The "John Wick" franchise isn't just a montage of John Woo-inspired gun-fu combat sequences. The series has used just about everything imaginable to craft intense action scenes, from dogs to, as was the case with "John Wick: Chapter 4," fast-moving vehicles. In fact, cars and other forms of transport have been utilized by franchise director Chad Stahelski throughout the four "John Wick" films, and not just to choreograph fight-scene style "car-fu" sequences.
All the way back in 2014's "John Wick," the titular hitman reluctantly returns to his former illicit lifestyle after his puppy is killed and his Ford Mustang Boss 429 stolen. That first entry in the saga of Baba Yaga saw Wick get revenge for the aforementioned pup killing, but his Mustang remained unaccounted for. Which is why, when "John Wick: Chapter 2" arrived, there was some unfinished business to take care of.

Consider it a spoiler for the squeamish: by the time the first act of Cate Shortland’s “Black Widow” has wrapped, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans should prepare to be walloped by the kind of gritty violence not often found in the franchise’s films and series. In short, prepare for not only broken bones, but for unflinching shots of said crushed and snapped cartilage. And that’s before one character snaps a foe’s wrist like a twig.
While Cate Shortland’s film is rated PG-13 like the majority of its franchise brethren, “Black Widow” does push the envelope when it comes to its depiction of on-screen violence and fighting sequences in new ways. As Shortland told IndieWire during a recent interview, that level of realistic — at least for an MCU title — violence was always part of her pitch for the film, an element that goes hand in hand with...

Over a long career that stretches back 25 years, stuntman and stunt coordinator-turned-second-unit-director and actor Darrin Prescott has choreographed many a spectacular car chase and race in such testosterone-fueled movies as “Drive,” “Deadpool 2,” “Baby Driver” and “The Bourne Ultimatum,” which won him a Screen Actors Guild award as part of the stunt ensemble.
But when director James Mangold called him up to play famous racer Bob Bondurant and supervise the second-unit action crew for “Ford v Ferrari,” he knew it’d be a special job.
“He loved what we’d done on ‘Baby Driver,’ and when I asked him how we were going to handle all the classic race cars on this, he just said, ‘We’re going to build ‘em,’” Prescott says.
This was music to Prescott’s ears, as “Ford v Ferrari” chronicles the story of race car legends Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and Ken Miles (Christian Bale...

You likely know them as the directors behind films like “Hobbs & Shaw,” “Atomic Blonde,” “Deadpool 2,” and the three “John Wick” films, but Chad Stahelski and David Leitch made their mark on action films long before they became A-list directors. In 1997, the ambitious stunt performers started action design company 87Eleven with a dream of becoming leaders in practical action.
Keanu Reeves, whose collaboration with the duo dates back to when Stahelski was his stunt double on the first “Matrix,” has watched how his creative partners in the “John Wick” series built their business.
“When they started the company and then started to get a reputation for second unit directing, it’s because they brought that storytelling into it,” Reeves told IndieWire. “The way that they go about doing action was very story oriented with the characters: What’s the situation, what’s the story the director wants to tell? “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” won three of its leading seven bids at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards on Sunday (Jan. 28), including Best Picture. While Martin McDonagh lost the Best Director race to Sean Baker (“The Florida Project”) he did win for his script. And his leading lady, Frances McDormand, picked up another prize on her seemingly inevitable march to the Oscars. (See the full list of winners below).
However, Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) hit a bump in the road as he lost Best Actor to one of his Oscar rivals — Timothee Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name”) — and the award for British or Irish actor of the year to another, Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”). Oscar hopeful Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water”) won that homegrown award on the distaff side. And “Dunkirk” claimed Best British/Irish Film over, among others, “Three Billboards.”

While I was lukewarm about John Wick, I loved the hell out of John Wick 2. It was bigger, badder, and much more brutal. The stunt work, thus, followed suit. One of the coolest sequences was the opening car chase where Wick takes on all those Russian mob goons, just to initiate a truce. Well, if you wondered how they did that, you're in luck, as Darrin Prescott, the stunt coordinator and second unit director breaks... Read More...

If you’re a fan of the John Wick franchise, you can direct a lot of your enthusiastic, whole-armed applause toward Darrin Prescott. He’s the defiantly calm man behind the maniacal, adrenaline-fueled stunts in both John Wick movies. In a new video from Vanity Fair, Prescott breaks down John Wick 2’s opening car chase with the same casual ease an accountant might explain their job to a class of freshman on career day—but it’s doubtful anyone would nod off for this.
The eight-minute video shows Prescott using an interactive monitor to literally draw your attention to the myriad ways in which he cleverly destroys beautiful vehicles. You get to see how they shot a “car gangbang,” took their best guess as to how hard to slam a car sideways into a building, and sent a motorcycle careening toward the camera. At one point Prescott methodically explains...

Some very real high-octane car chases have helped steer Edgar Wright's Baby Driver, which opens today, to enthusiastic reviews (98 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes). "We tried to do everything in camera; 99 percent was practical," confirmed Darrin Prescott, the film's stunt coordinator and second-unit director.
Baby Driver follows Ansel Elgort as getaway driver Baby, who drives to his own soundtrack — an idea that instantly clicked for Prescott. "When Edgar first told me about this project, I wished I had come up with it," he said. "The idea of choreographing car chases to music sounded perfect to me....

“He’s a good kid, and a devil behind the wheel.”
That’s Baby (Ansel Elgort), an innocent-looking getaway driver who gets hardened criminals from point A to point B, with daredevil flair and a personal soundtrack running through his head. That’s because he’s got his escape route plotted to the beat of specific tunes that go from his well-curated iPod straight to his ears, and which translate into expertly timed hairpin turns, gear shifts and evasive maneuvers that leave his passengers on the ride of their lives.
Which makes Baby Driver, with its mixture of mph and music, the newest explosion of genre-crossing excitement from writer-director Edgar Wright, an action thriller unlike any other.

Gerard Butler is to headline a new action movie by the name of Snow Ponies...
Whilst work continues developing a third film in the Olympus Has Fallen series, Gerard Butler is set to busy himself in a new action movie, Snow Ponies. This one’s written by Pat Healy, and the script for it made the 2006 Blacklist of the best unproduced screenplays. The movie is now set to press ahead, with Darrin Prescott directing. It’ll be his directorial debut, following lots of second unit work on the likes of Captain America: Civil War, John Wick and Drive.
Snow Ponies tells the story of seven hardened men (it says here), as they travel across an unpleasant terrain to deliver a package. No idea what the package is, and seemingly, neither do they. Their journey is punctuated by encounters with bandits and assorted obstacles. And they must choose between loyalty to each other,...

Variety is reporting that Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther movie has drafted up plans for a suitably huge chase sequence in Busan, South Korea.
Citing sources from within local production company Mr. Romance Film, the report claims said sequence is a thrilling car chase scene involving the protagonist (Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa) and the villain (Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger, perhaps?). More than 700 extras will populate the scene, with Variety going on to note that “helicopter(s) and guns (firing blanks)” will also feature.
Darrin Prescott, second unit director on Marvel’s Black Panther, reportedly approached the Powers That Be about using the fishing port of Busan as a potential shooting location last year, and the rest is history. Thanks to the likes of Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange, the McU is beginning to incorporate scores of international locations, and it’s refreshing to learn that Coogler’s Black Panther...

The real-time gimmick can be a dicey proposition for filmmakers. More often than not, the result is a less-than-satisfying attempt to drum up a little extra tension at the expense of characters and story. Still, that doesn’t stop them trying, with stunt co-ordinators and second unit directors Darrin Prescott and Wade Allen hiring Aaron Eckhart to star in their switch to first unit work with Live! Grand Theft Parsons writer Jeremy Drysdale came up with the script for this one, which finds Eckhart as a disgraced cop called Kyle Penny. He’ll have to team up with an ambitious young online reporter...

No one enjoys being on the receiving end of Mark Wahlberg’s fist. “Most of the actors are very method. But they don’t like being method with me kicking the sh–t out of them. They like being method kicking the sh–t out of someone else,” Wahlberg says in this exclusive clip from a behind-the-scenes featurette on the Contraband DVD/Blu-ray, out April 24.
And Wahlberg kicks himself into shape, too. “Working with Mark’s great,” stunt coordinator Darrin Prescott adds. “He’s one of those guys … he doesn’t need much from the stunt department.”

“Drive” hits theaters today (September 16), and director Nicolas Winding Refn’s stylized, synth-soundtracked action flick is one of the best things you’ll see this year – just trust us. We were blown away by the story of Driver (Ryan Gosling) – a stuntman by day and a getaway wheelman by night – who falls for a vulnerable neighbor in peril (Carey Mulligan), and finds himself embroiled in a twisted heist involving her husband (Oscar Isaac). Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman and Christina Hendricks deliver in top-notch supporting roles, and Albert Brooks is absolutely menacing as the villainous Bernie Rose.
The movie is chock full of elaborate stunts, which got us thinking – what was it like to coordinate the action of “Drive”? We sat down with Darrin Prescott, the film’s Stunt Coordinator and Second Unit Director, to find out. Darrin has been a member of the stunt crew on 95 films, including “Independence Day,...

Ryan Gosling is in the proverbial driver’s seat when it comes to his career. To say he is hot right now is an understatement. After charming in Crazy Stupid Love, Gosling has two films that will heat up the fall: George Clooney’s The Ides of March and Drive. Drive is an astounding piece of filmmaking and firmly establishes Gosling as a Hollywood superstar. Gosling sat down with Movie Fanatic in Los Angeles right before heading to Toronto to promote Drive and Ides of March (don’t miss our Gosling in Toronto Ides interview coming soon!).
Gosling first caught audiences’ attention in, of all things, The Mickey Mouse Club opposite none other than Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. The Canadian-born actor is now an Oscar nominee and a certified movie star after his turn in the unforgettable The Notebook.
In Drive, audiences get to see Gosling in a whole new light.
