I just finished another "Community" rewatch, making that number ... um ... maybe it's best if I don't say. Let's just say I'm a fan, even of the "gas leak" year. If you're unfamiliar with that term, it's season 4 of the show. Creator Dan Harmon was fired at the end of season 3, and new showrunners David Guarascio and Moses Port were hired to replace him. Season 4 went a little off the rails. It's still pretty fun, but it's definitely missing that Harmon touch.
Harmon was rehired after season 4's ratings went down, and he stayed for seasons 5, which aired on NBC, and 6, which aired on Yahoo! Screen. When he came back, he had quite the job ahead of him: He and the writers' room had to find a way to bring the series back to the weird, quirky, and utterly hysterical comedy we all knew and loved.

It is a miracle that Dan Harmon's groundbreaking sitcom "Community" lasted more than a half-season on NBC. The series about seven misfits who form a study group at the fictional Greendale Community College was aggressively dense in its world-building and proudly esoteric in its references. How esoteric? In only its second season, the show turned what was set up as a "Pulp Fiction" homage into an invigoratingly cerebral riff on "My Dinner with Andre" provoked by a character's extra work on Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel's "Cougar Town." Not so shockingly, "Community" ranked a dire 138 in the Nielsen ratings that year.
Harmon and a crack staff of writers that included Megan Ganz, Dino Stamatopoulos, Liz Cackowski, Chris McKenna, and Andy Bobrow shredded the outside of the envelope of what was acceptable on a network sitcom. It made "Seinfeld" look like "Full House." Critics and a cult following kept...

On Feb. 7, 2013, after delays and significant drama behind the scenes, Community debuted “History 101,” the first episode of the long-awaited fourth season, and the first under new showrunners David Guarascio and Moses Port. Fan reaction to the outing was mixed, to put it mildly, while critics were downright savage. Soon enough, cast and crew began to express their misgivings, too. The entire season was later written off in-universe as the result of a gas leak, never to be spoken of again.
Was that a fair assessment, though? Countless other “bad” installments of pop culture have been revisited over the years, only for perceived faults to be found not quite so damning as audiences initially thought. With an entire decade of hindsight and objectivity to reflect upon, was the fourth season of Community really that bad?
Kind of, yeah!

If there is one thing that has kept "Community" relevant for this long, besides its clever writing and direction, it's the dedicated fan base. From the #sixseasonsandamovie movement that's still going strong to this day to the show's final season being saved by a defunct streaming service, the fans' vocal support has helped keep "Community" going.
The fans' loyalty throughout the behind-the-scenes drama of "Community" also helped to play a significant role in creator Dan Harmon's return to the show. Departing after season 3 ended, new showrunners replaced Harmon after another disagreement with executives had him removed from the series. A fourth season that felt like a caricature of the Greendale cast did not get the best response from fans.
Following the end of "Community" season 4, Harmon would return to the show for the final two seasons, keeping in the spirit of what came before while also reinventing the show...

Will there be a seventh season of Community? Add creator Dan Harmon to the list of people who think it is possible the series will be cancelled, yet again. Harmon ran the show from its fall 2009 NBC debut, through the first three seasons, before being replaced by David Guarascio and Moses Port. Following a faltering fourth season, Sony Pictures Television brought Harmon back for season five, after which NBC cancelled the single-camera sitcom.
Yahoo! Screen brought Community back for season six, and fans were hoping for season seven. In talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Harmon reveals that Community's champion, Kathy Savitt is no longer at Yahoo! Community stars Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jim Rash. Chevy Chase and Donald Glover exited in 2014.

Scream Queens, which received a new trailer this week.
USA Network has formally given a series order to Queen of the South. The series will be based on the 2002 Spanish novel La Raina Del Sur by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, which has already been adapted into a Spanish-language telenovela, and will star City of God and Predators‘ Alice Braga in the lead role of Teresa Mendoza. The series synopsis is as follows.
Queen Of The South tells the powerful story of Teresa Mendoza (Braga). When her drug-dealing boyfriend is unexpectedly murdered in Mexico, Teresa is forced to go on the run and seek refuge in America, where she teams with an unlikely figure from her past to bring down the leader of the very drug trafficking ring that has her on the run. Tonight at 12:01 a.m. Pacific, "Community" will become the latest cultish show canceled by a traditional TV network to live again via a streaming service — and the first of its kind to migrate over to Yahoo Screen, which will be debuting the rest of this sixth season every Monday night/Tuesday morning at this time(*). (*) There are two episodes tonight, then one a week going forward. So long as I have advance screeners, as well as time in which to do it, I'll be running episode reviews about a half hour (or, tonight, hour) after the episodes go live on Yahoo, for those of you who are up at that time of night (or in a more favorable time zone) to watch it. This is the latest improbable behind-the-scenes development in a series that has seen more than its fair share, including the firing and later re-hiring of creator Dan Harmon,...

With Community season 6 around the corner & all 5 seasons now on UK Netflix, should you skip or watch the Dan Harmon-less "gas leak year"?
If you're enjoying watching Community for the first time, since it arrived on UK Netflix last week, the anomaly of the fourth season might be a little bewildering. Where the rest of the show is witty, enjoyable and well-versed in pop culture without being obnoxious about it, season four is almost like an exaggeration of what came before, and yet if you can get through it, it becomes great again in season five.
For those of us more acclimatised to the volatile behind-the-scenes situation on the NBC show, you might remember that there was a season there where series creator and showrunner Dan Harmon was fired, only to be re-hired the following year in an unprecedented turnaround by the network.
With Harmon reinstated, season four looks even more like a blip.

The I.T Crowd is something of a British institution. It is a beloved TV comedy from the pen of the incredibly talented Graham Linehan (Father Ted), which follows the slightly surreal, completely hilarious escapades of some technical support workers at a large corporation. Ultimately comprising four 6 episode seasons and a one-off ‘special’, the show aired in the UK from 2006 to 2010, with its single, triumphant return hitting screens to great acclaim in 2013. It helped launch the careers of its three main cast members – Chris O’Dowd (Dinner For Schmucks, Bridesmaids, This Is 40), Richard Ayoade (Submarine, The Watch, The Double) and Katherine Parkinson (Sherlock, The Honourable Woman), and also its main supporting player, Matt Berry (Moon, Snow White And The Huntsman). In the UK, it is widely held as the gold standard for TV comedy, and now, NBC have committed themselves to a Us pilot of the show, from Scrubs creator,...

“Ratings? Suddenly, the darkest timeline fans had been living in since the beloved cult comedy got the axe from NBC had been averted.
Since that incredible day, news about Yahoo Screen’s upcoming 13-episode sixth season of the show has just been getting better and better. All of Community‘s rabid fans (myself included) were absolutely ecstatic when the cult comedy, cancelled by NBC back in May after five low-rated but critically-adored seasons, found a new lease on life at the absolute last moment when Yahoo Screen swooped in to pick up the show for its long-anticipated sixth season. The darkest timeline, which once seemed like the one we’d have to live with, had been averted – and the good news just kept coming, with word that Dan Harmon and the whole main cast would be returning, and that “early and preliminary talks” were happening about the “movie” part of “#sixseasonsandamovie,” Community fans’ long-time rallying cry.

Dan Harmon's cult comedy Community will not achieved its goal of #SixSeasonsAndAMovie. The recently concluded fifth season of the Sony Pictures Television series will be its last, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Harmon, who returned as showrunner for season five following a tumultuous run in which he criticized NBC, originally envisioned season five as the show's last, though NBC's comedy woes briefly left the door open for the Joel McHale starrer to return for another year. The series weathered a rocky fourth season after Harmon and Ep Chris McKenna's exit. David Guarascio and Moses Port were brought in to serve

Greendale Human Beings, rejoice! Community, NBC’s gloriously witty and inventive comedy, may actually fulfill its promise of six seasons and a movie, according to a recent TV Guide report.
Though a renewal for the veteran underdog, currently in the midst of its fifth season, is not yet assured, the report suggests that NBC may order a thirteen-episode sixth season due to the fact that it didn’t launch a single successful comedy last fall – The Michael J. Fox Show, Sean Saves the World and Welcome to the Family all floundered in the ratings and were eventually axed.
What’s more, rumors have been circulating on the web that NBC and Harmon are “considering” Fast & Furious 6 director Justin Lin to direct a cinematic finale for the show. That may seem like an odd choice, but Lin actually has a history with Community; he directed three episodes of the show,...

Community season five never should have happened. Don’t take that the wrong way – I’m very happy that it did. But that doesn’t change how highly the odds were stacked against it. As I watched the first and second episodes of the new season last night, I couldn’t escape a feeling somewhere between elation and disbelief at the simple fact that I was still watching Community – the eternal underdog, somehow the show had evaded the NBC cancellation axe once again. After all, shows that lack huge stars, draw small ratings and experiment with formula rarely make it past one season. Certainly none of them make it to five.

The fourth season of "Community," which was overseen by new showrunners David Guarascio and Moses Port after creator Dan Harmon was fired, just... wasn't the same. Yes, Harmon's comparison to watching it being similar to "being held down and watching your family get raped on a beach" was both tasteless and extreme, but storylines like "Changnesia" and the Britta break-up didn't feel like they involved the same characters the show had before. With Harmon back in charge for the fifth season, kicking off on NBC on January 2nd, everyone's wondering if he'll be able to return the idiosyncratic comedy to its former state -- the season premiere is even called "Repilot." If the trailer below is any indication, the show will indeed be back in its old form -- like the earlier teaser, it takes the form of a fake movie promo, in this case an epic one going "Beyond the Darkest Timeline.

After a lackluster season four, NBC’s Community is gearing up to premiere its fifth season next month, and all is right with the world. Though the fourth season was an undeniably poor outing for the cult meta-comedy, Dan Harmon is back in the saddle as showrunner, so the likelihood of Community returning to the same level of quality for which it has become renowned is quite high.

With NBC axing freshman comedy Welcome to the Family, the network’s Thursday night schedule has opened up, which is great news for fans of the cult comedy Community.
The Peacock Network has just announced that the show’s fifth season will premiere on Thursday, January 2nd at 8:00 p.m., airing two back-to-back episodes before shifting to its regular, half-hour 8:00 p.m. slot the next week to accommodate the return of Parks and Recreation.
The return of the critically-acclaimed comedy was up in the air back in September when NBC simply scheduled it for a mid-season debut. Fans of the show are most likely now starting to count down the days until January 2nd, especially with widely-perceived creative genius Dan Harmon back running things.
Harmon was fired from Community in May of 2012, following heated arguments with NBC and former cast-member Chevy Chase over the direction of the show.

Last May, in the aftermath of Community creator Dan Harmon being fired from his own show, it emerged that execs from NBC and the show’s studio, Sony, had been frustrated by Harmon’s management style and his apparent belief that his corporate bosses were nuisances to be swatted away like flies at a picnic. A little more than a year later, he was rehired for season five, and judging from his recent comments on his Harmontown podcast in which he dumped on the show’s Harmon-less season four, calling it an “unflattering impression,” he has not become any more of a company man. While he subsequently apologized for his pod-rant to the show's cast and crew, former executive producers David Guarascio and Moses Port, and anyone offended by his rape-watching analogy, he had no mea culpas for network or studio execs, instead doubling down on thoughts like, “Writers fighting...

"Community" creator Dan Harmon's startling openness with his fans on Twitter, Tumblr and via his podcast/live show Harmontown is one of his most endearing and problematic qualities. It's allowed those who like his work a closeness and an insight into his process and mindset that's rare, and it's gotten him into trouble more than once when something he shared in an essentially public forum the kind of opinions usually only muttered between friends. Harmon was officially reinstated as showrunner of "Community" earlier this month, which meant that he had to actually watch the 13 episodes that make up season four, when he was fired and replaced by David Guarascio and Moses Port. Harmon shared his thoughts on the season on Harmontown, and while he admitted Guarascio, Port and company tried their best, he was not gentle with regard to how he felt about the results: I guess I already knew this,...

Dan Harmon is officially back on Community - and wasting no time in stirring up more controversy.
The showrunner, who was removed from his post last year and then shocking brought back this month, said of Community Season 4 in his latest podcast:
"It was weird. I think I feel pretty comfortable in expressing that [Season 4] is not my cup of tea."
The 13 episodes produced by David Guarascio and Moses Port were not met with a strong response from loyal Community viewers, with Harmon going on about how he viewed them:
"It's very much like an impression. And an unflattering one... They replaced us with us with two guys who didn't know what they were getting into. They went to Comic-Con, and saw what was going on... and they went, 'F---,' and then I think they tried their best."
Following a bit of backlash, Harmon took to Twitter yesterday and semi-apologized...

A couple weeks ago, we told you that Sony asked Dan Harmon to record the commentary for the fourth season of Community. He responded that he was going to watch the season first before making a decision. Well, he watched it and though he acknowledges that the replacement showrunners David Guarascio and Moses Port “tried their best,” he not surprisingly wasn’t too enthused with it. He spoke very frankly about it on the most recent episode of his Harmontown podcast:“I watched season four. I guess I already knew this, but apparently, I’m quite a genius … I think I feel pretty comfortable expressing any kind of 'Eh, not my cup of tea' about it because — this has been expressed a thousand times over — it's obviously not somebody doing what they do and trying very hard to make people happy. At Sunday’s taping of his Harmontown podcast, returning Community creator and exec producer Dan Harmon unloaded on the show’s fourth season, which carried on under writers David Guarascio and Moses Port after NBC replaced Harmon as showrunner last year. “It’s very much like an impression and an unflattering one,” he said. “It’s 13 episodes of ‘I’m Dan Harmon!’ I’m going back to work tomorrow morning and I’m just like, do I talk like that?” Harmon, who is heading back for Season 5 with writer Chris McKenna, compared catching up on the Guarascio and Port-led fourth season to “flipping through Instagram watching your girlfriend blow a million [people].” Related: Dan Harmon Reacts To His Dismissal As ‘Community’ Showrunner He also didn’t mince words when it came to describing Sony TV’s decision to remove him from the show in the first place. A week after Community creator Dan Harmon was officially reinstated as showrunner on the fifth season of NBC's cult comedy, the vocal TV writer-producer let it all hang out. Harmon had previously said that he had not yet watched the fourth season of Community, which was co-run by Moses Port and David Guarascio — until now. As Harmon put it, the season echoed the then-newly inserted showrunners' desires of infusing Harmon's voice into each episode. "It's not somebody doing what they do and trying really hard to make people happy. It is very much an impression, an

Dan Harmon, the fired and re-hired creator of "Community," has now watched the fourth season of his cult comedy. And he didn't like what he saw when the show was under the direction of replacement showrunners David Guarascio and Moses Port.
"I watched ['Community'] Season 4. I guess I already knew this, but apparently I'm quite a genius. It was weird. I think I pretty feel pretty comfortable expressing any kind of like, 'Eh, not my cup of tea' about it, because ... this has been expressed a thousand times over, it's obviously not somebody doing what they do, and trying really hard to make people happy. Only one thing could get Dan Harmon to watch the fourth season of Community, the NBC sitcom that was so cruelly ripped away from him last spring: being reinstated as his creation’s executive producer.
And now that he has watched it… hoo boy.
Harmon spilled his thoughts during the most recent edition of “Harmontown,” the digressive comedy show-slash-podcast he hosts with Jeff B. Davis each week. At first, his reaction was fairly tame; Harmon said he felt comfortable calling the season “not my cup of tea,” since it was obviously an “impression, and an unflattering one” of Community under his own stewardship.

More than a week after rumors and tweets broke the news that Dan Harmon would be returning to "Community" for Season 5, NBC and Sony Pictures Television have officially confirmed that both Harmon and writer/producer Chris McKenna would be back.
The timing is good too. According to Dan Harmon, the writing of Season 5 was ready to begin.
NBC's announcement came via a very brief press release on Monday (June 10). Not only did this release confirm that the two men -- both veterans of the earlier seasons of "Community" -- would be back, but it also stated their new roles on the show. Harmon will be taking back the job of executive producer and showrunner for the show he created, while McKenna will be an executive producer. Harmon's reinstated position indicates that Season 4's showrunners, Moses Port and David Guarascio, may not be returning.

It's hard to fault Dan Harmon for not watching "Community" Season 4. After all, the writer and producer had just been fired from the show he created and ran for three years. Watching the results of someone else's labor would be difficult.
But now that Harmon is set to return for "Community" Season 5, he probably should check out the past season's episodes.
Unfortunately, he hasn't done that yet.
Speaking to E!Online at the Atx festival in Austin, Texas, Harmon explained that he had a plan to fix this problem. "I am going to watch [Season 4] I think when I get back on Sunday. The aughts emerged right off its centennial heal with an array of sitcom comedies heavily revolving around groups of various character types. In 2003, the dysfunctional wealthy Bluth family came about in Arrested Development. In 2005, it was the depiction of the everyday lives of Dunder Mifflin paper employees in The Office. Community creator Dan Harmon is the new Doctor! All right, so he won’t be donning an Inspector Spacetime costume and stepping into the Tardis to replace Matt Smith, but the better, actual news is that Harmon is returning to run his cult sitcom. After being removed by production company Sony / quitting at the end of the third season of the show (delete according to preferred version of events), Harmon was replaced by Moses Port and David Guarascio, who struggled to find the right tone for the show and usually ended up creating a sort of faux Community that had many elements of the series that Harmon crafted, but none of its special charm or, frankly, weird magic. Now, thanks apparently to the efforts of cast members including Joel McHale (who were apparently as dissatisfied by the quality of the scripts in the last year as their small but dedicated...

Last year, Harmon was replaced by David Guarascio and Moses Port (Just Shoot Me) after a highly publicized dispute with cast member Chevy Chase, who will not be back next season. I'm still puzzled as to why the network took Chase's side in the first place. After Harmon was forced off, it felt like salt on the wound when Chase was only back in a very diminished capacity, serving little to no purpose in the story lines.
The unofficial goal/motto of "six seasons and a movie" has a much more hopeful ring to it now. Last season,...

In a word: Wow.
In another few words: How totally shocking and completely awesome?!?
After revealing that he was in discussions for a return to Community last week, Dan Harmon left a Twitter message today that makes it rather clear once and for all.
"Yes yes yes! I'm back I'm back I'm back. You can thank @joelmchale," he wrote in response to a question from a follower.
Harmon was fired about a year ago from the sitcom he created, with Moses Port and David Guarascio taking over as showrunners.
Most fans agree that Community Season 4 had a different (read: less funny) feel to it than when Harmon was in charge, but NBC did go ahead and order 13 more episodes. Of course, the network is yet to actually put it on the fall or midseason schedule yet.

Dan Harmon to the rescue? A year ago, Sony declined to renew Harmon's contract as "Community" showrunner, for reasons the studio never clarified(*) — though even Harmon himself later acknowledged that he wasn't that easy to deal with, and maybe wasn't worth the bother on such a marginally-rated show. There really is a chance that "Community" could return for Season 5 with Dan Harmon along for the ride. The show's creator and former showrunner surprised fans on Saturday (May 25) when he mentioned that his return was a possibility. Now, Sony has confirmed these talks.
So will Dan Harmon return to the NBC comedy? What does it mean for "Community" if he does?
Sony Pictures Television confirmed talks with Harmon to The Hollywood Reporter, although no new details were revealed.
Harmon was the executive producer and showrunner of "Community" for its first three seasons. Widely acknowledged as the main driving force behind the insane show, problems behind-the-scenes led to Harmon's firing by Sony at the end of Season 3. Although his name still appears in the "Community" credits as the show's creator, Dan Harmon was not actively associated with his former show during its recent Season 4.
