Following 118 days on strike, SAG-AFTRA secured a deal with the studios that was worth over $1B that it said had ““unprecedented provisions”.
But the guild isn’t resting on its laurels, it’s already looking ahead to its next contract with the AMPTP in 2026.
Over the weekend, SAG-AFTRA’s EVP, Linda Powell, LA VP Jodi Long, who is also LA Local President and SAG-AFTRA VP, Actors/Performers Shari Belafonte were in Denver at SeriesFest to discuss the contract and what’s next for the guild.
The trio discussed the contract gains, including new money for healthcare, protections on AI, new measures on self-tapes and the guild’s new streaming residual bonus.
But they also highlighted the fact that there’s another contract to negotiate in 2026.
Powell said she was “feeling ready for the next fight”.

New York Women in Film & Television hosted its 44th annual Muse Awards on Wednesday afternoon in New York City. More than 700 guests gathered at Cipriani 42nd Street to celebrate the achievements of honorees Fran Drescher, Alex Borstein, Kyra Sedgwick, Tantoo Cardinal, Latasha Gillespie, Millicent Simmonds, Michèle Stephenson and Oscar-winner Raney Aronson-Rath.
SAG-AFTRA executive vice president, Linda Powell, accepted an award on behalf of Drescher, who wasn’t able to make it to the gala due to her father’s recent death.
Powell read directly from a statement written by the SAG-AFTRA president, who pointed out personal challenges she faced in 2023 during the historic Hollywood strikes. “I couldn’t escape the misogyny that plagued press coverage of the strike and our negotiations,” Drescher wrote. “It was disgusting, but I refused and will always refuse to conform to masculine expectations.

SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher called out the misogyny that dogged her in strike negotiations and coverage, saying it was “disgusting.” She’s opined on that before but remarks today met a particularly receptive audience at the annual gala of New York Women In Film & Television where she was honored.
Drescher wasn’t able to attend in person as her father recently passed away. Her parents, who “instilled in me the importance of never crossing the picket line,” were both present in her speech, which was read by SAG-AFTRA executive VP Linda Powell at the Nywift Muse Awards.
“It was a privilege, and certainly very challenging at times, to be a woman who was the focal point of the global labor movement,” Drescher’s statement said. “Of course, I couldn’t escape the misogyny … But I refused, I will always refuse, to conform to masculine expectations.”

SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher resurfaced the union’s 118-day strike in remarks at the guild’s award ceremony on Saturday night, saying that union members “set the trajectory for many generations to come” during the work stoppage.
Drescher called the actors union’s approximately 160,000 members the “champions” of the night in a speech during the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards. “You survived the longest strike in our union’s history with courage and conviction. SAG-AFTRA kicked off its National Convention 2023 this week under the banner “Future Forward Union Power,” and they closed up shop pretty quickly in the same vein.
Just over after the gathering began, SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher hit the pause button as it was announced Saturday afternoon that shuttered negotiations with the studios and streamers would re-start on Oct. 24. “While it’s disappointing to have to adjourn the convention early, the Negotiating Committee must immediately get back to the hard work of preparing to secure a fair contract,” Drescher said.
Initially set to run from Oct. 20 – 24, the 2023 convention will start up again once new dates are decided upon by the Guild’s National Board. SAG-AFTRA has been on strike 100 days as of today, with the first set of renewed talks running from Oct. 2 – 11 before the AMPTP walked away and “suspended” deliberations.

After a slow but steady restart of talks on a new contract, negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) are expected to “ramp up” and explore deeper issues and sticking points in the bargaining agreement, three insiders with knowledge of the studio side of negotiations told TheWrap.
According to the insiders, the first two days of resumed negotiations this past Monday and Wednesday were largely focused on the CEOs who led negotiations with the Writers Guild of America — Disney’s Bob Iger, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav, NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley, and Netflix’s Ted Sarandos — getting up to speed with the leaders of the actors guild’s negotiating committee.

Ezra Knight has been reelected president of SAG-AFTRA’s New York Local in a landslide victory that also gave his running mates a clean sweep of the election. Knight received nearly 73% of the votes cast in a four-person race for president. His four vice presidential running mates – Linda Powell, Anthony Rapp, Jim Kerr and Liz Zazzi – were also elected.
Knight is the leader of the local’s ruling Usan party that endorsed the unity slate led by SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher and Secretary-Treasurer Joely Fisher, who also won landslide victories last night.
Knight was also the top vote-getter in the NY local’s national board races, and here too his Usan running mates won every race, including Avis Boone, Christine Bruno, Samantha Mathis, Michael Gaston, Phoebe Jonas, Samantha Macivor and Jim Kerr.
Usan was formed by New York members of SAG and AFTRA who were dedicated to the merger and to “Uniting Screen Actors Nationwide.

Though the WGA and the AMPTP are reportedly back at the negotiating table, the same can’t be said about SAG-AFTRA as the strikes continue.
“We’re ready and waiting for that to happen for us. We’re so ready that even the WGA going in and continuing the negotiations, it’s a sign of hope for us so that hopefully they get their act together — not the WGA, but the AMPTP — and get back to the table,” Ezra Knight, the New York local president for SAG-AFTRA as well as a member of the negotiating committee, told TheWrap at the picket lines on Tuesday.
Linda Powell, who was striking alongside Knight at 30 Rockefeller, echoed his sentiments. Powell is also a member of the negotiating committee as well as vice president of the actors guild’s New York chapter.

Updated with details and more quotes: U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined striking writers and actors on a picket line outside the neighboring Manhattan offices of Netflix and Warner Bros Discovery on Monday morning, and caused as much of a stir as any celebrity spotted at Writers Guild of America or SAG-AFTRA demonstrations in New York City since early May.
Joined by AFL-CIO president Liz Shuler, Ocasio-Cortez (D-ny) gave strikers and their supporters a pep talk and spent about 40 minutes walking a picket line along a block of downtown Manhattan with as many as 200 other marchers. She paused for selfies, handshakes and brief hellos and accepted thanks from other picketers as reporters and photographers hovered nearby.
“Frankly, while this is a fight against AI,” she told the cheering crowd, “more than AI, this is a fight against greed. This is a fight against Wall Street, and this is a fight...

SAG-AFTRA’s New York president Ezra Knight says the actors’ union “agonized” over the decision to go on strike.
“We agonized over this decision because going on strike is a very difficult decision. But once we got across the table from them and saw what they were sending back to us, we collectively agreed that it was not acceptable,” Knight told TheWrap during a picket at 30 Rockefeller Plaza on Monday. “I think they underestimated our resolve and our unity in the room.”
Since the last SAG-AFTRA strike in 2000, the entertainment industry has completely evolved from a technological standpoint with the rise of streaming.
“Back in 1960, it was movie theaters and three [TV] networks,” SAG-AFTRA New York’s vice president Linda Powell said, referring to the last time there was a double strike with actors and writers. “Now, we’re dealing with the way that streaming has upended the way we work,...

Netflix is the first major streamer to report quarterly earnings to Wall Street amid Hollywood’s historic double strike. On Wednesday, analysts will be keenly watching to see how co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters present what investors hope will be a return to growth as its ad tier and password-sharing crackdown spur new subscriptions.
Striking writers and actors will be looking, too, as they argue for what they say is a fair share of profits from streaming.
The direct effects of the first double strike in more than 60 years won’t be visible in the June quarter, which ended before talks between the studios and SAG-AFTRA broke down. But Sarandos and Peters will likely face questions about the impact on the company’s financials and strategy in the months ahead.

SAG-AFTRA is urging Congress to pass the federal Crown Act, designed to prevent unfair workplace treatment of people of color based on hair style or texture.
In what it describes as a strongly-worded statement signed by dozens of performers including Kerry Washington, Zoë Kravitz, Rosario Dawson, Don Cheadle, Niecy Nash-Betts, the entertainment and media union says that discrimination based on hair style or texture “is a destructive practice that has alienated and caused irreparable harm to Black Americans.”
“The Crown Act is a huge step in ending discrimination based on hair in public education and work spaces,” said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. “People should feel free to style their hair how they feel most comfortable without the threat of prejudice and unequal treatment.” Drescher added that “there is still more work to be done to ensure private institutions adopt the protections the Crown Act provides.”

Exclusive: The upcoming pre-Broadway world premiere engagement of A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical in Boston has cast Tony Award nominees Mark Jacoby and Robyn Hurder, and Linda Powell to its cast, producers said today.
Jacoby will play the musical icon as he is now, while the previously announced Will Swenson will portray Diamond as a young man. Jacoby’s casting is the first indication that A Beautiful Noise will include two actors portraying the singer-songwriter.
“Neil Diamond has had a myriad of career highs which are a joy to celebrate, but sometimes as artists we look back and only see the mistakes, the roads not taken, the failures, and the aftermath success can leave behind,” said director Michael Mayer in a statement. “Anthony McCarten’s book for A Beautiful Noise beautifully weaves these two perspectives together: the highs and the lows, looking forward and looking back, the artist...

Exclusive: Dues payable by SAG-AFTRA’s high-earning members will be going up over the next two years, per a resolution passed at the union’s recently-concluded 5th biennial convention. The dues hike will be achieved by increasing the maximum earnings on which members pay their percentage of work dues.
The dues cap on work earnings, which has not been raised since the merger of SAG and AFTRA in 2012, is currently set at $500,000, but will be going up to $750,000 in May of 2022, and to $1 million in May of 2023.
The resolution passed at the convention states:
Whereas, member dues are the main means by which SAG-AFTRA is able to fund its work on behalf of members, and
Whereas, those resources underpin all essential SAG-AFTRA initiatives, including contract negotiations and enforcement, safety protocols and rules, diversity, equity, and inclusion, residuals processing, and countless other activities protecting our members; and

Scott Z. Burns makes his feature directing debut with The Report, a picture that owes a lot to the likes of All the Presidents Men, Spotlight and The Post. And though not quite at the level of some of those films, the film does keep you on the edge of your seat and looking over your shoulder at every turn.
The Report is the kind of film that not only works as a piece of entertainment, but you feel as if you are watching something of importance unfold in front of you. The film leaves you with a strange feeling at the bottom of your stomach, one that can’t help but make you want to dive deeper into the truth behind this film. We...

"I would like us to be more than the country that did 'the report', I'd like us to be the country that made it public." Amazon has released a second, short trailer for The Report, directed by veteran screenwriter Scott Z. Burns. This first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The timely, fascinating film is in the same vein as Spotlight, telling the story of an investigation and "the report" put together by staffer Daniel J. Jones. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, CIA agents begin using extreme interrogation tactics on those they think were behind it. Years later, the government finally looks into the truth of what happened and if there was any benefit. The ensemble cast is lead by Adam Driver as Jones, plus Annette Bening, Jon Hamm, Sarah Goldberg, Michael C. Hall, Douglas Hodge, Fajer Kaisi, Ted Levine, Jennifer Morrison, Tim Blake Nelson, Linda Powell, Matthew Rhys,...

Jones (Adam Driver) is tasked by his boss Senator Dianne Feinstein (Annette Bening) to lead an investigation of the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation Program, which was created in the aftermath of 9/11. Jones’ relentless pursuit of the truth leads to explosive findings that uncover the lengths to which the nation’s top intelligence agency went to destroy evidence, subvert the law, and hide a brutal secret from the American public.

Adam Driver stars as the Staffer poised with investigating accusations of CIA torture following 9/11.
If we can't make more plain current events, then we can at least try to use the gift of hindsight to tell important stories about then and, by effect, now. This is what The Report, an upcoming political drama from writer/director Scott Z. Burns (screenwriter for films like The Bourne Ulimatum and the upcoming Bond flick No Time to Die) with some Oscar buzz, seems poised to do, telling the story of the 2014 Senate Torture Report.

The title of Scott Z. Burns’ new political thriller starring Adam Driver is “The Report,” but in the first trailer and poster for the film, we see the word “Torture” redacted from the record, proving that there’s more to this story than the title suggests.
“The Report” focuses on the aftermath of 9/11 and the investigation into the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation Program.
According to the official description, Driver’s character Daniel J. Jones, under the direction of Senator Dianne Feinstein (Annette Bening), uncovers the lengths to which the nation’s top intelligence agency went to destroy evidence, subvert the law and hide a brutal secret from the American public.
“They waterboarded him 183 times. Everything they got from him was either a lie or something they already had,” Driver reports back to Bening regarding one interrogation. “If something works, why do you have to do it 183 times?” she responds.

CNN reports that the Robertsons of A&E “Duck Dynasty” fame are getting into the gun business. The Robertson family and firearms manufacturer Mossberg will release their own line of guns, 9 shotguns, 2 semiautomatic weapons and a pistol. Mossberg spokeswoman Linda Powell told CNN that they have begun shipping the guns to distributors. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. And they’ve been endowed by their Creator of certain unalienable rights. Those are rights that no government can take from you: to live, be free and pursue happiness,” Phil Robertson, patriarch of the family, said in one of the commercials. “You know what makes me happy ladies and gentlemen? To blow a mallard...

USA network’s six-part series, Political Animals, has just about all the pieces you could hope for. Creator Greg Berlanti is perhaps slightly out of his element, as most will know him from things like Dawson’s Creek, Everwood, and short-lived efforts, Eli Stone and No Ordinary Family (well, and possibly Green Lantern and Wrath of the Titans). It isn’t a resume that leads one to suspect that a politically-charged drama unfolding in the White House is a clear next step, but he’s put together television that people have managed to enjoy.
Now throw in Sigourney Weaver as the prime star, and a nice collection of supporters (including Ellen Burstyn, the always interesting Carla Gugino, and the charismatic James Wolk, just to name a few), and add the fact that it’s a drama-filled walk through a White House with an ex-First Lady serving as Secretary of State,...

Welcome to a potential new feature on the Jiba: Mindhole Blowers, where we troll the Internet and listen to DVD Commentaries of our favorite films and bring you some of the fascinating minutia about them. Because Cameron Crowe is back in the spotlight, with a documentary on Pearl Jam coming out soon, and filming on We Bought a Zoo having already begun, we kick off the series with one of my all-time favorites: Singles:
Citizen Dick's album name, Touch Me, I'm Dick, was a direct reference to a Mudhoney song, "Touch Me, I'm Sick." There was a complete listing of songs on the fictional Citizen Dick album made up by Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament. Chris Cornell ended up writing songs based on each title.
