The late José Mojica Marins, a past recipient of the award, will be commemorated with showings of his three films, and a live talk with Dennison Ramalho, co-screenwriter of his 2008 horror Embodiment of Evil. “As the history and future of Brazil’s cinema.

Stenio is a morgue attendant in Sao Paulo who can communicate with the dead. He uses his supernatural gift to solve crimes and, eventually, attempt to change the circumstances of his own rather desperate life.
The debut feature from Dennison Ramalho, The Nightshifter is a film with an intriguing premise, and early scenes in which grisly corpses come to life before Stenio's weary eyes hit target in a Guillermo del Toro sort of way. At its best the film is reminiscent of Michele Soavi's Cemetery Man, its tone projecting a similar sense of sadness and ennui - Stenio has not asked for this horrible gift. Unfortunately, after around half an hour, things become oddly tedious, and ultimately the film fails to deliver on its early promise. What begins as an interesting set-up actually...

AMC Networks streaming service Shudder has picked up horror film “The Night Shifter” from Brazilian media giant Globo TV in its continued bid to diversify and expand its programming lineup. This is AMC’s second acquisition from Globo, after 10-episode series “Supermax,” a co-production led by Globo, Argentina’s Tvp, Mediaset Spain, Mexico’s TV Azteca, and Uruguayan channel Teledoce. The fictional reality prison-set series was created by Argentine director-producer-writer Daniel Burman, whose 2003 “The Lost Embrace,” won Berlin’s Grand Jury Prize and a best actor Silver Bear for Daniel Hendler.
“The Night Shifter” turns on morgue employee Stênio whose ability to speak with the dead makes for interesting nights. Stenio unleashes a curse that will endanger himself and his family after some conversations with the afterlife inadvertently reveal secrets of his own life.

To work nights is to encourage madness. To do so in a morgue is sentence to delusion. Forfeiting the dreamless night for daytime tremors will let evil unbidden into your home. Dennison Ramalho’s horror-drama “The Night Shifter” works through these premises with spry abandon, offering gratuitous gore and — squinting hard — social commentary wrought from Brazil’s current political descent into reactionary authoritarianism. Although made before Bolsonaro’s election, ‘Night Shifter’ has markers of the civil unrest that delivers demagogues: thuggery, poverty, brutality, misogyny, fanaticism.

Mexico City — Morbido Festival, Mexico’s most important event for genre cinema, has announced that Spain’s Paco Plaza, “Veronica” director and co-creator of the 2007-14 “Rec,” the breakout hit found-footage horror movie series, will be attending the festival and writing a script for one of its newest initiatives.

If the dead could talk, what would they say? Would they tell you about their lives, their loves, their losses? Would they tell you what’s on the other side? Would they ask you to reach out to a loved one and tell them goodbye? Or would they bend your ear with a dark secret or two? What if this dark secret was about you? And more importantly, what would you do with this information? This is the story behind The Nightshifter, a raw meat morality tale that’s chock-full of crimson-coated, nerve-jangling scares.
The Nightshifter, the feature-length debut of shorts filmmaker Dennison Ramalho, is the story of Stênio (Daniel de Oliveira), a meek and lowly morgue attendant who works the graveyard shift. Thanks to Brazilian director Dennison Ramalho I have long had an intense fear of high heels and nails ever since I was on a short film jury where I first saw his 2011 film Ninjas. If this brutal and hardcore trailer for his newest film The Nightshifter (formerly Among the Living) is anything to go by then audiences at the world premiere at Fantasia on July 17th are in for a very, very intense experience. Head up, this trailer is very Nsfw due to violent and organic content. Stênio works the night shift at a morgue in a very large, very violent city. On the job, he sees cadavers in every conceivable state, often the victims of horrific gang warfare. While most...

Besides managing Lady Gaga in Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” remake (out October 5), this year Sam Elliott will star in another movie that sounds original in every way. “The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then he Bigfoot” will have its world premiere this July at the Fantasia International Film Festival. Writer-director Robert Kryzkowski’s first feature — executive produced by twice-Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Sayles — casts Elliott as a WWII veteran who American and Canadian cops send to slay a plague-riddled beast.

He hasn't quite gone the writer/director route of fellow rocker Rob Zombie, but guitar hero Slash launched his own horror movie production company, SlashFiction, back in 2010. The first fruit of that labour was last year's Nothing Left To Fear, directed by Anthony Leonardi III. Now here's a teaser for the next one, The Hell Within."When I read the script for The Hell Within I knew it was the right project for my taste," says the top-hatted rock'n'roll producer. "I love monsters and practical effects, so it spoke to my horror sensibilities. And it's a story I know horror fans will dig as well."That story involves a New York woman, Marie, heading into the Brazilian jungle to save a missing child following some mysterious phonecalls, but finding that's only the beginning of an ordeal. Marie and her husband David get stranded in Seringal, a village overrun with drug runners and lost souls,...

It’s a second go around the alphabet of fear with The ABCs of Death 2. 2012′s first installment – an anthology of 26 stories, each representing a letter of the alphabet – was the very definition of a mixed bag, with (sadly) the bad often outweighing the good. However, given that the good was Very good I still held out hope that this sequel would live up to the expectations and potential that the format has.
Thankfully this time round the good outweighs the bad, although surprisingly there are some disappointing segments from directors whose work I’ve enjoyed; and whose feature work has been hailed as some of the best in the genre – not that there’s any evidence of that here – including...

In ABCs of Death 2, 26 directors contributed a short film, each taking one letter from the alphabet as their inspiration. Nigerian director Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen brings us a supernatural tale that has historical roots in L is for Legacy, and he shared his thoughts on the subject matter and the practical makeup effects used to bring his beast to life:
“It was a true event in history and that legacy kept on. Someone was wrongly accused and the beast came out as the manifestation of the curse that was placed on the people. I chose this story because I like the idea of the supernatural having control over the physical. Somebody that was innocent was wrongly accused and whatever he pronounced became real. I’m a strong believer of the spiritual and that story resonated with me. If you are true and decent, the physical will work for you, no matter how misunderstood you are.

With Fantastic Fest 2014 drawing closer by the day, the horror lover inside me is ready to burst out in a fit of obsessive jubilation knowing the onslaught of movies I’ll be experiencing. Movies like Tusk, V/H/S Viral, The Babadook, and so many others are ready to push my moral boundaries and chill me to the bone, but one project has me uniquely excited, and that’s The ABCs Of Death 2.
I rather like The ABCs Of Death and I’ve since made that pretty clear here at We Got This Covered, so after watching yesterday’s freshly released Red Band trailer for the equally ambitious sequel, I’m officially on pins and needles. Loaded with exploding heads, decapitations, brutality, and gigantic genitalia, this new crop of directors seems to be upping the ante wherever possible, which is expected from filmmakers like the Soska Sisters, Jerome Sable...
