Marvel had a rough year in 2023. Many of its properties underperformed, and they lost their big villain due to Jonathan Majors being fired. Looking forward to their upcoming slate, comic fans have been excited about some of the studio’s projects over the next few years. Will these films help Marvel regain control? The upcoming Thunderbolts film has been one that fanboys have been hoping to see since the MCU started. With some recent news about the property coming up, it seems like the right time to break down what we know about the production.
Who Are The Thunderbolts?
The team first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1997 in an issue of The Incredible Hulk. They seemed to be a new group of superheroes that had arrived on the scene and gained acclaim very quickly. The reader was informed that the group was actually a group of supervillains led by Baron Zemo.

Kevin Feige was part of the infamous Marvel Creative Committee (McC) in the early stages of the MCU and played a crucial role in preventing the committee from ruining Captain America. According to reports, Feige and Louis D’Esposito vehemently opposed the committee’s idea to set the character in modern times. There were screaming matches during meetings of the McC, with Feige emerging successful and giving us the period piece, Captain America: The First Avenger.

According to the book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, the McC consisted of Dan Buckley, Joe Quesada, Brian Michael Bendis, Louis D’Esposito, Kevin Feige, and Alan Fine. The book suggested that most of the unpopular and toxic opinions came from Alan Fine, who was the Dwight to Ike Perlmutter’s Michael.

As movies and TV shows have become the dominant mode of superhero storytelling, some comic writers have crossed mediums with the characters they pen. Allan Heinberg wrote a brief run on "Wonder Woman" and years later wrote the screenplay for the 2017 "Wonder Woman" movie. Brian Michael Bendis, the defining Marvel Comics writer of the 2000s, sat on Marvel Studios' now-disbanded "creative committee." James Gunn, as the co-head of DC Studios, has brought writer Tom King into the fold.
"Deadpool & Wolverine," which brings the 20th Century Fox side of Marvel into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the latest example of this; one of the movie's five credited co-writers is Zeb Wells, who also wrote an episode of "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law." For some Marvel Comic fans, however, his name lives in infamy.
Now, Wells' "X-Men" related work is well-regarded. The 18-issue series "Hellions" was like a mutant version of "Suicide Squad...

This post contains spoilers to Daredevil: Born Again.
Daredevil: Born Again? More like Daredevil on Netflix: Born Again!
When Disney announced the MCU TV series Daredevil: Born Again, the studio played coy about the show’s relationship to the Netflix series that preceded it. Yes, Charlie Cox would once again play blind lawyer turned protector of Hell’s Kitchen Matt Murdock, and Vincent D’Onofrio would return as his enemy Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime.
At first, the distinction made sense. While Daredevil remained strong, especially through its third season, shows such as Iron Fist and The Defenders suffered from stories stretched thin and lackluster performances. Furthermore, the show’s rough violence and sexuality made them a poor fit with the MCU’s soft PG-13 aesthetic.
However, with each month, it seems more and more like Daredevil: Born Again will be a direct continuation of the Netflix shows. Not...

The following contains spoilers for Marvel's "Echo."
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has made interesting detours in its television output, with several shows on Disney+ that serve as side-stories to the greater overarching MCU "phases." Now they've started releasing stories under the "Marvel Spotlight" banner, which allows for much more adult content than the family-friendly MCU fare people have grown accustomed to, and the first mini-series under the banner is "Echo." "Echo" follows the story of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), an Indigenous woman who was taken in by Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) after the death of her father. In the comics, she eventually becomes a superhero through a very long, painful journey that sees her go from one of Kingpin's goons to helping out the New Avengers, even teaming up with Moon Knight and Daredevil along the way. Created by Joe Quesada and David Mack, she's...

Let’s be honest: the MCU is in a tough place. Even excellent entries like Loki season two and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 have failed to make people forget about the abysmal Secret Invasion and imperfect movies Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels. Also, did you know that What If…? season two happened?
Marvel will be largely laying low for 2024, with Deadpool 3 the only movie on the film release calendar. But the tv shows will still happen, starting with Echo, the first to be released under the Ma-Rated Marvel Spotlight heading.

Marvel’s ‘Echo’ Starring Alaqua Cox Gets A New Release Date! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Marvel’s Echo, focusing on the life of Maya Lopez, will soon be released, but the studio has made the fans happier by bringing it a day earlier. Alaqua Cox will be seen in the leading role, and she made her first appearance in the Disney+ series Hawkeye. Marvel has been extending its branches in the Ott platform with several web series, and after Loki Season 2, the viewers’ expectations have increased.
For the unversed, Maya Lopez, the Marvel character, was created by David Mack and Joe Quesada; in the comic books, she first appeared in Daredevil #9. Maya’s story is mainly associated with Daredevil, aka Matt Murdock since she is known to be the adopted daughter of Kingpin, the archnemesis of Matt Murdock.

Since her debut in 1999’s Daredevil #9, written by David Mack and penciled by Joe Quesada, Echo has gone through many changes. Readers first met Echo as Maya Lopez, an unwitting pawn in the mind games the Kingpin Wilson Fisk played against Matt Murdock. Like Daredevil, Lopez uses her different abilities as a superpower, as her deafness makes her a more attentive observer, resulting in photographic reflexes.
Lopez initially used those abilities to become Echo, a hero with fighting skills on par with Daredevil or Bullseye. Later, she took the name Ronin, a mysterious ninja who fought alongside the Avengers. Most recently, Echo acquired the Phoenix Force and joined the Avengers as Thunderbird.
Next year, Echo makes her most audacious move yet, becoming the main character in a live-action Disney+ series. Played by the Menominee and Mohican actor Alaqua Cox, who is deaf like her character, Echo first emerged in the MCU during Hawkeye season one.

Fox’s X-Men universe has certainly run the board when it comes to continuity and quality. We’ve seen incredible cinematic outings like X-Men First Class, we’ve gotten fun action-comedy romps like Deadpool, and we’ve even seen one of the most inspired comic book adaptations in recent history with the always impactful, Logan.
It’s crazy to believe that the same studio that made Wolverine the most popular X-Men member is the same studio that nearly caused Hugh Jackman to walk away from the character forever. But luckily that’s not the case as we currently have a Deadpool x Wolverine crossover movie that looks to finally be putting Jackman in his iconic blue and yellow duds after over twenty years of teasing.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the 2009 entry in the Fox universe that promised the moon but gave us… whatever this is.

Available this October from Image Comics’ imprint, Syzygy Publishing, A Haunted Girl is a new four-issue horror comic book series, co-written by the father-daughter team of Ethan Sacks and Naomi Sacks, with art by Marco Lorenzana. A paranormal thriller that "channels terrors both otherworldly as well as the real-life terror that comes with struggles of anxiety and depression," we have an exclusive preview you can read right now.
Along with the preview, Ethan Sacks shared the inspiration behind the comic book series and their approach to telling a horror story that focuses on mental health:
"This is a fantastical horror story that's inspired by my daughter's real life mental health struggles. The goal was to use the supernatural terror as a metaphor for the scariness of going through a battle with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation—especially hospitalization, which can be terrifying for a teen and their family. Before the 2020s, film archivists' worst nightmares were digital degradation or the simple loss of film reels. Now, streaming services have created a new one for them: the purging of original movies and series without a physical release.
HBO Max has been a leading culprit, but Disney+ isn't blameless either. This is, after all, the same company that used to place its movies in the "Disney Vault" during the reign of physical media. It had previously been confirmed that the service would be removing 50 titles on May 26, 2023, including "Willow," "Big Shot," and "Y: The Last Man." However, it's been discovered that another title was unexpectedly included in the purge: "Marvel's Runaways," which is now no longer listed on Hulu or Disney+ (in the U.S. or internationally).
Nominally set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Runaways" adapted the eponymous comic first created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Aphona. Both the...

At the end of "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse," Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) went back to his home universe and reconciled with his ex Mary Jane Watson. Peter is back in the sequel, "Across The Spider-Verse" and this time he's got someone coming with him — his and Mj's daughter, Mayday Parker, who has inherited her father's spider powers.
Don't expect to see this new Spider-Girl pop up in mainstream Marvel Comics, though. In that world, Peter and Mj are currently separated. They've been on-again, off-again since 2008. What happened that year? Only the most despised Spider-Man storyline ever written, "One More Day." What happens in this infamous story? Fifteen years ago this month, Iron Man became a genre-defining hit that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The anniversary has Marvel Studios founding chairman David Maisel looking to the past and to the future as he plans his next venture.
Maisel recalls that over a weekend in 2003 he came up with the concept of Marvel producing its own movies — films that would combine its characters in one universe. He pitched Marvel on that idea and got hired to oversee its film efforts, working to secure financing for a slate and convincing Marvel to delay licensing more of its characters to other movie studios, ala the way Spider-Man was at Sony and X-Men was at 20th Century Fox.
“Marvel was not what Marvel is now,” Maisel tells The Hollywood Reporter. “No one believed in us for years.”

Long before Charlie Cox became the Daredevil we all know and love with his excellent Netflix show (soon to be sort of revived as a Disney+ "Daredevil" series), Ben Affleck had a go at it. After "X-Men" in 2000 and Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" in 2002, studios were keen to repeat their success and began churning out more and more cape-based fare that would ultimately lead to the deluge of superhero media we're currently enduring. But in the lead-up to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's dominance, there were a fair few missteps, 20th Century Fox's "Daredevil" being one of them.

The new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has arrived and to quote a certain webbed pigilante, “It Can get weirder!” The previous movie gave us seven different Spider-folk with two more popping up in the post-credits. While we know that this sequel will include a take on Jessica Drew Spider-Woman, Spider-Punk, and even the Spider-Man of the 1970s Japanese TV series, the new trailer bombards us with dozens upon dozens of Spider-Men.
Some of them are just random color schemes and designs. Others are deep cuts to the Marvel multiverse or at least appear to be obscure references to either Spider-Man variants or phases. Here are some that we noticed.
Here’s the trailer if you haven’t seen it already…
Now, let’s get you some pictures of Spider-Man!

The loss of James Gunn — the talented writer/director behind the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films who will now oversee the newly formed DC Studios (along with partner Peter Safran) at Warner Bros. Discovery — is obviously a huge blow to the wildly successful Marvel Studios movies (and Disney’s larger streaming output), but it also serves as perhaps a less obvious blow to the company’s Parks division, which lost one of its most enthusiastic and innovative champions.
In an unstable and volatile market, with the movie industry still recovering following Covid and streaming facing an uncertain future, Disney’s theme park division is increasingly important — and profitable — to the company.
Just how important are the parks? When Disney’s profits jumped 50 earlier this year during its fiscal third-quarter, a big driver was revenue from the parks totaling 21.5 billion, a 26 increase from the previous year, with an operating profit that was up 50 to 3.6 billion.

Edgardo Miranda-Rodríguez cares a lot — about his family, his homeland, and yes, about superheroes, too.
Born in New Jersey but raised between the Bronx and Puerto Rico, Miranda-Rodríguez saw firsthand the discrimination that Nuyoricans were subjected to in the Seventies and Eighties. Marvel Studios is sending out an "Echo" in 2023, and now the first footage is here. Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), the deaf Tracksuit Mafia leader with photographic reflexes, a prosthetic leg, and a Native American heritage, has her own Disney+ spin-off series coming next year. We last saw Maya facing off with her bad surrogate dad, Kingpin (Vincent D'onofiro), in "Hawkeye," and you know how that ended.
To get you ready for "Echo," Marvel has unveiled a sneak peek of the series out of the D23 fan expo in Anaheim where /Film's Ethan Anderton was reporting live. D'onofrio and Charlie Cox have already been confirmed to appear in "Echo," giving the onetime Netflix stars a continued presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe en route to the upcoming Disney+ series "Daredevil: Born Again."

The official trailer for “Echo,” the Disney+ series starring Alaqua Cox as the titular hero, has been unveiled. The trailer was introduced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige on Saturday at the D23 Expo.
The “Echo” footage, which was exclusive to those in the room at D23, included subtitles, shots of Native people and tons of Echo (Cox) kicking ass. At the very end of the first-look video, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin returns and is wearing an eyepatch.
The show is a spinoff of last year’s Marvel series “Hawkeye,” which featured Cox as Echo, aka Maya Lopez, in a supporting role. Created by David Mack and Joe Quesada in 1999 as a supporting character for the superhero Daredevil, Maya Lopez is a deaf Cheyenne woman with expert athletic skills and the ability to perfectly copy people’s movement. The Hollywood Reporter has a look at a number of covers created by artists such as Jim Lee, David Finch and Liefeld himself for the issue, due out from Image Comics on July 20.

Ever since the introduction of Echo in Hawkeye, fans have hoped that Daredevil and the Kingpin would once again do battle on screen. While Hawkeye did eventually give us the return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime, Charlie Cox had only a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, sans red devil horns. But if a costume designer’s resume is any indication, the two arch-enemies will be clashing again soon.
Along with clips of her excellent work on films such as Speed Racer and Thor: Ragnarok, Stacy Caballero includes a description of her work on the upcoming Echo series for Disney+. Spider-Man has a couple of major milestones coming up. This year marks the 60 year anniversary of Spider-Man’s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15. We’re also getting a new volume of Amazing Spider-Man with a brand new first issue by Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr. Marvel is also celebrating the upcoming 900th issue of the long-running comic with Wells working with Ed McGuinness.
Wells’ big Spidey run is coming up this April and it comes with a big question: “What did Spider-Man do?”
While John Romita, Jr. is one of the Spider-Man artists, Zeb Wells also has had a big hand in the wallcrawler’s history. He wrote for the underrated Avenging Spider-Man series, gave us one of the best Lizard comics ever in the “Shed” storyline, brought back Carnage from being torn in half by the Sentry in space, had Spider-Man team up with Barack Obama, as well as many other stories.

Now that Disney has regained screen rights to Marvel superheroes "X-Men", "Fantastic Four", "Wolverine" and "Deadpool" from 21st Century Fox, next on the list is recovering rights to Marvel Comics' "Namor: The Sub-Mariner", paving the way for a big budget undersea adventure that could make DC's "Aquaman" look like 'Charlie The Tuna':
Plans fell through for a live action "Namor" TV series in the 1950's, starring Richard Egan, plus there was interest in a 1970's TV pilot that was scrubbed because of a similarity to the NBC series "Man from Atlantis" (1977), starring Patrick Duffy, that Marvel Comics licensed for publishing.
To date, Universal still controls screen rights to the "Hulk" and will only allow Marvel Studios to feature the character as part of an ensemble, rather than as the main character in a stand-alone film.
"I can't speak for the studios," said Marvel's Joe Quesada about Disney recovering screen rights to Namor from Universal.

This article contains massive Spider-Man: No Way Home spoilers.
It’s generally considered to be the worst Spider-Man story ever written; a contrived and hideous editorial exercise, engineered solely to erase Peter and Mary and Watson Parker’s marriage after 20 years of existence; a four-issue monument to everything that is awful and cynical about comic book storytelling and the laziness of retconning previous events.
One More Day, penned by J. Michael Straczynski, but penciled and truthfully masterminded by then-Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada, is a narrative monstrosity that betrayed everything good about the Peter Parker and Mj characters in service to a woefully misguided commercial decision from upstairs. And it just became the climactic linchpin of Kevin Feige’s first Spider-Man movie trilogy, as well as the cathartic resolution to Spider-Man: No Way Home, the currently best reviewed live-action Spidey flick ever made.
How? What? Why?!

This article contains Spider-Man: No Way Home spoilers as well as potential spoilers for the wider MCU.
Spider-Man reaches the end of a trilogy, which in its way now feels like the culmination of a trilogy of Spider-Man sagas. In what we can best describe as the end of the “Son of Stark” era of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, our hero goes big. Thanks to an ill-advised team-up with a wizard, heroes and villains from other continuities and past movie franchises show up, including a bizarre cameo from a drunken wild card trying to make sense of this madness.
Here are the many, many references and easter eggs sprinkled throughout Peter’s crazy, magical adventure into the multiverse, which leaves him with No Way Home.

One is your friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, a kid from Queens trying to juggle his life and his duty to help others. The other is the grand protector of our dimension, fighting mystical threats from throughout the multiverse. They may not sound like they complement each other on paper but, believe it or not, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange work really well together.
It’s actually fairly common to see the two of them working together–their paths cross pretty frequently on the streets of New York, and Spidey is the type to always (inadvertently or not) stick his nose in other heroes’ business. And with them showing up on the big screen together in Spider-Man: No Way Home, we figured it was worth looking back at some of their best comic book team ups.
Spider-Man: One More Day (2007)
Spidey and Strange’s most controversial pairing is also probably the biggest influence on No Way Home.

Now that Disney has regained screen rights to Marvel superheroes "X-Men", "Fantastic Four", "Wolverine" and "Deadpool" from 21st Century Fox, next on the list is recovering rights to Marvel Comics' "Namor: The Sub-Mariner" from Universal, paving the way for a big budget undersea adventure that could make DC's "Aquaman" look like 'Charlie The Tuna':
Plans fell through for a live action "Namor" TV series in the 1950's, starring Richard Egan, plus there was interest in a 1970's TV pilot that was scrubbed because of a similarity to the NBC series "Man from Atlantis" (1977), starring Patrick Duffy, that Marvel Comics licensed for publishing.
To date, Universal still controls screen rights to the "Hulk" and will only allow Marvel Studios to feature the character as part of an ensemble, rather than as the main character in a stand-alone film or TV series.
"I can't speak for the studios," said Marvel's Joe Quesada...

One of the big new Marvel shows announced for Disney+ is Echo, starring Alaqua Cox. The character will be introduced in Hawkeye later this month and now is the perfect time for her to shine. In the comics, Echo was never truly a top-tier hero. Echo has mostly been portrayed as a supporting character, but she is remembered for her role in an era that goes well with MCU Phase 4. More specifically, she represents the rebirth of the Avengers.
Maya Lopez was introduced in Daredevil #9 in 1999. The storyline was written by David Mack and drawn by Joe Quesada. Through no fault of its own, the story was doomed to be overwhelmed by its placement in the Daredevil series, as it followed Kevin Smith’s high-profile take on the character and came just before Brian Michael Bendis’ lengthy and defining run.

Back in 2015, we heard Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige almost walked away from the company due to ongoing disagreements with the Marvel Creative Committee about "Captain America: Civil War." This group situated at the Marvel Entertainment offices in New York consisted of Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, president Alan Fine, Marvel Comics writer Brian Michael Bendis, Marvel Comics publisher Dan Buckley, and Marvel Entertainment Cco Joe Quesada, and they were constantly meddling in the affairs of Marvel Studios with terrible notes and worse ideas. At the time, all we heard was talk about the brass in New York wanting to scale...

Hulu released a first look at Gillian Anderson as Catherine’s mother Joanna in Season 2 of “The Great,” which premieres Nov. 19.
The comedy-drama, billed as “anti-historical,” satirizes the story of Catherine the Great, Empress of All Russia. Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow also star.
Consisting of 10 episodes, Season 2 will see Catherine coup Peter and take the throne for herself, after which she must fight everyone in her life to bring the ideology of the Age of the Enlightenment to her reluctant country. Anderson’s Joanna is one of Catherine’s many adversaries in that struggle.

The trailer for Marvel series Hawkeye has the Avengers archer in the midst of Christmastime chaos tonally evocative of Die Hard—except, you know, in the streets of New York City and not a high-tech L.A. skyscraper. However, while the show’s long-teased idea of a reluctant Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) taking on a scrappy protégé in Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) comes to fruition before our eyes, the trailer also quickly flashes to another potentially important character, Echo, a deadly assassin who happens to have direct connections to Daredevil and Kingpin. Consequently, we could finally have a Marvel Cinematic Universe bridge to the forgotten “Street Level” Netflix shows.
Echo, as played by debuting actress Alaqua Cox, appears in the Hawkeye trailer in a red-lit flash that lasts for a single second before things move along. However, don’t let the briefness of that moment belie her prospective importance to the MCU.
