It's finally here! The Labour Day weekend isn't really the end of summer, but it certainly feels that way. Maybe it's the residual instinct ingrained in us after years of elementary and high school, when summertime meant freedom from school for a full two months and September meant the end of all that and the return to teachers, books, and (ugh) homework.
No matter how you feel about the holiday, there's still lots of ways to squeeze the most fun possible out of your extra day off! And what better way to while away an afternoon than with a movie at a Cineplex theatre. Without further ado, here's our recommendations for what to see in theatres this long weekend!

Stars: Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella, Bill Skarsgård, John Goodman, Toby Jones, Roland Moller | Written by Kurt Johnstad | Based on “The Coldest City” by Antony Johnston & Sam Hart | Directed by David Leitch
An ice cool Charlize Theron kicks plenty of ass in this stylish Cold War action thriller from the co-director of John Wick, but the script leaves a lot to be desired.
Sporting a distractingly dodgy British accent and a Debbie Harry-style peroxide blonde hair-do, Theron plays MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton, who’s sent into Cold War Berlin to investigate the murder of a fellow agent (Sam Hargrave) and recover a missing list of undercover agents. Her contact in Berlin is shady MI6 station officer David Percival (James McAvoy), who seems to have gone a little too deep undercover as a contraband-toting wheeler-dealer and appears to have his own agenda.

Charlize Theron excels as an action lead in this cold war spy story, adapted from graphic novel The Coldest City
I can’t think of any actor more deserving of their own pulpy action franchise than Charlize Theron. Having stolen Mad Max: Fury Road from Tom Hardy one-handed (literally), she is relentlessly, murderously brilliant in this adaptation of Antony Johnston’s graphic novel The Coldest City. The setting is Berlin just before the fall of the Wall; the paranoid hangover of the cold war is giving way to a new era of hungry opportunism. A British agent has been murdered; a valuable list is missing. And MI5 asset Lorraine Broughton (Theron, looking like Debbie Harry dipped in venom) is flown in to clear up the mess. There she butts heads with fellow agent David Percival (James McAvoy, skeevy-sexy, accessorised with beer sweats and casual treachery) and has a fling with...

MaryAnn’s quick take… The living, breathing, bleeding life of the breathtaking fight scenes cannot overcome confusingly twisty spy intrigue and multiple male gazes on the story. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women; love spy stuff
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material

Berlin, 1989. The Wall is about to fall, but the Cold War isn’t over yet. MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron: The Fate of the Furious, Kubo and the Two Strings) is sent in to retrieve a missing list of all spies and operatives on all sides, if she can find it before the Soviets do. It’s an “atomic bomb of information,” not least because the list includes the identity of a double agent known as Satchel. Atomic Blonde — I guess because she’s so hot?...

David Leitch imbues a stylistic fervour in Atomic Blonde; a picture illuminated by its indelible neon glow, portraying the city of Berlin in an affectionate, striking light – and yet the film never compromises on its commitment to brutality. Similar to the likes of Sin City and Drive, the filmmaker maintains an almost cartoon-like approach to give it a licence to display graphic violence, sex, and pretty much everything in between.
Charlize Theron plays Lorraine Broughton, hired by the British government to head off to the German capital to work alongside David Percival (James McAvoy) and help to reclaim an all important list, that if left in the hands of the Kgp, could well prolong the Cold War by decades. As she arrives, she finds herself an instant target, but Lorraine lives by the notion of keeping her friends close and her enemies even closer, the problem is,...

It’s hard coming here to review Atomic Blonde after ripping in to Valerian last week. I said Valerian was a gorgeous movie with well-executed action sequences that didn’t click for me because the script was a genuine chore to think about. Atomic Blonde has a lot of the same problems, and at times looks like someone’s aesthetic Tumblr came to life on the condition that it had to recite a tired spy story to stay alive. I’m not sure why, but it works for Atomic Blonde. Maybe an overdone spy story is just more fun than an underdone science fiction story. Maybe Charlize Theron and James McAvoy are just that much better than Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne. It could be as simple as grey and neon and the fall of the Berlin Wall is a better mood than the promise of a fantastic science fiction...

We seem to be heading into a period of resurgence of mid-budget action flicks. A couple years ago, we saw John Wick hit theaters, and while it was made on a modest budget, it boasted topnotch gun-toting action. On the heels of that, it’s as if studios realized that they could actually make some good money off these mid-budget films. Coming off the success of John Wick, uncredited co-director David Leitch hopped on board Atomic Blonde, an action flick that stars bona fide badass Charlize Theron in the lead role.
So how does Leitch’s single directorial debut fare? Does it match the previously-mentioned John Wick in quality and thrills? Sadly, the answer is no, but that’s not to say it’s a bad movie, and if you’re just looking for some amazing fight choreography, then you’ll likely be in for quite a ride.

Savvy lesbian cinephiles have learned to be on guard whenever lesbian sex pops up onscreen — especially when it’s coming from a straight male director. While gay men are often portrayed as desexualized comedic relief in Hollywood, lesbians are used for hyper-sexual titillation. Viewers eager for a feminist icon in Charlize Theron’s ball-busting “Atomic Blonde” character Lorraine Broughton should keep their hopes in check, but she does exhibit a refreshingly no-fucks-given fluid sexuality.

Yes, no doubt about it: Charlize Theron as a cool, efficient spy in Atomic Blonde makes James Bond look like a little old lady. This is the female action star we have been waiting for., even if the film is not perfect.
Atomic Blonde is adapted from a graphic novel, “The Coldest City,” directed by David Leitch, who helmed John Wick and is set to direct Deadpool 2. The film retains a kind of graphic novel noir visual style. Neon lights dominate, as does half-lighting and cigarette smoke. The visual style sets the mood well but the real fun of the film is in seeing Theron is the action sequences.

Nobody does the spy thing better than Charlize Theron – and unlike 007, she does it in heels. Director David Leitch, a former stuntman who co-directed John Wick, makes sure his dynamite star stays untamed and is up for anything. Based on the graphic novel series The Coldest City by Antony Johnston, Sam Hart and Steven Perkins, Atomic Blonde is set in 1989, during the thawing of the Cold War and the last days of the Berlin Wall. This allows Leitch to combine brutal, no-holds-barred action with angsty shades of vintage spy-vs-spy espionage...

There’s a bargain underlying the whole of Atomic Blonde, wherein director David Leitch wavers between its more cheeky qualities and its adherence to the conventions of generic spy fare. The film is, by definition, “cool” in every sense. Despite some wonky plotting best described as Diet John le Carré and a heavy-handed soundtrack that occasionally gets in its own way, Charlize Theron plows full steam ahead with a taut precision and a physicality commanding every moment with an icy ferocity. Thankfully, this helps you ignore the moments where Leitch employs a somewhat masturbatory, Nicolas Winding Refn-esque tendency to remind you how fucking “cool” it all is.
Set in Berlin just prior to the collapse of the wall, Theron’s Lorraine Broughton is assigned to track down a much sought-after list of all the double agents deployed by MI6 throughout the Cold War. What worked for Mission: Impossible and...

There’s a fight sequence almost two thirds of the way through Atomic Blonde that I’m convinced is going to go down as an all time classic. It will rock your socks, plain and simple. The whole movie actually is pretty strong when it comes to action sequences. That being said, the real selling point is Charlize Theron, who turns in her most kick ass performance to date. She’s truly spectacular here, showing that what she did in Mad Max: Fury Road (we can pretend things like Aeon Flux never happened) wasn’t a one off. This week, the film hits theaters and should delight those of you who wish more women would get to kick some ass. Trust me, ass is kicked here, to say the least. Discussing the plot of this movie is kind of dumb, since it makes no sense, but here goes nothing. Told in flashbacks,...

This weekend, we here at Cineplex are very excited to see Charlize Theron kicking some serious ass in Atomic Blonde. The action in this looks great, similar to when we first saw Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity.
Theron portrays Lorraine Broughton, a top-level spy for MI6 who is dispatched to Berlin to take down a ruthless espionage ring that has just killed an undercover agent for reasons unknown. She is ordered to cooperate with Berlin station chief David Percival (played by James McAvoy of X-Men and Split), and the two form an uneasy alliance, unleashing their full arsenal of skills in pursuing a threat that jeopardizes the West's entire intelligence operation.

Amid the shiny, polished superhero movies we’re getting every few months in theaters, there seems to be a bit of a resurgence of edgier, more hard-hitting, mid-budget action fare. Between films like John Wick, Lucy, and The Accountant, it seems that audiences are growing hungrier for things that are different from the stuff we’ve been fed over the past several years. That’s nothing against the age of superheroes we’re living in (we Love our comic book movies), but it never hurts to change things up, and when all said and done, it’s nice to see other smaller, more original content find success.

Charlize Theron's upcoming action film Atomic Blonde looks like it's going to be a shit-ton of fun! If you're excited about this movie, we've got a new trailer for you to watch offering great new footage that features the actress brutally destroying people.
Theron went through hell for this role and got so deep into the action that she got bruised, bloodied, and battered. She even lost some teeth in the process! She put everything she had into this role and it looks like the pain she went through is all going to pay off!
Atomic Blonde is based on the Oni Press graphic novel by writer Antony Johnston and illustrator Sam Hart. The film was appropriately directed by John Wick co-director David Leitch and here's the synopsis:

After a hard-hitting first look, Charlize Theron is back to kick some serious ass in the new trailer for Atomic Blonde. The latest feature from John Wick co-director David Leitch, the action-thriller finds Theron’s Lorraine Broughton as an undercover MI6 agent during the Cold War who is tasked with hunting down a secret agent-killer. Teamed up with another agent (James McAvoy), Lorraine must fight her way through hordes of bad guys to save the day.
Penned by Kurt Johnstad (300) and lensed by Jonathan Sela (John Wick), Atomic Blonde looks to showcase Theron’s ferocious energy displayed in Mad Max: Fury Road with the now-signature stylings of John Wick. Following acclaim at its SXSW premiere, see the trailer below, along with a poster and synopsis, for the film that also stars John Goodman, Toby Jones, Sofa Boutella, Bill Skarsgård, and Eddie Marsan.

Charlize Theron is proving to be a real force to be reckoned with in her combat skills, coming off the back of her appearance in Fast and Furious 8 where she plays villainous Cipher who will stop at absolutely nothing in her world domination, comes the second trailer for her John Wickesq outing, Atomic Blonde.
In the first trailer, we witnessed Theron kicking and punching her way through a horde of men before finding out she was, in fact, a secret agent tasked with a mission to stop her fellow agents from being picked off one by one with a less than gentlemanly James McAvoy in tow.
Atomic Blonde, which made its debut at SXSW Film Festival back in March, met with a mixed reaction from critics who described it as ‘technically dazzling’ yet has an ‘empty plot’, is being described as a sleek action with gritty sexuality.

While stuntman-turned-director David Leitch may be best known for his work on John Wick (and he’s also been tapped to helm the upcoming Deadpool 2), throughout his career he’s specialized in delivering all kinds of incredible action sequences for nearly 20 years. So while it may be easy to connect (on paper) the recent hit actioner starring Keanu Reeves and Leitch’s latest, Atomic Blonde, featuring the always badass Charlize Theron destroying bad guys all over Germany in the late 1980s, the latter confidently and brazenly goes all out, raising the bar for action movies and proving once again that blondes really do get to have all the fun.
The setting for Atomic Blonde is 1989. The Berlin Wall is on the verge of being taken down, and tensions are running high on both the west and eastern sides of Germany, as a list of spies has fallen into the wrong hands,...

Despite director David Leitch’s ties to Keanu Reeves, Atomic Blonde is no Lady John Wick. Cold War locales may radiate similar neon hues (Wick’s Russian bath house), but this espionage thrill-kicker is more about consequence then henchman disposal. Revenge is merely an underlying motivation, as government parties fight to keep a power struggle concrete while the Berlin wall crumbles down. Would a Wick/Blonde crossover be powerful enough to level cities? Undeniably. Let’s first appreciate what we have, though – Charlize Theron giving everyone in Atomic Blonde the fucking business.
Berlin, 1989. A German city loaded with secret government operatives, as East/West tensions reach their breaking point. Britain, France, America – everyone has agents in Germany, but a rumored list could out every name if it were to be exposed. This is why MI6 Agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is sent to Germany, with a mission of retrieval. Her...

Among the many wild fight scenes in “Atomic Blonde,” one finds Charlize Theron as MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton rappelling from a balcony using an incapacitated goon as her counterweight, and that’s not even the craziest bit. Later, she battles her way through another apartment building loaded with Kgb goons, in a single, unbroken shot that careens down several flights of stairs, through the close quarters of a decrepit room, and into the confines of a speeding car. Bullets, knives and fists factor heavily into this spectacular showdown, but nothing hits harder than the camera pressing in close to Theron as she glares at one of the vanquished men and growls, “Now you’re my bitch.”
This is not only the essence of “Atomic Blonde,” but a phenomenal show-stopping moment that makes the whole gambit worthwhile. The first solo effort by “John Wick” co-director David Leitch, “Atomic Blonde” exists in...

What happens when you combine spies, visual flair, a badass woman, and a dash of John Wick style action? Well, you end up with the pretty impressive first trailer for Atomic Blonde, though it's definitely on the Nsfw side. Come in to check it out!
Just ahead of its SXSW debut (going down this Sunday for lucky attendees), the first trailer for the action-thriller, Atomic Blonde has arrived. Originally going by the title, The Coldest City (the same name as the graphic novel it's based on), Atomic Blonde sees Charlize Theron play a badass MI6 spy on a dangerous mission. While the trailer may not fill in much in terms of the story, it's packed with plenty of action. Be warned, however, this is a Red Band trailer:
There's a lot to like about this stylish action trailer, which manages to cram in a fairly impressive fight sequence all on its own.

After Mad Max: Fury Road, and others, you might think that Charlize Theron as the main character in an action vehicle was not only a no-brainer, but something to jump to the top of the must-see list. Atomic Blonde is coming to prove things one way or the other, and a new red band trailer hopes to suck you in, but is this trailer the sell it thinks it is?
The film is based on a graphic novel and has Theron starring as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 agent during the Cold War who is sent to investigate the murder of another agent. If the trailer is any sort of true guide, this is a high-octane ride filled with fights, chases, and a decent amount of sex. If the graphic novel is a true guide, it’s a gritty, somewhat crazy investigation that focuses on a character who is somewhat lost within herself.

Charlize Theron seems to be in the Liam Neeson stage of her career. A couple years back, she put out Mad Max: Fury Road, where she played the badass Furiosa, and this year, she’ll have a hand in The Fate of the Furious, and now Atomic Blonde.
Now, we’re not ones for judging prematurely here, but we’ll be damned if this doesn’t look like a great time in the theaters. Not only does this film have the pedigree of Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodman, and Toby Jones behind it, but it was also helmed by John Wick co-director David Leitch, whose next project is the high profile Deadpool 2.

As you'll see, she kicks some major ass, much in the same way that Keanu Reeves kicked ass as John Wick. That's probably because the movie was helmed by John Wick co-director David Leitch.
Theron takes on the role of Agent Lorraine Broughton, and she looks like she's going to be one hell of a strong female action hero. The first minute of this three-minute trailer just shows Theron getting brutally savage on a couple thugs trying to take her down, but she hands their asses to them. In an interview with EW, the actress talked about the intense training she did for the film saying:
"Let’s be honest, I got my ass handed to me every day. I cracked through two of my teeth in the back of my mouth...

With its new, ’80s-esque title (it was originally going by The Coldest City), the actioner follows Theron’s character as a spy on a mission in Berlin. Ahead of the SXSW premiere, the first restricted trailer has now landed for the Kurt Johnstad-scripted film, based on Antony Johnston and Sam Hart‘s graphic novel.
“I hadn’t seen another character like her out there. She doesn’t apologize for anything. We made her strong and feisty. She’s cheeky. These were all things I responded to,” Theron tells EW, also opening up about the training. “Let’s be honest, I got...
