Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar acceptance speech after Zone of Interest won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film has drawn condemnation from more than a thousand Hollywood actors, creatives and executives over the past few days, but there are also some in the entertainment industry who have spoken in support of Glazer and his speech.
For context, here is the entirety of Glazer’s speech:
Thank you so much. I’m going to read, I’m afraid.
Thank you to the Academy for this honor and to our partners A24 Films for access and Polish Film Institute, to the Stead Museum for their trust and guidance, to my producers, actors, collaborators.
All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present, not to say look what they did then, but rather look what we do now.

More than 1,000 Jewish creatives, executives and Hollywood professionals have signed an open letter denouncing Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” Oscar speech.
The list of co-signees provided to Variety Monday morning covers a broad swath of the industry including actors, executives, creators (Amy Sherman-Palladino), directors, producers and representatives. About 500 more individuals have added their names to the nearly 500 who signed on when the open letter was first published.
The group’s statement says: “We refute our Jewishness being hijacked for the purpose of drawing a moral equivalence between a Nazi regime that sought to exterminate a race of people, and an Israeli nation that seeks to avert its own extermination.”
Glazer declined to comment.
With such high-profile co-signees as Jennifer Jason Leigh, “La La Land” producer Gary Gilbert and “The Americans” creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, the statement adds, “The use of words like ‘occupation’ to describe an...

At this year’s Oscars, “The Zone of Interest” director Jonathan Glazer took the prize for most polarizing speech. And the swirl surrounding exactly what he said and what he meant — still a matter of debate — doesn’t appear to be dying down.
When the British filmmaker took the stage after the Auschwitz-set Holocaust drama was announced as best international film, he was greeted with a standing ovation. He then referred to notes he’d prepared in advance, thanked the requisite players and drew a parallel between “Zone of Interest” and the current conflict in Gaza that was difficult to decipher given the audience applause and his own mumbling.
“All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present, not to say look what they did then, but rather look what we do now,” he said, according to the Academy’s official transcript of the speech. “Our...

“The Girls on the Bus,” Max’s long-in-the-works journalism dramedy series from the producers of “The Flight Attendant,” finally has a trailer.
The series follows four women as they work as embedded political reporters on a presidential campaign trail. There’s idealistic Sadie McCarthy (Melissa Benoist), who works for a respectable newspaper; Grace (Carla Gugino), a veteran reporter whose hard-nosed style gets scoops and makes enemies; Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore), a Black conservative who works for a right-wing news channel; and Lola (Natasha Benham), who thinks traditional journalism is ancient and social media is where it’s at. Though they’re all very competitive and different from each other, they develop a close bond as they work within the pressure cooker environment of the campaign trail.
The cast also includes Scott Foley, Brandon Scott, Griffin Dunne, and Mark Consuelos.

There’s no fear and loathing on the campaign trail here for Max’s female journalist-led comedy “The Girls on the Bus.” The series, which is executive produced by the team behind “The Flight Attendant,” follows four political reporters along the (fictional) campaign trail as friendship, love, and yes, even a government conspiracy, complicate their lives.
The official synopsis reads: “‘The Girls on the Bus’ invites viewers to hit the campaign trail alongside four female journalists, each of them different in their reporting styles and personalities. The Apple TV+ crime drama “City on Fire,” which wrapped up its 8-episode first season two months ago, will not be getting a second season, TheWrap has confirmed.
Based on the novel of the same name by Garth Risk Hallberg, “City on Fire” wasn’t listed as a limited series. But the story shown in Season 1 covered the entire book, which means viewers won’t be stuck with a never-resolved cliffhanger similar to Hulu’s 2020 “High Fidelity” adaptation.
Set in 2003, the story follows the aftermath of the shooting of a young student in Central Park, New York city. The investigation uncovers ties to a series of fires, the Manhattan music scene, and a secretive and wealthy real estate family.
Created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the show was executive produced by Schwartz and Savage alongside Lis Rowinski and Jesse Peretz.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has opted not to pick up a second season of crime drama series City on Fire. The news comes a month and a half after Season 1 finished its eight-episode run on the streamer. It is not surprising as the adaptation of the novel of the same name didn’t get a lot of buzz the way other recent Apple TV+ entries like Silo and Hijack have.
While City on Fire was ordered and marketed as a drama series, not a limited series, and there were seeds for a second season planted in the finale, viewers will not be left hanging as Season 1 covered the arc in the book.

Apple TV+ will be premiering the eight-episode series City on Fire, inspired by Garth Risk Hallberg’s bestselling novel, on May 12, 2023. The first three episodes will be released simultaneously, followed by new episodes on Fridays. The season’s finale is set to air on June 16th.
City on Fire takes place in New York City, and in an interview with NPR in October 2015, author Hallberg – who grew up in North Carolina – explained why he chose NYC as the setting. “I fell in love with New York at some indeterminate point in my early years,” said Hallberg. “Something about the city captured my imagination in a way that even Middle-Earth and Narnia couldn’t — because it was somehow real.”
Hallberg added: “So I guess I was dreaming my way into it long before I realized that I was going to write about it.”

In Apple TV+’s City on Fire, which hails from executive producers and showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, a suburban teenager must unravel the mystery of his friend’s murder after she’s shot in Central Park on Fourth of July in 2003.
The series, which is set for a May 12 premiere, is based on the novel of the same name that takes place in 1970s New York — a time of severe financial crisis and widespread panic in the city due to a string of shootings (known as the Son of Sam murders). The show jumps forward in time to another period of uncertainty in New York post-9/11.
“We felt like, while a fascinating period, [that era is] well trodden territory. We were really interested in that post-9/11, Occupy Wall Street [era] in New York. Obviously, the book culminates in the blackout of ’77. There was a massive blackout in 2003. So creatively, that storyline lined up.

Jason Katims approached As We See It with a personal connection: his son is on the autism spectrum. He decided to go fully authentic with the casting, hiring three autistic actors that had an understanding of what it means to be on the spectrum. The choice has led to critical acclaim for the Amazon Prime Video series for its well-rounded characters.

With “As We See It,” creator Jason Katims has clear objectives: to let people on the autism spectrum be at the centers of their own stories, and to tell those stories with the kind of care they’re otherwise rarely afforded on TV. Whereas a comedy like Josh Thomas’ “Everything’s Going to Be Okay” — which also gave people with autism the spotlight — largely focused on the intersection between the absurd and sublime, . It’s a lot to ask of a show to handle all the above with both sensitivity and a clear eye for narrative, but Katims and company continually find a way to thread this particularly tricky needle.
The new eight-episode series, out today on Amazon Prime Video, focuses on a trio of roommates on the autism spectrum. Programmer Jack (Rick Glassman), sweetheart Harrison (Albert Rutecki), and frustrated Violet (Sue Ann Pien) are all doing their best, with...

Question: What do Kathryn Hahn and Paul Rudd have to do to get some love from the Emmy Awards next year? Answer: Star in a buzzworthy AppleTV+ limited series that is one-part psychological drama, one-part dark comedy.
Despite their superstar status in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Hahn plays devious witch Agatha Harkness and Rudd has headlined a bunch of MCU blockbusters as fan-fave superhero Ant-Man), both actors have surprisingly struck out at the Emmys.

Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd have reunited for the new Apple TV+ series “The Shrink Next Door,” but fans of the comedy actors should not expect another “Anchorman” experience.
“It’s not a cartoon in any way,” Rudd told the New York Times about the new series this week. “As dark as the story can get — and people were really hurt — there is something so absurd that it’s funny. You can have humor and real drama, simultaneously.”
“There’d be days where we’d start with something lighthearted and then the second half of the day was Paul and I really getting into an intense, emotional scene. To shift in those ways was really challenging,” Ferrell said in the same interview.
Based on the Wondery and Bloomberg podcast of the same name, “The Shrink Next Door” tells the fact-based story about the relationship between psychiatrist Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf...

The intimacy of psychiatry was made for drama. The most renowned TV series of the modern era was, at first, centered on its antihero’s talk-therapy sessions — exploring both what was troubling Tony Soprano and the ways in which his monstrousness, seen at close range, compelled and seduced the professional trying to help him.
“The Shrink Next Door,” directed by Michael Showalter and Jesse Peretz and written by Georgia Pritchett, reverses the manipulation. On Apple TV Plus’ new limited series (based on the true-crime podcast of the same name), it’s the doctor (Paul Rudd) who’s absent a moral compass, squeezing fealty out of his patient (Will Ferrell). But, leaving unfair comparisons with “The Sopranos” aside, “The Shrink Next Door” simply lacks the vibrant give-and-take that its subject matter suggests. Its characters feel unknowable, a problem for a show that concerns the emotional and intellectual tug-of-war in the therapist’s office.

Dr. Ike is joined in infiltrating Marty’s life by his unsuspecting wife Bonnie (Casey Wilson), and though Marty may be blind to the shrink’s abuses, his hard-headed sister Phyllis (Kathryn Hahn) is not. Everything’s “fine” in the first trailer for The Shrink Next Door, Apple TV+’s dark comedy starring Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd about the bizarre relationship between a psychiatrist and his patient.
Based on a true story that was later turned into a 2019 Wonderly podcast, the limited series focuses on Ferrell’s stressed-out Martin “Marty” Markowitz and his seemingly good-natured shrink Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf, played by Rudd.
While the trailer focuses on the “breakthroughs” the two enjoy during their sessions, Apple+ hints at a darker side of the relationship in the series’ synopsis,...

Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell are joining comedic forces once again, this time as an unlikely therapist-patient duo in Apple TV Plus’ upcoming limited series, “The Shrink Next Door,” which premieres on Nov. 12.
In the first teaser for the dark comedy, psychiatrist to the stars Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf (Rudd) asks his longtime patient Martin “Marty” Markowitz (Ferrell) to stop using “the f-word” — but it’s not what you think. Ike wants Marty to stop saying he’s “fine,” because as the teaser shows, he clearly isn’t. The clip features Marty breaking down in various ways, until one day, he has a breakthrough. As Billy Joel’s “My Life” plays, Ike and Marty form a boundary-crossing friendship, one that eventually involves Marty burying what appears to be a dead body.
