We may still have a few questions about this year's MTV Video Music Awards - like who's hosting the night of music - but at least we know everyone who's nominated! Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande are leading the pack of nominees with nine nods each thanks in large part to their instant club collaboration "Rain on Me," followed by Billie Eilish and The Weeknd with six nominations each. Not only does this year's list of nominees host two quarantine-specific categories (best music video from home and best quarantine performance) but it also has a couple of history-makers: Eilish is the first artist in Vma history to nab two video-of-the-year nominations while still in their teens and Grande is the first artist to be nominated for video of the year three years in a row since Beyoncé's run from 2014 to 2016, just to name a couple. Who will take home a "Moon Person" this year?...

Filmmaker David Fincher is known as a meticulous stylist, which requires strong collaborations with the creative artists working behind the scenes. So to promote his latest effort, the Netflix psychological thriller “Mindhunter,” he joined costume designer Jennifer Starzyk, production designer Steve Arnold and cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt at a recent Fysee event for Emmy voters. We talked to Starzyk, Arnold and Messerschmidt on the red carpet for the event. Scroll down and click on their names below to watch their complete interviews.
For Starzyk it was an “incredible, daunting, exciting” undertaking. But while the project was intimidating, “once you see that you can accomplish something, that gets the momentum to go further and further.” “Mindhunter” is set in the 1970s, normally a fertile era for costume design, but her work on the series is distinguished by its “restraint.” Still, she found subtle ways to accentuate the personalities of her characters, from...

The American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) feature film nominees tends to lean toward big-scale movies, and this year is no exception. Their top five include frontrunner Roger Deakins for his stunning visuals in “Blade Runner 2049” as well as Rachel Morrison, who photographed “Mudbound.” Left out were viable but smaller-scale contenders “Call Me By Your Name” and “The Post.”
So far, neither the Asc nor the cinematography branch of the Academy has ever nominated a woman for a feature film. So Morrison’s nomination is a big deal. (Next up for Morrison: Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Black Panther.”) According to a study by the Center for the Study of Women in Television & Film, women made up 5 percent of cinematographers on the top 250 domestic-grossing films in 2016.

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards are fast approaching, which means that in only a few weeks you'll be treated to an excellent night of performances and appearances by the likes of Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence and the Machine, B.o.B and Deadmau5 (who will serve as the house DJ at the show). While people tend to remember the classic performances and the unhinged moments, the coveted Moonman is the reason why people show up and tune in. This year, there are 16 categories wherein some of the biggest music stars in the universe will compete for the coolest trophy in awards shows. Today, we take a look at the nominees in the Best Cinematography category.
Though the main event of the music video tends to be the song, most should be able to work even if the sound is put on mute. That's where cinematography comes into play.
