Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.
It used to be we worried about the threat of artificial intelligence in movies like Colossus: The Forbin Project or “The Ultimate Computer” episode of Star Trek. Today, though, artificial intelligence is here thanks to Siri and Cortanna and their cousins. We talk to our phones and they answer back and these bots are growing increasingly sophisticated. As a result, what seemed ahead of its time a mere give years ago is looking increasingly prescient.
CBS’ Person of Interest arrived on September 22, 2011 and came with a fine pedigree having been created by Jonathan Nolan with J.J. Abrams on board as Executive Producer. It starred Michael Emerson, hot off Lost, Jim Caviezel, a pre-Empire Taraji P. Henson, and Kevin Chapman. It received near universal acclaim...

Belated thoughts on last week's Person of Interest series finale (which aired during my vacation) coming up just as soon as I've learned the secret of life and then forgotten it... "I've been trying to save the world for so long, saving one life at a time seemed anti-climactic. But then I realized, sometimes one life is the right life. It's enough." -Reese "Return 0" had everything I had hoped for from the series' penultimate episode but didn't quite get: stakes, grandeur, and a real sense of finality. Obviously, the last episode of a show has some advantages in those areas, particularly that last one, but where ".Exe" seemed to be racing to wrap up as much material about Samaritan (particularly with Harold's use of a previously undiscussed super virus to solve most of Team Machine's problems) as possible before CBS realized the show was still in production and tried to shut things down early,...

This week, CBS began the twice-weekly airing of the final 13 episodes of Person of Interest. The series is dark, compelling, and addresses many of the privacy and cyber-terrorism issues we’re wrestling with in our world. They just do it with an attractive cast and solve things every 60 minutes. Here’s the official word on the final season collection.

In the age of Peak TV, the quest for the instantly perfect can be the enemy of the eventually good. Once upon a time, the decision to commit to a TV show had as much to do with what it might become as what it was at the moment. Rare is the show that's a Hall of Famer right out of the box, so there's always been guesswork involved: Do I like this premise? These characters? Do the parts I enjoy seem likely to stay while the parts I don't disappear? What's the best possible version of this show, and what are the chances it actually becomes that? In those days, a patient viewer might have endured the early growing pains of shows like Seinfeld, Buffy, Parks and Recreation, or even Breaking Bad, and in time been rewarded by those shows transforming their potential energy into the actual, kinetic kind.

"Person of Interest" is an unsung hero -- the CBS sci-fi drama reigns among shows like "Friday Night Lights" and "Deadwood" as critically acclaimed, but criminally underseen television treasures. Thankfully, this fall it's coming to Netflix and to Wgn America as part of the "Prime Crime" lineup at the end of the month, which means that you should all really do yourselves a favor and enter Jonathan Nolan's rich, comic book-like world of heroes, villains and a highly trained, highly adorable Belgian Malinois named Bear. Read More: Michael Emerson on 'Person of Interest' Season 5, Amy Acker and The Machine In the likely case that you're not familiar with the show, "Person of Interest" premiered in 2011, starring Michael Emerson as reclusive billionaire genius Harold Finch, Jim Caviezel as burned CIA operative John Reese and an ensemble cast of supporting characters who work together to try and prevent crimes before they.

Funny things, spoilers. The very word carries a qualitative judgment – this is something that will spoil your enjoyment of the piece of art in question. And they’re ubiquitous; viewing habits are becoming ever more fractured, with some people still watching weekly live like it’s black and white times or something, some watching a season or so behind because of the Us-uk lag, some binge-watching on Netflix, some downloading scripts and directing their own versions in their mind palaces, and so on, making spoilers ever more difficult to avoid as a result. But while spoiler culture is thriving, with many forums and articles dedicated to the discussion thereof, there also seems to be a general consensus – insofar as there can be anything resembling a consensus on the Internet...

The Show | Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The Episode | “Melinda” (April 14)
The Performance | Too often in TV flashbacks, we’re served a marginally different version of a character we already know well. But on this week’s S.H.I.E.L.D., Wen had occasion to inhabit a distinct Melinda May – one who had not yet been dubbed “The Cavalry.”
In the early flashbacks, it was the little things Wen did to distinguish the past May from present. Beaming warmly at husband Andrew as they looked forward to (ahem) “family planning.” Reacting to a Coulson quip with an audible “heh.

Well, you can’t blame CBS, or the producers of “Person of Interest" for trying. Everyone else is jumping on the “Empire” tip to help boost their rating numbers. So it was reported today that Taraji P. Henson will, in fact, be returning to the series in her role of Joss Carter. "But wait a minute!!" I can hear you saying. "Wasn’t her character killed off?" She was indeed, which is why Henson will be returning to the show in the form of flashbacks involving a case that lead character John Reese (played by Jim Caviezel) is working on, that Carter was not able to solve. Yes, that is something of a cheat, but maybe it’ll attract some "Empire"...

One of the hallmarks of the modern era of television is an increased critical focus on the visual aspect of the medium. For years, when a film critic said a movie “looked like television,” they meant it as an insult. That statement implied that the film in question was shot in an entirely functional fashion, with a lack of creativity involved in the camerawork and shot choices. That stigma has dissolved over the last two decades, with the onset of the much-lauded golden age of television. Today, directors of photography like Michael Slovis and Chris Manley, best known for their work on Breaking Bad and Mad Men respectively, are doing work that rivals that of Hollywood’s top cinematographers. You can see the impact in the increased fluidity of the television and film spheres. Breaking Bad was able to bring successful movie director Rian Johnson over to TV, and Game of Thrones...

Fox is heading into comic-book territory with its new drama "Gotham." The new series follows the life of Detective Jim Gordon before he becomes commissioner, and includes the character of a young Bruce Wayne.
Fox head Kevin Reilly revealed at TCA winter press tour that "all the classic Batman characters" including the Riddler, the Penguin and the Joker will show up, and many of the show's episodes will just be about having origin stories for those villains. This season, CBS has moved Person of Interest to Tuesday nights. Will the ratings fall off as a result or will they grow because of a stronger lead-in? Let's wait and see.
On Person of Interest, former CIA officer John Reese (Jim Caviezel) and billionaire Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) continue to work together to prevent violent crimes in the Big Apple. Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Chapman, Sarah Shahi, and Amy Acker round out the cast.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually the next day, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest.
