Buried in Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David J. Garrow’s 1,400-page tome about former President Barack Obama’s rise to the White House is the headline-grabbing revelation that he had a serious relationship with – and proposed marriage (twice!) to – a woman other than wife Michelle.
Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama also includes details that a young Obama may have continued to see his former flame, Sheila Miyoshi Jager, even after he met his future first lady. Some reports have breathlessly claimed that Obama cheated on Michelle.

Former President Barack Obama proposed to another woman before he met wife Michelle Obama, according to an upcoming biography on his life before his presidency.
In the new book, Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, Obama’s ex-girlfriend Sheila Miyoshi Jager tells author David Garrow, “In the winter of ‘86, when we visited my parents, he asked me to marry him.”
The former couple had dated and lived together for years before Obama proposed in 1986 when he was 25. Jager was 23 at the time and her parents thought she was too young to get married. So she told him, “Not yet,...

On his first date with Michelle Robinson, who would eventually take his surname, Barack Obama took her to see Spike Lee‘s “Do The Right Thing.” And so began a relationship that would span decades, lead to the White House, and many more movie dates to come, including an evening with “Monster Trucks.”
THR has dug up some of the movie requests the White House sent out during the Obama years, and apparently, he loved watching pretty much anything and everything Hollywood had to offer.

Chicago – The year was 2006, and the photographer was Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com. The portrait subject was the future president of the United States, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois. For the first time, on his last day in office, we publish this portrait of the 44th executive representative of America.

President Obama, a biracial man who self identifies as an African American, was born in Hawaii in 1961, to Ann Durham, and was named after his father (who he only met once). Raised by a “village” – which included his grandparents on his mother’s side – he started his improbable road to the White House by graduating from Columbia College with a degree in political science in 1983. He moved to Chicago shortly thereafter, and worked famously as a community organizer from 1985 to 1988 there.

Devon Terrell as Barry Obama: The future U.S. president as a Columbia University student in the early 1980s. Barry the Optimist (See previous post: “'Barry' Obama & Me: Finding Common Ground with the Future U.S. President.”) Like Obama, I'm inclined to attempt to bring you around on the subject, to find common ground, because like both Barry and Barack, I too am an optimist. But then again, unlike Barry or Barack, I'm pretty sure it ultimately won't work. In truth, my optimism has waned over the years. For Barry, that optimism, backed up by a fearlessness regarding his own physical safety (partially driven by nicotine, as Barry smoked a lot), is what the film Barry is all about. My waning optimism notwithstanding, this too is something we have in common. (Although I never smoked. Well, not cigarettes.) According to Barry, it was in the fall of 1981 that optimism was...

Before he became the Commander-in-Chief, Barack Obama was a New York college student named Barry. As his second term draws to a close, Netflix is readying Vikram Gandhi’s timely biopic for release on December 16, and today brings forth a closer look at Gandhi’s portrait of the outgoing president.
Whereas Southside With You chronicled the formative years of Obama’s relationship with Michelle Robinson, Barry rolls back the years to 1981, at a time when the would-be Potus enrolled in Columbia University. A budding junior with lofty ambitions, this latest Netflix original chronicles Obama’s formative relationships and friendships, with many unfolding within a “crime-ridden and racially charged environment.”
Indeed, we’ve already caught a glimpse of Aussie actor Devon Terrell in the title role via previous teasers but here, Terrell commands the screen, delivering a performance that captures the rousing voice and even mannerisms of Barack Obama remarkably well.

Two months ago, Richard Tanne’s poignant drama Southside With You chronicled the formative years of Barack Obama and his relationship with budding lawyer Michelle Robinson, who would later go on to become the First Lady of the United States. With Barry, Netflix is primed to turn back the clock further still, focusing on Obama’s life at Columbia University circa 1981.
Following a premiere at Tiff earlier in the year, the online streamer has now rolled out the first trailer for the upcoming biopic, placing Devon Terrell in the role of the future Potus. Vikram Gandhi is the director behind the lens, and this simple, stylish teaser captures the spirit of Obama’s college years without so much as a single line of dialogue. Earlier this year, Richard Tanne’s “Southside with You” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to general acclaim. The film followed a young Barack Obama and a young Michelle Robinson in 1989 on their very first date. Now, the second film about Barack Obama’s younger life will soon be upon us: “Barry,” which follows Obama in his junior year at Columbia University in 1981, a pivotal year in the life of the future president when he developed his opinions about race, government and America. The film stars Devon Terrell as Obama in his debut acting performance. It co-stars Ashley Judd (“Double Jeopardy”), Jenna Elfman (“Friends With Benefits”, Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Witch”), Jason Mitchell (“Straight Outta Compton”), Ellar Coltrane (“Boyhood”) and more. Watch a teaser trailer for the film below.

Parker Sawyers and Tika Sumpter are Barack and Michelle in a romantic day-in-the-life without much actual life to it
Well-meaning, but as twee as a greetings card, this romance follows the day-long first date between Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers), then an ambitious young legal intern, and Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter), his supervisor at the firm. Decent performances notwithstanding, there’s a cloying quality to some of the scenes that turns the romance of the president and his first lady into something akin to a magazine photo story.

★★★☆☆ Southside with You is the film equivalent of a comfortable pair of familiar shoes, the feeling of sitting down into a cosy chair, or the first sip of a cup of tea - it's 'nice'. That is to damn with rather faint praise. This may not be one for the ages, but there is a lot to like about Richard Tanne's debut feature. In a sprightly 80 minutes it recounts one of the most significant first dates in history: that of a tall, feisty, intelligent and principled knockout named Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama, a sincere, smooth-talking, disorganised yet charismatic young lawyer who's so laid back he's practically horizontal.

Amid the current firestorm of political anxiety and absurdity emerges Southside With You, a sweet, unadorned romance that follows young Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson’s first date back in 1989. The film offers an unexpected but welcome respite from the oft ugly election drama that’s pervaded our lives as of late, reminding us that the talking heads we watch on cable and YouTube are, in fact, attached to real people with real feelings. While the Obamas haven’t historically had any serious issues being perceived as sensitive, hard-working people, it’s still a bit startling to see them clash wits and exchange flirty glances outside the presidential circus.
The film plays out in an immediately recognizable form to those familiar with Richard Linklater’s Before series or the late Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy, following the future it-couple as they walk around Chicago and use the culture-rich city as inspiration for their high-minded,...

President Barack Obama has joined their ranks, but the subject matter of “Southside With You” is decidedly different. The film chronicles his first date with Michelle Robinson, now the First Lady.

Barack Obama is known for playing the long game. This appealing, deceptively low-key movie shows the future president making one of his most inspired and, ultimately, foresighted moves on a summer's day in Chicago in 1989. That's when he goes on a date with fellow lawyer Michelle Robinson. They spend a talkative, quietly flirtatious afternoon-into-evening made up of small moments that will pivot (as politicians now say) into something historic. They start at the Art Institute, continue on to a community meeting at a housing project (where Obama addresses the crowd and impresses Michelle without ever quite resorting to showboating), and...

First dates aren’t easy. There are so many variables that go into determining whether or not something is a “good” date that it’s impossible to control. If I’ve learned anything about dating during my 46 years on Earth (and that is debatable), I have learned that you have to give yourself up to it if it’s going to work at all. You cannot force a good date. You can only go into it open to whatever experience you’re going to have, and to whoever the person is that you’re spending that time with. On the surface, Southside With You is simply a film about a first date, opening with both people getting ready and ending as they say goodnight and head their own ways again. In this particular case, the first date is noteworthy because it’s between Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson, the future...

A movie’s commercial prospects don’t usually rise and fall with its subject’s polling numbers, but the best news for Richard Tanne’s “Southside With You” is that Barack Obama’s approval ratings continue to climb. Tanne’s first feature offers a lightly fictionalized version of the first romantic encounter between Barack (Parker Sawyers), a 27-year-old summer associate at a prestigious Chicago law firm, and Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter), a first-year associate who’s put dating on hold to focus on her career. That outline alone will be enough to turn away many politically conservative viewers, and even...

I love a good walk and talk movie. When you can just watch a pair of characters interact, usually while falling in love, it can sometimes lead to a special bit of cinema. This week, we have the added bonus of that sort of mellow film also being a kind of backdoor biopic of President Barack Obama. It doesn’t really reference his future at all, but this is about a specific moment in his life, as well as that of the woman he would marry. It’s a nice film, one that also has the distinction of being both mature and family friendly. There’s a real chance that it could turn out to be a breakout hit, as the fascination factor will draw in audiences, as well as just the overt quality of the story being told. Keep an eye out for it! The flick is described as...

Southside With You is also about a date, a first date in the Chicago summer of 1989 between the then-unknown Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) and Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter). The charming new clip for Southside With You shows the President and First Lady's profound first date story. "It's not a date," Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) tells her teasing parents, while Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) smoothly informs his mother about the meet-up. Although this year’s Siggraph theme,”Render the Possibilities,” offers a nice catchphrase for all of the cutting-edge CG eye candy on display next week at the Anaheim Convention Center, there’s also a timely sub-theme revolving around empathy in Vr, which can be witnessed in other presentations as well.
Given the tragic racial violence and anger that has swept the country, Carnegie Mellon University’s Vr experience, “Injustice,” couldn’t be timelier — or more educational. It’s built around racially motivated police brutality. Participants witness an act of racial discrimination, forcing them to make moral and ethical decisions on the spot. They can actively engage with, and alter, the storyline by selecting a variety of dialogue choices.
Similarly, “Invasion!,” explores ideas around character empathy and immersive Vr “presence” with a close alien encounter. Presented in real-time and directed by “Madagascar’s” Eric Darnell, the animated short features narration by Ethan Hawke.

Roadside Attractions has debuted a fantastic trailer for Southside with You, the film from Sundance this year that retells Barack Obama's first date in Chicago in 1989. Parker Sawyers plays Obama, and Tika Sumpter plays Michelle Robinson, and they're perfect together in this - they have chemistry that just works wonders. The film is being compared to Before Sunrise and you'll see why with this trailer - there are many gorgeous shots of them strolling around Chicago, and it has that magical romantic feeling every frame. It's a wonderful film - read my Sundance review. Don't miss this. Long before Barack Obama stepped foot in the Oval Office and made history, the biggest dilemma that occupied the mind of the would-be President of the United States revolved around one Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter), and it’s that budding romance that anchors Richard Tanne’s intimate summer drama, Southside With You.
Written by Tanne himself, the biopic shuns convention by focusing solely on the relationship between Obama (Parker Sawyers) and his significant other, who would eventually go on to become his wife and First Lady. In fact, Southside With You tells the story of the pair’s fateful first date, and what may seem like a bright and breezy premise makes for a touching, focused and poignant drama in today’s first trailer.

“You and I share a lot of the same interests.” And eventually they’d share the title of America’s First Couple. Here’s the first trailer for Southside With You, the story of the first date — “This is not a date” — of Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson on a summer’s day in 1989 Chiacgo. Suffice it so say, things went well. Michelle (Tika Sumpter) initially isn’t all that thrilled that her law firm’s new summer associate from Harvard (Parker Sawyers) has invited her to a…...

History will ultimately decide the legacy of President Barack Obama when his eight years in office ends later this year, but it's safe to say his rise to the Oval Office was pretty remarkable. Part of that journey involved one Michelle Robinson, who would become his romantic partner, wife, and First Lady, and the upcoming "Southside With You" details their courtship. Read More: 5 Great Movie Presidents Worth Re-Electing Directed by Richard Tanne, the film might seem to employ a somewhat cornball concept, tracking a single date between Barack and Michelle over the course of one day. But we were won over by the lowkey film at Sundance, calling it "winningly sweet and earnest" and "a charmer" that resonates far beyond the two people it revolves around. Here's the synopsis: Inspired by Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date, Southside With You recounts the eventful summer day in 1989 when a young...

Arriving just in time for the end of the Obama era, Southside With You depicts a history-changing summer afternoon in 1989 in which our future national leader took Michelle Robinson out on what would become their first date. Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers), working at a corporate law farm as an associate from Harvard Law, persuades his co-worker Michelle (Tika Sumpter, also a producer here) to attend a community meeting, which is not a date, according to her. What follows is certainly one, as we can see in the first trailer, which arrived today ahead of an August release.
We said in our review, “Writer-director Richard Tanne understands that this would be difficult to pull off if it didn’t work as a romantic drama first and foremost. In his last year in office, a second film on President Obama has been put into development (the first is "Southside With You," the Sundance drama which Miramax picked up, which follows a young Barack Obama and future First Lady Michelle Robinson on their first date, during the summer of 1989). The second feature, titled "Barry," will also focus on a young Barack Obama - an even younger Obama - a college student living in New York City in 1981, trying to find his way, when he has a fateful encounter with a young woman. Devon Terrell (who, you might recall, was cast as the lead in Steve McQueen's upcoming HBO series "Codes of Conduct") has...

Following a successful partnership on “Mr. Holmes,” Miramax and Roadside Attractions are nearing a low-seven-figure deal to acquire the Obama romance movie “Southside With You,” an individual familiar with the negotiations have told TheWrap. Yesterday, Nicholas Bell and I issued our Top 10 New Voices, and now we launch into our New Faces. They range in age, amount of screen time, and in this year’s batch of New Faces made memorable turns in supporting or principle character roles. Narrowly breaking into our top ten list we have names such as Sand Storm‘s Lammis Ammar and Spa Night‘s Haerry Kim. Here is our top ten countdown.
#10. Royalty Hightower – The Fits.
Move over Creed. The youngest featured actress to be profiled in our ten set was embraced in Park City as the next “it” personality and for good reason. In Anna Rose Holmer’s debut, Royalty Hightower’s Toni has a lot of volume – she physically inhabits a character who is at odds with her burgeoning teenagehood (a transition that is not always welcomed) in a performance that empathically comes across as non-actingly natural.

As Barack Obama nears the end of his presidency, the new movie Southside With You depicts his first date with Michelle as a loving romance. Departing presidents don’t usually get off so lightly …
American critics are drooling over the new movie about Michelle and Barack Obama’s first date. Southside With You is “a sweet, mature drama with layers of social and racial issues, family dynamics and, yes – romance,” according to Mashable. “The result makes you realise how few realistic and three-dimensional date movies have been made in an era of throbbing hook-up encounters and R-rated horny teen gross-outs,” argues the Hollywood Reporter’s critic.

Read More: The 2016 Indiewire Sundance Bible: All the Reviews, Interviews and News Posted During The Festival The moment Parker Sawyers surfaces as a young Barack Obama reaching for a cigarette in "Southside With You" invites immediate chuckles, which continue as would-be wife Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) prepares for an outing that he promises is not a date. "Thought you said he's just another smooth-talking brother," her mother says as Michelle tries to downplay expectations. But expectations, in a movie that turns the heavily mythologized courtship of America's future First Family, don't go down easy. But when the laughter subsides, the perceptiveness of writer-director Richard Tanne's first feature settles in. While a bit too enamored of the foreshadowing built into its premise, Tanne's impeccably acted two-hander examines the Obamas through an infectious, talky script loaded with keen observations, not unlike the appeal of its subjects. A blatant nod...
