Training rigorously for almost 3 months, Taapsee Pannu took up several forms of martial arts lessons including Krav Maga and mix martial arts for her upcoming film, Naam Shabana.
Choosing to learn and do all her stunts herself without a body double, the Running Shaadi actress was trained by one of the renowned martial arts expert and Hollywood stunt director, Cyril Raffaelli.
Taapsee shared, “I have always been a hyper active kid who used to love outdoor sports. Unfortunately this made suffer a lot of bruises and wounds quite frequently. My parents know how I can go all out and crazy when it comes to any form of sport, this time its martial art. Seeing a few shots in trailer and knowing what I’m going to do my mother was always concerned if I have broken a bone or torn a muscle. Thankfully, I was totally injury free this entire film.

Superstar Akshay Kumar, known for his physical strength and action prowess recently shot a large action portion for his upcoming film, Baby, under probably one of the toughest conditions ever to be encountered for a film’s production – the extreme heat of the Abu Dhabi desert.
The Neeraj Pandey directed film had already shot in Kathmandu and Istanbul but what the unit encountered in Abu Dhabi was severe – burning sand dunes, hard heat winds and a temperature hovering in the fifties! While a large part of the unit was struggling to keep up with this tough terrain, one man seemed to behave like he was on a walk in the park – Akshay Kumar! Always known to enjoy tough schedules and outdoor action,Akshay was at his best even as others seemed ready to melt.

Already renowned for elaborate stunts and his phenomenal prowess in martial arts, Akshay Kumar looks set to hone his parkour skills with the help of French stuntman, Cyril Raffaelli. An image of the two together has been posted by Akshay on the set of his next explosive film, Baby. The international superstar expressed his delight at working with such a big name in the parkour world.
“Guess who?? On the sets of my next thriller #Baby. This is my only hint. He’s a God in my parkour world.”
Akshay Kumar is no stranger to the French practice of free running, having previously admitted to regularly taking part in the exercise. Raffaelli, who has worked on the sets of Die Hard 4.0, The Incredible Hulk and District 13, has been reportedly working with Akshay Kumar to develop his parkour skills even further.

Hollywood remakes of foreign films are here to stay because they perform a great service to illiterate and lazy Americans nationwide, but their track record is dubious at best. This is especially true for remakes of action films for two commonly recurring reasons. Hollywood can rarely compete with the action (usually due to pesky things like insurance), and they often over-think the script in an effort to make it “smarter.” Brick Mansions, the English language redo of the 2004 French hit District B13, thankfully makes no attempt to beef up the film’s intelligence — it’s more likely that they dumbed it down actually. But it will surprise no one that the action is subpar shenanigans created and destroyed entirely through rapid-fire editing. Damien (Paul Walker, replacing the far more limber and athletically talented Cyril Raffaelli) is a cop fighting the good fight in 2018 Detroit. The city previously walled off the less gentrified neighborhood of Brick Mansions in...

Get your first look at director Camille Delamarre’s “Brick Mansions,” a Hollywood remake of the French action series “District 13″ from writer/director/producer Luc Besson. The film is, of course, one of Paul Walker’s last movies before his untimely death late last year in a car crash. Like the 2004 French original, the remake follows an undercover cop in the near future who tries to take down a ruthless crime lord with access to a neutron bomb by infiltrating his gang. The added problem? The gang is located in a walled off housing project. Walker is playing the cop, but I have no idea who RZA is playing. The movie will co-star David Belle, who starred in the original and its 2008 sequel with Cyril Raffaelli. “Brick Mansions” opens this April 25th. Here’s a clip from the original French sequel featuring Belle...

The action thriller is EuropaCorp and Relativity Media’s English-language remake of the 2004 French-made action / thriller District B13. In Brick Mansions, Paul Walker incarnates an undercover cop out to defuse a bomb in possession of drug warlord RZA. Catalina Denis will play David Belle’s romantic interest. Luc Besson, who specializes in run-of-the-mill, Hollywood-style French-made action thrillers, is one of the film’s producers. Directed by Pierre Morel (Taken, From Paris with Love), and co-written by Luc Besson and Bibi Naceri, District B13 / Banlieue 13 stars David Belle, Cyril Raffaelli, Dany Verissimo-Petit, and co-screenwriter Naceri. The film performed modestly at the French box office; according to Box Office Mojo, District B13 was no. 51 on France’s 2004 box-office chart,...

The Film:
The 1990′s were a fine time for being a fighting game fan. Of course, you can’t mention fighting games without the arcade and eventual console hits Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. But with innovation comes evolution, and due to the changing nature of the gaming industry, graphics and gameplay evolved. Such was the case in the fighting game genre, as the 2D fighters became 3D, in terms of environment and gameplay, and for all of the hoopla over Virtual Fighter, it was Tekken and especially its sequels that ruled the market. Outside of Mortal Kombat, who gave a good damn about story, although Wiki has Tekken‘s plot, I really don’t mind the attempt here by director Dwight H. Little (Marked for Death), although the film shares a companionship with the failed Street Fighter movie starring Jcvd, meaning Tekken has guilty pleasure written all over it.

Briefly: There was a small stir a few months back when Mark Ruffalo announced [1] that in addition to playing Bruce Banner in The Avengers, he would play all of the Hulk's scenes via motion capture. The excitement was caused because he said that had never been done -- one actor playing the Hulk's monstrous form -- since Lou Ferrigno's TV work. Which may be true, though both Edward Norton and Tim Roth played parts of their respective 'transformed' characters via mo-cap for Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk. (Cyril Raffaelli played [2] some of the Abomination's movements, too.) Last week stuntman Brandon Molale [3] tweeted [4] (since deleted) that he had auditioned to play the mo-cap version of the Hulk, and suddenly the headlines were that Mark Ruffalo wouldn't be doing the mo-cap. But let's calm down; at the very least we can probably expect Mr. Ruffalo to do some...

One of the films being teased at the American Film Market is Stranded , from Sandra Martin and Hugues Martin. It stars Gregoire Leprince-Ringuet, Theirry Fremont, Said Taghmaoui, Cyril Raffaelli and Aurelien Wiik. Set against the backdrop of the North African desert in 1960, Stranded follows a group of soldiers who are sent on a rescue mission in the desert. Trapped in a sand storm, isolated from their commander, they run into Algerian rebels. As they seek shelter in an uncharted village, another, invisible, threat comes out from the desert - the Djinns. As their ranks are decimated, they'll face the longest nights of their lives. Sounds like this could be a companion piece to Red Sands and The Objective .

For some reason Anchor Bay Films acquired the the U.S. and Australia/New Zealand distribution rights to the awful looking new video game based film Tekkan.
Tekken was written by Alan McElroy and directed by Dwight Little. Anchor Bay plans on giving this film a wide release in the United States in 2011.
I'm shocked this movie got picked up! I know it's based on a popular video game, but the film looks so bad. When I see a movie like this get picked up, it just proves anything can get a distribution deal.
The film is set in a world run by all-powerful corporations, of which the mightiest is the Tekken Corporation, headed by Heiachi Mishima. These corporations regularly send their best fighters to challenge each other in the ring. After running contraband outside the fortified walls of Tekken City, Jin Kazama returns home in time to witness Tekken...

Re-tagged “Stranded” for its international audience it seems the French are sticking to their guns and holding onto their original title of Djinns, for Hugues and Sandra Martin’s upcoming military survival horror. Chicago – Parkour is a type of physical discipline well suited for the cinema. It trains mere mortals to move like supermen. They can leap from one place to another, while overcoming formidable obstacles, without the need for any harnesses or special effects. The only tools used by parkour practitioners are their own bodies and their surrounding environment. Buster Keaton would’ve excelled at this.
I first discovered parkour upon my viewing of the original 2004 French thriller, “District B13,” which featured two spectacular athletes, Cyril Raffaelli and David Belle, performing the majority of their stunts. The film was terrific popcorn entertainment, blending crowd-pleasing action with a sobering political message, achieving an overall impact similar to Neill Blomkamp’s wholly unrelated “District 9.” Though its plot has often been compared to “Escape from New York,” the titular ghetto in “District B13” felt much more grounded in reality. In 2004, action fans were introduced to a brand new style of stunt work, an acrobatic, athletic style called parkour. One of its creators, David Belle, showed off his stuff in District 13, which benefited from being written and produced by Luc Besson and directed by Pierre Morel.
Set in the near future of 2010, the French film showed Paris in economic and societal decay with District 13 being overrun by gangs. Rather than deal with the problem the ineffective police wind up building a wall around the ghetto, isolating its two million residents.
The combination of action, adventure, and contemporary issues turned it into a success both in Europe and America. Morel went on to make a domestic thriller, Taken, and skipped returning to the inevitable sequel, District 13: Ultimatum. The film was released last year and is out this week on Blu-ray from Magnet Home Entertainment.

[This review originally ran with the film's screening at Fantastic Fest but with District 13 Ultimatum now screening at Action Fest we hereby present it to you again.]
District 13 is once again in trouble. The gangs are restless, promised changes have not come to pass, poverty and crime are as rampant as ever. And, just in case things weren't difficult and complex enough in the anarchic district, it appears as though it has a new enemy, a powerful and well financed enemy determined to bring the wrath of the establishment down upon the people and willing to kill to do so. In the face of lawlessness and rising violence there can be only one response: by-the-book supercop Damien and free roaming -- free running, I should say -- vigilante Leto must once again join forces to bring peace to District 13. When Pierre Morel's District B13 burst on to the scene in 2004, prescient timing and clever marketing allowed the film to tap into the bubbling awareness of a new extreme sport, parkour. By casting parkour's co-creator...

Ready for SXSW next week? I'm not. And all these new movies to check out don't help.
Alice in Wonderland -- This 3D mess has a plot as murky as its imagery and plays fast and loose with Lewis Carroll's classic story of the girl who falls down the rabbit hole. More in my review, where for the first time I do not have something positive to say about a Johnny Depp performance. (wide).
Brooklyn's Finest -- Another NYC police procedural, with stars like Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke as well as lesser-known powerhouses like Lili Taylor and Brian F. O'Byrne. Elizabeth checked it out for us, so take a look at her review.
District 13: Ultimatum -- Despite more wire-free stunts of Cyril Raffaelli and Parkour founder David Belle, the sequel to District 13 doesn't even come close to the original. In fact, it actively thwarts suspension of belief.

At Fantastic Fest this past year, only one film kicked our heads right off our shoulders only to then leap from the top of a 15 story building just in time to catch our heads before they hit the ground and then reattach them to our bodies with such ease and tenderness we never knew what hit us- District 13: mother-f@#king Ultimatum!
Like it’s now cult-legendary predecessor District B13, this reunion of writer Luc Besson (The Professional, Fifth Element) and on-screen ass-kickers Leito (David Belle) and Damien (Cyril Raffaelli), District 13 Ultimatum serves up an endless display of some of the most impossible parkour action ever committed to film. A jaw-dropping spectacle that will leave you finding new, potentially deadly ways to go about your daily routine.

The Alamo Guide
for March 4th, 2010
Ah March… the sun is shining, the trees are greening and people from all over the world are about to invade our fair city for SXSW and give us their money. You gotta love the few weeks of spring we get in Texas. Pretty soon it’s going to be hot as balls. Sure, it’ll drop down to 35 probably at some point, but worry not, it’ll be 80 the next day.If you haven’t been into the theater since last week, we put our new Spring Menu Specials up! They are crazy tasty, and come highly recommended from everyone at Alamo HQ. Some of those specials are for the big opener this weekend, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland In 3D! I’ve loved Tim Burton for years, and I love Alamo feasts, so you can find me at the Alice Five-course Feast next Wednesday.

You know what's soooo 2004? Parkour. Yes, the urban free-running art form that dazzled fans and haters alike when it made its splash with the 2004 film "District 13," and then really cooked things up in the opening sequence of the James Bond reboot "Casino Royale." But that was then. This is now. Although six years have passed in real life, only two of them have gone by since Leito (David Belle) and Damien (Cyril Raffaelli) cleaned up the drug dealers in the alt.Paris that was set in 2010. So regardless of real life, no sequel to "District 13" would be complete without some serious parkour from Belle, its founding father. Happily, Patrick Alessandrin's follow-up to "Taken" helmer Pierre Morel's original isn't a carbon copy. No, the other thing that was going on back in '04 was that drugs were bad. Not that they aren't bad now, but we're collectively...

Though no North American release date has been announced for Dwight H. Little's Tekken movie yet, the promotional push for the live-action adaptation of the Namco video game franchise is in full swing.
Twitch recently released a collection of 20 stills from the movie that showcase the way many of the video game's characters, costumes, and settings have been brought to life in the movie. And, the stunt work behind many of Tekken's action sequences was recently featured on the Discovery Channel's Stunt Stars program, offering a behind-the-scenes look at several of the elaborate — and dangerous — stunts designed by fight choreographer Cyril Raffaelli.
Unfortunately, the video clips do not have English subtitles for Raffaelli's French commentary, but the stunts are incredible to behold. Check out Raffaelli's crazy platform jumps between 7:30 and 7:40 of the clip below! (You can find more videos here).

Hot on the heels of the 20 photo stills posted yesterday for Dwight H. Little's Tekken, Discovery Channel's Stunt Stars ran a behind-the-scenes feature on the live action video game, focusing mainly on the stuntwork process. The hour long episode contains plenty of on-set footage and interviews with the stunt crew. Among them is fight choreographer Cyril Raffaelli and his personal stunt team, who oversee the fight scenes with stunt actor Jon Foo and a Parkour sequence involving a risky high jump across two buildings. It gets interesting when Raffaelli tries to assure Eric Norris, the stunt coordinator (and son of the all-mighty Chuck Norris!) that his stuntmen can make the jump without the safety boxes on the ground. Their gung-ho attitude is really cool. Don't ever accuse the French for being a pansy!

Usually, when they follow-up a surprise hit action movie, for some reason the makers feel compelled to change the formula, up the ante, add more explosions, add some sort of crazy subplot. They never think to just make the same basic movie with a few changes. Well, leave it to Luc Besson to change the formula by keeping it exactly the same. District B13: Ultimatum takes place three years after the last movie, and nothing has changed. The government has still walled in the criminals, Tomaso is still trying to fight crime, and Leito is still trying to tear down the walls. The basic premise of the movie is still to showcase Cyril Raffaelli's martial artistry and David Belle's parkour. And by God, do they. Did you like the first movie? Then you'll love the shit out of the second, as it's got the same humor, the same objectification of women,...

Written and produced by Nikita and The Fifth Element director Luc Besson, the French action film District 13 (Banlieue 13) premiered in 2004 and became an instant global success, primarily due to the spring-loaded parkour stunt work of the film’s two leads, Cyril Raffaelli and David Belle. Now the fleet-footed heroes are back in the adrenalin-packed, heart-stopping sequel, District 13: Ultimatum.
The film picks up where the first installment left off. But not much in the Parisian slum District 13 has changed. It is still a crime-infested enclave of the French capital, pockmarked with bullet holes and adorned with anti-government graffiti. It is a place for cage fighting, gun trade and open air iron pumping. From here contraband and cocaine (packed in watermelons) are trafficked.

Ok action fans, I have good news and bad news...
First off, the good news. According to several Turkish sites, Scott Adkins (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ninja, Undisputed 3) and Cyril Raffaelli (Banlieue 13, The Incredible Hulk, Tekken), both martial arts extraordinaire, will take a role in Dark Deal (Karanlık Hesaplaşma'nın) with Raffaelli also serving as the fight choreographer/stunt coordinator. The film is allegedly hailed as the most expensive production ever in Turkey and its expected to blow the minds of action buff everywhere. On what capacity their acting role and the plot entails is unclear as of yet but its been confirmed that Turkish actors Ali Surmeli, Kenan Isik and Tamer Karadagli will be among the cast.
So whats the bad news? The Turkish actioner will be helm by none other than the notorious director Andrzej Bartkowiak who brought us such disastrous trainwrecks as Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li,...

District 13: Ultimatum 2010 101 minutes Rated R Opens in limited theatrical release on February 5th. Now available on participating On Demand services. The original District 13 was not a particularly great movie, but it was a true original and had much to admire. It contained doozy of a first act, style to spare, and a genuinely angry political subtext at its core. Much of the film's appeal came from its use of 'parkour', a martial art form that stressed evasive action via adapting one's body to the environment. In practice, it gave way to several scenes of stars David Belle (the creator of parkour) and Cyril Raffaelli hopping off walls, flying through open holes, and contorting themselves in any which way in order to save the proverbial day. While the film inexplicably put its two major action scenes in the first act of the...

David Belle and Cyril Raffaelli in District 13: Ultimatum Before David Belle was a movie star, he was a fireman like his father and grandfather. And after that, he was in the Marines, but ever restless, decided that wasn't for him either. After a stint in India, he realized his only real interest was parkour, a gravity-defying practice that he is credited with founding. Parkour, which has its roots in French Army training, is the art of using one's body to use the environment to most easily travel from place to place, no matter the obstacle. After YouTube videos of him easily climbing walls and jumping great distances, rebounding off nearby surfaces with cat-like grace caught on, parkour grew beyond Belle's artful movements and into an actual movement. The videos also launched his career as a stuntman and, later, an actor in Pierre Morel's District 13 (aka Banlieu...

The original "District 13" was made in 2004 and set in Paris of the year 2010, which means if the French are going to fulfill producer/writer Luc Besson's vision of walled up ghettos, racial and class warfare, and shirtless dudes leaping from rooftop to rooftop, they'd better get their butts in gear. "District 13" was entirely, utterly of its moment; even if problems in the real French banlieues haven't eased, that moment has largely passed. "District 13"'s parkour chase scenes and customized hot rod cars would look dated even if its sweeping social changes weren't scheduled to occur two weeks ago. Yet here is a sequel, "District 13: Ultimatum," which faithfully continues the first film's aesthetics and story, a vision of futures past.

David Belle and Cyril Raffaelli in District 13: Ultimatum
Photo: Magnet Releasing In 2004 Pierre Morel directed District 13, a French-language action flick mixing parkour with guns, government and the walled in ghettos of Paris, France. Co-written by Luc Besson the film earned enough buzz, and Morel's work was appreciated enough that he went on to direct Taken (also co-written by Besson) to a domestic box-office total eclipsing $145 million and a bona fide action-director career. While Morel isn't back for this sequel it will be interesting to see if the same luck finds new director Patrick Alessandrin considering the two films are almost carbon copies of one another.
Set two years after the original film, District 13: Ultimatum is set in 2013 and the government's promise to clean up the Paris ghetto dubbed D-13 has not been kept. The government has little interest in its inhabitants, and why should it?...

Yes, regular readers of this site are well familiar with the Banlieue 13 franchise - released on these shores as District 13 - in which martial artist Cyril Raffaelli teams up with parkour co-founder David Belle to protect a walled-in slum of future-Paris. But with the Us theatrical release coming on February 5th - the film is already available via VOD and XBox Live - we`ve just been passed some fresh stills from the film.
Presented as a villain`s gallery, I prefer to think of them as rogues. They`re not so bad, really. Just misunderstood. And heavily armed. And one of those girls hides knives in her hair and aint afraid to use them. Si I`ll refrain from calling them villains for now. But check out the images - and trailer - below.

The Tekken movie has been completed for a little while now and lack of activity, including finding a distributor in the USA, has made many people think that this will be just another terrible video game adaptation. Something has finally emerged from the production in the form of its first official poster.
The film follows Jin Kazama (Jon Foo) in his attempts to rid himself of the devil which plagues his soul and confronting his father, Kazuya Mishima (Ian Anthony Dale) and his grandfather, Heihachi Mishima (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa).
In the year of 2039, after World Wars destroy much of civilization as we know it, the remaining territories are no longer run by governments, but by corporations; the mightiest of which is the Mishima Zaibatsu. In order to keep the masses down, Mishima sponsors the King of Iron Fist Tournament, or Tekken, in which fighters battle until one is left standing, who...

A flurry of trailers have recently appeared online including several official Us trailers for foreign films which have previously been released elsewhere, and now 2009 French action film District 13: Ultimatum has followed suit.
A sequel to 2004’s highly successful District 13, French filmmaking legend Luc Besson returns as writer/producer, as do the first film’s stars David Belle and Cyril Raffaelli. For those unfamiliar with the acting duo, David Belle is the primary founder of Parkour (which is heavily featured in both District 13 films) and Cyril Raffaelli is an incredible martial artist and stuntman who is also a Parkour practitioner/traceur. Patrick Alessandrin took over directing duties for the sequel from Pierre Morel, who directed the first District 13 movie, as Morel has been busy with his follow up films Taken (starring Liam Nesson) and the upcoming From Paris with Love (starring John Travolta).

Dinner for Schmucks
Opens: July 23rd 2010
Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams
Director: Jay Roach
Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.
Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".
