One of the all-time foundational fixtures in horror is the vampire. That means over a century’s worth of bloodsuckers in film, in various styles and mythology, from across the globe.
As prominent as this movie monster is, with dozens of adaptations of Bram Stoker’s Dracula alone, there’s an overwhelming selection of vampire fare that makes it easy for many worthwhile gems to fall through the cracks. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to underseen vampire horror movies worth seeking out.

At a time when syndicated science fiction was just Star Trek series, it took some guts on Warner Bros’ part to try something darker and more experimental with J. Michael Straczynski’s Babylon 5, designed to tell a sprawling epic that was more political than it was space opera. The show arrived thirty years ago and was successful enough to spawn spin-off five telefilms and a short-lived spinoff, spanning 1993-2007.
The core of it, the 110 episodes from the original five-season series, have been remastered and collected on a nice Blu-ray box set from Warner Home Entertainment. Also included is the original pilot film.
Set in the 23rd century, the Earth Alliance has found its place among star-faring races, notably the Minbari and the Centauri. Some of these races are fine with humans; others wish them gone. Then there are the Vorlons, and no one knows what they want.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge character Jesse has been recreated as a Bull Airs shoe
A couple weeks ago, the shoe company Bull Airs revealed that they had created a shoe that was designed to look like the Blade character from the Puppet Master franchise. (You can take a look at that shoe Here.) Now they have unveiled a new collection of items that are inspired by the Jesse character from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (watch it Here)! This includes the button-up shirt Jesse was wearing during his famous bedroom dance scene, a Freddy-slashed recreation of the hat he wears in the same scene, and… best of all… a shoe that is designed to look like Jesse in that scene, featuring a mixture of his shirt, his jeans, and Freddy’s sweater. Images of the shoe can be seen at the bottom of this article, and more can be found on the Bull Airs website.

It may have taken a long time to get here, but Babylon 5 is finally making the leap to Blu-ray. Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment announced today that all five seasons of the iconic sci-fi series will be released on Blu-ray on December 5th.
Babylon 5 has previously only been available on DVD and the image quality wasn’t always the best, so fans have been waiting for this moment for quite some time. You can check out the official box art for Babylon 5: The Complete Series below, which strangely doesn’t feature the titular space station.
All five seasons of Babylon 5 were scanned and remastered from the original camera negative in 4K, with a colour correction and the cleaning of dirt and scratches as well. The many CGI shots of the series have been digitally upscaled to HD, and short of a complete remaster, that’s probably...

While we keep waiting to hear distribution news for the Blind (watch it Here, read my review at This Link) sequel Pretty Boy, the film’s creative team is continuing to create. Last year, we heard that filming had wrapped on a giallo thriller called That’s a Wrap, the first film from Neon Noir, a production company formed by Blind and Pretty Boy director Marcel Walz, screenwriter Joe Knetter, and star Sarah French. Now production has also wrapped on the second Neon Noir project, a horror film called Garden of Eden!
Directed by Walz from a script by Knetter, Garden of Eden has the following synopsis: The Eden family are devout Christians and do everything they can to live the word of God and set an example of what is right and wrong. They have been very successful in business and are rich beyond their needs. In order to give back,...

Neon Noir, the production company formed by Marcel Walz, Sarah French and Joe Knetter, has wrapped principal photography on their second movie, titled Garden of Eden.
Bloody Disgusting has been told that the film, shot in the LA area, “tackles heavy subject matter that will no doubt lead to some controversy during its planned film festival run.”
Exclusively check out two first-look images plus the poster and expect more soon.
In Garden of Eden, “The Eden family are devout Christians and do everything they can to live the word of God and set an example of what is right and wrong. They have been very successful in business and are rich beyond their needs. In order to give back, the family throws garden parties. Each guest that is lucky enough to find a key gets to have their most wished for dream come true. But a dream for some can be a nightmare for others.

New ‘Neighbours’ As Reprieved Series Prepares Return
The return of long-running Australian soap “Neighbours” will see a new family, the Varga-Murphys, featuring mums, Remi (Naomi Rukavina) and Cara (Sara West) and teenage sons, JJ (Riley Bryant) and Dex (Marley Williams), moving to the iconic Ramsay Street.
West said: “Cara has a bold, impassioned love for her family and I love that her intentions have, so far, always been good. I hope having the Varga-Murphys on telly will help better reflect the beautiful Lgbtqia+ community that I’m proud to be a part of and I can’t wait to share the family with you.”
Rukavina added: “As a stalwart of Australian drama television, the show is on the front foot of showcasing diverse and real representations of Australian families, not in a tokenistic way.”
“Neighbours,” produced by Fremantle, will premiere for free, exclusively on Amazon Freevee in the U.K.

It’s a busy week for horror with The Pope’s Exorcist and Renfield arriving on the big screen. The latter reimagines classic Universal Monsters characters with a comedic twist, though it’s hardly the first to depict bloodsuckers in a humorous way. This week’s streaming picks celebrate vampire horror-comedies, giving you plenty of options to sink your teeth into.
Here’s where to watch these titles this week.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Last editorial, I pondered if the best films in the Amityville Horror franchise are the paired entries. As we cross off the seventh entry, that suspicion holds true. Amityville: A New Generation has decent ambition for a franchise creeping towards double digits; it simply needed a few tweaks in its execution. At the end of the day, the film feels aggressively early 90s direct-to-video horror, slightly better than something like a mid-range Candyman or Hellraiser.
The 1993 film is set in an apartment complex whose residents are an artist collective. The film uses the same formula as The Amityville Curse for its characters (a combination of lovers and friends), as well as It’s About Time and 3-D (a new haunted object). In this case,...

Sleep can literally kill you. That's what makes "A Nightmare on Elm Street" so downright spooky. Upon reading a mind-blowing story about a young Cambodian child, who was terrified to sleep and then died while apparently dreaming, filmmaker Wes Craven conjured up a sleep demon for a screenplay. Freddy Krueger was born out of a real-life wave of similar incidents that swept across America in the 1980s. The 1984 slasher film, produced by New Line's Robert Shaye, saved the company from disaster and put it immovably on the map. It reinvented the slasher genre at a time when the horror subgenre was on its way out. By leaning into the universal human experience of sleep, it brought genuine fear to the surface again.
In the coming years, Freddy Krueger has haunted our dreams across six sequels, a vs. movie with Jason Voorhees, and a 2010 remake, starring Rooney Mara and Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy himself.

A new version of the Emmy-winning space opera television series Babylon 5 is in the works. The CW has put in development Babylon 5, described as a “from-the-ground-up reboot” of the critically acclaimed 1990s series, from original series creator J. Michael Straczynski and Warner Bros. Television.
Written by Straczynski, the reboot revolves around John Sheridan (played by Bruce Boxleitner in the original series), an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, who is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war. His arrival triggers a destiny beyond anything he could have imagined, as an exploratory Earth company accidentally triggers a conflict with a civilization a million years ahead of us, putting Sheridan and the rest of the B5 crew in the line of fire as the last,...

I’m going to be totally honest here and state that I did not see Marcel Walz’s Blind, of which this film – Pretty Boy – is a direct sequel. A direct sequel in early Friday the 13th style, where this film literally continues exactly after the events of the first movie (which are recapped somewhat in the opening titles) and continue what, I have no doubt, will be an extended series of films featuring our creepy masked-faced killer.
Er, “mask faced killer”, does that sound Just like the Friday the 13th franchise to you? I jest but it seems, given how much this film focuses on blood, guts and gore – much mores than the first (apparently) – that Walz’s is very much following that series footsteps...

“Filming Pretty Boy the way we did was a dream comes true for me. It is beautiful, fun, gory and creepy. Seeing our Killer, “Pretty Boy”, slashing through this love letter to the 80s is what I have always wanted to do! Also, as an LGBTQ Director, I could go crazy on set design for the Valentine’s party and overall theme in the movie, so be prepared for a lot of pinks, glitter and some intestines Lol!“

Look, those of you who know me likely already know why I have an affinity for New World Pictures (hint: they’re responsible for a movie I think is really “swellraiser”). But I’ve always wondered what kind of film studio had the gumption to produce a movie at the height of the AIDS crisis that was directed by an openly gay man and revels in kink, incorporates copious amounts of blood, and dares us to indulge in our darker nature? It turns out that for a studio like New World Pictures, this tact was pretty much par for the course. New World’s history is all about taking chances, an approach that would ultimately lead to its downfall.
New World was founded by Roger Corman and his brother Gene in 1970. They distributed their first film, the biker flick Angels Die Hard, in June of that year, but their first...

The opening scene of Jakob’s Wife sets the stage for what’s to come as Reverend Jakob Fedder (Larry Fessenden) sermonizes about the love a husband should have for his wife. His partner Anne (Barbara Crampton) is in the front pew listening, but never smiling. She’s not hearing his words and nodding her head in agreement. She’s actually staring daggers at the reality of what his words mean. Because Jakob never says anything about that love being for her benefit. He never says men should love their wives because they deserve respect or equality or even that very love he believes he provides. No. To love your wife is to “love yourself.” Even in what should be a selfless act, this man (and those listening) thinks only of himself.

Low-budget necessity is often the mother of low-budget invention, but sadly not so much in Travis Stevens’ “Jakob’s Wife,” a thin, half-hearted reworking of the vampire mythos that can’t quite decide if it’s spoofy or serious, and doesn’t have the smarts to be both. While it’s theoretically promising to attempt a hybrid tone in which schlocky effects and spurting necks are offset by genuine psychological insight into the discontented life of a long-married small-town pastor’s wife, in practice, the impulses just cancel each other out, whittling down the movie’s stakes long before they’re plunged into anyone’s chest.
You can see, however, how the project might have attracted its chief draw, who is also ultimately its most underserved asset. Actress Barbara Crampton (who also produces) has been a horror icon since starring in 1985’s beloved cult horror-comedy “Re-Animator” and returned to the big...

"That's odd – you've got new teeth coming in..." Rlje Films has released the first official trailer for an indie horror comedy called Jakob's Wife, the latest from producer-turned-filmmaker Travis Stevens (of Girl on the Third Floor most recently). This new vampire comedy stars horror regular Barbara Crampton as Mrs. Fedder, Jakob's wife. Anne, married to a small-town Minister, feels her life has been shrinking over the past 30 years. Encountering "The Master" brings her a whole new sense of power and an appetite to live bolder. However, the change comes with a heavy body count. The cast also includes Larry Fessenden, Bonnie Aarons, Nyisha Bell, Sarah Lind, Mark Kelly, and Robert Rusler. This is premiering at the SXSW Film Festival this week, then will be available to watch on VOD in April for anyone who wants a taste of this bloody vampire comedy. One of more entertaining bits of indie horror from the last few years is “Blind,” a gloriously melodramatic suspense thriller that veers into slasher from director Marcel Walz and writer Joe Knetter, that slipped in amid all the chaos of the last half of 2020.
“Blind” focused on an actress (Sarah French) putting her life back together after being blinded in a botched laser eye surgery, but the hook was sex obsessed killer wearing a very Ken doll-esque mask called “Pretty Boy” (Jed Rowen). Filming just wrapped on the sequel, the eponymously titled “Pretty Boy,” and in advance of the first trailer you can enjoy some extremely cool first look images below.
First up is the poster which, yeah inject it into our veins please.

“Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil,” a docuseries exploring the singer’s near fatal overdose, will open the 2021 SXSW Film Festival in March, the festival announced Thursday.
Michael D. Ratner directed the YouTube Originals docuseries, which will look at Lovato’s awakenings following her 2018 overdose and her return to music. Ratner was granted unprecedented access to the pop star’s personal and musical journey.

Today came the news that Travis Stevens directed Jakob's Wife wrapped its initial shoot in Canton, Mississippi. This sophomore feature comes hot on the heels of Stevens' debut film, Girl on the Third Floor's arrival on Netflix not too long ago. The director is probably best known as a prolific producer behind the scenes of films like Cheap Thrills, We Are Still Here, A Horrible Way to Die, and Buster's Mal Heart. With Jakob's WIfe he finds himself back in the director's chair with a cast of indie horror all-stars. Not only does the Barbara Crampton take up the lead, but independent horror legend Larry Fessenden shares that spotlight in this upcoming film. A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge was the hit sequel to Wes Craven’s classic original, helping lay the template for the many Elm Street films that followed. But these days, Freddy’s Revenge is primarily known among horror aficionados as a bizarrely homoerotic movie. You can be sure people also noticed back in 1985, too, as it was called “the gayest horror film ever” by gay magazine The Advocate. And now, a new documentary called Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street goes into what actually happened during the pic’s production and how it affected the life of its star Mark Patton.
For those of you who haven’t seen it, the gay ‘subtext’ is pretty much just text. The lead is Jesse, who the film strongly, repeatedly and unsubtly insinuates is a repressed gay man. There’s a scene where he meets his teacher at a leather bar,...

Exclusive: A documentary about the problematic legacy of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge told through the perspective of its then-closeted gay star Mark Patton has been acquired by Virgil Films & Entertainment.
Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street recounts Patton’s difficulties making the 1985 horror sequel, which put him through a range of salacious on-screen ordeals designed to whet the homophobic appetites (conscious or otherwise) of 1980s audiences. Directed by Jack Sholder and written by Scott Chaskin based on Wes Craven’s characters, the film was shot for just a few million dollars but grossed $30 million, extending what would become a half-billion-dollar global franchise.
Critics largely dismissed Freddy’s Revenge, but in the decades since, the film’s unique status as an unintended cultural artifact has made it something of a cult classic. The Advocate has described it as “the gayest horror film ever made.”

It was during the 1980s when Mark Patton was ready to embrace stardom. He had recently worked with the likes of Robert Altman and Cher, and was starring in the highly anticipated sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, as a teenager named Jesse who had to contend with Krueger’s nefarious plans for him. But all of that changed quickly as the sequel was poorly received at the time, and it seemed like Patton’s lifestyle directly clashed with Hollywood’s value system.
Mark disappeared from the limelight, building a new life for himself away from the entertainment industry, but when he returned to appear in the Never Sleep Again documentary, Patton realized that it was time for him to take control of his life and his legacy and has worked tirelessly over the last 8 years as an activist, and has also reclaimed the power of Freddy’s Revenge,...

There are actors that are never really considered great but when lumped in great enough numbers tend to serve as the support group of the more well-known and recognized elite in show business that never really seem to get the kind of attention their more famous counterparts get. An interesting little tidbit about me: years ago, when A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge star Mark Patton had come in to be interviewed for the Never Sleep Again documentary, I was one of the first two reporters to interview him upon his reemergence. I knew at the time it was a big deal, but now after viewing Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, I realize just how monumental that moment was, especially for Patton, who had left Hollywood behind in the mid-’80s, and hadn’t looked back until that very moment when he came in to talk about his involvement in the sequel.
Directed by Roman Chimienti and Tyler Jensen, Scream, Queen! is centered around Mark Patton’s life now, as he makes appearances around the world, as well as what his life and career were like early on until he starred in Freddy’s Revenge,...

Woo Hoo! We’re girl-starved teen nerds, and we’re cooking up our own living sex toy with our home computers! John Hughes turns an infantile idea into one of his not-bad teen angst comedies, as Kelly LeBrock materializes to fulfill their wildest dreams. The idea is of course transformed into a basically benign coming-of age story … with the underlying message that we’d not all mind having Ms. LeBrock reformat our hard drive. It all begins as a bad arrested-development joke, but Hughes’ audaciousness and fine production values make this a nostalgic favorite for folk that miss their (ugh) 1980s memories.

If you can’t get a date… make one! After proving himself the king of heartfelt teen flicks with Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, writer-director John Hughes infused the genre with a hefty dose of whacked-out sci-fi comedy in Weird Science, a film where every teenage boy’s wildest fantasies come to life.
Perennially picked-on high school nerds Gary and Wyatt (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) are sick of their status at the bottom of the social food chain. Using Wyatt’s computer, the two hatch a plan to create their dream woman – and following a massive power surge, that woman unexpectedly appears in the form of Lisa (Kelly LeBrock). Gorgeous, intelligent, and blessed with limitless magic powers, Lisa makes the boys’ dreams come true… but what about...

I recently had a chance to talk with Kourosh Ahari. He’s a very promising young filmmaker that not only appreciates all the facets of good storytelling, but also embraces the technology that would allow him to tell those stories within and outside the realm of known possibilities. That approach has worked pretty well for guys like Spielberg and Cameron, so I relished the opportunity to talk to someone with that same passion at the dawn of their career.
He has already crossed genres with some pretty surreal and powerful stories involving human emotion intersecting with extraordinary circumstances, and now he’s using an innovative new three screen technology in his horror short film The Secret Of 40. Ahari talks with me in this interview about his beginnings, his very impressive body of work thus far, and what may be next for how we watch and enjoy films.

Check out this cool poster for Seed 2 director Marcel Walz’s forthcoming remake of Herschell Gordon Lewis’ Blood Feast, which stars genre veterans Robert Rusler (Nightmare on Elm St. 2), Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Sadie Katz (Wrong Turn 6), and Sophie Monk (The Hills Run Red).
Blood Feast will make its Us debut on June 23rd.
Fuad Ramses (Robert Rusler – A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Vamp, Tales of Halloween) and his family have moved from the United States to France, where they run an American diner. Since business is not going too well, Fuad also works night shifts in a museum of ancient Egyptian culture. During these long, lonely nights he is repeatedly drawn to a statue representing the seductive ancient goddess Ishtar. He becomes more and more allured by the goddess as she speaks to him in visions. Eventually he succumbs to her deadly charms.
