For the second year in a row, the American Film Market will be held online, pivoting away from an in-person marketplace due to travel concerns amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The fully online AFM for 2021 will now be held November 1-5, shifting one day earlier than was previously announced.
“We wish we could welcome the global industry back to Santa Monica but travel regulations, increased concerns about coronavirus variants around the world, and government restrictions on the ground prevent us from moving forward,” Michael Ryan, chairperson, IFTA and partner, Gfm Films, said in a statement. “However, IFTA is thrilled to host the market the industry expects – where no one will be excluded and all of our stakeholders can immerse themselves for five days dedicated to deal making, discovery, education, and reconnecting.”

The 2021 American Film Market will once again go virtual, following the online format of last year’s event that took place in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Independent Film and Television Alliance made the official announcement Thursday, roughly two months after organizers signaled that AFM could return as an in-person event this year. The virtual shift comes as the pandemic still rages on and cases of the delta variant persist around the country.

The American Film Market is moving to an online, virtual format for its 2020 edition, the Independent Film & Television Alliance announced Monday.
The 41st marketplace will also shift back one week on the calendar and take place between November 9-14 as to avoid overlapping with the 2020 U.S. election.
“By making this announcement four months in advance, Afm’s stakeholders can move forward and plan with certainty,” Michael Ryan, chairman, Ifta and partner, Gfm Films, said in a statement. “Afm 2020 Online will give the global film community the opportunities that are always critical to our success — to meet, share knowledge, collaborate, and discover tomorrow’s films as they do every year in Santa Monica.”
The full program and participation details will be unveiled later this summer.

The American Film Market (AFM), one of the key international film events on the calendar, has decided to move online for 2020 in the face of continued coronavirus disruption.
It had started to look inevitable in recent weeks that the market would need to change up this year, with virus spikes in the U.S. and continued disruption to international travel making any physical edition of the event seem increasingly challenging.
Afm typically welcomes some 7,000 industry professionals from more than 70 countries. In the pandemic era, it’s difficult to see how any major global event like that will be able to be hosted physically any time soon. Cannes, one of the other key markets in the calendar, shifted entirely online this year, and Toronto has indicated that its industry program will be online for 2020.

It has been some time since I sat down to watch a good heist movie, so when I received The Mason Brothers and read things like “Inspired by films like The Untouchables and Reservoir Dogs,” well call me an old romantic for those films in particular but that comparison made me give this one a shot for sure.
I’m going to put something right on front street when it comes to this movie. When it says “Inspired by Reservoir Dogs” it Really means inspired by… However as my esteemed podcast co-host said “there are worse movies to be inspired by”.

He’s probably the most consistently popular filmmaker in history, as well as one of the most divisive – and he’s also got two new movies out this Christmas. Steven Spielberg’s patented blend of awed faces, childlike wonder, and daddy issues come roaring back to the big screen for the first time since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with the equine Wwi adventure War Horse and the long-gestating Hergé adaptation The Adventures of Tintin. We scored early looks at both films, and Sos contributor and resident Spielberg superfan Michael Ryan joins us to measure the Spielbergocity.

When CBS originally announced The Good Wife it seemed like a terrible idea. Make a TV series about the wife of a fallen politician? The one forced by circumstances and her own ambition to stand by his side and publicly forgive him? Even when doing so means doubling your public humiliation?
