David Mitchell leads new BBC crime drama Ludwig, and the first details of the show have landed.
David Mitchell has become a familiar face in UK comedy, whether trying to discern who’s telling the truth in Would I Lie To You? or as the uptight Mark Corrigan alongside long time comedy partner Robert Webb in Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain’s Peep Show.
He also took on the role of William Shakespeare in Ben Elton’s sitcom Upstart Crow, and reprised the role for a stage adaptation that opened in 2020 and then again when the play was restaged in 2022
Just as Alan Davies took a left turn from stand-up comedy to drama in David Renwick’s superb Jonathan Creek, Mitchell is now moving into the realm of crime drama to play the title role in six part BBC series Ludwig.
The synopsis reads as follows:
When John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor’s (David Mitchell) identical twin,...

We celebrate the work of M.R. James, whose eerie ghost stories were made into a festive tradition by the BBC...
A shadow lurking just beyond the edge of the vision. Dusty manuscripts bearing fragments of ancient testimony, conflicting and confounding. The sickening touch of a decayed hand, grasping at us from the darkness. The imagery of the ghost story may differ between cultures, but the sense of creeping dread left by the most effective tales remains universal.

The last full series of Jonathan Creek, back in 2014, divided critics and audience; at the time our own reviewer complained that the central mysteries lacked the intricacy and peril of previous instalments, and there was a feeling that the spark had gone out of the show ever since Creek put away his duffel coat and moved out of the windmill.

Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence on a spaceship with Michael Sheen serving the drinks. We take a look at the sci-fi romance, Passengers...
It’s not a very scintillating title, Passengers, is it? Especially for a film about a kilometre-long ship hurtling through space with the two romantic leads trapped inside it. Love’s Labour's Lost In Space might have suited it better, had Futurama not beaten screenwriter Jon Spaihts to the punch by about 17 years. So Passengers it is: the latest film from Norwegian director Mortum Tyldum, who previously brought us the superb Jo Nesbo-adapted thriller Headhunters and Oscar-nominated Alan Turing drama, The Imitation Game.

Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s Inside No. 9 festive special The Devil Of Christmas (Tuesday the 27th of December, 10pm, BBC Two) is top of our must-watch list. Hot on its heels is Yonderland’s family friendly Yonder Yuletide (Saturday the 24th of December, 6.30pm, Sky One). The mystery drama series - which aired from 1997 to 2004 - was one of the BBC's most popular shows and the main star of the show has revealed there's a possibility of a comeback as the writer ''hasn't killed off Jonathan''. Richard Wilson has told Digital Spy that the BBC have talked to him about starring in a sitcom.
The actor, who is most famous for roles in Merlin and One Foot in the Grave, said that he wasn't sure whether the project would go ahead.
Wilson told DS: "I wouldn't mind considering another sitcom. The BBC have talked about me coming back to do something, but I don't know whether that will happen.
"The trouble with One Foot in the Grave was it was so well-written by David Renwick, it's very hard to find something as good as that."
Wilson is currently fronting ITV's Richard Wilson's On the Road, in which he tours the UK in his vintage car using Shell Guides that were first published in the 1930s.

In America, Halloween is a fun day, an excuse for a party and a close third behind Thanksgiving and Christmas when it comes to annual celebrations. In Britain, it's more a case of shutting your curtains and hoping that the kids down the road don't egg your windows.
But that negative approach to Halloween needs to end now. What we lack in pumpkins and parties, we can make up for with an evening of hiding under the duvet with scary TV shows.
While there might not be much actual horror programming on October 31 (although a new series of Citizen Khan on BBC One is frightening us in a different way), a quick delve into the world of Netflix (other streaming services are available, yadda, yadda) means that there are frights and thrills on tap for anyone who wants to get into the spooky spirit of things.

Jonathan Creek concludes its fifth series with a satisfying, comic noodle-scratcher...
This review contains spoilers.
5.3 The Curse Of The Bronze Lamp
After a disappointing start to the new series, Jonathan Creek seemed to return to form last week in The Sinner And The Sandman with a much more recognisable setup with one key mystery to solve. Despite not being the most exciting of mysteries, nor one of the most bloodthirsty; The Sinner and The Sandman certainly turned in some great performances, notably from John Bird. Alan Davies seemed more enthusiastic in the role as the eponymous hero and the whole setup felt a lot less perilous with far fewer contrived jokes or plot points.

Jonathan Creek's latest series came to a conclusion tonight (March 14) with 'The Curse Of The Bronze Lamp'. But has Alan Davies's magical magician lost some of his old charm?
In recent years, the show has been reduced to hit-and-miss specials and the latest three-episode run from writer David Renwick has picked up some of the programme's worst ever reviews from fans and critics.
The ratings are still solid, but not spectacular, and there's a growing sense that the show may have reached its sell-by-date. The opening episode of the current series, 'The Letters Of Septimus Noone', poked fun at the success of Sherlock with a spoof Benedict Cumberbatch-style character making a hash of a mystery.
Creek in its prime could have got away with such a gag - Sherlock is sometimes a bit pompous and the show is due a send-up. If Creek was still at its witty,...

Jonathan Creek star Alan Davies has spoken out about cuts to the show's budget.
The actor - who has appeared in the title role since 1997 - admitted that the BBC programme's budget is "really squeezed".
He told The Sun: "The budgets on Creek are really squeezed. One of the films we made recently was set in a country house and [show creator] David Renwick had to write into the script that the house had been mothballed while a family was away overseas.
"That meant the design department didn't have to decorate any rooms. We could put sheets on furniture."
In addition to script rewrites, Davies revealed that the production team cut costs by shooting at night.
"We do lots of scenes at night so it's in the dark and the viewer can't see we haven't had the money to dress it," he said.
Davies added that he is regularly asked where Creek's iconic windmill home has gone.

The Clue of the Savant's Thumb
After a three year hiatus, the duffle coat-wearing illusionist-cum-super sleuth returned to our screens for a ninety-minute Easter special entitled The Clue of The Savant’s Thumb. Only he wasn’t wearing a duffle coat, and he isn’t an illusionist anymore. Hang on, am I watching the correct programme? The Clue of the Savant's Thumb
After a three year hiatus, the duffle coat-wearing illusionist-cum-super sleuth returned to our screens for a ninety-minute Easter special entitled The Clue of The Savant’s Thumb. Only he wasn’t wearing a duffle coat, and he isn’t an illusionist anymore. Hang on, am I watching the correct programme? Joey Ross, once again played by the brilliant Sheridan Smith, is similarly baffled to discover that Creek has hung up his trademark coat (literally, we discover), married Polly (Sarah Alexander), and become the head honcho at a city advertising firm.

Happy Easter, everybody! Today may be the only day where you can get away with overdosing on wonderful, chocolatey things, but happily there's some equally delicious telly treats to enjoy, without guilt, over the entire week.
Yes, the next seven days sees not only the return of Game of Thrones and Jonathan Creek, but also the sure-to-be-thrilling conclusion of The Walking Dead's third season. And of course no Tube Talk rundown would be complete without a mention of the latest Doctor Who episode.
'The Rings of Akhaten' (Saturday, April 6 at 6.15pm on BBC One) sees the Doctor (Matt Smith) and new assistant Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) on a day trip with a dark twist when they go to check out a festival on the rings of a faraway planet.

We spoke to wonderful TV writer David Renwick about bringing back Jonathan Creek, scrapped sitcoms, One Foot in the Grave and more...
Working in television writing since the seventies, and with a string of well-loved hits behind him including Not the Nine O'Clock News, One Foot in the Grave, and of course, Jonathan Creek, we spoke to David Renwick about bringing Creek back to the BBC, walking away from projects, and killing off Victor Meldrew...
So onto Jonathan Creek, first of all I was going to ask you about the three other episodes that have been announced for later this year...
Hopefully, hopefully.
Hopefully? Is it still dependant on something?
Well it might not happen if I fail to write something good. I shouldn’t be spreading doom and gloom and doubt and insecurities, although that’s my role! We hope to go into...

Jonathan Creek is finally back - but he's not quite the man we once knew! The amateur investigator has moved out of his windmill, discarded his duffle coat and taken an office job in the big city - but surely he can't resist the lure of a good mystery when his old partner Joey Ross (Sheridan Smith) comes calling?
Digital Spy and other journalists spoke to Creek himself - actor and comedian Alan Davies - about the character's long-awaited return in new Easter special, 'The Clue of the Savant's Thumb'...
So Jonathan's changed a lot since we last saw him...
"He's got this brilliant mind and he's monetising that, as they say - he's got the suit on, got the corner office. He's got a new love interest (played by Sarah Alexander) - she's very good-looking and he's possibly punching above his weight, but we won't go into that...

We chatted to Sheridan Smith about her return to Jonathan Creek on Easter Monday in The Clue Of The Savant's Thumb...
In the lead up to the Jonathan Creek Easter Special The Clue of The Savant’s Thumb, I was privileged to have the chance to sit down and chat to the stars of the episode, Alan Davies, Sheridan Smith and Rik Mayall, along with the creator of Jonathan Creek; David Renwick. Despite all involved being very careful not to give any integral plot points or twists away; for a long-standing Jonathan Creek fan like me, it was a real treat to be able to hear about the close knit bond between cast and crew, along with the crucial thought process that goes behind creating some of the most elaborate and baffling tricks and mysteries on television.

Sheridan Smith also returns as Jonathan's partner Joey Ross, while the special's guest cast includes Joanna Lumley - playing Rosalind Tartikoff - and Rik Mayall, reprising his role of Di Gideon Pryke from 1998 episode 'Black Canary'.

Three more Creek episodes are currently in the works and will shoot in the autumn, for a planned 2014 airdate.

Jonathan Creek will return to BBC One on Easter Monday at 8.30pm, star Alan Davies has confirmed.
Davies will be back in the title role, with Sheridan Smith reprising her part as fellow investigator Joey Ross. The 90-minute episode is titled 'The Clue of the Savant's Thumb'.
Speaking at the Royal Television Society Awards last night, Smith told Digital Spy: "It's lovely to be back together. It's always the same cast and crew and we've also got Rik Mayall and Joanna Lumley this time. It's like having an old family back together."
Davies and writer David Renwick recently confirmed that a full three-episode mini-series of the drama has been commissioned by the BBC and will begin filming in the autumn.
However, Smith isn't currently sure she'll be able to take part in the miniseries because of theatre commitments.

Jonathan Creek and One Foot in the Grave creator David Renwick has revealed that he "walked off" a new ITV series one month into pre-production.
Renwick's six-part comedy Ergo would have focused on the relationship between a young man and his mother-in-law, but the writer revealed that he departed the project after becoming "disenchanted with the notes coming down".
"I walked off a month into pre-production," he explained. "I thought, this is it - life's too short."
Renwick explained that while he offered ITV the chance to buy and rewrite his original scripts, the channel ultimately decided to "junk [the series] altogether".
"I did actually offer to sell them the scripts. because we were a month into pre-production - the director was on board, we'd been auditioning, locations were being scouted and money had been spent by ITV Studios," he said.
The award-winning writer was speaking at a press event for a new Jonathan Creek special,...

We may all remember him for sitcoms such as The Good Life – but his career encompassed everything from Doctor Who to Shakespeare. And who can forget the classic Roobarb?
With more than 50 years of work to his name, Richard Briers was one of the most instantly recognisable – and most beloved – actors in Britain. Much of this is down to his sitcom work, primarily The Good Life. Although it only ran for three years, The Good Life managed to latch onto a prevailing public mood – that of suburban alienation and a desire to connect with the earth – which is why it has been so endlessly repeated (and used as the basis for more than one reality show) over the years. Despite being the work he'll be most remembered for, Briers never got on with his character, often calling him stubborn and unlikable in the press.
There was much more to Briers's...

One minute there's a Christmas present. The next minute it's taken away from you. Presumably, the sizeable army of Jonathan Creek fans found this when rumours of a 2012 Christmas special recently surfaced on the web. Alas, it turned out to be a false hope, since the main man himself Alan Davies said that the news was no more than a rumour and that nothing had been set up to compete alongside Time Lord festivities, Brucie's frosty-looking wig and Scrooge-esque happenings in Albert Square.
So what is it about Jonathan Creek that still brings the viewers back for more? The last Christmas special, The Grinning Man (broadcast in 2009) gained nearly 10 million viewers, a strong showing for the festive competition, suggesting that there was still a healthy demand for the unassuming fellah in the duffle coat. Basically, for the most part, it's a two-pronged mystery. Not only can it feature whodunnit elements,...

The last time I was at the Odeon in Leicester Square, it was with my dad to see Elizabeth: The Golden Age. He won’t thank me for telling you this, but at the time he had drunk somewhat more than a bottle of plonk and was, shall we say, ‘getting into’ the movie. By the time the Spanish Armada had set sail, Mr Kirby was behaving like a spectator at a particularly rowdy football match, whooping and cheering as Spanish galleons sank and rather passionately imploring Clive Owen to kick some paella-eating arse.
Tonight’s premiere of Tamara Drewe was a rather more sedate affair (in fact, other than location, that tale has nothing to do with the premiere; it’s just an anecdote I like to tell whenever the slightest opportunity arises). Cast, crew and various ‘slebs’ turned up, despite iffy weather and tube strikes, to walk themselves down the red carpet,...

LONDON -- Producer Verity Lambert, who made the original Doctor Who series, will pick up this year's Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Women In Film And Television awards here.
Lambert is scheduled to pick up the award, sponsored by Working Title Films, for her "outstanding contribution to the film and television industry" at the ceremony held Dec. 7 in central London.
Lambert "has conspicuously promoted women on both sides of the camera, and has been at the top of her profession for more than forty years. Verity is an inspiration for us all," said Sophie Balhetchet, chair of Women in Film and Television.
For her part, Lambert said she was thrilled to receive the nod, "especially as I feel very fortunate to have worked with some of the most talented people in the country."
In a career spanning more than four decades, Lambert's credits span Doctor Who in 1963 to the BAFTA and Royal Television Society-winning Rock Follies in 1976. She most recently worked with writer David Renwick on Love Soup, a second series of which will air on BBC1 in early 2008.
