Troubling fact: the great director Otto Preminger's worst film is not Skidoo. Three physical misfits form an alternative family as a defense against the world. It's a good idea for a movie, but the writer and director do just about everything wrong that a writer and director can do. Well, genre fans, we only have four home entertainment releases coming our way this Tuesday, but as the saying goes, they are quality over quantity.
Scream Factory is releasing the ’90s thriller The Crush on Blu-ray this week and we also have two great recent films to look forward to as well: The Wave and Midnight Special. Rounding out this Tuesday’s Blu-ray and DVD offerings is Bayview Entertainment’s DVD release of the ’80s cult classic, Biohazard.
Biohazard (Bayview Entertainment, DVD)
The cult classic returns featuring an all-new 2K 16×9 widescreen film transfer from the original 35mm negative! A group of scientists, army types and a buxom psychic use a variety of methods to suck a bloodthirsty alien out of another dimension. Upon arriving, the little devil blasts his way loose, taking part of a soldiers face along the way. The psychic and her network of friends chase the beast,...

Back in 1983 Jim Wynorski shot his first film, The Lost Empire, which has itself been "lost" for several years. Finally, on April 22nd it's getting its long-awaited home video release on DVD.
From the Press Release:
In 1983 a young director stepped behind the camera for the first time and began to shoot a film which he thought might be both his first and his last. An ardent fan of "B" cinema, Jim Wynorski decided to cram this film with everything he loved.
"I got my first break doing The Lost Empire for Plitt Theatres," says Jim Wynorski. "The late owner, Henry Plitt (a decorated war hero), wanted to make a low budget sci-fi action picture as a tax loss. I never knew that when I made the show, so I put my heart and soul into the project. When it finally got completed, Plitt actually liked it enough to give...

We all love our monthly ‘Late Night Grindhouse’ at The Hi-Pointe, but what the heck is going on at the Jamestown Mall Cinema?! Daytime Grindhouse?! My buddy Mike Dugge called me last night and said he had just returned from a showing there of the 1985 big bust sci-fi schlock epic Lost Empire. I was like “Huh?!…What?!…Huh!?”. I checked Movietickets.com and saw he wasn’t pulling my leg. I called the Jamestown and talked to the manager there. Apparently, they’ve been having a ‘B-Movie’ series featuring schlock for the past 4 weeks. They’ve shown (and I’ve missed) Nightbeast, Giant Spider Invasion, A Boy And His Dog, and Rabid Love. That last one is a new film as are the next two films they will be playing: The Resurrection and Gila (a 2012 Sci-Fy channel movie). I wish I had known about this series earlier. Apparently the Jamestown...

James Tiberius Kirk. Captain of the starship USS Enterprise. Courageous explorer of the cosmos. Intergalactic love machine. Throughout William Shatner's three-decade reign as Captain Kirk, one thing is clear: his devilish charm works wonders with the ladies, both human and alien.
Jj Abrams has carried this through in Chris Pine's incarnation of the character, hooking Kirk up with a green-skinned Orion Starfleet officer in 2009's Star Trek and two cat-like aliens in Star Trek Into Darkness.
To mark the return of Kirk to the big screen, Digital Spy takes a look at 5 of the cosmic lothario's most memorable love interests from The Original Series.

The history of cinema has had many long-running actor/director partnerships. What first springs to my mind is the long collaboration between actor John Wayne and director John Ford, which has inspired several film books and documentaries. More recently we’ve had the Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro team-ups ( although Leonardo DiCaprio may just catch up to Mr. D ). And now we have the eighth film that actor Johnny Depp has done with director Tim Burton since they first paired all the way back in 1990 for Edward Scissorhands ( Wow! ). After films based on children’s books, a low-budget filmmaker’s life, and a Broadway musical what have the duo decided to tackle now? Why, it’s a classic cult TV show from the late 1960′s : Dark Shadows. What’s their take on this supernatural soap opera?.

Even immortal vampire Barnabas Collins himself would find it a Herculean task to wade through all 1,225 episodes of the original "Dark Shadows" TV series. To put it in perspective, a new complete coffin-shaped DVD box set boasts a runtime of 30,000 hours, and that's without bathroom breaks.
The supernatural soap opera, which ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971, is now getting the full-on feature film treatment. "Dark Shadows" (the movie) has all the big-budget trimmings courtesy of director Tim Burton and his muse Johnny Depp as Barnabas. Before you devour the May 11 release, we've created an easy-breezy introduction to all the things you'll find lurking in the "Shadows."
Welcome to Collinwood
Even though bloodsucker Barnabas is the everlasting icon of the show, he was not introduced until the 211th episode of the weekday soap. Up until that point the central character was a naïve young woman named Victoria Winters, a foundling with...

Sorry, Snow White. Nothing personal, Thor. Of course we still love you, the Batman. We always will. It’s just that when it comes to summer movies, we love a glowering villain as much as we love a virtuous hero. Maybe a little more. Maybe … a lot more.
Luckily for us (and you!), this summer’s films are jam-packed with some of the most malevolent evil characters imaginable, ready to face off against the hottest heroes and heroines from May to August. Tom Hiddleston reprises his Thor role as power-hungry extraterrestrial Loki in this week’s The Avengers, while Flight of the Concords’ Jemaine Clement breaks Will Smith‘s stride as an easy-riding alien by the name of Boris in Men in Black III. Closer to home (and to your childhood nightmares), Queen Charlize Theron goes after Kristen Stewart‘s heart (not in the romantic way) in Snow White and the Huntsman,...

St. Louis Shakespeare’s The Magic Smoking Monkey Theatre adapts a cult film into an onstage farce once a year. Previous adaptions have included Pan 9 From Outer Space, Reefer Madness, Glen Or Glenda, and The Star Wars Trilogy (!!). Last year they helped celebrate Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration with a stage presentation of one of the home town horror star’s classics: The Abominable Dr. Phibes in 3D, a sidesplitting, Pythonesque parody.
This year, in conjunction with the St. Louis Science Center’s Star Trek – The Exhibition, the uber-talented Smoking Monkeys are presenting the all-new hilarious spoof Star Trek – Live! Two classic episodes of the original series will be lambasted: In The Gamesters of Triskelion Captain Kirk is played by Jim Ousley, Mr. Spock is played by Ed Cole, and Shanha, played on the show by the late cult actress Angelique Pettyjohn (known to Trekkie geeks as The Bustiest Alien in the Galaxy!

The first trailer for Tim Burton’s adaptation of the cult TV series Dark Shadows, has finally arrived. The somewhat soap opera was distinguished by its vividly melodramatic performances, Gothic atmosphere, twisted story-lines (with various dramatic plot twists), adventurous music score, and more importantly, its broad and epic cosmos of characters. Although the original series ran for only five years, its scheduling as a daily daytime drama allowed it to amass more single episodes during its run (1,225) than most other science-fiction/fantasy genre series produced for English-language television, including Doctor Who and the entire Star Trek television franchise.
Now decades later, Tim Burton once again has teamed up with Johnny Depp, who’s reportedly been wanting to revive the ’60s supernatural soap opera for several years, to direct his most anticipated film in years. After seeing a number of photos released over the past few months, we finally get a...
