Banished will not be coming back to BBC Two, its star Russell Tovey has revealed.
Tovey said that the decision to cancel Jimmy McGovern's gritty historical series was "a sad day for drama".
The history of Australia will have to tell it's story without us - #banished on @BBCTwo has ended it's adventure.. Sad day for drama x

Banished offered an uncompromising look at life in 18th century Australia, with tensions high between officers and convicts. Starring Tovey, MyAnna Buring, Rory McCann and Julian Rhind-Tutt, the series opened to overnight audiences of 3.4 million in March.
"I think all of us would love to rejoin this story and be a part of it again," MyAnna Buring, who played Elizabeth Quinn, told Digital Spy. "Some stories that you tell, they become very close to your heart - and this is one of those."

Setting his new series in 18th century Australia might seem like a departure for Jimmy McGovern - the BAFTA-winning writer renowned for using drama to address issues plaguing contemporary Britain.
But when asked what's inherently special about a McGovern script, regardless of setting, both Russell Tovey and MyAnna Buring give the same answer: "Character."
Both star in McGovern's new BBC Two series Banished - a seven-part serial about the first settlers in Oz, many of whom were convicts shipped halfway across the world against their will.
"Jimmy adores the people he writes and he knows intrinsically who each of these people are, and the way that those characters interweave is inherent to him," Tovey suggests.
Buring - speaking to DS a few days later - is similarly effusive about McGovern: "He just gets straight down to the nitty-gritty of what it means to be human.

A Toronto man who made headlines last month by offering a free round-the-world air ticket to a woman with the same name as his ex-girlfriend has found Ms. Right. Jordan Axani, 28, and his then girlfriend, named Elizabeth Gallagher, booked heavily discounted round-the-world air tickets in May, but their relationship ended and he didn't want her ticket to go to waste. The ticket had a strict no-transfer policy, but since passport information was not required when booking, it can be used by any Canadian named Elizabeth Gallagher. Axani posted his offer last month on the popular Reddit social media website, and received thousands of emails,...

The BBC has commissioned new dramas by award-winning scriptwriter Jimmy McGovern and the creator of Hustle Tony Jordan.
BBC's Controller of Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson announced the projects at a keynote speech he gave at Miptv.
He said: "Both of these new commissions are passion projects for Jimmy McGovern and Tony Jordan - and are projects only the BBC would make."
McGovern has teamed up with Rsj Films to create an eight-part serial for BBC Two. The untitled series will be set in the late 1780s and will focus on the deportation of unwanted British citizens to the other side of the world.
The title and cast of the upcoming programme - which will be told through the eyes of convicts James Freeman, Tommy Barrett and Elizabeth Quinn - is expected to be announced in the coming months.
