JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way.
For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

Gravitas Ventures gave the shark thriller Deep Fear a VOD release in the United States and Canada on November 3rd, and the movie also received a release through the Netflix streaming service in Brazil earlier this month. If you haven’t taken a look at Deep Fear yet, we have a clip to share with you that might get you to give it a chance. The clip can be seen in the embed above and features a shark burying its face in a load of cocaine, bringing to mind this year’s earlier “nature run amok” release Cocaine Bear.
Directed by Marcus Adams (Long Time Dead) from a screenplay written by Robert Capelli Jr. (The Rules (for Men)) and Sophia Eptamentis (Invincible Summer), Deep Fear centers on Naomi, a yachtswoman embarking on a solo trip in the Caribbean. Her last stop is Grenada, where she plans to rendezvous with her boyfriend Jackson,...

David Fincher is one of the most important filmmakers of his generation – endlessly praised, shamelessly ripped off and somehow still undervalued (He still hasn’t won a Best Director Oscar).
His work conjures up darkened hallways, dogged detectives and crazed killers. The word “Fincherian” has come to describe something twisted and somehow beautiful. As an artist he frequently pushes the boundaries of what is possible technologically, while also playing with the comfort level of his audience. If it doesn’t feel a little bit dangerous, is it even a David Fincher movie?
With “The Killer,” in theaters now and on Netflix on November 10, Fincher takes us on another wild journey, this time alongside a sardonic hit man (Michael Fassbender). In celebration of “The Killer,” we thought we’d look back at his entire filmography. It’s a journey as dark and labyrinthine as anything the filmmaker could cook up.

If you subscribe to JoBlo Horror Originals (which you should!), you’ve probably caught our series 80’s Horror Movie Memories. In this show, we highlight all of our favourite horror movies from arguably the greatest decade for horror, with tons of very special guests. The decade started with a bang, with Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the first instalment in the Friday the 13th series, John Carpenter’s The Fog, and more. Check out our feature-length examination of 1980 here, but this week, we’re looking at 1981.
While some may think the year pales compared to 1980, they might be underestimating what’s a pretty significant year for horror. Arguably, one would call it the year of the werewolf, with the year dominated by the best werewolf movies of all time, John Landis’s An American Werewolf in London and Joe Dante’s The Howling. With the death of disco in 1979 and a demand for change, the 1980s evolved into a neon-soaked, totally rad decade held firm together with cans of “Aqua Net” burning a hole in the ozone. The time for free love and hope for peace was over. It was time for a revolution. But with filmmakers, their creative freedoms would lead to exploring more areas which haven’t been touched on before. It was the year horror would forever be changed.
In this special episode of 80s Horror Memories, we take a feature-length look at the year 1980 as a whole, taking deep dives into the influential horror flicks of the year. Here are the movies we profile:
Dressed to Kill: Brian DePalma’s controversial slasher, which, if anything, is even more provocative in 2023 than it was in 1980.
Maniac: William Lustig’s grimy thriller starring 80s horror icon Joe Spinell.

These last few years the Criterion Channel have made October viewing much easier to prioritize, and in the spirit of their ’70s and ’80s horror series we’ve graduated to––you guessed it––”’90s Horror.” A couple of obvious classics stand with cult favorites and more unknown entities (When a Stranger Calls Back and Def By Temptation are new to me). Three more series continue the trend: “Technothrillers” does what it says on the tin, courtesy the likes of eXistenZ and Demonlover; “Art-House Horror” is precisely the kind of place to host Cure, Suspiria, Onibaba; and “Pre-Code Horror” is a black-and-white dream. Phantom of the Paradise, Unfriended, and John Brahm’s The Lodger are added elsewhere.

The ’70s shocked you, the ’80s gored you . . . now the ’90s come in for the kill!
The Criterion Channel has announced this year’s Halloween spectacular, which “celebrates an era that saw terror undergo unsettling new transformations.”
The team previews, “In the ’90s, horror movies got bigger budgets, became playfully self-aware, and even won some Oscars—but they’re just as nasty as what came before.
“Featuring cult heroes like John Carpenter (In the Mouth of Madness) and Abel Ferrara (The Addiction) plunging the dark depths of their uncompromising visions, established auteurs like Francis Ford Coppola (Bram Stoker’s Dracula) taking on the genre, and new voices like Ernest R. Dickerson (Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight) and Antonia Bird (Ravenous) offering fresh perspectives on familiar tropes, this selection curated by Clyde Folley offers a hair-raising tour through an oft-overlooked decade in horror that’s ripe for rediscovery.”

Hey all! John Fallon here aka The Arrow. Our docu-series, Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian: 80’s Horror Memories (binge it here), which thoroughly explores the decade in horror, is now 15 episodes in. We just wrapped 1980, 1981 and 1982 and we are about to go in balls deep into 1983 this coming Monday, August 28 on our JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel.
A series of this ilk doesn’t happen by itself, it takes an army of producers, writers, editors and our sole narrator to make the magic happens. So we thought it would be dandy to get our core staff to share with you their 10 favorite (not best) horror movies from the 80’s. Yes, it was tough on all of us to pick just 10 – but we knocked a few back and did what we could. Scroll down and peep our choices!

“There’s nothing the matter with the instrument, it’s the body. The woman’s body is all wrong!”
We’ve discussed how vulnerable it can be to be under the bright lights of the dentist’s chair but how about the doctor, particularly a specialty doctor that’s job is to deal with our most private of parts. David Cronenberg is the master of turning our bodies into horrible things that seek to hurt us, perfecting the use of the term “body horror”. So, what happens when Cronenberg makes a movie about twin gynecologists that begin to lose their grip on reality, and did you know that this is actually based on true events?...

A year and a half has gone by since we heard that Second Sight Films had tracked down the original camera negative for the 1986 classic The Hitcher (watch it Here), which would allow them to do a full restoration and a 4K release. Now Second Sight has shared an update on the status of the 4K restoration, complete with a quote from director Robert Harmon!

Thanks to everyone for dedication way beyond anything I could ever have hoped for.” Second Sight added that, “We’re thrilled at Robert’s reaction and owe a huge thanks for his time and supervision. Nearing end of the grading stage, a final session with Robert being scheduled soon. Release / Pre-order date Tbc.”

“With the death of disco in 1979 and a demand for change, the 1980s evolved into a neon-soaked totally rad decade held firm together with cans of “Aqua Net” burning a hole in the ozone. Time for free love and hope for peace was over. It was time for a revolution. But with filmmakers, their creative freedoms would lead to explore more areas which haven’t been touched on before. It’s time for a new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show, and in this one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are digging into the 1990 thriller Blue Steel (get it Here). To find out what they had to say about the movie, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who crafted the screenplay with her Near Dark co-writer Eric Red, Blue Steel has the following synopsis: When rookie cop Megan Turner kills a convenience store robber, she does not notice when psychopathic commodities trader Eugene Hunt takes the dead man’s gun. With no weapon at the crime scene, the police hold Turner accountable for killing an unarmed man. Meanwhile, Hunt uses the stolen weapon to go on a killing spree. Turner teams up with detective Nick Mann to clear her name and catch the killer. An unexpected romance complicates matters.

Check it out, and let us know if you have any suggestions for movies to watch on Valentine’s Day!
The Mummy (1932)
While future entries in Universal’s Mummy franchise would (until the more recent reboots) present the character as a bandage-wrapped monster that likes to strangle people and carry women around, Karl Freund’s 1932 version of The Mummy allowed the legendary Boris Karloff to give more of a performance in the title role. Ditching his bandages after being released from his tomb,...

The feature debut of both screenwriter Eric Red (Bad Moon, Near Dark) and director Robert Harmon withstands time for many reasons. The road thriller offers exhilarating action sequences, an intense cat-and-mouse chase that spans the entire film, nasty deaths, and a unique relationship between the protagonist and antagonist. It’s the latter that transforms a well-executed thriller into something remarkable. […]...

January’s home media releases are ending on a high note, as there are a bunch of great titles headed to Blu-ray and DVD this week. My very favorite film of 2019, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite is making its debut on both formats, and if you missed it in theaters last year, Terminator: Dark Fate is hitting multiple formats as well.
For those of you who dig totally bananapants filmmaking, Tammy and the T-Rex is being released this week courtesy of Vinegar Syndrome. Vs is also keeping busy with Berserker, Beyond the Door 3, and Unmasked Part 25, and Scream Factory is bringing home Body Parts, Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, as well as a Steelbook Edition of The Slumber Party Massacre, too.
Arrow Video has put together a special edition release of Edge of the Axe, and the Warner Archive Collection is showing some love to the criminally underseen Two on a Guillotine.

The early 1990s was still the 1980s, really. Not just in terms of music, but clothes and films, too. Bombastic touches in special effects as well as in storytelling often went along with pleated pants, stonewashed jeans, shoulder pads, and other questionable wardrobe items. The point is, if you like crazy '80s films, there were plenty to be found in the early '90s, such as the Eric Red (Bad Moon) film, Body Parts. Starring Jeff Fahey, Body Parts is the story of Bill, an even-keeled criminal psychologist who badly wants to "just heal someone." Not long after speaking to an off-kilter criminal on death row, Bill is involved in a horrific accident on the freeway in which he loses his right arm....

One of my all-time favorite horror events was experiencing a live performance of Tales from Beyond the Pale at the Overlook Film Festival in 2016. Such an incredible amount of work is put into these horror audio dramas from the cast, sound engineer, and especially series creators Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid. If they announce any new live performances, it's absolutely worth your time to make a trip to see it, but they're giving horror fans the ability to listen to new horror audio dramas from the comfort of their home every week.

The passing of famed “Blade Runner” actor Rutger Hauer has prompted an outpouring of tributes from filmmakers, actors, and fans on Twitter, honoring a career highlighted by one of the most famous monologues in sci-fi history.

The Horror Equity Fund have announced the latest horror-related project they have fast-tracked: White Knuckle, from one of my favourite writer/directors Eric Red, who is also the author of the action-packed novel of the same name. White Knuckle tells a gripping story of female empowerment about a woman who survives an attack by a serial killer, and then takes it upon herself to stop him from hurting anyone else.
Perhaps best known as the creator of The Hitcher and Near Dark, and the writer/director of Cohen and Tate, Body Parts and Bad Moon, Red’s previous directorial effort, 2015′s Night of the Wild, has recently been released on iTunes. Says Red:

The Alien franchise has an interesting history not just because of the films that hit the big screen, but also because of the ones that did not. This is a look at some of the Alien films that came close to getting a greenlight, but were never made.
During the movie production process, it is not uncommon for a film to undergo several major changes in concept before becoming fully realized. The Alien franchise is one franchise that has seen its fair share of changes along the way. However, it is also unique due to the shear volume of potential films that have hit the drawing board but never progressed. Part of the reason for this is due to the fact that the Alien franchise has run into many different problems along the way.
