Beware the shrubbery! 1951.s Day Of The Triffids is one of the most beloved science fiction books of all time, telling the story about the collapse of a civilization in the wake of collective blindness prompted by dangerous unknown plants. The story was a product of its time and environment, and the politics were clumsily adapted for a camp classic 1962 film, but John Wyndham.s original story seems ripe for a re-imagining - one much grislier than the other interpretations of the story. Now that new adaptation has found a director. Deadline reports that Mike Newell is onboard to helm a new interpretation of the classic for Sam Raimi.s Ghost House Pictures and producers Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Michael Preger, with Murphy.s partner at Angry Films Susan Montford executive producing. This would be Newell.s first foray into the horror genre and science fiction - unless you...

Mike Newell ("Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire," "Donnie Brasco") is set to direct the latest film adaptation of John Wyndham's iconic 1951 sci-fi novel "The Day Of The Triffids" at Ghost House Pictures.
Triffids are an intelligent and aggressive plant species with a whip-like venomous sting, a plant that mankind is cultivating for its oils.
When a global meteor shower renders most of humanity blind, civilisation collapses and those few who can still see attempt to establish a colony in the countryside.
The story was previously adapted on film in 1963 and twice for British television in 1981 to acclaim and in 2009 to derision. "Luther" creator Neil Cross has scripted the new take which will likely stick close to Wyndham's novel.
Sam Raimi, Robert G. Tapert, Don Murphy, Mark Gordon and Michael Preger will produce.

Since then there have been a number TV films also based on the source material.

We've been talking about a new version of the sci-fi classic The Day of the Triffids for some time now, and it finally sounds as if it's gonna happen. At least we hope. We've been fond of the Triffids for a really long time now, and they're definitely overdue for their due.
Deadline reports that Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Great Expectations) has been set to helm The Day of the Triffids, the adaptation of the classic sci-fi book by John Wyndham that was scripted by Neil Cross for Ghost House Pictures.

Exclusive: Mike Newell has been set to helm The Day Of The Triffids, the adaptation of the classic sci-fi book by John Wyndham that was scripted by Neil Cross for Ghost House Pictures. Those sparked about this development know the logline: After a comet shower blinds most of the world’s population, those with sight must battle alien plants, known as triffids, bent on destroying mankind. The film’s being produced by Ghost House, Mark Gordon, Don Murphy, and Michael Preger, and Murphy’s Angry Films partner Susan Montford will be executive producer. Newell is repped by Wme and UK-based Independent Talent. The book was previously turned into a 1962 film and most recently a 2009 miniseries that starred Dougray Scott and Joely Richardson. Newell seems an inspiring choice for the material. The helmer of Four Weddings And A Funeral, Donnie Brasco and Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire last helmed Great Expectations.

The film nearly didn’t happen. When the project came to producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford at the height of Twilight’s popularity, they resisted reading Richelle Mead’s books, fearing vampire overkill. When their fellow producer Michael Preger wore them down, they realised what they’d missed. “Eventually we read it, and it was amazing. We knew we had to be involved in it,” says Murphy. High school just got a whole lot scarier. The Weinstein Company has released the very first trailer for the upcoming movie adaptation of Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy, which follows Rose (played by Zoey Deutch) as she trains to become a supernatural bodyguard for her best friend Lissa (Lucy Fry), who also happens to be a vampire princess.
Here’s an official synopsis of the film:
Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world. Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. This is her story.

Efm 2013: The Weinstein Co. Acquires Blood Sisters: Vampire Academy for Valentine's Day 2014 Release
In one of the biggest U.S. deals ever to emerge from the European Film Market in Berlin, The Weinstein Co. (no doubt hoping for a franchise) has won a bidding war for Stateside rights to Mark Waters' adaptation of Blood Sisters, the first book in Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series.
Per THR, insiders say the deal is valued at over $30 million between the acquisition fee and marketing commitment. TWC struck the pact with financiers Reliance Entertainment and Im Global and has a rolling option on subsequent installments. At least two Hollywood studios were bidding for U.S. rights to the movie, which we learned last week will star Zooey Deutch, Lucy Fry, and Danila Kozlovsky (more on that here). The script was written by Daniel Waters (Heathers), brother of director Mark (Mean Girls).

Neil Cross has been set by Ghost House Pictures to write The Day of the Triffids, based on the classic sci-fi horror novel written by John Wyndam and the 1962 film Invasion of the Triffids. In the original film, a meteorite shower produces a glow that blinds anyone looking at it. The majority of the population is left sightless, and prey to the Triffid plants that emerged in spore form from a previous meteor storm. Mark Gordon, Michael Preger and Don Murphy are partnering with Ghost House principals Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert to produce. Ghost House principals Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake will executive produce alongside Susan Montford. Cross created and writes the terrific Idris Elba BBC TV drama Luther, and he scripted two Guillermo Del Toro-produced genre films: Mama, staring Jessica Chastain, which is in post-production; and an actioner called Midnight Delivery which is on the fast track.

Two huge bit of sci-fi movie news for ya today, both involving remakes of sci-fi classics. The first one has Sam Raimi landing the rights to yet another remake of John Wyndham’s “The Day of the Triffids”. Deadline has that news: The film will be produced by Ghost House, the partnership between Mandate, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. The deal is seven-figures and I’ve heard it’s the most that Mandate has paid for a project package. Raimi wants to direct it; the original was one of his favorite films as a boy. Raimi and Tapert will board the producer roster, joining Michael Preger, Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan Montford, and Mark Gordon, who previously worked with Raimi on A Simple Plan. Apparently Raimi and company won the rights to the remake over Warner Bros., who was trying to package their remake with David Yates (“Harry Potter...

Mandate Pictures has won and expensive bidding war for the rights to The Day of the Triffids. Ghost House, is the partnership between Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Mandate Pictures. Raimi has wanted to direct this picture for a long time since the original film was one of his favorites as a child.
Included in the acquisition package is the the original scifi novel by John Wyndham, which was the basis for the 1962 film. According to the description of the novel a shower of meteorites causes 99% of the population to go blind and unleashes Triffids.
Triffids are aggressive and seemingly intelligent plants that are able to move about on their three "legs", appear to communicate with each other and possess a deadly whip-like poisonous sting that enables them to kill and feed on the rotting carcasses of their victims.

Deadline reports that Mandate Pictures has picked up The Day of the Triffids , which will be produced by Ghost House Pictures, the partnership between Mandate, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. The site says that Raimi wants to direct the film. He'll produce with Tapert, Michael Preger, Angry Films' Don Murphy and Susan Montford, and Mark Gordon ( A Simple Plan ). Based on a 1951 novel by John Wyndham, The Day of the Triffids tells the story of genetically engineered hyper-intelligent plants that, after most of humanity is blinded by a meteor shower, begin to attack and devour the world's population. The story was previously adapted (albeit loosely) into a British film version in 1961 and also spawned two television serials in 1981 and 2009.

Mandate Pictures have won the movie rights package to Day of the Triffids in an auction that ended at seven figures. They'll be working in tandem with Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert's Ghost House Pictures, with the word on the street being that Raimi wants to direct the Triffids himself. As previously reported, the deal was being shopped around by producers Michael Preger and Don Murphy. Preger has acquired the rights to John Wyndham's novel over a period of years, and was also behind John Carpenter's 1995 Village of the Damned (based on the 1960 film, which is based on Wyndham's The Midwich Cuckoos). Also present at the auction were Warner Bros, who wanted to set up a Triffids project with Harry Potter director David Yates. Mandate won out though, paying the most they've ever laid out for a "project package". The "original film", directed in the UK in...

Deadline is reporting that Mandate Pictures, on behalf of Sam Raimi, has won a bidding war for the rights to produce The Day Of The Triffids, with Raimi in line to direct (as it was is favorite film as a child). A shower of meteorites produces a glow that blinds anyone that looks at it. As it was such a beautiful sight, most people were watching, and as a consequence, 99% of the population go blind. In the original novel, this chaos results in the escape of some Triffids: experimental plants that are capable of moving themselves around and attacking people. In the 1962 film, however, the Triffids are not experimental plants. Instead they are space aliens whose spores have arrived in an earlier meteor shower. Raimi and Tapert will board the producer roster, joining Michael Preger, Angry Films' Don Murphy and Susan Montford, and Mark Gordon.

There’s a crucial difference between the Us TV mini series of The Shining and the Stanley Kubrick masterpiece and that is topiary.
Apparently impossible to film in 1980, the topiary animals in the grounds of the Overlook Hotel which stalked the unfortunate Torrance family were resurrected for the Stephen King approved mini series seventeen years later and it looked terrible, creating a tension vacuum into which also fell credibility and care.
The thing is that the topiary animals were great on the page, and whether Kubrick ever looked into incorporating them into his version I don’t know – what I do know is sometime King’s words are far more powerful when left on the page. So, with that in mind we come to this bit of news – there is a new version of John Wyndham’s classic 1951 novel The Day of the Triffids on its way to the big screen.

John Wyndham's classic sci-fi novel "The Day of the Triffids" is finally getting the big screen treatment, and its producers told Variety that they decided it was time to make the story into a feature film because of the advances in 3D technology, which we will willingly credit to "Avatar."
"We are confident that with the new technological advances in 3D production, we have the tools with which to create Wyndham's iconic vision of Armageddon," said producer Michael Preger, who also worked on the 2009 BBC1 miniseries version of the story.
"Day of the Triffids" was first published in 1951, and is set in the future after a bizarre meteor shower leaves much of the world's population blind. Genetically altered plants named Triffids, which have three legs and contain poisonous venom, have started to encroach on humanity, and it is up to several remaining sighted people to try to lead humanity to survival.

John Wyndham is one of those authors that film and TV producers love to re-visit, and one of his most-adapted novels, mobile plant thriller The Day of the Triffids, is now in the hands of Transformers producer Don Murphy and Michael Preger, who has produced more than one Wyndham story in the past. The Triffids, for the three of you that really don’t know the story, follows a devastating time for humanity when the discovery of aggressive flora coincides with a meteor shower that blinds a good proportion of the Earth’s population. Our sighted hero, Bill Masen, is in hospital after being attacked by one of the rampaging stalk-ers and must try to help fellow survivors make it through an England now dominated by the plants."This original classic has still to be successfully envisioned on the screen," Murphy tells Variety. It was only last year that the BBC broadcast a new adaptation of John Wyndham's 1951 sci-fi novel The Day of the Triffids.
The miniseries starred Dougray Scott alongside Joely Richardson, Eddie Izzard, Brian Cox, Vanessa Redgrave and Jason Priestley. Its executive producers included Michael Preger.
But Preger isn't done with the killer plants just yet. He is now working on a 3D feature film version in a collaboration with Transformers producer Don Murphy.
Variety reports that Preger acquired motion picture rights to Wyndham's novel in 1991 and that he and Murphy have been exploring the idea of a film for over a decade. Recent breakthroughs in 3D convinced them it was the right time to do it.
Preger said: "We are confident that with the new technological advances in 3D production we have the tools with which to create Wyndham's iconic vision of armageddon."

Day of the Triffids, despite its silly name, sounds like a pretty awesome story. Plant life on Earth capable of fighting back against aggressors leaves most of the world blind after an .unprecedented cosmic event.. Sounds pretty rad, eh? The only problem will be forgetting about The Happening which approached the same principle of angry plants and failed miserably in execution. This time around the film is being driven by Transformers producer Don Murphy who.ll be working with Michael Preger on this adaptation of the John Wyndham novel, first published in 1951. According to Variety, the project has been on the shelf for a while but since there has been such vast improvement in the world of 3D, the producers now feel that it.s the time to dust this puppy off. The real funny part is that in the Variety piece, Preger spends some talking about how now is...

I love this news though part of me knows this adaptation will not be as good as the BBC series from the 80s.
Variety is reporting that producer Don Murphy (Transformers) is joining forces with Michael Preger on an updated version of the sci-fi classic The Day of the Triffids.
The movie project will be based on John Wyndham’s novel, which was first published in 1951 and revolves around a global crisis stemming from plants displaying aggressive behavior.
That description sounds lame so I will try my best to make this project seem a lot cooler to many of you. Think 28 Days Later meets The Walking Dead meets Jericho minus the zombie stuff and add in the blindness. The BBC did a series adaptation of this back in the 80s, then again in 2009, but the older one was awesome. The series showed how two events that converged together to change the face of humanity.

It's the book adaptation that won't die! Even after producing the BBC's recent lackluster mini-series, it looks like Producer Don Murphy still thinks there's steam in John Wyndham's man vs. plant apocalypse story.
In a talk with Variety, Transformers Producer Don Murphy said of "Day of the Triffids" that "this original classic has still to be successfully envisioned on the screen," and that he plans on spearheading a big budget 3D version for cinemas with help from Michael Preger (Village of the Damned).

Don Murphy and Michael Preger are set to produce a new 3D film adaptation of John Wyndham's iconic 1951 sci-fi novel "The Day of the Triffids" says Variety.
Triffids are an intelligent and aggressive plant species with a whip-like venomous sting, a plant that mankind is cultivating for its oils. When a global meteor shower renders most of humanity blind, civilisation collapses and those few who can still see attempt to establish a colony in the countryside.
The story was previously adapted on film in 1962 and for British television in 1981. Preger also produced a 2009 British TV mini-series version of 'Triffids' which starred Dougray Scott, Eddie Izzard and Vanessa Redgrave.
All three previous adaptations were limited by technology to make the plants convincingly threatening and thus convey the true dark horror and suspense elements of the novel. The pair however are "confident that with the new technological advances in 3D production,...

Don Murphy ( Transformers , Splice ) and Michael Preger are spearheading a new effort to faithfully adapt the tale, but this time in 3D. This is Preger's second go at the material. He produced the 2009 BBC Triffids series starring Dougray Scott. Preger also produced another Wyndham story, John Carpenter's 1995 Village of the Damned . Only a few weeks ago, it was announced that Preger had optioned the rights to Richelle Mead's six-part Vampire Academy series of young adult novels through his Preger Entertainment production company. Now, the producer of Village of the Damned has enlisted Murphy (Apt Pupil) to aid him in bringing Mead's sexy vampire characters to the big screen.
