A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there was Star Wars… and only Star Wars. Oh, you could buy a novelization of George Lucas’ cosmic saga of good and evil, as well as a Marvel Comics’ adaptation of the film that kept the post-Death Star story going in… some very singular ways. (Pour one out for the giant green space-rabbit Jaxxon T. Tumperakki.) Eventually, there were toys — so, so many toys — as well as soundtrack albums, coffee-table books of concept art, and loads of other merchandise. But...

If you’re a Gen X or “geriatric” millennial Star Wars fanatic, you probably have a story related to the contortions you had to go through to get your hands on the notorious only-aired-once 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special.
Freshman year. My college roommate Andrew brought back a bootleg tape — there has never been a legitimate release — given to him by a guy who knew a guy at his regular comic shop. We watched with breathless anticipation that turned to quizzical horror — a generational rite of passage.
Today, you can go to YouTube and take your pick from among several Star Wars Holiday Special uploads, at least one of which has remained up for seven years and has 3.6 million views. So much for taboo. So much for resourcefulness. So much for magic.

The Oscar screenplays are continuing to arrive and today I've added four more to the list as Focus offers up Hyde Park on Hudson and Promised Land and Walt Disney Pictures has made available the screenplays for Frankenweenie and Wreck-It Ralph. The screenplay for Hyde Park on Hudson was written by Richard Nelson and if you're interested you can scroll to Page 14 and find the one scene in the film that everyone will surely be talking about after seeing the film. As for Promised Land, I watched it a couple nights ago and it's a decent film, written by Matt Damon and John Krasinski. It's a message movie focused on fracking and while it quite clearly has an agenda, it doesn't beat you over the head to the point you're numb. Frankenweenie was written by John August based on Leonard Ripps screenplay for Tim Burton's 1984 animated short. Wreck-It Ralph...

Frankenweenie Directed by: Tim Burton Written by: John August (screenplay), Tim Burton and Leonard Ripps (story) Starring: Charlie Tahan, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, Winona Ryder, Martin Landau, Atticus Shaffer Love him or hate him, I think most people would agree that Tim Burton has not been at the top of his game over the past decade. Sure, Alice in Wonderland earned over a billion dollars worldwide, but it was one of four or five half-hearted remakes he has directed since 2001. His work has felt creatively neutered for some time now, and even the allure of Johnny Depp as a vampire could not save Dark Shadows from financial failure this past summer. Now, for his second film of the year, he is essentially remaking one of his own films. Can Frankenweenie provide the creative spark he so desperately needs? Tim Burton started his career as an animator at Disney back in the '80s,...

Frankenweenie
Written by John August, story by Tim Burton and Leonard Ripps, based on Tim Burton’s short film Frankenweenie
Directed by Tim Burton
USA 2012 imdb
A feature-length, black and white 3-D animated expansion of his original black and white live action short film, Frankenweenie is an amazing technical achievement by Tim Burton. The film looks fantastic and for once the 3-D isn’t just an excuse for Hollywood to dip their sticky fingers into your wallet. Rather than constantly thrusting objects into into your face like most 3-D horror films, Burton uses the technology to create a film environment to draw in the audience, apparently taking his cue from Henry Selick’s immersive animated masterpiece Coraline. Characters are blocked like in a theatre piece, moving from upstage to downstage as necessary. In the film’s best sequence, Burton draws the audience into the middle of a burning building, pulling...

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie is almost out in theaters (this week Oct. 5th to be exact), and Disney isn't skimping out on the marketing. Today they've released six new posters in the retro horror movie style and personally, I think they're some of the coolest I've seen in a while.
Movie posters these days seem less of an art form, as they used to be, and more of a science. Advertising companies that come up with them stick to established styles and themes, rarely branching off into something new and different. Frankly, that kind of sucks. So when Disney sent me an email this morning about six new Frankenweenie posters, I wasn't all that thrilled...until I looked at them.
Sure they aren't too outside the norm of what's being done today, but they are different, and emulate an older style of movie posters that collectors get all excited about.

Exclusively for IMAX fans as part of IMAX.s 12:01 program – those attending the Frankenweenie midnight shows in the first hours of October 5 will receive an adorable and limited edition Frankenweenie print using an original sketch by Tim Burton. Check for list of participating theatres on imax.com; while supplies last. I’ve become a fast fan for these 12:01 posters – a smart strategy by the studios. Just earlier this Summer, Fox’ Prometheus had a beautiful IMAX poster that I was thrilled to add to my collection. Has the same flavor as my favorite books from when I was a kid – Dorrie The Little Witch.

Check out a new IMAX poster for Frankenweenie, a film that is sure to warm your hearts.
Presented by Disney, Frankenweenie is directed by Tim Burton, produced by Burton and Allison Abbate, from a screenplay by John August, based on a screenplay by Lenny Ripps, based on an original idea by Tim Burton.
When Burton originally conceived the idea for the film he envisioned it as a full-length, stop-motion animated film. Due to budget constraints, he instead directed it as a live-action short, released in 1984.
Frankenweenie follows in the footsteps of Tim Burton’s other stop-motion animated films Corps Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas – both of which were nominated for Academy Awards. The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (“Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands”), Catherine O’Hara (“Beetlejuice,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas”), Martin Short (“Mars Attacks!”) and Martin Landau (“Ed Wood,” Sleepy Hollow”) and Charlie Tahan,...
