Retired actor Daniel Day-Lewis made a surprise appearance at Thursday night’s National Board of Review Awards gala to honor Martin Scorsese with the best director award.
Scorsese and Day-Lewis previously worked together on 1993’s “The Age of Innocence” and 2002’s “Gangs of New York,” but if it were up to Scorsese that wouldn’t be their last collaboration. The legendary filmmaker teased that “maybe there’s time for one more” film together during his acceptance speech.
“Thank you, Daniel. To receive this honor presented by Daniel is just an honor in itself,” Scorsese said to the crowd at Manhattan’s 42 Cipriani. “We did two films together and it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life, I must say. Maybe there’s time for one more. Maybe! He’s the best.”
Day-Lewis, who retired from acting in 2017, called working with Scorsese “one of the greatest joys” of his life.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is a masterclass in action cinema. Despite being nearly three hours long, the action extravaganza maintains momentum by letting the audience breathe between intense set pieces as we follow Keanu Reeves’ John Wick fighting for survival yet again. But it is the French-set action set pieces that electrify the last third of the movie in incredible ways, and were my focus of conversation with stunt coordinator and second-unit director Scott Rogers.
With the film earning much-deserved acclaim in year-end consideration, I caught up with Rogers to discuss what his role is in layman’s terms, how they shot the Arc de Triomphe sequence, the experience of working with Keanu Reeves, and whether he sees a future in directing.
The Film Stage: How are you today?
Scott Rogers: I’m great. How are you?
I can’t complain. I got to watch John Wick 4 again last night.

The "John Wick" movies are a masterclass in worldbuilding, expanding the scope of the story and fleshing out the world the characters live in without forcing an expanded universe from the get-go. Each film introduces new ludicrous elements of this heightened world of international assassins, yet it never breaks verisimilitude.
Likewise, by expanding the world, the "John Wick" movies also expanded its borders, showing new and exciting locations and exploiting their possibilities for kick-ass action set pieces — like ancient Roman ruins, a subway station in New York, and the Arc de Triomphe. Each new location offers a unique opportunity for a new way of John Wick to shoot and stab his way through a mob.

The John Wick franchise has done a masterful job from the fine folks at 87eleven Action Design. The fight sequences are always sublime. As are the car chases. And John Wick: Chapter 4 features one of the most memorable ones on the streets of Paris. The scene is an absolutely thrilling moment to watch play out. Whether on the silver screen or the small. And yet, one can only imagine what it would be like to get behind the wheel and do the stunts yourself. And this past Sunday, JoBlo had the opportunity to do just that.

I don't envy the editor of "John Wick: Chapter 4." Director Chad Stahelski basically used Lionsgate's money to shoot wildly extravagant action and combat sequences that went beyond anything in the previous "John Wick" movies — which, considering the action movie majesty of the "John Wick" franchise, is saying something.
Remember that club fight sequence in "Chapter 4," where Keanu Reeves' assassin faces off against stunt legend Scott Adkins in a fat suit? According to the film's stunt coordinators Stephen Dunlevy and Scott Rogers, it was actually the most challenging scene to film and believe it or not, was initially twice as long as what you see in the final movie. Then there's that entire third act that's basically one long action montage, as Baba Yaga fights his way across Paris toward his final showdown with Bill Skarsgård's Marquis Vincent de Gramont. John Wick just wanted to retire and live a happy, peaceful life with his Beagle puppy, but instead he's been kicking butts and taking names for nearly a decade since "John Wick" premiered in theaters in 2014. "John Wick: Chapter 4" is the culmination of everything the franchise has attempted and achieved so far. It shows how you properly build an expansive universe and it introduces incredible new side characters all while, of course, having bombastic action that should (and does) shame the entire American action movie industry.
Despite the movie being almost three hours long, it flies by, in no small part due to the nonstop action that feels like a Greek myth brought to life. This is particularly true of the film's last hour, which is a spectacular action scene filled with moments that rival "Mad Max: Fury Road" in terms of how unbelievable it is that no one died making those scenes.
And yet, there can be too much of a good thing, at least if you ask Keanu Reeves himself. Speaking to Variety, the actor pondered the question of whether the team had...

The following post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."
This was my dad's favorite story: One morning, when I was four years old, a jingling chain and a loud thump woke me. I crept downstairs to investigate and found my dad -- drenched in sweat -- punching a leather hanging bag. Without hesitating, I said, "I want to do that, too." Although it surprised him, he replied, "Alrighty, kiddo." He enrolled me in karate that week. Soon, martial arts became our thing. On Saturdays, we attended regional tournaments in crowded gyms. I competed in sparring, and my dad refereed. Before and after matches, we'd spend hours debating scores, questioning techniques, and musing on the dangers of executing flashy movements amidst incoming kicks.
For over two decades, I've studied martial arts both to honor my dad's memory and because my bones can't remember a time before I did. As a result,...

Keanu Reeves is playing the strong and silent type in John Wick: Chapter 4, with only 380 words of dialogue in the whole three-hour movie.
The fourth instalment of the action thriller franchise, which is 169 minutes long, sees Reeves speak very few lines of dialogue, almost a third of which consists of just one word, such as “yeah”.
John Wick: Chapter 4 was analysed by The Wall Street Journal, which reported that “about 10 per cent of [Wick’s lines] are featured in the movie’s trailer, which makes the hero seem almost chatty”.
Wick reportedly says more in that 2.5 minute clip than he does in the first 25 minutes of the film.
Director Chad Stahelski explained that Wick, a legendary hitman in the criminal underworld, has very few lines because Reeves “stripped out roughly half the dialogue written for his character in the initial script”.

When director Chad Stahelski began work on the fourth “John Wick” movie, his ambition was to create an action epic in the mode of Sergio Leone’s “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” That meant that by the time the film got to its climactic set piece — a spectacular chase scene involving muscle cars racing around the Arc de Triomphe — that set piece had to live up to every previous action sequence in the franchise.
Second unit director and stunt coordinator Scott Rogers, who was responsible for all the car material in “John Wick: Chapter Four,” had a simple guiding principle to motivate the complicated choreography: “It’s what’s happening in the car that makes what’s happening outside of the car interesting,” he told IndieWire.

For what could very well be the final major set piece in the mainline "John Wick" series (spinoffs are coming), it makes sense that director Chad Stahelski and his incredible team of stunt performers would want to create the biggest, loudest scene they could. The climax ends up being a triptych of a sequence that takes place at three different locations: the Arc de Triomphe, an abandoned house of some kind, and finally the massive staircase leading to Sacré-Cœr. Some, including myself, would say it's a bit too much action, but there are unquestionably moments within this nearly 40 minute stretch that I marveled at.
Mostly, this occurred on the staircase, with dozens of assassins attempting to take down Keanu Reeves' titular hero before reaching the top for his duel with the Marquis de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård). Where it differs from the...

There is nothing that John Wick (Keanu Reeves) cannot accomplish. Over the course of the first three "John Wick" films, the legendary assassin has gone from brutally avenging his dead dog to aggressively taking down increasingly dangerous adversaries sent after him for defying the rules of the world he inhabits. As expected, the stakes are grander than ever in Chad Stahelski's latest installment in the franchise, "John Wick: Chapter 4." As a marked man, excommunicated from the assassin underworld, John has evolved into a symbol of unchecked defiance -- much to the ire of the High Table.
In "Chapter 4," John has to contend with various threats, including a formidable old friend, a whole slew of assassins, and the annoyingly smug Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård). However, John's greatest enemies in "John Wick: Chapter 4" are sleek as hell, impossibly fast-moving,...

In the rather extended, multi-armed climax of Chad Stahelski's latest entry in the greatest modern action franchise, "John Wick: Chapter 4," the title character (Keanu Reeves) finds himself dodging a literal army of assassins in the streets of Paris. John Wick is on his way to a climactic duel, but has to spend nearly 40 straight minutes of the film (not an exaggeration) getting past hundreds of murderous thugs before he can get there. A portion of his fight takes Mr. Wick to the traffic circle around the Arc de Triomphe, where he takes control of first a car, then a motorcycle, firing bullets into every adversary that wanders into his field of vision. During this deadly kerfuffle, John Wick is hit by numerous cars, bounces off of windshields, flips onto hoods, and generally suffers all manner of vehicular trauma. Because he is John Wick,...

“John Wick: Chapter 4” director Chad Stahelski is taking aim at the Academy Awards.
Stahelski, who helms the critically acclaimed “John Wick” franchise, addressed the debate of stunt work being included in Oscar categories by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. In fact, Stahelski argued that the Academy has never even “considered” recognizing stunts.
“What makes you think they’ve ever really considered it? Have you ever talked to anyone in the Academy about it, or talked to anyone in the stunt world who has talked to the Academy about this?” Stahelski told Deadline. “So you see the fundamental problem here. I think if I went to the Academy right now and asked, ‘Are there any of you who think stunts shouldn’t be in the Oscars? Could you find a single person?’ I don’t think so. So, Ok. "John Wick: Chapter 4" is an action movie spectacle. The same could be said of the three previous films in the franchise but, this time around, director Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves pulled precisely no punches. For most of the movie's nearly three-hour runtime, it's insane action sequence after insane action sequence, with only mere moments left for the audience to catch its breath. But what was the hardest scene to film? Logistically, the club sequence featuring B-movie superstar Scott Adkins was a true challenge.

To say there are a lot of impressive action sequences and set pieces in "John Wick: Chapter 4" is an understatement. The movie, especially the last hour, is a non-stop assault on your senses as you follow Keanu Reeves' John Wick as he falls out of buildings, gets hit by cars, and falls down way too many flights of stairs.
That stair sequence, it turns out, impressed the stunt coordinators on the film as well. "It was one of the most impressive days of a performer I've ever seen in my 32-year career," Scott Rogers told me when I interview him and his fellow stunt coordinator, Stephen Dunlevy, about their work on "Wick." That long, long fall is one take, and one that "Wick" stunt double Vincent Bouillon did an impressive four times.

The similarities between John Wick and Jesus Christ likely start and finish with silky locks and an uncanny ability to cheat death. That’s never stopped filmmaker Chad Stahelski from shovelling religious imagery into this franchise, though. It’s always as if the Rapture itself is right around the corner. Back, alive, after an unfortunate tumble off a New York City rooftop at the end of 2019’s Chapter 3, Keanu Reeves’s indomitable assassin now stalks the aisles of saintly cathedrals. He crosses pistols with a blood brother named Caine (Donnie Yen), whose name echoes the biblical kinsman tarred by murder. And, most arrestingly, he opens the film hurling several ferocious punches, which hit their target with the sonorous quality of church bells summoning the faithful.

Actor Keanu Reeves worked with many iconic movie props over the course of his career. He had many ups and downs, but ultimately stuck with audiences and showed why he’s had so many highs. Reeves never stole anything from a set he’s worked on, although there are some props that he was able to keep with him. The action star certainly has his share of favorites from the collection.

Reeves isn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty when it comes to stunt work. He worked with talented stunt coordinators, such as Scott Rogers, across his career, putting his trust in making sure that he remains safe while still making him look good on the silver screen. The Matrix and John Wick are a couple of his most legendary franchises, although they used different fighting skills.

The John Wick franchise allows the action set pieces to be the star, empowering long takes that allow the audience to take in its sheer brutality. Each installment pushes further down on the pedal, and each time we think that it’s to the metal, we’re proven it actually goes further. John Wick: Chapter 4 once again exceeds expectations, delivering seemingly impossible levels of adrenaline-pumping action that must be seen to be believed.

The delight of the John Wick franchise lies squarely in its weirdness. The film series famously kicked off with mercenary protagonist and certified wife guy John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, avenging his dog. But as John’s thirst for vengeance dwindled, the screenwriters decided to surround him with bloodthirsty weirdos rather than kill more of his loved ones. Even better, the films are aware of their own strangeness, lending a campy joy to even the dourest deeds.
The franchise is at its bizarre best in “John Wick 4,” written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch and directed, as always, by former stuntman Chad Stahelski. The wild world of assassins is more esoteric, the cinematography and choreography more stunning. Though the film stretches to an audacious 169 minutes — just under three hours — if you surrender yourself to the gorgeous silliness of the Wickiverse, it goes by in a fist-flying flash.

Donnie Yen didn’t want to perpetuate “generic”-sounding stereotypes onscreen.
The star of “John Wick: Chapter 4” revealed that he asked director Chad Stahelski to change his character’s name to a more “normal” moniker of Caine.
“The name was Shang or Chang,” Yen told GQ. “Why does he always have to be called Shang or Chang? Why can’t he have a normal name? Why do you have to be so generic?”
And the suggested changes didn’t just stop at the character’s name: Yen asked the “John Wick” team to reimagine his role on a sartorial level.
“Then the wardrobe again — oh, mandarin collars. Why is everything so generic? This is a ‘John Wick’ movie. Everybody’s supposed to be cool and fashionable,” Yen said. “Why can’t he look cool and fashionable?”
With Stahelski’s approval, Yen turned his character Caine into an homage of Bruce Lee.

Welcome back, Mr. Wick. The John Wick franchise is an interesting one. All the movies in a franchise that has spanned nearly a decade have taken place within weeks of each other. This places an amount of expectations and pressure on the lead, Keanu Reeves, to not change in any extreme fashion and still be able to keep up with the physicality. According to GamesRadar, Keanu found this to be the hardest and most physically demanding role he’s ever had due to the sheer volume of action in this one.
“John Wick: Chapter 4 has the most action of any of the [John Wick] films, which is saying a lot. And it’s more by a good margin. It’s a big show,” the Bill & Ted actor told TotalFilm. “John Wick: Chapter 4 was the hardest physical role I’ve ever had in my career so far. They really trained...

In "The Matrix," after having the martial art uploaded directly into his character's brain, Keanu Reeves famously uttered the line, "I know kung fu." As John Wick, Reeves has also shown off his skills in the arena of "gun-fu," which puts Japanese and Brazilian jiu-jitsu into a blender with standing judo and "tactical 3-gun," as director Chad Stahelski has described it. "John Wick: Chapter 2" took things further by having Reeves show off his "car-fu" skills, and it sounds like he'll be back in the driver's seat — literally — for the upcoming "John Wick: Chapter 4."
Car-fu is exactly what it sounds like: the use of a car as a deadly weapon. One of the "John Wick: Chapter 2" Blu-ray special features was a segment called "Car Fu Ride Along," which showed how Reeves got behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang Mach 1 to perfect his driving so that action scenes could be built around it.

“Uncharted” is upon us.
The video game adaptation, which just had an impressive debut weekend (with Sony brass already describing the film as “a new hit movie franchise”), stars Tom Holland as adventurer Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his older mentor/fellow adventurer Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Together, they are hunting for hidden treasure and lost pirate ships – you know, the usual. The movie is filled with oversized action set pieces, and the biggest, most memorable scene of the bunch involves Holland’s Drake getting ejected from an airplane and jumping from one netted cargo container to the next, all of them still tethered to the plane and blowing in the wind.
It’s a moment that captures the movie’s roots (the film is based on a series of successful video games published by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation system of consoles) while also offering a thrilling, cinematic centerpiece all of its own.

The latest race for a seat on SAG-AFTRA’s national board has been decided by the narrowest possible margin: In Colorado, Nancy Flanagan has defeated longtime incumbent Sheila Ivy Traister by a single vote, 71-70.
Traister has served on the national board since 2012, and her defeat is something of a setback for the union’s ruling Unite for Strength party, which had backed her. Flanagan, an independent who didn’t have the official backing of either of the union’s factions, said in her campaign statement that she “would be a fresh voice” in the board room. But Ufs, even though they backed her rival, says they consider her an “ally,” and that her tweets and retweets of messages of support for Ufs candidates and positions show that she is.
Only 143 of the Colorado local’s 600 eligible members cast ballots, meaning that 457 members didn’t vote.

Every line in the poster above is correct about the film Midnight Special. It’s gripping, emotional and imaginative.

It’s an engaging and entertaining story and so far, one the best films this year.

On the back of buzzy premieres in Berlinale and most recently SXSW, Jeff Nichols has earned acclaim for his fourth film, which marks his first collaboration with a major studio and makes its way into Us cinemas on Friday through Warner Bros.
Nichols regular Michael Shannon stars alongside Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Sam Shepard and newcomer Jaeden Lieberher in Midnight Special, which retains the film-maker’s signature ‘slow-burn tension build’ and ups the ante. His latest film is a sci-fi thriller with car chases, special effects, low-lit cinematography, and a powerful story of a father’s love for his son.
Back in his hometown of Austin, Texas, for SXSW, Nichols spoke to Tiffany Pritchard about the transition from indie to mainstream, and why that matters not when it comes to telling stories and touching the hearts of audiences.
Many are likening Midnight Special to Take Shelter, both in its underlying supernatural elements and its focus...

Giovanni Gopradi is a public speech fearing law student turned commited actor. In just two years he acted in 30 different films which required over a hundred casting calls. He's already built up an impressively diverse body of work, from playing in shorts and personal films to taking on Hollywood slapstick like Paul Blart Mall Cop 2. I got the chance to discuss his approach to acting, and his rapidly growing, diverse resume. Check it out!
Q. You seem to transition a lot from light hearted comedies/dramas to very serious roles. Can that be a jarring transition? Or do you take it quite naturally?
I correlate it to like, a normal event that happens in everyones life. When you goto a party the mindset is that you’re joking around and having a good time, and when there’s a death in the family that mindset changes. And it really depends...

This weekend, an erotic bestseller-turned-blockbuster-movie, "Fifty Shades Of Grey," hits cinemas everywhere. The film required a certain willingness on the parts of Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan to submit themselves physically and emotionally to a movie that's very much about trust and power in the bedroom. The making of the movie has already spurred chatter about on-set battles and a frosty relationship between the two leads, and the perfectly timed "The Dramatics (A Comedy)" uses that kind of behind-the-scenes insight to tell a unique story. Directed by Scott Rodgers, and starring Pablo Schreiber, Sean Astin, Kat Foster, and Riki Lindhom, the tale revolves around an out-of-work actress who gets the starring role in a sexually explicit mini-series based on an erotic bestseller (sound familiar?). But her supportive boyfriend has his patience tried when her Oscar-winning co-lead takes the rehearsal process too far. As you'll see in this clip, boyfriend...
