What if Bruce, the mechanical shark in "Jaws," had actually worked? It's one of the biggest what-ifs in Hollywood history. While the movie's Great White Shark may have been "a perfect engine" (to quote Richard Dreyfuss' bespectacled scientist Matt Hooper), Bruce -- who got its moniker from Steven Spielberg's lawyer, Bruce Ramer -- was anything but. Because of this, Spielberg and editor Verna Fields were forced to reconfigure the film's raw footage to avoid showing "The Great White Turd" (as the movie's crew came to call it) as much as possible. What emerged was a triumph of minimalistic horror filmmaking where what you don't see is just as terrifying as what you do, if not more so.
But what if Spielberg had never gotten to direct one of his all-time best movies to begin with? It's easy to recognize in hindsight that ol' Stevie Boy was fated to adapt Peter Benchley's pulpy best-seller,...

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this week, Jaws (1975) is now considered one of the all-time greats, but it’s amazing that the movie even got to the screen at all. Major production problems, an unfinished script and a nervous director all spelled disaster, but somehow the film came together and became a masterpiece of terror and suspense. 1. Steven Spielberg was not the studio’s original choice to direct. Universal Pictures first approached director Dick Richards...

Geoffrey Lewis, the American character actor with well over 200 film and television credits to his name, has died aged 79. The father of actress Juliette Lewis, he was probably most recognisable for a string of appearances alongside Clint Eastwood in the '70s and '80s. But his career extended much further than that.Lewis was born in 1935 and spent his earliest years in Rhode Island, but his family upped sticks to California when he was ten. Noting his aptitude and enthusiasm for the performing arts, his school drama teacher arranged for him to return to New England for summer stints at the Plymouth Theatre in Massachusetts, and he also worked in New York in off-Broadway stage productions. His first screen appearance was an uncredited walk-on as "Man In Park" in an obscure horror mystery called The Fat Black Pussycat. Bit parts aside, it would be another decade before he got...

The Statham stars as a tough Las Vegas bodyguard in action thriller, Wild Card. Here's the new UK trailer and poster...
In 1986, there was Heat, a thriller written by William Goldman and starring Burt Reynolds. Far from a hit critically or financially, Goldman later described the film as "One of my major disasters" - in no small part because its production was such a nightmare.
Heat was initially headed up by Robert Altman, but he was quickly replaced by Dick Richards, who got into a fight with Reynolds and left the set in an ambulance. Richards later returned, only to fall from a camera crane and depart, once again, on a stretcher.
Wild Card is essentially a remake of Heat, this time starring Jason Statham. But director Simon West says this is a more faithful version of William Goldman's original script, which was unfortunately compromised by the 1986 film's revolving door of directors.

Above: Us poster for Le Sauvage (Jean-Paul Rappeneau, France/Italy, 1975).
Since my column last week on the lesser-known posters of Jean-Luc Godard got so much attention, and since this week the great Catherine Deneuve turned 70 years old, I thought I’d do the same for the grand diva of French cinema. Deneuve—“the most beautiful woman in the world”—has graced well-known posters for numerous masterpieces, whether for Bunuel’s Tristana or Belle de Jour, Demy’s Umbrellas of Cherbourg or Donkey Skin, Truffaut’s Mississippi Mermaid or Polanski’s Repulsion, and when I was searching for a poster to mark her birthday last Tuesday, these were the films that kept popping up. But Deneuve has been making films for over 50 years and has appeared in over 110 of them so there should be a lot more to choose from. So that is what I want to focus on here to celebrate Ms.

Raymond Chandler fans, take note. Michael De Luca, Andrew Marlowe and Terri Edda Miller have sold a one-hour drama inspired by Chandler's famed detective Philip Marlowe to ABC. The casting director will have a tall order in finding the right actor to play Marlowe, a witty, no-bullshit tough guy who still has compassion for the failings of his fellow men. Previous big-screen Marlowes have been played by the likes of -- most famously -- Humphrey Bogart (Howard Hawks' "The Big Sleep"), Elliott Gould (Robert Altman's "The Long Goodbye") and Robert Mitchum (Dick Richards' "Farewell, My Lovely," and Michael Winner's 1978 version of "The Big Sleep"). Dick Powell and Robert Montgomery were Marlowes, too. Here's more info:This smart, sexy and stylish update of Raymond Chandler’s timeless character follows the investigations of wisecracking, edgy and rugged private detective Philip Marlowe, as he navigates the morally complicated world of today’s Los Angeles,...

Billy (Peter Billingsley) is shocked to discover that his father (Edward Herrmann) mother Sally (Catherine Hicks) are getting divorced. Torn away from his beloved New York City, Billy is relocated to Arizona along with her mother’s childhood sweetheart, Mike (Paul LeMat) whom she has reconnected with.
To make things worse, upon arriving in Death Valley for a vacation before their move, Billy stumbles upon a crime scene and becomes enmeshed in a life or death struggle with a mysterious man who is stalking the family.
Peter Billingsley is easily the star of the show. It’s a lot for any actor to handle, much less a child actor, and Billingsley plays everything right. Catherine Hicks is also notable as Billingsley’s mother. Before Child’s Play, Hicks was playing a mother doing everything possible to protect her child from murderous danger. She’s a very capable actress, and doesn...

Horror fans should know the name Catherine Hicks well if only for her starring role as Karen Barclay in the original Child’s Play film. Not only does she give her son one of the very worst Christmas gifts in the history of the holiday, she then has to spend the majority of the film running from this possessed killer doll. Fans ate it up and turned this little film into a multi-film franchise that continues to this day (Don Mancini recently announced that filming had completed on Curse of Chucky in anticipation of a Halloween 2013 release). What fans might not know, however, is that Catherine Hicks actually made her feature film debut, alongside Peter Billingsley, way back in 1982 on a horror film called Death Valley.

Raymond Chandler's second Philip Marlowe novel has been filmed three times: first in disguise as the 1942 B-movie The Falcon Takes Over, next as the excellent noir thriller Murder My Sweet (1944) starring Dick Powell, and third as this elegant neo-noir with a perfectly cast Robert Mitchum, at 58 the oldest actor to play Marlowe. It appeared during a period of nostalgia for the interwar years (along with The Great Gatsby, The Sting, The Way We Were, Chinatown) and is set in 1941 during the months leading up to Pearl Harbor. To a bluesy score by David Shire, Marlowe goes down the mean streets of a Los Angeles lit by John A Alonzo to resemble paintings by Edward Hopper. He's searching for Velma, the missing moll of gangster Moose Malloy, and following Joe Dimaggio's hitting streak for the Yankees. He's a weary figure, aware that his chivalric values...

This is the third adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s Farewell, My Lovely but the first under its real name. The other two incarnations are the 1942’s The Falcon Takes Over and 1944’s Murder, My Sweet but this is the more faithful one of the movement to the big screen.
In true, neo-noir fashion, it begins with the protagonist caught in a problem of him being blamed for two murders. It starts with the voiceover summing up in a roundabout way until he picks up the phone to the police. “Come alone” is the last thing said to the policeman so he can explain it all; it’s when he meets the policeman that he begins to tell us his story.
It’s 1941 and we’re in Los Angeles, we have Robert Mitchum playing Philip Marlowe, a detective who has been hired by ex-convict Moose Malloy (Jack O’Hallorhan) to find the love of his life,...

According to entertainment Weekly Jason Statham is to produce and star in a remake of the film Heat. the Heat in question is not the Michael Mann, Rober De Niro offering from the mid 90’s but rather a remaking of the 1986 Dick Richards film which features Burt Reynolds as a former mercenary now turned bodyguard in Las Vegas, who fights the mob and is trying his best to save up enough money to move to Venice in Italy. Steven Chasman known for his work on Killer Elite will join Statham as a producer with the film to be directed by Brian De Palma. 80 year old William Goldman penned the original film script which was based on his own novel of the same name and is also writing for this remake, he last time he wrote a screenplay was for the 2003 Dreamcathcer. There is no word on who will co-star with...

Alright, alright... don't get your panties in a bunch. It's not Michael Mann's Heat that's about to get the remake treatment, but rather the 1986 Burt Reynolds vehicle of the same name (apparently there are quite a few movies called Heat). Directed by Dick Richards (Farewell, My Lovely), the original film starred Reynolds as a former gambling addict who now makes a living as a Las Vegas bodyguard. When a female friend gets savagely beaten, he helps her exact revenge on the mobsters who are responsible. The movie was based on a book by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Princess Bride), who also wrote the script. Now Brian De Palma has signed on to helm a new version with Jason Statham in the lead role. A remake like this should be an ideal fit for Jason Statham, and will probably be fairly similar to The Mechanic...

Jason Statham is going where Burt Reynolds has gone before. The "Transporter" actor will star in a remake of the mustached icon's 1987 film "Heat," producer Sierra/Affinity said on Wednesday. Do not get confused with Michael Mann's 1995 heist drama, despite sharing a title, this "Heat" is set in the world of gambling, not high-stakes robbery. Brian De Palma will direct the film from a script by Oscar-winner William Goldman. Goldman wrote the screenplay to the original film (and the novel it is based on), which was directed by Dick Richards ("Farewell, My...
