Magical realism is an essential part of Latin American fiction, a genre that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, using mundane settings and stories to explore larger-than-life themes and imagery. Though not commonly associated with superhero movies, it makes sense that the upcoming "Blue Beetle" would take at least some inspiration from the genre.
"Blue Beetle," of course, is set to be the first live-action superhero film with a Latino lead, telling the story of Jaime Reyes as he finds a mysterious alien scarab beetle that grants him superpowers. Though technically a part of James Gunn's new DC Universe, "Blue Beetle" is "totally disconnected" from the rest, allowing it to do some experimenting — like drawing inspiration from a classic work of magical realist Mexican cinema.
Speaking with Moviemaker magazine, "Blue Beetle" director Angel Manuel Soto talked about being inspired by the 1960 Mexican film "Macario," about a woodcutter who is visited by the Devil,...

Back when Warner Bros. was handing out Batman movies to Christopher Nolan, the studio was seemingly on to something. Initially plotting its own course away from the shared universe model of Marvel, Warners then suddenly started trying to emulate their rival to (mostly) disastrous effect.
There were brief moments of lucidity among the Warner execs, like when they greenlit Todd Phillips' "Joker" and Matt Reeves' "The Batman." But rather than recognizing that giving visionary filmmakers the chance to do something interesting with DC characters was the way to go, the studio still pushed ahead with establishing a shared universe, most recently scrapping the ill-fated Dceu in favor of building a new version to be led by new DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Unfortunately, winding down the Dceu in preparation for Gunn's vision has thus far proven not only awkward but outright detrimental to Warner and DC's standing.

DC’s Blue Beetle is skittering toward an unfortunate opening at the box office if the latest predictions are accurate. According to Boxoffice Pro, the superhero film starring Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes is tracking for the lowest opening weekend in the DC Extended Universe’s history. The site predicts a $12M-$17M domestic take for Blue Beetle’s opening gambit. Analysts also expect a domestic total of $27M-$55M for the film’s domestic run, a number that places Blue Beetle on the low end of DC‘s rickety ladder. However, it’s possible that the numbers are wrong, and Blue Beetle will open stronger than anticipated. We’ve seen underdog films blow past predictions, and positive word of mouth could boost the film’s performance.

When Angel Manuel Soto got the call from Warner Bros. about directing a DC movie, his mind was miles away from Blue Beetle. “I wanted to pitch ideas, and one of them was the Bane origin story,” Soto tells Den of Geek magazine. “I always thought that there was something interesting in exploring his reality and how a character like that comes to be.” He quickly found out, though, that “the conversation was not about that.” Instead, the studio had a more youthful and heroic figure in mind, telling Soto, “There’s this character that we’ve been developing for a couple of years. The Blue Beetle, a Latino superhero.”

Orchestrating a reboot of a single property is tricky, but reintroducing audiences to a universe is far more complex. Do you start from scratch? Do you keep certain characters because of their established history and fan appeal? Does rewriting a world mean everything that came before is moot? These likely are some of the questions DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran asked themselves when shaping the new DC Universe. Thankfully, Gunn isn’t shy about engaging with fans and recently clarified when the new Dcu canon begins.

Ready to get dolled up for “Medusa Deluxe?”
The nearly unclassifiable new feature from writer/director Thomas Hardiman, which is equal parts murder mystery, dark comedy and family drama (of sorts), is set to be released by A24 on August 11 in theaters and on VOD. And the first trailer is here to dazzle you. Watch it above.
“Medusa Deluxe” premiered last year at Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival and won a prize at Fantastic Fest in Austin for Best Direction. And it’s no wonder, either, since “Medusa Deluxe” plays out in a single “unbroken” shot, with the events unfolding almost in real time. It was shot by the great Robbie Ryan, an Irish cinematographer who also did “The Favourite,” “Marriage Story” and “C’mon C’mon” among many others.

Nathan Fillion has joined the cast of “Superman: Legacy” as Green Lantern’s Guy Gardner, along with Isabela Merced who will play Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi, who will play Mister Terrific, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
The trio joins a growing cast for James Gunn’s DC reboot that stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
Gardner was introduced in Green Lantern (Vol. 2) #59 by John Broome and Gil Kane. Gardner was initially a second-rate Green Lantern who was passed over in favor of Hal Jordan. Xolo Maridueña is discovering a whole new skill set in the new trailer for Blue Beetle, which shows his character, Jaime Reyes, coming to terms with the alien suit of armor he must learn to control.
Blue Beetle is based on the DC Comics character and hails from Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer penned the script.
Maridueña’s Blue Beetle is particularly notable, as he will be one of the few holdover characters to be part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming DC Universe. Gunn and Safran are plotting an entirely new slate after taking over as DC Studios co-bosses in November, with their first film set to be Superman: Legacy (due out in July 2025). Though Blue Beetle was made as part of the previous regime’s plans, Gunn has said that this version of the character will continue on.

Jaime Reyes faces off against villain Conrad Carapax aka The Indestructible Man in the final trailer to “Blue Beetle,” released Tuesday.
Landing in theaters Aug. 18, “Cobra Kai” breakout and fan favorite Xolo Maridueña stars in the title role of Jaime Reyes in “Blue Beetle,” DC Studios’ first superhero movie centered on a Latino character.
Carapax is a humanoid-insectoid creature with a tough exoskeleton that gives him incredible strength and durability. Carapax has the ability to generate powerful energy blasts from his hands, which he uses to devastating effect in battle. He is also a skilled hand-to-hand combatant and strategist, making him a dangerous opponent for Jaime.
Previously, the film’s first trailer captured Reyes’ transformation from a daydreaming teenager to an unexpected hero with great responsibility. Maridueña previously described “Blue Beetle” as a combination of both a DC and Marvel superhero.

Earlier, the star of Blue Beetle, Xolo Maridueña, was wise not to put the cart before the horse in regard to the character’s standing as a franchise as he wanted to wait to see how the movie does, “If we get one movie or a trilogy and f*cking fold this into the Justice League shit, we’re ready for the whole nine. For me and Angel [Manuel Soto, director] and the team, we kicked ass with this movie. It just depends on numbers.“. However, it was a little murky on which regime of the DC film universe the origin story would fall under. The new head of DC at Warner Bros., James Gunn, recently appeared on the Inside of You podcast with Smallville‘s Michael Rosenbaum and has confirmed that Blue Beetle will be the first character in his DC universe.

Before the full-on universe reboot that is headed up by James Gunn and Peter Safran makes its debut, the former DC film world still has a few movies on its slate. The Flash will finally be making its way into theaters this week, and we’ll see if the early buzz on it will match its success. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to release later this year. However, in between these films, there will also be a big-screen adaptation of a lesser-known DC superhero in Blue Beetle. Blue Beetle may not exactly be a marquee name, but the character dates back to the 1930s with the brand.

Dating back to the 1930s, Blue Beetle is one of DC’s most venerable superheroes. But aside from a single episode of Smallville, he’s never made it to the screen in live action… until now. Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña stars as Jaime Reyes, a directionless college graduate who develops unpredictable powers after inadvertently bonding with the Scarab — an ancient relic of alien biotechnology — and being gifted with an incredible symbiotic suit of armour. The trailer, released in April, managed to simultaneously conjure vibes of Spider-Man, Iron Man and the Spy Kids franchise, and this first Blue Beetle movie may not be the last.

Actress and recording artist Becky G has joined DC’s upcoming “Blue Beetle” in a crucial role, she announced on her social media on Monday.
The singer is voicing the Scarab, an alien-created artificial intelligence that gives superpowers to Blue Beetle, played by “Cobra Kai” breakout and fan favorite Xolo Maridueña.
In the DC Comics, Scarab has been passed down through several of the heroes who have operated as Blue Beetle. Designed to bond symbiotically with its host, the Scarab can provide a wide range of abilities, including enhanced strength, durability, and energy projection. However, it also has a mind of its own and can sometimes take control of its host, leading to conflicts and challenges for the Blue Beetle.

It remains to be seen whether Blue Beetle will have a place in the new DC Universe, but star Xolo Maridueña is already prepared to return for a sequel.

The film stars Cobra Kai lead Xolo Mariduena, George Lopez, and Susan Sarandon. This is the first time the Blue Beetle has been adapted to live-action. The DC Universe is in a period of flux right now. This year, Warner Bros. is releasing the final films produced under the old regime, including "The Flash" and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." Meanwhile, the new regime at DC Studios, headed up by James Gunn and Peter Safran, are gearing up for a full-blown reboot (even if they don't want to call it a reboot), which kicks off in 2025 with Gunn's "Superman: Legacy." Caught somewhere in the middle? "Blue Beetle."
Recently, the first trailer for the long-awaited "Blue Beetle" film surfaced online. Save for a line about Batman, it was pretty much allowed to exist on its own terms, with "Cobra Kai" star Xolo Maridueña bringing Jaime Reyes to life in live-action for the first time. The film is clearly positioned as an origin story, and very much looks like it's going to be divorced from the larger DC Universe.

The second trailer of “Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse,” the sequel to the animated masterpiece “Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse” (2018), has been released online, and along with the first trailer of DC’s “Blue Beetle,” releasing yesterday, it’s safe to say comic-book media fans are having a hell of a time. Another similarity the protagonists of these two movies, Miles Morales and Jaime Reyes, respectively, share is that they proudly represent their Latino heritage. Returning to “Across the Spider-verse,” which has two different versions of the second trailer released with a different beginning, we will discuss both in this brief analysis, and the rest of the trailer follows a similar narrative.

As with many superheroes, Blue Beetle has a long and varied publishing history. The original version of the character first appeared in the pages of Fox Comics' "Mystery Men Comics" #1 way back in August of 1939, around the same time Superman and Batman were just gaining traction. That version of Blue Beetle gained superpowers by consuming special vitamin tablets. A second version of Blue Beetle was folded into DC Comics during its notorious Crisis on Infinite Earths event — Blue Beetle 2.0 was more like Iron Man, using technology and a super-powered suit to fight crime.
The most recent version of Blue Beetle -- the version that inspired the character in Angel Manuel Soto's upcoming feature film -- is a teenager named Jaime Reyes who chances into the possession of a mystical scarab that attaches to his body and grants him a "living" costume that adapts to protect him. Now that James Gunn and Peter Safran are steering DC's film output, the remaining Extended Universe outings can seem like dead ends shunted out more because they exist (except for tax write-off victim Batgirl and the other cancelled outings) rather than any feeling of excitement or future planning. But Blue Beetle, which was originally intended for HBO Max is still headed to cinemas, and the first trailer is online.
Starring Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña, the film brings the Jaime Reyes version of the story, this looks to be a blend of other superhero films Iron Man and Spider-Man, both of which it predates in comic form (the Blue Beetle concept has existed since the 1940s) with just a dash of Spy Kids. But with luck, it can carve out its own identity on the screen.

The hierarchy of the DC universe is changing, and no franchise or hero is safe, especially those with disappointing box office performances — I'm looking at you, "Shazam 2!" Before James Gunn's brand new DC universe officially starts, we still have a few leftover projects to figure out. One of them is "Blue Beetle," the first Latino solo superhero movie in live-action.
The story follows Jaime Reyes, a kid from El Paso who finds an alien scarab that gives him powers, but may also draw a lot of unwanted alien attention — and we are not talking about Superman.
This is one of the coolest things DC has in the works, one with cultural specificity and a young hero with teenage problems in addition to superhero stuff — which is even more promising now that Spider-Man is leaving that in favor of living alone in a crappy apartment with no family. Plus,...

Or at least, Jaime's uncle Rudy -- played by George Lopez -- does.
/Film's Jenna Busch attended a trailer launch event for "Blue Beetle," with director Angel Manuel Soto and star Xolo Maridueña in attendance. There, "Cobra Kai" star Maridueña spoke about the ways in which "Blue Beetle" may or may not intersect with the larger DC universe, particularly when it comes to Rudy's declaration that "Batman is a fascist."
"I can't reveal if more superheroes are mentioned, but the Batman one is obviously in the trailer," Maridueña shared,...
