The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has added 215 new international voters to its voting body ahead of the 81st Golden Globe Awards.
The move comes as part of the embattled organization’s continued diversity efforts following the 2021 Los Angeles Times exposé that led to widespread criticism of the HFPA over its demographics and allegations of awards campaign misconduct.
With a voting body that now totals 310, including its current 95 members, the move surpasses its previous pledge to increase the body’s size and diversity. In a demographics breakdown received by TheWrap on Monday, the 310 voters are 25% Latinx, 14% Asian, 10% Black, 9% Middle Eastern and 42% white. At least 17% of the voting body self-identifies as Lgbtqia+, the HFPA said in a release, and it represents a total of 76 countries, including newly added countries like Cameroon, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Serbia and Tanzania.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld a federal district court’s dismissal of a lawsuit brought against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association by Kjersti Flaa and Rosa Gamazo Robbins.
In 2020, the two journalists sued the organization behind the Golden Globes over its membership policies after they were not accepted.
Flaa, a Norwegian journalist based in L.A., filed suit after she was denied admission in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Spanish journalist Gamazo Robbins, who unsuccessfully applied in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019, was later added as a plaintiff. They appealed the ruling after most of the original complaint was dismissed in Nov. 2020.

After the stars-free, non-televised afterthought of an awards show the Hollywood Foreign Press Association put on in January, the Golden Globes are back.
Maybe.
But in what form? And will anybody care?
As the HFPA prepares to announce the nominations for its 80th annual show this Monday morning, the answers to those questions have yet to be determined. But it’s safe to say that all is not hunky-dory with the organization and its annual shindig. True, the HFPA is proceeding with its plans to put on a full-scale Globes show, one that will be televised on NBC just the way it was back in the days before the industry told the group to clean up its act or get lost. But there are still warning signs for the Globes, both from external and internal sources.
The timeline is instructive. Last July, seven months after the Globes handed out awards...

The Golden Globes will have only 199 voters for this year’s awards, 101 short of the target that had been set to expand the voting pool since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was bought by Todd Boehly this year and committed to significant reforms.
The Globes has 96 voting members, fully 18 of whom hold emeritus status as retirees, according to the group’s spokesman. The now for-profit organization also lists 103 international voters from a variety of countries — nonmembers of the HFPA who are allowed to cast ballots in an attempt to make the voting body larger and more diverse. While this roster was announced in September, no additional names have been added for this year’s awards to meet the total that Boehly had sought.
Meanwhile, TheWrap has learned that a veteran member of the group and advocate for reform, Frank Rousseau, was expelled on November 22 after a brief investigation into accusations...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the 88-member nonprofit group that hands out the annual Golden Globes Awards, this month rejected all five applicants for new membership, according to a tally of the May 6 vote obtained by TheWrap.
Moreover, two journalists in the group accused fellow members of “bullying” tactics and an “unjustifiable campaign” against one applicant, Kjersti Flaa, who has represented Norwegian outlets like TV2 and Dagbladet for 12 years, according to internal HFPA documents.
The other rejected applicants all had professional experience that met the HFPA criteria: Raffi Boghosian, a journalist from the United Arab Emirates who worked for Al-Arabiya for eight years; Sabrina Joshi, who has written for the Indian weekly You & I since 2017; Sophia Silva, a four-year veteran of Uruguay’s “El Pais — Sabado Show;” and Christian Thiele, who has worked for the Swiss magazine TV Star for eight years.
