vegetarian vampire who refuses to follow family traditions, his therapist, two wacky vampirologists, some members of the duelling fraternity "Vampiria", an all-female music ensemble, and many more. Cologne, Germany -- Beta Cinema found new friends for "Mein Bester Feind," (My Best Enemy), selling the Nazi-era drama directed by Wolfgang Murnberger ("The Bone Man") and starring Moritz Bleibtreu, Georg Friedrich and Udo Samel to Metrodome in the U.K., Erg in China and Hollywood Classic Entertainment for the Czech Republic and Slovakia. All three distributors handled Oscar-winner "The Counterfeiters" (2007) from "Mein Bester Feind" producer Aichholzer.
The film tells the story of the strange friendship between Victor Kaufmann (Bleibtreu) and Rudi Smekal (Friedrich), one the son of a Jewish merchant, the other a working class German who joins the SS. When Kaufmann is rounded up by the Nazis and sent to a concentration camp, Smekal intervenes to save his life but only so Kaufmann can help him in a secret Nazi mission.
Erg also picked up Beta's "Hidden," another World War II drama, directed by Poland's Agnieszka Holland ("Europa,...
