Denzel Washington is one of the most respected and prolific actors in Hollywood. The two-time Oscar winner is often considered to be one of the greatest actors of the generation. He has worked with acclaimed directors such as Spike Lee, Tony Scott, Ridley Scott, Antoine Fuqua, and more. He won the Oscar for the films Glory and Training Day.
While Washington established himself as a dramatic actor, the Malcolm X star also broke boundaries and stereotypes as a bankable action star. He featured in films such as The Equalizer franchise and Inside Man. One of Washington’s most memorable performances was when he starred in Tony Scott’s action cult classic Man on Fire.

Revenge is a dish best served cold in "Man on Fire," Tony Scott's excellent, violent thriller from 2004. The film is currently streaming on Netflix overseas, where audiences are seemingly keen to tune into the adventures of Denzel Washington's John W. Creasy. Creasy, we learn, is a damaged, miserable, unshaven former CIA agent and mercenary turned bodyguard. If that sounds like a demotion, it is — Creasy has a drinking problem that's pretty much destroyed his career. Now he can only find work guarding other people. He's also perpetually miserable and grumpy, unwilling to get close to anyone for any reason. His only friend is an old friend played with weird gusto by Christopher Walken.
Walken's character helps Creasy land a new job. This latest gig takes Creasy to Mexico, where he's tasked with guarding Pita (Dakota Fanning), a young girl who is the daughter of a wealthy Mexican businessman...

A few weeks ago, Netflix announced it would make a TV adaptation of A. J. Quinnell’s Man on Fire, a novel which was famously turned into perhaps one of the definitive Denzel Washington movies, one which is also considered the late Tony Scott’s masterpiece. So what gives? Why improve on perfection? Could there possibly be a John Creasy that would be seen as an improvement on Denzel’s towering performance? But did you know that this movie wasn’t actually the first adaptation of Quinnell’s novel and that John Creasy’s adventures continued in book form despite his tragic end in Scott’s movie? In this episode of Revisited, we look back at one of the best action films of the 2000s and perhaps Denzel Washington’s most iconic role.
Flashback to the mid-eighties. Despite being about forty, Tony Scott was only just starting to move into features.

Netflix is all about action after finding success with The Recruit and the launch of The Night Agent, starring Gabriel Basso. To capitalize on its audience’s thirst for blood, bullets, and revenge, Netflix is giving the green light to an eight-episode series order to an adaptation of Man on Fire. Netflix’s Man on Fire TV series is based on the first two of the five books in A.J. Quinnell’s series and follows features that similarly adapt the author’s works, also known as Philip Nicholson.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series “tells the story of John Creasy, a broken ex-mercenary on a mission to avenge the death of his only friend, while protecting his fallen comrade’s daughter from the forces that destroyed her family.”
Tony Scott directed a version of Man on Fire in 2004, starring Denzel Washington as John Creasy, while Glen Scott played the character in a 1987 Italian feature.

Netflix is bringing a fabled action hero from the world of literature to the small screen, as the streaming service is making a "Man on Fire" TV show. While many viewers are likely familiar with that name from the movies based on author A.J. Quinnell's works (more on the movies in a minute), this will be adapting his work for TV with an eight-episode season that has been handed a straight-to-series order by the streamer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kyle Killen ("Fear Street") is on board as writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the series. The series will adapt the first two books in the "Creasy" series, named for the protagonist. Those books are 1980's "Man on Fire" and 1992's "The Perfect Kill." Should things go well, Quinnell has three other books to pull material from in the form of 1993's "The Blue Ring," 1994's "Black Horn," and 1996's "Message from Hell.
