I’m running close to a decade behind reading Peter Bagge’s books – but, the weird thing is, I seem to still be reading all of his books, just with that big time-delay. I have no explanation, and may catch up one of these days: cartooning is time-intensive work, and even someone as prolific as Bagge doesn’t pile up books the way a prose writer like Stephen King or Nora Roberts does.
That’s as close to a reason why I read his 2012 miniseries/2013 graphic novel Reset here at the end of 2023. As usual, I find bits of the worldbuilding to be weird, especially in retrospect: maybe because of the things Bagge needed to create this story, maybe because I fundamentally don’t agree with his assumptions about life and society in general.
Bagge’s worlds are full of mildly updated ’50s gender-essentialism: men are hot-headed and often physically violent,...

James Patterson, Margaret Atwood Among Thousands Of Writers Urging AI Companies To Honour Copyrights
James Patterson, Suzanne Collins and Margaret Atwood are among thousands of writers endorsing an open letter from the Authors Guild urging AI companies to obtain permission before incorporating copyrighted work into their technologies.
“Millions of copyrighted books, articles, essays, and poetry provide the ‘food’ for AI systems, endless meals for which there has been no bill,” the letter reads in part. “You’re spending billions of dollars to develop AI technology. It is only fair that you compensate us for using our writings, without which AI would be banal and extremely limited.”

Season 2 of “Ginny & Georgia” is back and better than ever with a bevy of pop culture references and a killer soundtrack. Ginny’s love of literature, reading and writing was established in Season 1, and references to classic books and authors continue to thread through the show’s sophomore season.
As Ginny continues to unravel the layers of her mother Georgia’s (Brianne Howey) past, she still has to deal with an out-of-touch English professor who doesn’t exactly grasp the benefits of a diverse literary canon. Ginny’s bedroom is stocked full of classic and colorful book spines. Her dad Zion (Nathan Mitchell) also references a lot of literary figures.
Ginny’s English teacher Mr. Gitten (Johnathan Potts) challenges her to select a book to present for her AP English class; her selection should, in his words, be “anything that encompasses the Black experience in America.” The three options...

TV veteran Alyssa Milano leads Brazen, an adaptation of bestselling author Nora Roberts’ 1988 novel Brazen Virtue. She plays Grace Miller, a mystery writer looking into her sister’s murder. Thanks to the help of a hot detective (Sam Page) and her own keen investigative skills, Grace uncovers a truth that is way wilder than fiction. The Who’s the Boss? alum (right) clues us in on the gig. (Credit: Sergei Bachlakov/Netflix) Even as Grace is grieving, she’s able to focus on hunting a killer and enjoy a little romance. Alyssa Milano: Just like real life, you have your ups and downs. Finding purpose in grief is Grace’s superpower. What makes her effective at her job? So much of what drives Grace is her ability to think outside the box and think creatively. Did you get to speak with Nora Roberts herself? I did! I asked if there...

Halfway through the new Netflix original movie Brazen, a character says of his recently murdered ex-wife: “The list of suspects gets to be a long one when it comes to a dead hooker.”
This loathsome man gets punched in the face by Alyssa Milano for his disrespect, telegraphing that we’re dealing with a story that wants to be seen as nuanced in its sex-worker representation. The movie makes a few more limp attempts at being progressive, using language like “artists” and “clients” to refer to pornographers and their fans.

Alyssa Milano is attached to executive produce a series adaptation of Dr. Connie Mariano’s memoir “The White House Doctor” that is in development at Fox, Variety has learned.
Per the show’s logline, the White House doctor is known as the “Shadow of the President.” Whether in the ER-like Medical Unit in the White House itself or traveling abroad, she‘s as close to the President as the Secret Service. As the President’s closest confidante, she’s burdened with the country’s most history-making secrets. Inspired by the memoir of the first woman of color to serve as physician to three presidents, the series is about a smart but impulsive White House physician as she navigates the dangerous intersection of medicine and politics and struggles to keep her own life together while safeguarding the life of the most powerful patient on Earth.

“The Witcher,” “Stay Close,” “Cobra Kai,” “Emily in Paris,” and “Manifest” all retained their dominion on Netflix’s English-language TV Top 10 list for the second full week of 2022, while the sixth season of makeover show “Queer Eye” fell through the cracks, leaving room for newcomers “Cheer” (Season 2) and “Archive 81” to join the ranks.

More like “Fifty Shades of Beige,” “Brazen” applies an unconvincing dollop of kink into an equally by-the-numbers suburban mystery, providing a vehicle for producer-star Alyssa Milano as a crime novelist turned sleuth after her sister’s murder. This Netflix adaptation of a 1988 tome by prolific romance scribe Nora Roberts is slick but increasingly silly, its various elements so obvious and formulaic that they induce giggles more than chills by the climax. Still, whether viewers are looking for unintentional laughs or the streaming equivalent of a throwaway beach read, Monika Mitchell’s feature does offer some guilty-pleasure entertainment value.
Introduced reading from her latest “Brazen Virtue” (the actual Roberts novel this is based on) at a public event, Milano’s Grace Miller is a celebrity author with a big fanbase. Having frowned upon some of Kathleen’s (Emilie Ullerup) past life choices, she hasn’t actually seen her younger sibling in five years,...

"Careful, Grace. Reign in your over-active imagination. Or I will do it for you." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for Brazen, a murder mystery thriller adapted from "Brazen Virtue" by Nora Roberts. Grace, a prominent mystery writer and crime expert, hurries to her family home in Washington, D.C., after her estranged sister summons her. But when her sister is killed and her double life as a webcam performer is revealed, Grace ignores the warnings of the detective and gets involved in the case... Which doesn't sound like a good idea? But "true crime" is popular these days! So why not? Alyssa Milano stars as Grace, along with Sam Page, Malachi Weir, Barry W. Levy, Colleen Wheeler, Lossen Chambers, and Matthew Finlan. This looks like the weekly "crime drama" TV special, not anything worthwhile to watch in theaters. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Monika Mitchell's Brazen,...

If you thought Ghostbusters is laying on the “feminism” shtick on too thick, wait until you get a load of Love Between the Covers, the documentary about romance novels and the women who read and write them. Billed as a movie a little bit about pride and a little bit about prejudice, the film explores the somewhat underground world of the proclaimed millions of women (and some men) who are devotees of the romantic novel genre. “I don’t care what the critics say,” is a refrain you hear often when it comes to popular media, be it movies, TV series, musicians, and yes, even books. When it comes to the literary world, no one gets more grief than those who write or enjoy the works of the romance genre. In the snooty world of books, even the literati need someone to look down their noses at, and sadly, romance is the bottom of the food chain.
The documentary Love Between the Covers aims to shake those assumptions though. Probably every reader in their time has made a joke at the expense of the romance genre, but Laurie Khan wants to look at those kinds of books in a new way, as she asks us: what if we celebrated them?

NBC will has already started its coverage of Super Bowl Xlvi (it started at noon Et, but the actual game doesn’t start until 6:30pm). How are other channels trying to lure you away? Here’s a quick look:
Downton Abbey: I know at least one person staying home from a Super Bowl party so she can watch the new episode (PBS, check local listings). Here’s hoping Violet’s “cold” is better.
Chick flicks: TBS is betting on The Wedding Date (6:15 p.m. Et) and Hitch (8 p.m. Et), while AMC is following a 2:30 p.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that LeAnn Rimes was the precocious youngster that nabbed the Best New Artist winner at the 1997 Grammys, isn’t it? That’s primarily because over the past few years, Rimes went from being a country-crossover sensation to tabloid mainstay, thanks to her relationship with her now-husband, Playboy Club actor Eddie Cibrian. (The two began an affair while working on 2009′s cheese-tastic Northern Lights, which ultimately turned into its own Nora Roberts drama and caused the demise of both of their respective marriages.)

She's not all talk. Oprah Winfrey is the most charitable celebrity - by a huge margin - giving away more than $40 million primarily through the Oprah Winfrey Foundation for causes including education and programs for women and children, according to a national philanthropic group. Novelist Nora Roberts came in second, donating $4.45 million to the Nora Roberts Foundation to support literacy in underserved communities, followed by actress Meryl Streep, who gave $4 million to the Silver Mountain Foundation for the Arts. These contributions were made in 2009, the most recent year financial information was available, according to The Giving Back Fund, which compiled the celebrity list.

At what point does an affair stop becoming tabloid fodder and start becoming a love story? Is it after a year and a half? That’s what LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian are hoping. The couple sat down for their first joint interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts for Wednesday’s In the Spotlight Nashville special. Rimes started off the conversation solo, and those tears we saw in the promo came when Roberts read back to her a passage from Rimes’ memoir in which she describes being a teen star who’d wake up not wanting to perform for anybody,...

Publisher's Note: The following isn't an actual book review, but after yesterday's Nicholas Sparks' heavy April Fool's gag, it should provide a nice palate cleanser.
I've spent a good chunk of today feeling enraged after reading an article about Nicholas Sparks. I really would like to punch him in his smug face. I have read one of his books, A Walk to Remember, in which a teenage 'bad boy' falls in love with a virtuous girl who is dying of cancer. Lives are changed, tears are shed. This pretty much sums up the majority of his works from what I can gather. I have seen the film of The Notebook and bits of Message in a Bottle, and they're the same nonsense. You know going in that there will be an 'epic' love story where people will be kept apart by ridiculous circumstances and then most likely death, probably from something preventable,...

Naked in Death is the first in an ongoing series of so far 30 books (and some novellas and short stories) by J.D. Robb, a pseudonym for the already ridiculously prolific romance novelist Nora Roberts. The books are futuristic police procedurals with a core of romance at the centre. Lt. Eve Dallas is a driven and dedicated homicide detective who is called in when a young and beautiful licenced companion (read: prostitute - in the 2050s, prostitution is legalized and licenced) is brutally murdered. Her superiors are keen to have the case solved quickly and quietly, as the victim was also the granddaughter of a powerful Us senator.
Under the murdered woman, there is also a note, suggesting that this murder is just the first of six. Lt. Dallas may be dealing with a serial killer. Her main suspect is the gorgeous, obscenely wealthy and extremely powerful Roarke, a self-made bazillionaire,...

Why could LeAnn Rimes be president? Why are the TV networks once again grateful that Barack Obama is? And how close did Dancing With the Stars come to upsetting American Idol? The answers—and more questions—in this week's TV ratings pop quiz: 1. What exactly makes Rimes Oval Office materal? Her approval ratings. In the wake of last week's tabloid scandal, Rimes' TV movie with Eddie Cibrian, Nora Roberts' Northern Lights, finished as the No. 3 show in all the great, big cable universe, the latest Nielsen rankings show. An Affair, Sorry, TV Movie to Remember: Lifetime's LeAnn Rimes-Eddie Cibrian publicity coup, Nora Roberts' Northern Lights, scored with an estimated 4.5 million viewers last night, the network said. The movie is the network's biggest of the year, outdrawing the likes of Rosie O'Donnell's America (3.2 million) and Sigourney Weaver's Prayers for Bobby (3.8 million). It fell short, however, of last year's more fully clothed The Memory Keeper's Daughter (5.8 million) and Coco Chanel (5.2 million).
