When you think of Mads Mikkelsen, your brain probably locks onto the captivating villains he's played on screen, be it Le Chiffre from "Casino Royale," Hannibal Lecter in "Hannibal," or even Jürgen Voller in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny." What you may not think about is Mikkelsen the dancer.
It's true: after studying at the world-famous ballet academy in Gothenburg, Sweden (aka. the Balettakademien), the Danish actor spent a decade as a professional dancer before getting into acting. He would go on to put his ballet skills to incredible use in the opening fight in "Hannibal" season 2, as well as the memorable drunken dance scene that went viral from director Thomas Vinterberg's Danish dramedy "Another Round." With his physical grace and screen charisma, it was probably inevitable somebody would have the idea to cast Mikkelsen as the protagonist in a post-"John Wick" assassin thriller (of which...

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, Polar is the latest graphic novel adaption in the world of cinema, in particular, to hit Netflix. Starring Mads Mikkelsen as retired assassin Duncan Vizla hunted down by the shady assassin syndicate who once employed his services as a seasoned killer. The result, while enjoyable on occasion with a multitude of outrageous action set pieces is on a whole overabundantly dependable on a repellent colour grading and boorish style with peevish misogyny.
Polar offers a great deal of bloodshed and abstract character yet sadly thinks they’re the highlight of a picture that denies the audience even a minuscule or basic form of personal engagement or depth.

Any movie that begins with a sequence centered on Johnny Knoxville's erect penis can only go up (or down, as the case may be) from there. In the case of director Jonas Akerlund and screenwriter Jayson Rothwell's adaptation of the graphic novel Polar: Came From the Cold by Victor Santos, the narrative and emotional through-lines change by the millisecond. Released by Netflix on Friday, action-thriller “Polar,” a Netflix Original Movie starring Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal”), stands about half-way between Ott comic noir and big multiplex action-thriller.
It opens with an aerial shot creeping over woods towards a mansion somewhere in Chile as a motley squad of assassins moves in for the kill. The target, Michael (Johnny Knoxville), 50-ish, a former hitman himself, is now snorting coke and popping a pill before sex by the pool with babelicious Sindy (Rubu O.Fee).
Cut, after Michael’s dispatch, to Mikkelsen, playing Duncan Vizla, aka the Black Kaiser, the world’s No. 1 assassin, going through a pre-retirement medical checkup with an air of near zen-like calm. It’s as if he’s living in another world. Which is a way he is. As anticipated in the opening scene, in its blood-splattered film title, caricature of the hit squad as unconscionable psychopaths, and camera...

It would be one thing if “Polar” were director Jonas Åkerlund’s satirical send-up of American hyper-stylized, hyper-violent exploitative genre pictures. But it’s not — or at least it arrives a decade too late to register as such. What’s clear is that this abhorrent actioner (an adaptation of Victor Santos’ graphic novel “Polar: Came From the Cold”) about a morally conflicted hitman with a price on his head is vulgar auteurism at its most depraved. It even has the audacity to cloak many of its repugnant sentiments and debauchery in the guise of female empowerment. Gratuitous sex, gruesome torture, copious amounts of gore, and garish imagery populate the picture. Those qualities might be reason enough for some to watch, although a great many others would do well to scroll right past it on their Netflix feeds.

It’s a Mads, Mads world. Netflix has released the trailer for its Mads Mikkelsen-Vanessa Hudgens movie “Polar,” and lots of people who lived by the gun are going to die by the gun.
In the action flick, the world’s top assassin, Duncan Vizla — a.k.a. The Black Kaiser (Mikkelsen) — is settling into retirement when his former employer marks him as a liability to the firm, per the streaming service’s official description. Against his will, he finds himself back in the game going head to head with an army of younger, faster, ruthless killers who will stop at nothing to have him silenced.
Also, Vizla’s pending $8 million pension seems like a pretty good (company) reason to off the hard-to-off dude.

A big screen adaptation of the graphic novel Polar: Came With The Cold is on the way...
Mads Mikkelsen has been cast in Polar, a feature film adaptation of the Dark Horse graphic novel Polar: Came With The Cold by Victor Santos.
According to Variety, Polar will be directed by Jonas Åkerlund, with Jayson Rothwell writing the adaption set in the gritty underworld of political assassins.
In the film, Mikkelsen plays Duncan Vizla, aka the Black Kaiser, aka the world's top assassin. When the Black Kaiser's planned retirement is considered a liability to the firm, he finds himself pitted against the group of younger, faster killers trying to put him down. This all sounds like aging James Bond, which is a perfect fit for an actor who once played Bond villain Le Chiffre in Casino Royale.

Mads Mikkelsen Netflix spy thriller Polar is based on a Dark Horse graphic novel.
Polar arrives on Netflix as one of two action thrillers within a short window to showcase the concept of Mads Mikkelsen fighting off fiends in a snow-filled fury on the axis of the world. However, this particular Mikkelsen blood-in-the-snow effort is actually a comic book movie, adapting the Dark Horse graphic novel, Polar: Came With the Cold, by Victor Santos.
Jonas Åkerlund stepped in to direct Polar, with Jayson Rothwell writing the adaption set in the gritty underworld of political assassins; a John Wick-type tale set against a sub-zero backdrop.

Almost exactly a year ago, we wrote about how 20th Century Fox planned a feature film reboot for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the box office bomb from 2003 that was an adaptation of Alan Moore's well-respected comic book series. We hadn't heard anything about the new version of the film since last year's update, so I assumed the movie just fell into development hell or was abandoned altogether.
But here comes Variety, swooping in to confirm that not only is the movie apparently still happening, but it's closer to life than ever. Producer John Davis still doesn't have a director or cast in place, but he did hire a writer: Jayson Rothwell, the guy behind movies like Malice in Wonderland and the Christmas horror comedy Silent Night. That's not exactly what I'd call great news for those who had high hopes this reboot would be a massive improvement over the original movie,...

With a close eye on the likes of Disney's Alice In Wonderland, Oz The Great And Powerful and Maleficent, Fox is now getting into the big-budget fairy tale game. The studio is putting together a new take on Ali Baba And The 40 Thieves. Jayson Rothwell (Silent Night) has written the screenplay. The original Ali Baba comes from The Thousand And One Nights. It tells of the poor woodcutter who learns the words "Open Sesame" and gains accidental entry to a cave containing the secret stash of a large gang of robbers. The 40 fiends then set off in pursuit of Ali, who has to use his wits to survive. As is often the case with these things, the story in its pure form is often eye-wideningly violent. Fox's version, however, planned as a "four quadrant tentpole", will be "an adventure with strong comedic undertones". So we should probably not expect the boiling oil or the quartering.

Constantin Film and Dark Horse Entertainment have pacted on noir spy revenge tale Polar, adapted from the celebrated Dark Horse Comics graphic novel Polar: Came From The Cold by Victor Santos. The action-thriller follows a master assassin named Black Kaiser who’s forced out of retirement by an assassination attempt by a crew of younger hitmen. Constantin sprung for a script by Jayson Rothwell (Malice In Wonderland, Silent Night) and with Dark Horse are now eyeing directors for a spring 2015 shoot.
The stylized Polar originated as a free “silent” web comic before Dark Horse published it as a graphic novel in 2013, adding dialogue. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer will produce with Jeremy Bolt (Resident Evil) and Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg. Rothwell is repped by Wme.

Following on from his original horror flick The Aggression Scale, which was undoubtedly a hit with a lot of horror fans, director Steven C. Well Silent Night takes the basic theme of that film (and by extension that of the classic Tales From the Crypt story “And All Through the House”), along with one or two of it’s most famous set-pieces and crafts an all-new tale of a killer Santa Claus picking off citizens of a small American town on Christmas Eve – and that’s the plot in a nutshell. Just in time for Halloween! Independent Lit manager, Hollywood Hustler, and all around nice gal Miss Kailey Alexis Marsh has just dropped the annual Blood List!
The Blood List is the top 13 most liked, unproduced dark genre screenplays of the year, released annually on Halloween. This is the 5th anniversary. Over 100 feature film executives vote on their top 3 favorite dark genre (horror, sci-fi, thriller) screenplays of the year. Seventy-seven of them earned votes, with screenplays requiring a minimum of four votes in order to make the final cut. I’m looking forward to reading some of these. Patrol and Family Vacation seem to be scripts that are in my wheelhouse. Coming in at number one is Ink and Bone, Zak Olkewicz’s horror spec script about a writer held hostage by his own creations that Dimension purchased earlier this year according to Deadline. Ever since Norwegian helmers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki) left Legendary's production of Spectral, the hunt has been on to find another director, and finally the studio has someone in its sights.
Variety reports that the studio is now in talks with commercials director Nic Mathieu to take the helm of the supernatural thriller. The script, based on a treatment by Ian Fried and with a most recent script draft by Jayson Rothwell, is being viewed as a potential franchise.
The project is centered on a modern-day, militaristic, and gritty approach to fighting the supernatural. Sources say the pitch, which sold for six figures, has been described as a darker and more serious take on a Ghostbusters-like story, with a plot that revolves around a special ops group formed to bring down evil ghosts that have taken over Manhattan.

Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg directed Kon-Tiki, which was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. As Kon-Tiki was gathering buzz Legendary Pictures scooped up the Norwegian filmmakers for a new English language film called Spectral, but now the duo have decided to leave Legendary Pictures and the film behind.
Why did they leave? Apparently they felt the script needed more work and wanted to take the time to get it right. I guess Legendary had other plans.

The script, based on a treatment by Ian Fried and with a recent draft by Jayson Rothwell, is described as “a supernatural Black Hawk Down.” Legendary thinks Spectral has the potential to become a new franchise, so I imagine they’re eager to get it in theatres.

Exclusive: Legendary Pictures and Norwegian Kon-Tiki helmers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg have parted company on Spectral, a big project they signed on to direct in January with much fanfare. It was their first studio deal, made around the time their pic was creating Oscar buzz for Best Foreign Language film. The duo had been signed to a holding deal with the intention of making this film next. That deal ended, and apparently Legendary wanted to move forward and the helmers felt the script needed more seasoning and a longer development track. The script, based on a treatment by Ian Fried and with a most recent script draft by Jayson Rothwell, is described as a supernatural Black Hawk Down and it is viewed as a potential franchise. The helmers will move on to other projects, and Legendary will look to lock in a new director to get the project to...

Looks like Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are having a great week. First, their film “Kon-Tiki” gets nominated for an Oscar on Thursday for Best Foreign Language Film. Now, they look to capitalize on all of their recent success, signing a seven-figure deal to helm a big Hollywood film. And one that could be the start of a potential franchise. Deadline reports that the pair are signing up to helm "Spectral" for Legendary Pictures (the home to Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, the upcoming "Pacific Rim" and "Man Of Steel" just to give you an idea of the kind of blockbuster we might be talking about here). With a treatment by Ian Fried (Hammer Films brewing Jack The Ripper movie "Gaslight") and a recent draft by Jayson Rothwell ("Silent Night," the recently aborted Snow White movie "Order Of The Seven") "Spectral" is said to be "a supernatural 'Black.

On the day their film "Kon-Tiki" scored an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, Norwegian directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are close to a deal to direct the spooky action thriller "Spectral" for Legendary Pictures.
A potential franchise launcher, the film is described as "a supernatural 'Black Hawk Down'". Roenning and Sandberg shot "Kon-Tiki" for just $15 million, but the film looks considerably more expensive than that which has made them sought after talents.
Ian Fried penned the original treatment which Jayson Rothwell recently re-wrote. Shooting aims to get underway later this year.

Today's a big day for Norwegian helmers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, whose Kon-Tiki was just nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. They are also near a deal to make their Hollywood debut.
Per Deadline, they are signing a seven-figure pact to direct Spectral for Legendary Pictures. The script, based on a treatment by Ian Fried and with a most recent script draft by Jayson Rothwell, is being viewed as a potential franchise.
When we heard of Spectral previously, the description was as follows: Centered on a modern-day, militaristic, and gritty approach to fighting the supernatural, it is a darker and more serious take on a Ghostbusters-like story, with a plot that revolves around a special ops group formed to bring down evil ghosts that have taken over Manhattan.
