Now that Renfield is available on Blu-ray and DVD, I think a lot of people will be kicking themselves for not sinking their teeth into the horror-comedy on the big screen. The home video release boasts an hour of making-of featurettes and deleted/extended scenes, plus an audio commentary with eight crew members.
The track features producer Samantha Nisenboim, screenwriter Ryan Ridley, makeup effects supervisor Christien Tinsley, visual effects supervisor James E. Price, assistant editor Noah Cody, supervising sound editor/sound designer John Marquis, supervising sound editor Nancy Nugent, and supervising digital colorist David Cole.
Here are eight things I learned from the Renfield commentary…
1. Using footage from the original Dracula was Adam McKay’s idea.
Renfield opens with Nicolas Cage’s Dracula and Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield inserted into footage from Tod Browning’s 1931 classic adaptation of Dracula, a concept that came from McKay after boarding the project.

Inevitable comparisons are going be made between Bela Lugosi's classic Universal monster in Tod Browning's 1931 "Dracula" and Nicolas Cage's homage to the character in the new action comedy "Renfield," especially when director Chris McKay refers to the film as a "quasi-sequel" to the original. McKay's version certainly takes liberties with the material, catching up with Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) 90 years after Browning's masterpiece. Renfield realizes he's been in an extremely lengthy toxic relationship with his master while he sits in on group therapy sessions looking for potential victims. The abuse that Renfield suffers dates all the way back to their original meeting, prompting McKay and writers Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ridley to return to the scene of the crime in the opening prologue for "Renfield."
McKay and his team came up with the idea to essentially replace Lugosi and the original actor to play Renfield, Dwight Frye, with...

In “Renfield,” the title character, played by Nicholas Hoult, is desperate to end his centuries’ long codependent relationship with his master, the legendary vampire Count Dracula (Nicolas Cage). Director Chris McKay and writers Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ridley knew they needed to quickly establish the long history of Renfield and Dracula from the outset, and their method to do so led to one of the most delightfully entertaining and technically impressive openings in horror movie history — and they reached back into horror movie history to achieve it.
The prologue that begins “Renfield” takes us through the film’s core relationship by placing the actors in scenes from Tod Browning’s 1931 “Dracula,” the first of the classic Universal monster movies that inspired and influenced McKay.
The montage of classic moments in which Cage and Hoult take the place of Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye is both an affectionate tribute and an effective means of exposition,...

Alexander Payne, one of our best and most inventive filmmakers, is thinking big about being small. In Downsizing, a bracing comedy of shocking gravity, Payne and longtime writing partner Jim Taylor posit a future where human beings are offered the chance to shrink down to about five-inches in size and thereby be less of a burden on the besieged environment. And the money part's not bad either in a world where a little truly does go a long way. Any volunteers?

When visual effects supervisor James E. Price met with Alexander Payne regarding Downsizing—his first film in which visual effects play a major role—Price expressed his desire to work on the film, calling it a dream job. “Why?” Payne inquired. “It doesn’t have a lot of the traditional things maybe associated with visual effects.” But this is precisely the reason why Price had to be involved. Having worked on blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings and Pacific Rim, Price…...

I first met Tom Rosenthal in the 1970s in Secker and Warburg's offices in Carlisle Street, Soho. I had been commissioned by Tom's predecessor, James Price, to write a kind of handy encyclopedia of film. It would have entries on leading people, on technical terms, on styles, genres and studios. But modest. Sensible. Publishable. Then, in the writing, things got out of hand. I started by writing about the people, and the essays that emerged were not just longer than intended, they were far more personal, opinionated and other than sensible. I could not help myself. But I did think that I had to show what I had to Secker's so that they could scream (as was their right), scold me and perhaps abandon the entire venture. That meant going to see Tom.

The 1903 black-and-white film may be jerky, but the Danish ballerina's technique still impresses a century after its recording

Ellen Price, the early-20th-century Danish ballerina, has two claims to immortality. Firstly as the model for Edvard Eriksen's statue of The Little Mermaid, the tourist face of Copenhagen; and secondly as one of the very first ballerinas whose dancing has been preserved on film.
Price belonged to one of Denmark's great performing dynasties, founded by an English circus rider and pantomime artist, James Price, who settled in Copenhagen in the late 18th century. Price's descendents became dominant throughout Danish theatre and ballet: his granddaughter Juliette was the first ballerina to dance Giselle for the Royal Danish Ballet: Ellen's mother and father (Juliette's cousin) were themselves principal dancers, and Ellen made her debut with the company in 1895.

Taking a break from Comic-Con, it’s time to look back at a movie that made quite the splash in San Diego last year and is currently in theaters, Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. At that time, there was but a trailer for the giant monsters vs. giant robots movie, but the buzz was electric. One calendar year later, the film has made it’s way to theaters and has opened much softer than expected by the Warner Bros. accounting department. All the same, it’s a movie I, myself said was more fun “than anything else we’re going to see towering above us on the big screen this summer” in our review. One of the biggest draws of Pacific Rim: the scope of the action and the scale of its participants. Most of which is accomplished via the mastery of the folks at Industrial Light & Magic and Spectral Motion, among...

Who wants to win passes to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim?
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are synched via a neural bridge, called “The Drift.” But as the enemy grows more powerful with each attack, even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.
On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are...

Yeah, in A Few Best Men I play a lesbian character. I played the lesbian sister of the bride who ends up kissing a dude at the end, but she was like a full-on lesbian in that. And I beat out famous Australian lesbians for the role.

Step Up 3
Let me start off this review by saying fairly that the film “Step Up 3″ is definitely not my cup of tea. But I don’t really think the movie is aimed towards myself, but rather people that are interested and participate in the human ritual of rhythmic motion known as dancing.
Here’s the story: Moose (Adam G. Sevani) & his lifelong best friend Camille (Alyson Stoner) have just started school at Nyu. Moose’s parents are saying goodbye & couldn’t be happier that their son has set aside his foolish desire to dance to instead focus on earning his Engineering degree.
No sooner do his parents leave him be does Moose stumble onto an impromptu dance-off. Moose injects himself into the contest & his moves catch the eye of Luke (Rick Malambri), an amateur filmmaker & dancer who heads up The House of Pirates, a local dance squad...

20th Century-Fox has released The A-Team, the 2010 big screen adaptation of the iconic 1980s NBC TV series, here presented on Blu-ray with both the original theatrical version and a new unrated, extended cut. Balls-out and relentless, this was one helluva action film that blasted through theaters this summer and though it was critically, less than admirable, this movie was surprisingly spry, often funny big-scale action flick.
This adrenaline-fueled thrill ride stars Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Sharlto Copley. Convicted by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit, a daring team of former Special Forces soldiers must utilize their unique talents to break out of prison and tackle their toughest mission yet, “who framed them?” It’s going to take guts, split-second timing and an arsenal of explosive weapons…this is a job for The A-Team!

The dance music star, real name Clifford Price, was devastated to see the 23 year old jailed after continued efforts to help Jamie turn his life around. He tells Britain's Daily Express, "My son was locked up for 21 years last week and we are still coming to terms with it."
"It is such a tragedy as that family has lost a child and it's just a terrible thing that happened. I tried everything I could with him, I tried to get him into music, offered him money to do anything he wanted but he just chose another route."

The son of British DJ-turned-actor Goldie has been sentenced to life imprisonment for stabbing a man to death. Jamie Price was involved in an altercation with rival gang member Marlon Morris outside a fast-food restaurant in Wolverhampton, England in 2008.
Morris was knifed four times and taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from a stab wound to the heart. Price was later arrested, and was found guilty of murder at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, September 6.
On Tuesday, Judge John Milmo QC told the 23 year old he would serve at least 21 years behind bars for the vicious crime. Sentencing Price, the judge said, "In a case of this kind there are no winners, only losers. Everyone involved here has lost, and lost in a very significant sense, whether the sentence is one of life or one of death."...

At Dragon*Con, the 4-day geek convention held in Atlanta, Ga, every Labor Day weekend, people in costumes greatly out number those in plain clothes, panelists often attend the fan parties and the droids serve you alcohol.
Ok, actually only one droid: the appropriately named BAR2D2.
The droid has a 15-beer capacity that's proudly displayed around a neon-lit carousel and features a "beer" elevator that pushes the bottles up to the top for consumption. Just above that is the hard liquor mixing stack -- a 6-bottle shot station that can serve about 100 drinks without stopping to refill the booze. Using the LazyDrinker software, BAR2 can mix about 5,000 drink combinations on demand with access to a laptop computer (and soon an iPhone), according to creator Jamie Price.
And of course, there's a remote controlled Ice, Garnish & Juice drawer to make your alcoholic beverages served exactly like they are from boring humans behind a counter.

The Aurora Picture Show and Musiqa, the contemporary music group, present a night of film, music and lighting. The film portion of the night will include two short films. The first is the 2005 collaboration between director Miguel Arteta and writer Miranda July. The film is Are You The Favorite Person of Anyone?, in which John C. Reilly asks three people — Mike White, Miranda July and Chuy Chavez — the titular question.
The second short film is the disarmingly charming People in Order, directed by Lenka Clayton and James Price. I’ve seen it and it’s a wonderfully simple concept executed perfectly: 100 people, ordered according to their age of 1 to 100, stand simply in their own solitary frame, state their age and bang a drum. Sounds simple, but really fascinating.
