Freestyle Pictures has tapped scribe Matt Nix to adapt Sensei, a novel by author John Donohue. Freestyle's Adam Platnick is producing. Sensei is a crime thriller set in the world of martial arts. It revolves around a Brooklyn cop who has to team up with his estranged brother to solve a series of murders involving martial arts masters across the United States. Dana Jackson Will Shepherd the project for Freestyle, which has a financing deal with Constantin Film and whose credits include Resident Evil. Nix wrote Cock, to which he is attached to direct. He also wrote Cruddy, an adaptation of the Lynda Barry novel that has Betty Thomas attached to direct. The deal is in the low-six figures. Nix is repped by Endeavor and Bondesen/Graup.

MUNICH -- Constantin Film AG said Tuesday that it has reached a distribution agreement for Germany with Switzerland's Highlight Communications AG, which has upped its stake in Constantin from 23% to 25%. The Swiss company bought Constantin shares on the open market after having taken over the bankrupt Kirch media empire's stake in the independent German distribution and production company in May. The new distribution agreement, which goes into effect Jan. 1, will start with The Hours, starring Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep, and Harv, the Barbarian, with Rob Schneider. On Monday, Constantin's U.S. subsidiary Constantin Film International said it had signed a three-year production, finance and distribution contract with U.S. producer Adam Platnick's new production company, Freestyle Pictures (HR 10/8). Platnick, the former Mandalay Pictures president responsible for such hits as Sleepy Hollow and The Score, will produce films for Constantin and will participate in their international distribution. In a statement, Constantin Film International said the move represents "our continued commitment to expand our production capabilities in the United States."...

CANNES -- Germany's Constantin Film has signed a three-year co-financing, production and distribution deal with Adam Platnick's new production shingle Freestyle Pictures, Constantin and Freestyle said Monday. Under the deal, Constantin will co-finance Freestyle productions, which the two companies will jointly distribute internationally. The aim for the deal, according to sources, is to produce three movies a year. Specific projects to fall under the deal have yet to be announced. The partners also have discussed the possibility of bringing in a third international financing and distribution partner, but no deal has been struck. Freestyle is temporarily based in Constantin's Beverly Hills offices, and Platnick said he expects to hire some development staff for his company in the coming weeks.
