Production is set to start next week on pan-European TV series “Survivors,” the latest project commissioned by the partnership known as The Alliance between leading European public broadcasters to counter the growing power of Netflix and other streamers.
The plan is for cameras to start rolling in Genoa on Oct. 21 on the series revolving around a sailboat that gets destroyed in a fierce storm and disappears. After a year the wreck is recovered with seven survivors aboard, some of whom seem to be hiding a terrible secret. Each episode follows the complex events related to their return.
The start of principal photography on “Survivors” was announced on Friday during Rome’s Mia market.
Italy’s Rai Fiction, France Télévisions, and Germany’s Zdf are on board the show, which is produced by Fabienne Servan-Schreiber and Thomas Saignes at Paris-based Cinetevé and by Marco Poccioni and Marco Valsania at Italian shingle Rodeo Drive.

The Alliance, the new partnership formed by leading European pubcasters to counter the growing power of Netflix and other players, is revving up with two new international dramas, “Around the World in 80 Days” and “Mirage.”
The Alliance was formed last year by France Televisions, Germany’s Zdf and Italy’s Rai. The partners unveiled their two new ambitious shows Wednesday at Series Mania in Lille, France.
For France Televisions in particular, the series are part of a wider move into high-end international drama that also includes French series like “Germinal,” based on Emile Zola’s classic novel, and the adaptation of Guillaume Musso’s bestseller, “La jeune fille et la nuit,” both of which France Televisions is developing outside of the Alliance.

Ivano de Matteo’s Italian film to receive promotional support from Europa Cinemas.
Italian film The Dinner (i Nostri Ragazzi), directed by Ivano de Matteo has won the Europa Cinemas Label as Best European Film in the Venice Days section of the Venice Film Festival (Aug 27 - Sept 6). The jury comprised four exhibitors from the network.
The Dinner will now benefit from promotional support from Europa Cinemas and better exhibition due to a financial incentive for network cinemas to include it in their programme schedule.
The drama, about a family dinner going horribly wrong, is inspired by Herman Koch’s worldwide bestselling novel of the same name, which was previously adapted as a Dutch-language film by Menno Meyjes and is also slated for an adaptation starring Cate Blanchett.
The jury said: “Ivano de Matteo’s film is a confident, beautifully written and extremely well constructed drama. It manages to articulate many powerful themes – alienation between children and their...
