Andrea Scrosati, who is group COO and continental Europe CEO of Fremantle, isn’t too worried about various types of turbulence that are currently creating anxiety in the U.S. media market such as draconian cost cuts being made by juggernaut groups and the impending prospect of a Writers Guild of America strike.
Speaking in Italy at a film and TV conference organized by the Idm-Film Commission Südtirol titled “Less is More – What to Do When the Streaming Boom is Over” Scrosati noted that the effect of market consolidation in the U.S. and fear due to plunging stock market results that is prompting cost cuts at Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery certainly means that “some of the big buyers are in a conflict.”
Which, in turn, “makes it more complicated sometimes to have discussions.”
But, he said, “The amount of content that is required by consumers across the world is not going to change.

Plot: Great Expectations is the coming-of-age story of “Pip,” an orphan who yearns for a greater lot in life, until a twist of fate and the evil machinations of the mysterious and eccentric “Miss Havisham” shows him a dark world of possibilities. Under the great expectations placed upon him, Pip will have to work out the true cost of this new world and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be. A damning critique of the class system, Dickens’ novel was published in 1861 after first releasing it in a series of weekly chapters beginning in December 1860.
Review: Adaptations of Charles Dickens are aplenty on the small screen and as feature films. Great Expectations has been adapted multiple times, notably in 1998 by Alfonso Cuaron and starring Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Bancroft, and Robert De Niro. In 2012, Harry Potter director Mike Newell took a shot at a film version starring Jeremy Irvine,...

Cannes — Crime thrillers, missing girl mysteries: Both are staples of German TV. But, backed by Germany ’s TV industry drivers – producer Oliver Berben, at Constantin’s Moovie, broadcaster Zdf, sales company Beta Film – Nina Grosse’s “The Typist” underscores the new edge of scripted drama on European free-to-air TV, one of the big trends in Canneseries. That was already seen, when it comes to Germany, in “Shades of Guilt,” another Moovie, Zdf, Beta collaboration involving Grosse and also starring Iris Berben (“Eddie the Eagle”) and Moritz Bleibtreu (“Run. Lola, Run”). But that played second primetime.
“The Typist is a show which usually would have been aimed at a second primetime window, but the high quality and the star-character of the protagonists made it eligible for primetime TV,” said Jan Motjo, Beta Film CEO.
He added: “What’s interesting is the combination of the ambition to do something different, but still...

Premiering its first two episodes at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival, the eight episode Cold War television mini-series “Deutschland 83” went on to become the first German series to be broadcast on American television in its native language. A Sundance TV original series (co-produced by Rtl Television), it stands as one of the more notable moments in television from 2015, an example of a growing international industry with increased cross-over potential. Created by husband and wife duo Anna Winger, an American novelist, and Joerg Winger, a German television producer, the series reflects not only period tensions but is constructed in a familiar format that’s earned it comparisons to the acclaimed Us series “The Americans.” Imbued with a delectable early 80s soundtrack, East meets West with vintage flair, an antidote to the curiously hampered mechanics of Steven Spielberg’s recent theatrical release, Bridge of Spies, which documents the birth of the infamous...

How did this sneak by? It's a combo escapist spy story, engrossing soap opera, and historically accurate Cold War flashback to the time of Duran Duran and Blondie, produced in Germany with a great cast of young and/or unfamiliar actors. Deutschland 83, Season 1, Episode 8, “Able Archer”
Written by Anna Winger
Directed by Samira Radsi
Aired Wednesdays at 11pm (Et) on SundanceTV
Defcon 1 is literally and metaphorically reached in Deutschland 83‘s season finale for better and for worse. “Able Archer” suffers from the problem many dramas set against historical events face: The audience already knows the outcome. This means that Martin’s fight to convince East Germany and the Soviet Union that West Germany, the United States, and Nato are just running an elaborate test–as opposed to gearing up for World War III–lacks some of the tension a fictional event could have mustered for viewers. However, Joerg and Anna Winger’s improbable summer hit has effectively used family drama as an allegory for its East/West historical plot all season, so the finale is much more about how all the characters process this near miss than the near miss itself.

Shall we play a game?
The year that War Games hit theaters, 1983, was also the year that the world came the closest it had to nuclear war since the Cuban Missile Crisis. While that film depended on a computer to figure out the concept of mutually assured destruction, Deutschland 83‘s penultimate episode of the season, “Bold Guard,” places that burden squarely on Martin’s young shoulders. Of course, a computer simply analyzes a situation based on hard data and spits out a conclusion. In War Games, the data told the computer, called Joshua, that the only winning move is not to play in the first place. Unfortunately for Martin, he is dealing with humans, and unlike computers, humans are rarely motivated by data alone.
