The Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen and new play Stereophonic, about a fictional band in the 1970s, led the Tony nominations with 13 nominations each.
The Outsiders, a musical based on the 1967 S.E. Hinton book, followed with 12 nominations and the revival of Cabaret, starring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, followed with nine nods.
With its 13 noms, Stereophonic set a record for the most Tony nominations for a play, surpassing previous record holder Slave Play’s 12 noms in 2020.
Stereophonic‘s surprisingly strong performance even included a best score nomination despite it being a play.
In the best musical category, Hell’s Kitchen and The Outsiders were nominated, alongside the dance-based show Illionise, with music from Sufjan Stevens’ album and a book by Justin Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury; Suffs, a musical about the women’s suffrage movement with a score and book by Shaina Taub; and Water for Elephants, based on the 2006 novel,...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for the Season 1 finale of “Diarra from Detroit” below.]
By the time the Season 1 finale of “Diarra from Detroit” draws to a satisfying conclusion, Diarra (and we) have been through a lot. And the episode brings the tangled mystery to such an adroit close (while leaving enough unanswered questions to fuel a second season) that surely its structure was always part of the show’s DNA.
Nah, that’s not how TV works. Luckily, co-showrunner and star Diarra Kilpatrick knows how to pivot.
“We didn’t have the budget to shoot Episode 8 as it was originally written and conceived,” Kilpatrick told IndieWire. “Sometimes creativity comes from limitations.”
Diarra’s reconciliation with Swa (Morris Chestnut) proves to be short-lived when she finally solves the mystery of why he abruptly asked for an open marriage (to misdirect her away from learning about the vasectomy he’d had years ago!). Burying her feelings once again with the case,...

Selena Gomez has seen her “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars and guest stars get nominated for and win Emmys the past two years while she sat on the sidelines. Will the third time finally be the charm? She’s currently in fifth place in the Best Comedy Actress odds. Given her previous snubs, you’d be justified to doubt her chances, but we’ve been through this before with a twice snubbed actress-singer who pulled through on her third try under very similar circumstances: Mandy Moore.
“This Is Us” was a breakout hit when it premiered in 2016 on NBC. In 2017, it earned 10 Emmy nominations for its freshman installment, including Best Drama Series and seven acting bids — but not for Moore in Best Drama Actress. It won two awards: Best Drama Actor for Sterling K. Brown, who prevailed over his TV dad Milo Ventimiglia, a surprise nominee, and Best Drama Guest Actor for Gerald McRaney,...

Diarra From Detroit is, at various points, a hard-boiled mystery, a quarter-life crisis comedy, a complicated love triangle (that’s occasionally a quadrangle), and an ensemble hangout show about a group of longtime friends. Some of these elements in theory make sense together — though in theory they should not all fit within the same series. But the reason Diarra, which debuted last week on the BET+ streaming service, is among this year’s most pleasant TV surprises is how much it all makes sense when you watch it.

“I come as one, I stand as 10,000,” Diarra Kilpatrick said through tears at the premiere of Diarra From Detroit in Los Angeles on Wednesday night as she thanked the cast, crew and executives at BET for their work in bringing her new series to life.
Premiering on BET+ on Thursday, the mystery comedy-drama created and executive produced by Kilpatrick is an emotional milestone for the writer and actress who grew up performing in theater in Detroit before moving to Los Angeles to further pursue her passion. “I think about the fact that in 2012 I used my tax return to make a web series,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s been a long journey, and I’m really grateful to all the people who have become a part of it, and I’m grateful to myself for being able to get to my dream.”

Jason Statham will be protecting his bees on the telly, as The Beekeeper’s Sky Cinema debut is now confirmed in the UK.
It’s been quite lovely to report on The Beekeeper this year in particular, the action thriller starring Jason Statham where The Stath, well, keeps bees. As we’ve written several times on this site already this year alone, it’s a really good movie, with The Statham back to the kind of in-camera action that he built his career up on.
Directed by David Ayer – who we spoke to for a podcast special here – there’s much to enjoy with The Beekeeper, and hopes are high for a sequel too. Its solid box office returns on a modest budget certainly help in that department.
In the UK, the film was released by Sky Cinema into UK cinemas in early January. Sky is giving its cinema released films a 45 day theatrical window.

The Beekeeper Worldwide Box Office Updates! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
After the unexpected failure of The Expendables 4, Jason Statham is back on the big screens to try his luck with The Beekeeper. And this time, he’s living beyond the expectations. The American action thriller film directed by David Ayer has crossed the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office. Below are all the details you need to know!
The Beekeeper hit the theatre screens on January 12, 2024. There remains little competition at the ticket windows, which is working in favor of this thriller flick. Of course, Timothee Chalamet’s blockbusters Wonka and Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom also continue to add footfalls. But they released back around December, so there is no comparison.

It has been nothing shy of an abysmal start at the box office this year. The first chunk of 2024 has been left largely devoid of big new releases (in no small part thanks to the strikes last year) and, as a result, ticket sales are down significantly. But director David Ayer and professional ass-kicker Jason Statham have stepped up to do their part as "The Beekeeper" has become the year's first true breakout hit. To that end, the action flicked passed the $100 million mark over the weekend, becoming the first new release of the year to do so.
"The Beekeeper" ended up topping the charts over the weekend with a $7.4 million haul, per Box Office Mojo. That is more of a commentary on the state of things as there were no new releases to entice audiences. So, we're left with a movie in its third weekend taking the top spot with a sub-$10 million total.

Truth be told, I had little to no interest in seeing The Beekeeper. While I love action films, I felt burnt out by Jason Statham’s most recent run of movies, including The Meg 2, Operation Fortune, and Expend4bles. My chief complaint about Statham was that he always played characters that were too perfectly tailored to his persona and that his fight scenes had become predictable, with him rarely facing off with an opponent that seemed like a credible threat. Thus, I had no qualms about assigning the review to one of our other critics, Tyler Nichols, who did a great job with his (positive) write-up. To be clear, don’t consider this a “review”. It’s more an an editorial.
So why did I bother seeing The Beekeeper if I thought I’d hate it and had no intention of reviewing it? Simple – I was bored on Saturday afternoon.

January is generally a quiet time at the box office as studios give their big Holiday hits some breathing room while also avoiding the massive draw that is the NFL playoffs. Last year at this time, the record breaking Avatar: The Way of Water was still riding high with a $20.1 million take in its sixth week while Puss in Boots: The Last Wish continued its epic run from a $12 million opening to a $186 million domestic finish. We even had a surprise horror hit with M3GAN entering her third week with just under $10 million while the Tom Hanks starring A Man Called Otto continued to see solid numbers for a drama aimed at adults.
This year sees this third weekend of January hit a bit of a snag with the remake/ Broadway adaptation Mean Girls landing in first place for a second week in a row with $11.7 million. That number represents a 59% drop off,...

David Ayer directed one of the most unexpectedly huge hits of the last decade with DC's "Suicide Squad" back in 2016. What happened after was an unfortunate mess that Ayer found himself caught in the middle of. Now though, the filmmaker finally gets to be on the right end of a theatrical success story as his latest film "The Beekeeper" has found life at the box office. With the help of Jason Statham and a ridiculous premise, Ayer now has his first theatrical hit since his divisive superhero blockbuster.
Even though it didn't top the charts (that honor belongs to the new "Mean Girls" musical), "The Beekeeper" opened to $16.5 million, with that total growing to $19 million when accounting for the Monday MLK holiday, per The Numbers. The film only made $4 million overseas thus far, bringing its total to $23 million, but it is still scheduled to open in many key markets in the coming weeks.

“Abbott Elementary” star and creator Quinta Brunson took home the Emmy for best actress in a comedy series on Monday night.
“I don’t even know why I’m so emotional. I think, like, the Carol Burnett of it all,” Brunson said, beginning to choke up at the top of her acceptance speech. Burnett, smiling at the remark, had presented the award — the second major prize of the evening.
“Thank you so much. I love making ‘Abbott Elementary’ so much. And I am so happy to be able to live my dream and act out comedy. I say that every time. I just love comedy so much. I’m so happy to be able to get this. I didn’t prepare anything, because I just didn’t think — oh god,” Brunson said, before continuing. “I love my mom, my dad, my sisters, my brothers, my entire family so much. I love my husband.

When it comes to action, I’ve always had an appreciation for Mr. Jason Statham. Even in a less-than-stellar flick, he’s always fun to watch. And thankfully, his latest brought the entertainment in a big way (our Eic loved it). The Beekeeper has terrific action and a lot of humor and it is skillfully directed by David Ayer with a script by Kurt Wimmer. If you are looking for an escape, this is the perfect movie to do it with. The impressive cast includes Josh Hutcherson, Jeremy Irons, Phylicia Rashad, Jemma Redgrave, and Minnie Driver.
Recently, I had a terrific time speaking with Mr. Ayer and Mr. Hutcherson. It was a thrill to talk to David as I’m an admirer of his work. He discussed taking on the project, and finding a little more of the funny this time around. As well, he spoke on the terrific work of Phylicia Rashad.

Jason Statham knows a thing or two about action movies, having starred in more than a few of them throughout his career, and he even schooled The Beekeeper director David Ayer when it comes to the genre.
“He schooled me,” David Ayer told /Film. “I mean, let’s be real: He’s an action icon, and he’s probably forgotten more about action than I know. He really raised my game. He really helped me get under the hood of, what is action? How does it work? And he has this encyclopedic knowledge of, like, literally every punch ever thrown on film. So when you present him with choreography, [he’ll say], ‘No, I did that in this movie, I saw that in this, I saw that in that.’ And then his sense of self and how he presents on camera is impeccable, and you have to support that and then build around that.

Plot: In The Beekeeper, one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers”.
Review: Over the last two decades, Jason Statham has built himself a nice little corner of the action genre. Whatever situation he’s put into, it’s almost a guarantee that he’ll kick some ass on his way out of it. This latest action outing sees Statham playing a Beekeeper; a man deadset on revenge after his friend is taken advantage of financially. One of the brilliant elements is how much of the heavy lifting for the film is done in such simplified ways. Want to set up a villain that the entire audience will hate? Well here are some bad guys who take money from vulnerable old people. The perfect people to want to see get their comeuppance.

Man of action Jason Statham is back and this time he’s got bees with him in the action/revenge film The Beekeeper.
Statham stars as Adam Clay, a quiet honey farmer renting space from elderly, retired teacher Eloise Parker (Phylicia Rashad) who also happens to be his only friend. When Parker receives an alert on her computer that it has a virus, she calls the number on her screen, which connects her to the United Data Group company. David Ayer’s The Beekeeper buzzes into theaters today, and to celebrate the occasion, the Suicide Squad director shared a new poster for the action film starring Jason Statham online. If you have Melissophobia, I recommend you click away from this article now because the new poster features Statham’s clenched fist and forearm crawling with winged honey generators. Statham grips a set of golden brass knuckles in his fist while a bee delicately walks along the metal guard.

When a kindly old woman loses everything, her friendly neighborhood honey farmer strikes out on a brutal campaign of violent vengeance in David Ayer’s latest blast of hyperkinetic action, The Beekeeper. The film finds Jason Statham in his element as Adam Clay, the least unassuming apiarist of all time, with not only a passion for maintaining the hive, but also muscles for days and a very particular set of skills. The sudden scamming of his neighbor Eloise Parker, a blissfully genteel Phylicia Rashad, out of her entire life’s savings and then some, hits her hard enough that Clay feels the need to make sure it never happens to anyone ever again. In order to do so, he’s going to have to take down the slimy...

By now, Jason Statham’s fans expect his movies to have a generous dose of over-the-top action sequences, with little regard for the creativity (or even coherence) of the plot. Ka-ching! The Beekeeper stirs up plenty of adrenaline in a standard story line that sets up a whole lot of Statham at his Statham-est.
There’s a bit of John Wick in the premise of The Beekeeper. Statham is a retired super-secret, super-skilled government agent, trying to live quietly, just tending to his titular hives. He rents space from a kind, elderly lady (Phylicia Rashad), who promptly gets conned out of all her savings and $2 mil from a charity she helps manage by a multi-million dollar internet scamming operation. Spoiler Alert: This article discusses mild plot points in the new movie “The Beekeeper.”
David Ayer’s new film “The Beekeeper” is an action movie extravaganza that’s reminiscent of the best Schwarzenegger and Stallone flicks of the ’80s. Jason Statham stars as Adam Clay, a man who seeks vengeance on the call center that scams one of his friends (played by Phylicia Rashad). Unfortunately for the criminals, led by nepo baby tech bro Derek Danforth (Josh Hutcherson), Statham has a secret past that makes him an ass-kicking machine.
Ayer and Hutcherson broke down our burning questions about this blood and honey-soaked extravaganza.
Why did you want to take on “The Beekeeper” as your next action movie?
David Ayer: It was an opportunity to work with Jason. The script itself had the magic elements, like a story that has amazing twists and a sense of heart that is hard to find in these movies.

We all have the inherent understanding that our lives are part of a larger system, an infrastructure that's not only the one humanity has constructed for itself but the one that's existed for many more thousands of years: the natural ecosystem of the planet that we live on. However, it seems that our goal as human beings has been to implicitly make our lives more relaxed, more convenient, and more catered to our every whim, with little care or understanding for how it affects everything around us.
Case in point: the honey bee. While it's general knowledge that bees are a vital part of our ecosystem and their populations are declining (due in large part to climate change), it's also true that not enough is being done to help stop it. The action genre, when boiled down to its core essence, is about overcoming injustice: whether action heroes are on...

The actor stays in the same lane to play a trained killer taking down the bad guys in David Ayer’s enjoyably silly time-waster
If you’re not in the market for what David Ayer is forcefully selling in batty January thriller The Beekeeper at the point when someone says to the titular character, “To bee or not to bee, that is the bloody question,” then you might as well just give up and walk out. By this stage, late in the film, Ayer and screenwriter Kurt Wimmer have given us just about enough bee puns, bone cracks and bizarre cameos from British actors to give those in the right headspace (read: drunk) a solid, low-stakes, medium-reward new year’s effort. I can’t imagine a devoted Beekeeper hive emerging any time soon (it’s far too derivative and far too rough around the edges), but there’s enough energy...

You can add The Beekeeper to the long list of action movies named for the jobs their protagonist took up after laying down their weapons and trying to live a peaceful life: The Gardener, The Painter, The Bricklayer… etc, etc. Actually Adam Clay always was a beekeeper, that was the name of the elite unit he was a part of before he retired to actually raise bees. He does this on a farm owned by Eloise Parker somewhere in a very confused part of England that wants us to believe it’s actually Western Massachusetts.
Eloise, who is supposed to be a retired teacher and should know better, falls for one of those computer scams that says you have a virus and to call this number to have it removed.

You do not hire Jason Statham to read love poems onscreen, or to weep gently at the sight of nuzzling puppies, or to gaze thoughtfully at a particularly breathtaking sunset. You hire the Derbyshire native to kick ass and take names, with the “names” part being optional. The cinematic missing link between Bruce Willis and Charles Bronson, Statham has been keeping a certain type of genre film alive for close to two decades. He’s not the last action hero standing — his Hobbs & Shaw partner Dwayne Johnson continues to flirt with big,...

It’s the time of year for smooth-brained relaxation. Moviegoers can recover from the holidays with the comfort of knowing Gerard Butler, Liam Neeson, or Jason Statham will be here to satisfy their mid-budget, action-programmer needs. Is it really the new year if one of those cherished Kings of January doesn’t appear on the release slate? There’s no Gerry or Liam, but the ever-reliable Statham dons a trucker hat and blue jeans to grit his way through David Ayer’s The Beekeeper, an overall valiant, occasionally fun attempt to take us out of Q1 doldrums.

An old-style Jason Statham film, with a bit of beekeeping? The movie year is off to a fine start. Here’s our The Beekeeper review.
I’m not familiar with just what inspired action thriller The Beekeeper, but never in my wildest dreams did I imagine a film that actually delivered on its title. An action thriller, with Jason Statham as a man who keeps bees?
Surely nobody would offer up a gift like that.
Well, chums, not only have they done so, but they’ve also delivered one of the best pure Jason Statham action films in some time.
It opens with some serious-looking academic stuff about bees playing under the opening credits, so I got the sense it might commit to its moniker. Then, early on, The Statham sincerely delivers the line “I just want to thank you for putting up with me… and all of my bees”.

Chad Stahelski and David Leitch's 2014 film "John Wick" instantly became totemic, casting a long shadow and impacting the way action filmmakers approached their craft. Over the past decade, we've seen the American action movie conform to that style, favoring hard-hitting hand-to-hand combat, more visually dynamic fight choreography, and longer shots that better highlight the action taking place (contrasted with the edit-a-fight-to-bits approach of Paul Greengrass's acolytes from the prior generation). "The Beekeeper," written by genre stalwart Kurt Wimmer and directed by David Ayer, adopts those elements as well — but it goes a step further than most "Wick" riffs and incorporates what really makes that franchise stand out: world-building. There's a unique mythology at play here, elevating the movie to a heightened reality beyond our own.

“The Beekeeper” is the best kind of bad movie — which is to say, it’s the sort that puts entertainment ahead of pretentiousness, embracing the laughter sure to accompany such an unapologetically stupid, ultra-violent premise. Starring Jason Statham in what feels like a parody of Jason Statham movies, this conspiracy-fueled action showcase tortures its central metaphor until it can only be seen as a joke, featuring the “Transporter” star as ruthless, retired government assassin-turned-benevolent beekeeper Adam Clay, who’s pushed back into berserker mode after a phishing attack targets the kindly old woman from whom he rents a barn.
If you don’t get a hearty belly laugh out of watching Statham scowl his way through the opening montage, in which Clay is shown collecting honey and tending his hives on a bucolic country estate while landlady Eloise (Phylicia Rashad) falls for a blatantly fishy online scam, then “The Beekeeper” is probably not for you.

If you were concerned there wouldn’t be enough unsubtle apiculture metaphors for meting out justice via hellacious ass-whooping in The Beekeeper, you can relax. Even if director David Ayer remains in his usual mode of glowering self-seriousness, whenever Jason Statham snarls about “protecting the hive” or “smoking out the hornets” or “killing the queen,” you get an inkling of how much fun this violent revenge thriller might have been in more playful hands. Still, watching the bullet-headed action star take down squads of government agents and thuggish mercenaries alike, mostly while unarmed, is fun enough. Probably even more so in Imax.
In a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer that’s nothing if not literal, Statham plays Adam Clay, a retired field operative from a top-secret national security force designed to step in and restore order whenever some nefarious criminal situation gets out of hand. Even though he’s no longer a “Beekeeper,...

Bee-related puns and metaphors are the order of the day in David Ayer’s The Beekeeper. For all the specificity in these half-hearted stabs at humor and thematic resonance, including a groan-worthy reference to a certain soliloquy from Hamlet, the world of the film is unduly nebulous. It’s not unlike a partially completed sketch whose occasional flashes of color only serve to remind us how incomplete and lazily constructed the rest of it is.
Take the film’s hero, Adam Clay (Jason Statham), a simple beekeeper trying to enjoy his early retirement by making honey in the barn of the older woman, Eloise (Phylicia Rashad), who takes care of him. Clay’s affinity toward the woman, who’s ostensibly just his landlord, is easy enough to overlook, and his extreme reaction to her suicide after she’s scammed out of her retirement money and $2 million of charity money she...

Here’s the beautiful thing about David Ayer’s “The Beekeeper,” which is essentially a “John Wick” ripoff starring Jason Statham as a former top-secret government assassin who violently unretires after someone kills his bees: If for some twisted reason you showed me this movie right after I’d woken up from a 10-year coma and told me it was opening in theaters that Friday, I might not have any idea what year I was in, but I would know — within five minutes, and beyond a shadow of a doubt — that it was the second weekend of January.

From penning Training Day (2001) to helming the one-two punch of End of Watch (2012) and Fury (2014), David Ayer has had the film industry in the palm of his hand on a couple of different occasions.
Following the success of the latter, he then punched his own ticket to the Dceu, opting to write and direct Suicide Squad as a supervillain take on The Dirty Dozen. The film would star the likes of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Will Smith’s Deadshot and Jared Leto’s Joker, but despite one of the most celebrated trailers of all time at 2015’s San Diego Comic-Con, the subsequent poor reception to Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and the adulation for Tim Miller’s irreverent Deadpool (2016) caused Warners to panic and retool Squad on the fly.

January is not, historically, a great month for new movies. Awards season films will often expand nationwide to help class up the joint, but as far as brand new offerings go, it can be tough sledding. One benefit is that we frequently get an off-the-wall action movie. After all, January is the month that gave us Liam Neeson's unexpected action star turn in "Taken." January 2024 will give one of our hardest-working modern action stars, Jason Statham, the chance to shine in the very silly-looking "The Beekeeper." But can this movie's bonkers premise lure enough moviegoers in to make it a bona fide box office hit?
Director David Ayer's latest is eying a somewhat soft debut with "The Beekeeper" currently looking at an opening weekend in the $8 to $13 million range, per Box Office Pro. The film faces some direct competition as "The Book of Clarence" is also opening against it next weekend,...

There’s everything from animation to new seasons of anthology shows, the return of...

Many actors have several key roles in their careers, but Erika Alexander is one of the rare ones who’s had the role of a lifetime. Thirty years ago, she stepped into the character of Maxine Shaw on Living Single — a now-iconic attorney character inspired by her role models Cicely Tyson, Phylicia Rashad, Whoopi Goldberg and Hillary Clinton. In the years since, she’s been part of significant projects like Get Out and Wu-Tang: An American Saga. But American Fiction, she says, is the crown jewel of her portfolio.
“It’s been very healing to be in this movie,” says Alexander, 54. Alexander plays Coraline, the love interest of Jeffrey Wright’s Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a cantankerous author who challenges the industry’s perceptions of “Black entertainment.” On Dec. 5, just hours before sitting down with Variety, Alexander learned she’d been nominated in the supporting category at the Independent Spirit Awards; she attended last year’s ceremony as a guest.
“I got dropped off on the highway and walked, scooting around the Porta-Potties,” she says, laughing brightly to keep her emotions about the moment at bay. They seep in anyway.
