TriStar Pictures believed they had the surest of things when they hired Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to make the first Hollywood "Godzilla" flick. The duo had just delivered the biggest film of 1996 in "Independence Day," and appeared poised to become a blockbuster brand name on par with Steven Spielberg and James Cameron. Every studio in town wanted to make their next smash hit. But this is where the trouble started: TriStar wanted Emmerich and Devlin to make its next smash hit.
The 1998 iteration of "Godzilla" did not originate with Emmerich and Devlin. TriStar came very close to greenlighting it in 1994 with Jan De Bont (hot off the success of "Speed") directing a screenplay by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (who would eventually make their franchise fortune on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series), which would've placed it in direct competition with "Independence Day" during the summer of 1996. So this all felt awfully fortuitous.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire premiered on March 29, 2024, as the most recent installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. The movie received mixed reviews from critics and is one of the installments with the lowest score, but fans are amazed as things stand now, and the box office earnings seem to confirm that. The movie surpassed expectations for its opening day and previews, and now that the first weekend is over, it has earned an amazing $194 million, landing the best opening weekend of the year, as well as breaking into the top ten list of highest-grossing movies after just one weekend.
The movie has just started its theatrical run, and to be frank, it is projected to become a box office hit. With the success of the movie, the MonsterVerse franchise also managed to hit past the $2-billion mark, becoming one of the most lucrative franchises in movie history.

Adam Wingard returns to the director’s chair to deliver a second helping of the mother of all monster battles, following his superlative work on 2021’s Godzilla Vs Kong. The fifth film in Warner Bros’ MonsterVerse series, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sees Kong and Godzilla teaming up to take on a new pair of adversaries, but not without punching each other a bit first. Got to give the fans what they want, after all.
The plot picks up a couple of years after the events of the previous film, with Kong now settled into his new home in Hollow Earth and Godzilla taking down Titans on the surface world, in between power naps in the Colosseum. However, when Dr Ilene Andrews’ (Rebecca...

It's been three years since the King of the Monsters and the king of Skull Island graced the silver screen, but the legendary beasts are back in "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." Adam Wingard has returned to the director's chair for another kaiju-filled romp in the MonsterVerse, one that has even more monsters than 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" did. Wingard, it's also worth pointing out, is the first director to helm two movies in this franchise, so we're getting some consistency here. But are we getting anything else after the credits start rolling?
Both "Kong: Skull Island" and "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" had post-credits scenes, so it's reasonable to wonder if "Godzilla x Kong" is going to have one. We're here to address that very question in spoiler-free fashion. So fear not! If you're planning on heading to theaters to see the film on opening weekend, we're not...

Chicago – The key to the rapidly expanding Warner Bros. “Mosterverse” of films, now on its fifth installment, is the enduring pleasure of watching giant creatures laying waste to entire cities. Godzilla and Kong are entirely digital creations, but they have all the personality we need in a movie like this.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
When we last left the big ape, he was learning to adapt to his new habitat in hollow earth, a natural world located deep inside the earth, while Godzilla is back up on the surface battling other titans and occasionally causing some major collateral property damage. But as they say, there is a disturbance in the force. Turns out a mysterious distress signal from an ancient civilization still keeping the peace in a secret settlement in hollow earth is sending those monitors vibrating and giving visions to Jia (Kaylee Hottle), the displaced teen who telepathically communicates with Kong.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire releases in theaters March 29, 2024.
I hold a special place in my heart for Godzilla (2014) by Gareth Edwards, which remains my favorite film of the MonsterVerse saga. Kong: Skull Island has managed to improve the overall opinion over the years, unlike Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which continues to be a major disappointment even after a couple of rewatches. In 2021, Adam Wingard found the ideal balance between the titanic battles, human storylines, and just the right amount of openly absurd fun in Godzilla vs. Kong. Therefore, excitement levels were high for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Former adversaries, Godzilla and Kong must join forces to fight a mysterious common enemy that emerges from the depths of the Hollow Earth. Meanwhile, the human characters focus on exploring the unknown origins of the Titans, in addition to providing small but valuable assistance in the impending battles.

There is a twist with the latest offering from the now-decade-old Monsterverse, a franchise that has featured Kong and Godzilla in their own movies and then in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong battling each other to the death. (These monsters never really die. But you knew that). The twist this time is there an even greater threat for these iconic giant creatures to each other and the world, so instead of being on opposite sides of the ring, they team up against an evil new villain, a batshit-crazy ape on steroids named Skar King, in order to save not just Hollow Earth — where most of the action takes place in a dense rainforest — but just about everyone else.

The heavyweight championship event that was Godzilla vs. Kong ended in a tenuous truce that saw Godzilla holding dominion over Earth while King Kong claimed Hollow Earth. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire introduces a new Titan-sized threat from the depths of Hollow Earth, one so dangerous that Kong and his human allies will need all the help they can get to defeat it. Director Adam Wingard continues the kaiju spectacle with the latest Legendary Monsterverse crossover event, this time injecting an even greater sense of adventure and silliness. It’s the type of epic-sized popcorn movie that unleashes nonstop monster brawls and tongue-in-cheek humor in equal measure.
Since the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla spends his downtime curling up for naptime in Rome’s Colosseum when not snuffing out rogue Titans that emerge. The kaiju king’s activity is closely monitored by Monarch and Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall). Dr.

Let them fight? No. Let Them Be Friends!
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire had me feeling like a little Donato again; sitting on the couch, cradling a bowl of sugary cereal, with my favorite Saturday morning cartoons on TV (like Godzilla: The Series). Will the screenplay win an Academy Award? Hell no. Does director Adam Wingard have an absolute blast staging supersized Titan mayhem? Big time.
Godzilla: Minus One satisfied our cravings for societally introspective and richly commentative kaiju narratives that produce more than citywide destruction. Godzilla x Kong is almost exclusively about everything Toho’s Oscar-winning Godzilla flick is not. The only thing missing from this royally massive rumbler is famed ring announcer Michael Buffer’s “Let’s get ready to rumble!” catchphrase and a ring bell’s ding each time mayhem erupts. That’s the energy Wingard brings — the definition of Friday night popcorn entertainment.

The King of the Monsters is standing taller than ever since he became a surprise Oscar-winner earlier this month, but filmdom’s most famous kaiju isn’t about to let his newfound prestige get the better of him. Anyone worried that Godzilla might pull an Adam McKay and make a sudden pivot towards self-importance will be delighted to find that “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” eagerly strips both of its namesakes of whatever seriousness they might have accrued over the years, even if that means stripping them of their souls along with it.
Don’t be confused by the multiplication suggested by the silent “x” in its title: This goofy-ass, clumsily assembled Saturday morning cartoon of a movie might as well be called “Godzilla Minus Everything,” if only because the more accurate “Godzilla Minus Everything Plus Dan Stevens in a Hawaiian Shirt” wouldn’t fit on a marquee.

Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire picks up a few years after the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, with the two eponymous titans keeping the peace by staying in their separate realms. Godzilla now busies himself protecting humanity from various threats, and napping in Rome’s Colosseum, while Kong jumps and swings around Hollow Earth, tearing apart critters and wistfully hoping to find other enormous apes like himself. Given the film’s title, their teaming up is an inevitability, but Godzilla x Kong takes its sweet time getting there, spending much of its first 90 minutes engaging in pointless, anticlimactic world-building in Hollow Earth and elaborating on the wisecrack-laden and cringe-inducing human drama above.
In Hollow Earth, Kong finally runs into a trio of angry apes nearly his size, along with a pesky young ape who’s trying to prove his toughness, though it’s not exactly the...

Let’s be honest: Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire was never going to be a quiet little indie movie. But even though kaiju carnage is always to be anticipated from Warner Bros’ MonsterVerse movies, there’s still an astonishing amount of gleeful creature-bashing action to be ingested from the sequel’s latest trailer – promising not just a reluctant team-up between Godzilla and Kong, but an unseen ice-spewing baddie ready to give them a frosty reception, an army of aggressive apes, and Dan Stevens doing a proper geezer voice as incoming monster expert Tracker. Glorious stuff. Give it a watch here:
Yes please, to all of that. There’s plenty to take in from this three-minute look at Adam Wingard’s follow-up to his 2021 Godzilla Vs. Kong – and it seems he’s going even further into the knowingly oversized onslaught he keyed into last time. We get gigantic teeth knocked out of gigantic mouths,...

It may be Valentine’s Day, but it’s also a Godzilla kind of day. Earlier today, I shared the news that Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki wants to make a sequel to that Toho production that would feature some “kaiju vs. kaiju” action, and now a new trailer has arrived online for a different Godzilla monster mash, the fifth film in the Legendary Monsterverse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. This film is set to reach theatres on March 29th, and you can watch the new trailer in the embed above.
Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard is back at the helm for Godzilla x Kong, working from a screenplay written by Simon Barrett (You’re Next), Terry Rossio (the Pirates of the Caribbean series), and Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) that follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong...

Don't say that Hollywood never listens to what the fans want. Back in 2021, the marketing for "Godzilla vs Kong" leaned heavily on the idea of the Big Monkey going up against the Big Chonky in an epic kaiju-duel for the ages. And every step of the way, the main takeaway viewers had from the footage mostly amounted to, "Why can't they just be friends?" Well, the team-up we needed most is finally happening and the result is a level of absurdity and indulgence the likes of which we've rarely seen committed to the big screen before.
That's hardly a complaint, mind you.
"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" is set to become the latest installment in a franchise that, incredibly enough, once debuted with one of the moodiest and most grounded creature features in 2014's "Godzilla." Now, we're getting a pink-spiked Godzilla, a King Kong wielding a Thanos gauntlet, and...

The fifth film in the Legendary Monsterverse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was once set to reach theatres and IMAX on March 15th, then it slid back to April 12th before recently being moved back up to March 29th. Hopefully they’ll stick with that date. It seems pretty certain that we’ll be seeing the movie very soon regardless, especially since it just happens to have received its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. FilmRatings.com reports that Godzilla x Kong has officially been rated PG-13 for creature violence and action. Exactly what we’ve been expecting from it.

Martin Campbell's "The Mask of Zorro" is one of the most rousing adventure films of the 1990s, a bracing throwback to old-school Errol Flynn swashbucklers that dazzles with masterfully staged sword fights. Perhaps most importantly, it's powered by an emotionally resonant narrative that raises the stakes sky-high, leading to a breathtaking climax that had audiences cheering all three times I saw the film theatrically.
Antonio Banderas is absolute perfection as Alejandro Murrieta, a rakish outlaw who becomes the unlikely successor to Anthony Hopkins' Don Diego de la Vega, aka Zorro. Murrieta also falls for Catherine Zeta Jones' beautiful and feisty Elena Montero, who does not know that her father, the evil Don Rafael Montero, stole her as an infant from de la Vega and his wife Esperanza (Julieta Rosen).
That Elena does not know her true lineage winds up being the heartfelt counterpart to the film's rollicking action. Indeed,...

Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse hit the ground running after launching in 2014 with Gareth Emery’s “Godzilla.” After quickly rolling out “Kong: Skull Island” and a “Godzilla” sequel, the cinematic universe wasted little time before unveiling the main event fans were waiting for: 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong.” And while the sprawling franchise has since expanded into TV with the Netflix anime “Skull Island” and the Apple TV+ drama “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” the adventures of King Kong and Godzilla are still the main attraction.
The two iconic monsters are set to share the big screen again in “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” The film, which hits theaters in April 2024 and released its first trailer on December 3, sees King Kong and Godzilla putting their differences aside to take on a mysterious external threat to existence as they know it.

Two iconic movie monsters have joined forces in the latest installment of Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse in the new trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
In the foreboding clip, a seismometer measures big disturbances in the ground. “For most of civilization we believed that life could only exist on the surface of our planet,” an ominous voiceover says as the Earth is seen buckling by the pyramids. “What else were we wrong about?” While Kong emerges from the ground and later Godzilla, a new empire is introduced, and the pair is seen running together.

Fantasy is a genre that is often hard done by the awards groups, particularly the academy. Occasionally, the odd masterpiece such as Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, will break their barrier but, in general, the genre doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Even “Harry Potter” failed to earn an Oscar win and was never nominated in any above-the-line category.
However, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” is poised to be the next fantastical film that makes the academy’s voters sit up and take notice. Part romance, part ghost story, the film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s 1987 novel “Strangers.” The story follows Andrew Scott‘s Adam as a writer struggling with his latest project who forms a relationship with Paul Mescal‘s Harry. As their relationship progresses, Adam finds himself drawn to his past and visits his hometown only...

“The Recruit” producer P3 Media has scored a seven-figure investment from Ready Entertainment, a company led by Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice A. King, and Ashley Bell.
Founded by journalist Adam Ciralsky (the inspiration for Netflix’s hit Noah Centineo-led spy thriller “The Recruit”), P3 is expanding its lineup with upcoming feature doc “The Return.” That title, produced alongside Ciralsky’s P3 partner Gene Klein, centers on the White House’s efforts to free Americans held hostage abroad. “With unprecedented access, the film chronicles high stakes and unconventional efforts to free Eyvin Hernandez, an L.A. County public defender who has been held in Venezuela since March 2022,” per P3.
“This is an extraordinary film about a remarkable individual who has been held in a foreign prison for the crime of being an American,” said King, who along with Bell will join Ciralsky and Klein as an executive producer on the film.

We might be in the era of The Brand Movie, but the 1990s were a heyday for branded video games and some of the most unlikely people wound up with a game of their own. There's "Chex Mix: Chex Quest," Shelley Duvall's It's A Bird's Life," 7up's "Spot Goes to Hollywood," "Make My Video: Marky Mark And The Funky Bunch," and of course, "Pepsiman." Most of these games are terrible at best and unplayable at worst, but there's a certain charm to playing something so clearly intended to make a quick buck off of name recognition. But then there's "Steven Spielberg's Director's Chair," a game that for all intents and purposes was made with the goal of inspiring the next generation of filmmakers by meeting them halfway and educating them through a medium they were already enjoying.

Disney's most successful, new franchise over the last 20 years is far and away "Pirates of the Caribbean." Yes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is bigger, but that was only made possible through an acquisition after the enterprise was already off to the races. In this case, this was a movie based on a Disney attraction that proved to be a gigantic hit, spawning a multi-billion-dollar series. Naturally, the Mouse House has tried to emulate that success ever since, but nothing has even come close. Beyond that, you could argue that every other attempt has actually been a sizable misfire. That streak looks to continue as Disney's new "Haunted Mansion" (read our review here) is in for a rough weekend.

Turning Disney theme park attractions is a relatively new-ish concept, but the movies based on Disney attractions vary wildly in quality.
The story goes that Dick Cook, who at the time was running the Disney film studio with Nina Jacobson, had originally come up with the idea to “mine the theme parks for movie ideas” (as James B. Stewart put it in “Disney War”). They had made “The Country Bears” and were working on projects based on classic Disney attractions Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion. At the time, Pirates was envisioned as a direct-to-video cheapie, more along the lines of “Tower of Terror,” which debuted as an inexpensive TV on “The Wonderful World of Disney.”
But during a meeting about whether Disney should invest in “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” an expensive Peter Weir movie starring Russell Crowe (they declined), the idea was...

Ten years ago, Disney’s “The Lone Ranger” galloped into theaters everywhere.
An updated and deconstructed version of the character known primarily for his black mask and white horse (named Silver), the movie was a big-budget, high-concept adventure film from the same team behind Disney’s lucrative “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise – director Gore Verbinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and star Johnny Depp, who would star as Tonto.
The last time the character had graced the big screen was in 1981 with “The Legend of the Lone Ranger,” a project that went through a similarly troubled production and suffered similar critical and commercial indifference.. But Disney had hoped that the combination of the “Pirates” veterans and the more modern take on the material (with the story told from Tonto’s point-of-view) would be enough to lure contemporary audiences to the Western.
But, of course, that didn’t happen. The movie didn’t...
