Oh happy day! 2D cell animation is not dead, thanks in part to people like animator Robb Pratt. In a follow up to his massively viewed Superman Classic, the animator has a mix of styles on display, particularly the Paul Dini look mashed up again backgrounds that recall the old Fleischer stuff. You can bet I'll be contacting Mr. Pratt for a few words on his work soon. For anybody who remembers the Jonny Quest stop motion fanfilm I posted, you know this stuff is what I live for. It's almost unfair to call these "fanfilms" since an obviously pro-level of artistry has gone into the work. Pratt does have pro credits under his belt, with work on titles like Tarzan 2 and The Emperor's...

Animator Robb Pratt wowed us with his first animated Superman short, and now he is back with his sophomore effort. Actor John Newton, who played the Boy of Steel in the live-action television series The Adventures of Superboy once again lends his voice for Superman. John also pulls double duty as Bizarro, and his wife is back as the voice of Lois Lane. Make sure to stick around after the credits to see some great behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the animated short. Below is the original that started it all.

Check out this fantastic new Superman animated short film created by Disney animator Robb Pratt (Pocahontas, Tarzan), called Bizarro Classic. The short is traditionally animated and focuses on Bizarro Superman. This isn't the first Superman film from Pratt. Last year he made another awesome short called Superman Classic. I absolutely love the 1940s setting and wonderful animation style. I'd love to see a feature film inspired by this! I think it's a lot better than what Warner Bros. animation has been creating for their DC Comics dvd adaptations. There's more life in the characters.
Watch the Superman fan film, and let us know if you'd like to see DC Entertainment start doing a little something different with their animated movies.

We know that we're only a few years away from seeing Zack Snyder's Superman: Man of Steel in all of its glory (we hope), but in the meantime, let's step back in time to check out Superman Classic. Animator Robb Pratt (Home on the Range, "The Replacements") really loves Superman and decided to direct his own self-animated short called Superman Classic. The footage is also set to music from the old Superman Saturday matinee serials and he even got John Newton, who played Superboy in the 1980s TV series, to voice Clark Kent. It's a quick watch and so fun to see, so check out Pratt's animated Superman short below. I owe thanks to Heat Vision and 24 Frames for both originally posting this video. Not only is it great to see homemade hand-drawn animation thriving like this in the digital age, but it's wonderful to see Pratt put his...

[1] Disney animator Robb Pratt [2] has created a short hand-drawn animated Superman fan film which features a 1950's-like sci-fi take with Superman battling a huge robot who is destroying Metropolis. Without credits, the short is under one-minute in length, but still a stunning achievement considering Pratt produced, directed and storyboarded the idea himself, and animated the film with two others. The short is based on classical elements from early in the character's history -- Pratt references the architectural work of Hugh Ferriss [3], and incorporates Mischa Bakaleinikoff’s music from the Superman live-action serial. Pratt worked on animated features like Tarzan, Hercules, Pocahontas, Fantasia 2000 and television series like Kick Buttowski, Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and The Replacements. Clark Kent/Superman is voiced by John Newton, who atarred as a young Clark Kent in the late 1980's television series The Adventures of Superboy. While Zack Snyder's Superman movie...
