Thirty years after the deadly standoff between federal law enforcement and the Branch Davidian sect in Waco, Texas, even the most fundamental facts of the tragedy remain contested. Both sides insist the other initiated the initial volley of gunfire that killed four agents and six sectarians. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms insists David Koresh and his followers later set fire to their compound, killing another 48 adults and 28 children in an act of mass suicide. The surviving Branch Davidians maintain that the FBI was the aggressor, and the deadly fire resulted from the Atf’s decision to deploy stun grenades and tear gas.
The decades since have created only tighter knots of recrimination. But you might not get that impression from watching “Waco,” the 2018 Paramount Network miniseries about the nearly eight-week standoff and that fatal inferno. In the hands of brothers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle, who wrote...

Before Michael Shannon returns as villain, General Zod, in The Flash, he makes a return to deal with the embolden domestic terrorists in the follow-up show to Showtime’s six-part mini-series, Waco. The new chapters in the story follow the events in the wake of the siege at Mount Carmel. The focus centers around the trials of the surviving members of the Branch Davidians and anger from the public who felt the feds had gone a little too far. Collider has the report on the new trailer that’s been released days after the teaser on the new series.
Set to a cover of “Losing My Religion,” the footage kicks off with Noesner explaining how Waco has only united civil war-minded domestic terrorists and other individuals who lack faith in the American government and justice system. The result is a rise in further incidents and more animosity toward the FBI in particular.

CBS is using a different approach to unveiling its winter scheduling plans this year — by genre. After announcing its midseason unscripted slate yesterday, the network today is focusing on comedy.
Coming off the schedule in January/February are freshmen Murphy Brown and Happy Together; coming on are new comedy Fam and returning Man With a Plan.
CBS so far has given a Back 9 pickup for a full-season order to one new fall comedy, The Neighborhood. Like all current broadcast sitcom reboots, Murphy Brown was designed for a limited run and will wrap its freshman run with 13 episodes though its ratings delivery has been somewhat disappointing.
For Happy Together, starring Damon Wayans Jr., CBS has opted not to order additional episodes beyond the original 13. Per CBS’ standard Mo the past few years, the comedy is not canceled and will remain in contention for next season.

CBS announced its winter premiere dates on Wednesday, freshman comedy “Happy Together” receiving orders for more episodes.
“Murphy Brown” will also not be getting additional episodes, but the sitcom revival was always intended to be a 13 episode run. Still, “Murphy Brown” did not open as well in the ratings as other recent sitcom revivals like “Roseanne” (now “The Conners) and “Will & Grace.” The show debuted to a 1.1 rating in adults 18-49 and 7.5 million viewers back in September in Live+Same Day. In Live+7, the series is averaging a 1.4 rating and 9.1 million viewers to date. There are also higher costs associated with the show, in part due to the fact that it shoots in New York rather than Los Angeles. There is still a chance the show could get renewed, but as for now it’s chances seem slim.

If you were to unleash a naughty, baroque prankster like Brian De Palma onto the grimly joyless adulterous goings-on of “The Loft,” you might wind up with the kind of delicious trash this thriller so wants to be. Filmed in blue-steel noir-in-color and featuring performances in which everyone’s either mumbling or screaming, however, this silly chamber piece about sex and murder elicits only yawns, interrupted by the occasional unintentional giggle.
A remake of a 2008 Belgian film, this movie does occasionally have that awkward feel of something that’s been translated from one language into Esperanto and then finally into English.

Earth Below Us: Plotnick’s Debut a Sweet Space Soap Opera
Those familiar with the comedic genius of Jack Plotnick should be thrilled to see his directorial debut, Space Station 76, based on a stage play he co-wrote. Bearing his particular brand of subversive, offbeat humor, it’s a space set soap opera made as if it were in the 1970’s and meant as an homage to those classic films from the time period that inventively attempted to visually prophesize the space age. Regularly featured in the films of Quentin Dupieux and television series, ‘Reno 911,” Plotnick’s perhaps best known for the sorely underrated spoof, Girls Will Be Girls, so many may be surprised at the sometimes melancholy tone underlying this film’s more capricious moments. More of a space age melodrama reflecting nostalgia for a bygone era of storytelling in its mixture of vintage and modern tone, it’s as sweet,...

Liv Tyler and Matt Bomer are space pioneers with major personal problems in the trailer for Space Station 76.
The quirky dark comedy envisions an alternate history of space travel in the vein of a cheesy 1970s television show, with Patrick Wilson as the troubled captain of an intergalactic ship.
The crew of this space station find themselves more concerned with their fractured interpersonal relationships than with their mission.
Annoying robots make their presence known as well, only seeming to make matters worse.
Jack Plotnick - the actor known for playing the deputy mayor in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a Red John suspect in The Mentalist - has directed Space Station 76, in addition to working on the screenplay with a team of writers.
The ensemble cast includes Jerry O'Connell, Kali Rocha and Marisa Coughlan. Space Station 76 opens later this year.

The retro-kitsch appeal inherent to “Space Station 76” is palpable from its star-gazing opening credits, rendered as they are in Gill Sans font (think “2001: A Space Odyssey”) with state-of-the-art CGI effects modeled on the miniature work of yesteryear. What follows is a sci-fi soap opera seemingly borne from the 1970s and only now seeing a release, and for a good while, that novelty alone seems strong enough to carry the film. The titular spacecraft is helmed by Glenn (Patrick Wilson), a brash captain who’d rather be left alone by his new second-in-command, Jessica (Liv Tyler), and the station’s populace in general. Among the ship’s residents are overworked mechanic Ted (Matt Bomer), his wife Misty (Marisa Coughlan) and their daughter Sunshine (Kylie Rogers), along with Steve (Jerry O’Connell)—with whom Misty is having an affair—wife Donna (Kali Rocha) and their newborn child. We see few...

Space Station 76
Directed by Jack Plotnick
Written by Jennifer Elise Cox, Sam Pancake, Jack Plotnick, Kali Rocha, and Michael Stoyanov
Space Station 76 begins with a narration musing on the impermanence and isolation of asteroidal paths. It’s the overarching metaphor in a film that is hilariously set in a nostalgic, 1970s version of the future and populated with hurt, dysfunctional, and yearning characters.
Glen (Patrick Wilson) is the alcoholic, abrasive, and suicidal captain of the Omega 76; Jessica (Liv Tyler) is new aboard and although much more competent than her counterparts, she is struggling with her own maternal inabilities; Ted (Matt Bomer) is an earnest but naive mechanic who lives with Misty (Marisa Coughlan), his philandering wife, and their lonely, precocious daughter Sunshine (Kylie Rogers). Together, this motley cast of characters explores what it means to live in a future built on expectations from the past. What happens when...

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

Brake Trailer. Gabe Torres‘ Brake (2012) movie trailer stars Stephen Dorff, Chyler Leigh, Jr Bourne, Tom Berenger, and Kali Rocha. Brake‘s plot synopsis: “A Secret Service Agent is held captive in the trunk of a car and endures high-speed mental and physical torture as terrorists attempt to extract needed information for their sinister plot.”
I thought this was a re-dux of Buried but it actually looks much better. The viewer will be surprised at the amount and varying tricks up the kidnapper’s sleeve.
Brake also stars King Orba, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Sammy Sheik, Kent Shocknek, Jaylen Moore, Stephen J. Bridgewater, and Matthew Pollino.
Watch the Brake movie trailer and leave your thoughts on it in the comments section below. For more Brake photos, videos, and information, check out our Brake Page. Brake opens in Us theaters through IFC in Theaters on March 23, 2012.
