Sinéad O’Connor’s life and career were marked by cycles of rage and forgiveness. For the Irish singer-songwriter, the world’s ills and evils could be traced back to the Roman Empire—and the Roman Catholic Church in particular. Her beef with the Church didn’t repel her from religion, but propelled her into a perpetual search for meaning amid what she viewed as corruption, abuse, and injustice.
O’Connor’s fiery debut album, 1987’s The Lion and the Cobra, is rife with allegorical stories about war, ghosts, and slain dragons, signaling from the very start that she wasn’t just an artist, but a warrior. Her quest for justice and salvation deepened and matured over the years, reflected in her 1997 EP Gospel Oak, 2000’s Faith and Courage, and 2007’s ambitious Theology.

Billy Joel dug deep into his catalog Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden and played “Los Angelenos” for the first time since 1981. “We never do this song,” he told the crowd. “We haven’t done this since the Eighties I think. We’ll give it a shot.” Here’s a fan-shot video of the performance.

Billy Joel rattling off historic names and events most people under 30 have never heard of hardly seemed like the formula for a hit song, especially in 1989 when the charts were dominated by the likes of Poison, Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, Debbie Gibson, and New Kids on the Block. But it was 30 years ago this week that his history lesson/rock song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” knocked Milli Vanilli’s “Blame It on the Rain” off the top spot to become the number-one song on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Blood on the Tracks has always been one of Bob Dylan’s most mysterious albums, but the upcoming Bootleg Series More Blood, More Tracks, set for release November 2nd, will finally reveal, piece-by-piece, how the 1975 LP came together over just six days at studios in New York City and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
A test pressing of the original album that pre-dated Dylan’s decision to recut five of the songs in Minneapolis has circulated within bootleg circles for decades, but the vast majority of takes on More Blood, More Tracks have never been heard.

The very first time that Grammy Awards telecast producer Ken Ehrlich worked with 18-time winner Aretha Franklin was on his second-ever awards ceremony in 1981, the initial one held at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. Franklin sang her nominated song “Can’t Turn You Loose,” which lost out to Stephanie Mills’ “Never Knew Love Like This Before.” Seventeen years later, in 1998, again at Radio City Music Hall, Ehrlich was faced with the last-minute cancellation of Luciano Pavarotti, who was scheduled to sing “Nessum dorma,” the climactic aria from Puccini’s opera “Turandot,” and turned to the Queen of Soul, who had just sung the song a few days prior at the MusiCares Person of the Year dinner honoring the legendary Italian tenor.
There was also the 2011 opening show medley tribute, the last time Franklin was deathly ill, featuring the unlikely combo of Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride,...

Lou was 71 years old, and had recently undergone a liver transplant in May 2013, according to Rolling Stone. And in July he was hospitalized for severe dehydration.
He is one of the biggest names in music history alongside Bob Dylan and John Lennon. He revolutionized rock ‘n’ roll in the late Sixties by marrying grungy alternative rock with avant-garde concepts, and is often credited with spawning the punk rock movement. He also employed a lyrical honesty that had never been heard before with his band The Velvet Underground and later as a solo artist.

Has it really been 20 years since Billy Joel released his last pop album? Somehow, it’s true: Though the Piano Man has toured extensively, won a Tony, and even put out a collection of classical compositions over the last two decades, he hasn’t dropped an original chart-topper since 1993′s River of Dreams.
But why? Well, according to an extensive interview in this week’s New York Times magazine, the answer’s simple: “I got bored with it,” Joel says. “I wanted to write something other than the three-minute pop tune even though that’s an art form unto itself.

Phil Ramone worked with such a vast array of artists over 50 years that it’s impossible to narrow down his essential work to only 10 recordings, but we’ve given it a shot. While we left out his work with Dionne Warwick, Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Rod Stewart, Lesley Gore and his Broadway productions, as well as so many projects, they are all worth exploring. Ramone, who died today at age 79, won 14 Grammys and was nominated 33 times.

Phil Ramone, who died today at 79, had me at “The Stranger.” I was already a burgeoning young music freak when the landmark Billy Joel album came out in 1977, but I hadn’t really paid attention to producers and the role they played. “The Stranger” changed all of that. I wanted to devour everything about that album. It’s the first album I remember really dissecting every track over and over and trying to figure out how the instruments fit together and marveling at the arrangements. I know every word, even album tracks like the spiky “Get It Right The First Time”...

Earlier this week, Universal Music Group UK Ltd. sent out an email announcing the tracklist for Amy Winehouse’s posthumous album “Lioness: Hidden Treasures.”
What made the announcement so haunting is that 1) It came on Halloween and 2) the sender was listed as “Amy Winehouse” who, of course, died earlier this year at the age of 27.
The new 12-track album, due out Dec. 5, was compiled by Winehouse’s longtime collaborators, Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, who, according to the label, sifted through “previously unreleased tracks,...

HollywoodNews.com: Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick learned a lot about dinosaurs last night. So did about 200 people who came to the American Museum of Natural History to support Mike Nichols and Cynthia O’Neal‘s 20 year old charity, Friends in Deed. Legendary composer Stephen Sondheim created a treasure hunt game with the museum folks, and he was there to watch as all of us scurried through the various dino halls to figure out answers to things like “parrot beak” and “giant sloth.” Once you found the appropriate fossil and filled in the blanks of its name on clue cards, the answers were then drafted down to a single sentence.

HollywoodNews.com: Stop the presses: None other than Prince, dressed like Little Lord Fauntleroy, introduced Barbra Streisand last night at her MusiCares Person of the Year dinner at the La Convention Center. He’d been sitting quietly to the side most of the evening, although at one point he did mildly greet Elvis Costello and his wife Diana Krall, in a sea of 2500 music industry types and stars. This means Prince and Costello sat through a three hour plus evening of performances you might noe associate with their ilk- from the sublime (Leona Lewis) to the sensational (Stevie Wonder).
But then again, so did real legends like Sidney Poitier, Quincy Jones, Sam Moore, and Judy Collins, and a legend who stole the entire show–Tony Bennett, 83, and the master.
At Streisand’s table, her inner circle– husband James Brolin, son Jason Gould, songwriter lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman.
